Costume Institute Gala: The event of the season

The Costume Institute Gala is tonight. It really is the event of the year, when you can watch the most glamorous starlets dressed in the most creative of gowns. This year the theme is ‘Model as Muse’ and there have been hundreds of rumours over who is dressing who. This is what we do know: Marc Jacobs and Kate Moss are co-hosting alongside Anna Wintour, Madonna and Victoria Beckham are on Marc Jacobs’ table and that Madonna will be dressed in Louis Vuitton whilst Victoria has opted for Marc Jacobs. We have also heard that Karl Lagerfeld and Matthew Williamson won’t be attending.

So you want to shoot a swimsuit issue of your magazine and you think ‘who should we get for the cover?’ Then it dawns on you, why have one supermodel when you can have six. This is probably the thought processes that went through the minds of editors of V Magazine when developing their latest issue.

Missoni to launch H&M collection?

Just as we had finished sharpening our elbows for the madness that descended on H&M stores today with the first drop of Matthew Williamson for H&M. We are now preparing to start all over again, for the rumoured Missoni/H&M hook up. Talking to The Daily Telegraph, Angela Missoni said: “I would like to do something with H&M because I think it is a very powerful way to reach younger girls now. Well I very much doubt that H&M will need to hear anymore, if I were the CEO of the fashion brand I’d have the launch dates drawn up immediately.

Kate Moss perhaps or Lindsay Lohan? How about SJP? And how long do you think before we all get sick of Balmania? 6 months maybe…..

Johnny Blue Eyes: Bringing democracy to fashion

I’m seated at the entrance of Nandos in Shepherds Bush. This is fashion stylist, Johnny Blue Eyes’ favourite restaurant. It’s also his local. Born and bred in Shepherd’s Bush, Johnny has lived in the area all his life, although he does flit between his home town and New York. As he approaches the door I recognise him instantly. His long thick dark hair is a major giveaway. He’s wearing a hoodie paired with leather trousers, accessorized with a big buckled belt and carrying a large oversized bag. Johnny greets me so warmly that I feel immediately comfortable in his presence. At 41, he describes himself as an artist first and foremost, however his love for dressing up has played a major part in his path down the road of fashion. Johnny is perhaps better known as a stylist, in particular for his work with artists such as Beth Ditto (whom he considers to be a close friend), Ana Matronic from the Scissor Sisters, the Klaxxons and many more famous faces. At the moment, the self-confessed grafter (Johnny wakes up at 7am every morning and hits the sack at 2am) has made a move to the world of design through his label House of Blue Eyes. “The House of Blue Eyes is essentially a movement”, says Johnny passionately. “It’s very inspired by Warhol and the energy of The Factory of New York in the late sixties, early seventies with me as the sort of Warhol-esque character with all these designers and artists and performers and models who are part of that house. The fashion collection is a big room in the house but it is essentially bringing together fashion, art and music…. The House of Blue Eyes is a house of love, and hope and change.” It was the House of […]

We thought Malcolm McLaren’s planned Christian Dior The Musical was a little out there. But it turns out he was just ahead of the designer all singing all dancing game. For it has been announced that Yves Saint Laurent’s life will be set to music. Singer Alain Chamfort and songwriter Pierre-Dominique Burgaud are working on the score and the musical shall focus on Saint Laurent’s rise to fashion fame. The musical will open with his work at Christian Dior and follow the highs and lows of Yves Saint Laurent’s career.

Lily and Britney hit the campaign trail

Wow! We haven’t seen Britney looking this good for a while. It’s probably fair to say that there’s been a little retouching, but still she’s looking back to her old self. And her hot new look? It’s all in aid of fashion brand Candie’s new advertising campaign. The junior brand which is exclusive to Kohl’s has pulled in a number of celebs for previous campaigns. These include Fergie, Hayden Panettiere, Hilary Duff and Jenny McCarthy. So Britney is in good company.

Topshop grand opening: A slice of heaven in NY!

Even amidst the economic downturn the hype around the first New York City Topshop has been enormous , and that’s almost an understatement. Blogs have been tracing every step of the highly-anticipated opening and given that the Soho mega-store was slated to open back in Fall 2008, there have been many. In addition to a number of preview events and parties taking place these last few days, a Topshop Heartschallenger Van has been roaming around the city handing out free goody bags containing Topshop certificates with values reaching as high as $500. It’s little surprise that the van has attracted mobs of people, with Topshop fans closely following its every move via a GPS tracker set-up by the retailer. Given all of this hype , and the fact that Kate Moss’ 9th Topshop collection was going to be launched in tandem with the opening — I made my way down to the Soho location (478 Broadway near Broome Street), at around 9:30am this morning. With the Kate Moss ribbon cutting ceremony not taking place till 11am, I figured that’d give me plenty of time to get my hands on some covetable goods. Little did I know that people had been lining-up since 6am.

First look: Topshop New York

Topshop’s first home stateside is due to open on Thursday 2nd April, and here’s the first look of the new store. It does look fabulous, and as always is visual merchandised to perfection. Sir Philip Green is obviously happy exclaiming: “This is genuinely the best store we have ever built. And we’re inclined to agree. It is over the top loveliness, and has some of the most unusual mannequins ever seen. There is of course going to be a lot of buzz surrounding the grand opening. Fashionistas can expect exclusive parties and dinners, we’re still waiting on our tickets, I’m sure they’ll arrive tomorrow, probably lost in the post.

Feel the LOVE

The moment we’ve all been waiting for: the first issues of LOVE have been released. It’s a very exciting affair. In a mad frenzy the magazines were grabbed, and a fashionista blood bath ensued. A slightly calmer scene (by this I mean before crowds were allowed into the store, after that it was bedlam) was at Dover Street Market on Valentine’s where Katie Grand had a very chic love in. At the love in you could pick up objects of love as created by top fashion designers especially for LOVE. These included Pam Hogg mugs, Stella McCartney underwear as well as t-shirts created by GAP featuring the front cover.

Rosie Huntington-Whitely for Agent Provocateur: A very sexy warning

For anyone who has every forgotten Valentine’s Day and are thinking of making the same mistake this year, you might want to think again. At least for the sake of your face. Yes, Agent Provocateur is at it again with another controversial ad campaign, this time it’s a warning to all men to forget Valentine’s at their peril. A short film entitled Love Me Tender…Or Else sees model of the moment Rosie Huntington-Whiteley being fobbed off by her boyfriend on Valentine’s. Rosie then appears at the boyfriend’s office dressed in a trench, heels and the sexiest lingerie around. She then delivers a lap dance, the finale is however less straightforward, if you don’t want to know the end please look away now: She punches him in the face. The scene ends with Rosie speaking the fateful words: “This will teach you to forget Valentine’s Day. We shouldn’t be surprised, Kate Moss sauntered around in suspenders, Maggie Gyllenhaal stripped, Kylie Minogue rode a bucking broncho and Peaches Geldof took part in some form of virgin sacrifice campaign. Yet, I can’t help but feel slightly shocked by the violence involved in this latest offering. Is it harmless, sexy fun? Or have they gone a step to far? Watch for yourself: Love me tender… or else

Sequin Jumpers. Yes it’s another 80s trend!

Polls: The Hybrid Shoe

Part leg warmer, part gladiator sandal, part flip-flop, these sandals by Cocobelle are a bit of a fashion dilemma. The evolved design is sure to turn some heads ( though not necessarily in a good way). Although the jersey and rubber shoes are probably outrageously comfortable – kind of like walking around in those footy PJ’s we used to wear as kids …we’re not sure that too many people (minus the likes of Kate Moss or the Olsen Twins) could pull them off. Innovation and redefinition is clearly key to fashion and style, but sometimes we wonder if sporting designs like this scream that we’re trying too hard to be different? {democracy:24}

It’s another fashion fairytale; gorgeous girl gets scooped up off the street and suddenly finds herself as part of a two-season runway exclusive with a main designer and the face of his new campaign. In this case the gorgeous girl is Toni Garrn of Hamburg and the main designer is Calvin Klein. Garrn had no modelling aspirations prior to her impromptu scouting encounter; on the contrary, she is currently in school and lives at home with her parents. Yet despite her nonchalance about this new chapter in her life, her casual attitude belies the success she’s already had (in addition to the whole CK runway thing).

Interviews: Celebrity Stylist, Zoe Lem

In the world of fashion, Zoe Lem does it all. Whether it’s styling the stars for the red carpet and participants on the UK version of “What Not to Wear, or flying off to the Middle East to work with the English language version of the Al-Jazeera news network, she’s been there, done that, and with a certain je ne sais quoi. Lem trained as a designer before deciding to focus on styling, and now her work can be seen on A-list celebs, magazine covers, music videos, and a myriad of other places. So, the favourite question to ask stylists and designers: who would you consider to be your biggest influences? That really is a difficult one to give a one word answer, I am very inspired by vintage clothing and the 20’s through to 50’s there was such beautiful style. If it’s who rather than what, then there is no one person. But my mother was really so into clothing growing up, even now her favorite shop is Topshop and she has a very funky style. I was brought up on charity shops, markets and finding great bargains in unusual places, a long while before it was cool to go for second hand chic!

Parties: Lou Doillon by Lee Cooper

So I confess I’m nursing a slight (o.k a massive) hangover as I write this. Jamie Hince (a.k.a Kate Moss’ beau), Johnny Borrell (Razorlight front man) and model Poppy Delevigne were among the party goers that showed up to support Lou – who turned up in an amazing top hat and a pair of high waist jeans from the collection. (Expect another post with more about the collaboration) Overheard? “There’s no one here I can’t believe it. There’s just a whole heap of cool kids as usual.

You shall go to the ball

It was decadence all the way as the crème de la crème of high society stayed up past their bedtime to celebrate Dior’s 60th anniversary. Even the supermodels (minus Kate Moss) came out to play. True to form Galliano gave us opulence and extravagance, not that we expected anything less, especially when the venue was the Royal Chateau of Versailles. The evening began with a Couture show for Autumn/winter 07/08 which Galliano used to pay tribute to the late Christians Dior’s love and appreciation of art. Coat dresses, suits and evening gowns were meticulously constructed to reference some of the world’s most famous painters and miniscule waists highlighted the lashings of fabric employed to create gorgeous full bodied skirts.

Celebrity Labels: Enough is Enough

Actress SARAH JESSICA PARKER has launched a crusade to cover up young America with her new cheap-chic clothing line Bitten. The former Sex + The City star’s new Steve + Barry line of affordable womenswear features only conservative attire – because the actress is tired of seeing young girls baring almost all…….”There’s not going to be any inappropriate midriff showing, regardless of your age. I really don’t care for it. I feel like, as a culture, we have seen enough damage done by it. It’s provocative in a way that I just don’t feel comfortable with.” Erm o.k… this revelation comes after Sarah Jessica Parker enjoyed a high level of success from a show which was far from conservative. I’ve gnerally tried to stay away from the SJP for Steve and Barry’s relationship and try to avoid posting too often about the other celebrity lines which keep cropping up mainly because I have no interest in them. I believe what is actually damaging for us as a culture are all of these damn celebrity collections! Designers for the high street I can somewhat understand, we’re buying into the design which is good enough for me and as much as I sometimes have my reservations about some of the partnerships, I fully accept the argument for them and I’m willing to accept that my qualms are based on unreasonable emotion. But celebrities for the high street and celebrity labels in general, need to be stopped. I’m all for affordable fashion, my wardrobe would be empty without it, but what I find distasteful is the mass hysteria that surrounds the idea that a collection of clothes is only as worthy as the celebrity attached to it. I pity the next generation who soon enough will only associate and make their fashion choices […]
