Vente-Privee: designer brands for smart shoppers!

We can’t believe we hadn’t heard about this sooner. A few months ago, we were introduced to an online shopping site that is relatively new to the UK. For those that haven’t already heard, it’s called Vente-Privee and frankly, it’s blooming marvellous. The online store was set up in France back in 2001 as an exclusive events-based sale site, which features major international brands. It has since grown massively, developing a presence in Spain, Germany, Italy and – in 2008 – the UK. The store isn’t limited to clothes (although designer sales occur regularly), as the site has an array of product categories including electronics, homeware, sports products and even cars! Too put it simply, Vente-Privee is a designer department store with wonderfully slashed prices. We likey. To become a member and hear about the latest sales on the site, all you need to do is register. The best thing about it is that it’s free and you also get email reminders when a sale is about to go live. We’re currently anticipating the Versace watch event which will begin on Friday and have been eyeing up some of the great Temperley pieces that are online now: This leather biker jacket is an absolute steal, at £375 down from a whopping £1,249! Browsing the site is easy and fun. Not only can you preview future sale items but you can also interact with the site in a number of ways, whether it’s via the Vente-Privee blog, your iPhone app or Vente-Privee bubble – a desktop feature – alerting you on upcoming sales and parcel shipment details. We put the Vente-Privee shopping experience to the test and were more than a little impressed. Well, how could you possibly be disappointed when a pair of Michael Kors sunglasses find themselves on your […]

Boden press day AW2010

Think of Boden and you’ll instantly think of a successful brand that has been catering for the UK (and more recently, America and Germany) over the passed 20 years. You might also come up with the words bright, middle-class and – dare we say – motherly. As Tiffanie Darke so put it in The Sunday Times earlier this year: ‘it’s not really fashion, it’s clothes.’ But is this really fair on Boden? Having been to see the AW2010 collections, we’d definitely say no. While the very same article in The Sunday Times revealed that founder Johnnie Boden ‘can’t name a single spring fashion trend’, the store is clearly broadening its appeal in terms of style and content. The launch of Johnnie B – Boden’s teenwear collection, which I was told has been getting a positive reception from women who have outgrown their teen years – showed a more trend-led range, incorporating a distressed leather biker jacket and a nude summer dress with a short hemline – relatively unfamiliar territory for Boden. Heavy knits, tartan shirts and an 80’s-style jersey sweater were also key, acknowledging popular styles whilst adhering to the brand’s comfortable and casual aesthetic. The womenswear collection also offered a few new touches – including, believe it or not, a selection of black clothes. From cute cardigans with pretty detailing to velvet pieces and festival-ready parkas, the darker colours within the collection proved to be some of the most successful items on show, with the star piece being the buttoned leather jacket. Of course, Boden also stuck to what they’re known for, keeping current fans happy with simple brights and separates in a brilliant range of shades, whilst embracing the opportunity to appeal to new customers. To put it simply: Boden, we’re impressed. And we look forward to seeing […]

House of Fraser press day AW2010

For autumn/winter 2010, major department store House of Fraser presented their clothes and accessories in different trend-led categories, mixing the labels to give a clearer vision of the kind of image we can expect from the store next season. The ‘Twilight’ category – whilst appropriately acknowledging the popular teen phenomenon -showed off a gothic approach that will cater for the younger market but also featured some wearable separates that will appeal to many a buyer. Revealing a mainly dark palette, key pieces included a black lace halter-neck dress (reminiscent of Prada, fall 2008) from Pied a Terre and cobweb style pullovers from the store’s new house brand, Label Lab. Throw biker jackets and a particularly lovely bag from Ted Baker and you’ve got a strong, laid-back collection of differing textures to create that romantic, vampy look. As we perused the ‘Wild Things’ rack we noticed a distinct nod to Topshop’s brilliant autumn/winter 2010 catwalk, with heavy neutral knits, faux fur and a gorgeous shearling waterfall coat from Therapy. Fluid lines were broken up with a selection of skinny jeans from Linea Weekend and J Brand. Clothing on the ‘Pantomime’ and ‘Vamp’ rails focussed on polished glamour and party-inspired pieces, achieving a more demure and grown up look. Linea’s navy blue shift and Episode’s vibrant red dress, suggest that velvet will be a continuing trend for next season while exquisite statement jewellery from the likes of Erickson Beamon, Mawi and newcomer Fiona Paxton, prove that bolder is better. The ‘Utility’ section offered perhaps our favourite selection of clothes; most notably a heavy duty trench and a jumpsuit, both from Label Lab. There’s plenty of leather on show too. Not only in the shape of biker jackets and Burberry-style aviator coats but more sophisticated silhouettes. Linea have produced a leather skirt and […]

Whistles AW10 Press Day

Whistles is the go-to shop for those dream day-to-night dresses, they do perfectly cut pieces in stunning prints that have a really contemporary yet sexy feel – basically Whistles rarely gets it wrong. With this in mind we went along to their Autumn Winter 10 press day recently and once again we fell in love with the collection. Filled with wearable pieces from wool tailored trousers to sumptuous outerwear to stand-out evening wear, Whistles AW10 range is set to be making a significant appearance on our wish list for next season. There were a few pieces we fell in love with in particular, including a deep red digitally printed dress with geometric cut-out neck detail and fierce padded shoulders – perfect for cocktails and dinners when worn with killer heels and bold lips. Another standout piece from the collection is a blue wool cropped biker jacket with a shaggy hair collar. And if you’re after a statement jacket then look no further, as this gorgeous piece has a seventies feel to it and is a nod towards the AW trend for luxe feel outerwear. As well as all of the rails of clothes we were lusting after, Whistles’ very quirky sheepskin covered shed took our fancy too. Used to house their accessories collection we thought it would look rather chic as our new wardrobe. Unfortunately the furry shed isn’t going to be a available to buy, but we’re not too disappointed as we’ve got more than enough to look forward to with the coming AW10 collection.

Hobbs AW10 Press Day

‘Tis the season of the press day, and what a wonderful time we’ve been having whilst getting a sneak preview of what all of our favourite stores have in offer for next season. Most recently we went along to the Hobbs AW10 preview which showcased a whole host of wonderful wintery pieces, from luxe wool jackets to peppery tweeds and bright jewel coloured silks. Long gone is the day when Hobbs was confined to the wardrobes of the slightly mumsy crowd who enjoyed wearing linen. Now a savvy feminine brand, Hobbs boasts impeccable tailoring and strong collections alongside its popular mainline. The success of their heritage-feel more quirky NW3 range continues to be the most exciting offering from the label, with its mix of tweedy separates and bold paisley print dresses the collection looks set to offer a quintessentially British feel to dressing for this Autumn Winter. Hot pieces to watch out for in the coming season include a chocolate coloured shearling biker jacket and a fudge coloured mac with a Burberry-esque print. We’re also really looking forward to the arrival of Hobbs’ Limited Collection which features a real statement piece in the form of a winter white full shearling coat, and a slightly more edgy brass studded camel cropped jacket. But while we’d love to snap them up in an instant, priced at £999 it looks like we may just be left to lust after the shaggy shearling coat of dreams. Get planning your pick of the collection now in time for the launch this Autumn in Hobbs stores.

TK Maxx styling challenge

We like to think of ourselves as somewhat style-savvy here at My Fashion Life, so when our friends at TK Maxx asked us to take part in a styling challenge, rise we did. So here’s the deal: TK Maxx give us one dress from their spring collection which we then style in three different ways for three very different scenarios. Easy, non? Well, we’ll let you be the judge of that. The dress in question is this cute floral tea dress, £16.99 (pictured) – admittedly not the easiest dress to style, with its fussy neckline and hip sash detail, but it’s pretty nonetheless (though truth be told, we prefer some of the dresses dealt out to the other bloggers involved). And actually, that’s what makes this challenge a little tricky, because you guys have to vote for your favourite look. But anyway, that’s quite enough of an introduction for one day, so let’s get to the nitty gritty: behold below our final looks. Look one – meeting the boyfriend’s parents: Accessories: cropped denim jacket – Topshop, £40; Miu Miu nude canvas tote – Net-a-Porter, £750; black wedge clogs – Topshop, £50; Mac Tinted Lipgloss in Ember Glow – Mac, £12. On a day which injects fear into the toughest girls’ hearts, being comfortable is key to surviving ’til tea-time; scrap those five-inch heels, save on sparkles and sequins, and scrape off the excess makeup – we’re going for grown-up cute, here. Keep things simple and up-to-date with a cropped denim jacket and a nude canvas bag: both say relaxed without being scruffy. To inject a real style statement, opt for these black suede clog wedges – not only are they bang on trend, they’re practical, too, and add a little edge to offset the sweetness. A slick of tinted gloss […]

London Fashion Week SS10: Jasmine Di Milo

When Mohamed Al Fayed walked swiftly passed me to go and see his daughter’s presentation in the Portico Rooms of Somerset house, I desperately wanted to join him. Not because I didn’t have a ticket, but because I had already waited over 45 minutes in a tiny, overheated corridor to get there and the queue was not moving anywhere in a hurry.

It’s no men at Christopher Kane

Christopher Kane won’t let men in his studio. The Scottish designer, who runs his label with sister Tammy, prefers working with women as he thinks they have more creative energy. He explained: “I’m just a girl’s boy – I think they have so much more to say and so much to give. My whole studio is full of girls, I don’t really like boys in there – they just mess up the dynamic and want to be the boss.”

The Men of Glastonbury 2009

Since Kate Moss donned her little hot-pants outfit to the UK’s favourite music event – Glastonbury – a few years ago, festival goers have treated the occasion like a bizarre, mud-filled catwalk – parading their finest (and often loudest) wardrobes to the masses. The best (or maybe worst) thing about this? There are no rules. But let’s not limit this to the girls. And having said that, to the festival crowd themselves. Performers after all, are under the scrutiny of the fields of fashionistas, fans and cameras, and the men are no exception. Here’s a few that we’ve picked out: Pete Doherty – Dressed in his faithful trilby hat, Pete chose a military/old band style top in a black and gold jersey material for his performance on The Other Stage. Thumbs up to Pete for the casual take on this formal theme. Although we’re not so sure about the navy blue polo shirt underneath, luckily Pete can pull off just about anything without it looking out of the ordinary.

Matthew Williamson for H&M Special: Pictures & Video!

Prepare the tents, pack the cuppa soup, pull out the thermals, it’s almost time to start queuing girls! Exciting! How very, very exciting. This collaboration is for us the most exciting yet, combining both the beauty of Williamson’s designs with wearability and fabulous summer shades. Perfection! There is going to be two drops, one on 23rd April which will go to 200 stores worldwide and another on 14th May that can be found in 1,700 stores. But here’s the tricky bit, we want it all. We’re not joking. We want it all and if we were to settle we’d opt for the peacock dress, the maxi dress, the jumpsuit oh and then maybe the shorts, so it’d be rude not to have a top.

Milan Fashion Week: Versace AW09

Versace brought full throttle colour to Milan Fashion Week. If you were fearing AW09 was going to be all black and grey then Versace is the designer for you. There was of course black and shades of silver, but hot pink, post box red and aqua blues made up a glorious palette. You can always rely on Donatella Versace to create ultra sexy, super skimpy gowns and this was no exception. This was a well-rounded show, with everything from cigarette trousers, belted coats; thigh high split dresses to chic shifts. Again, this Amazon theme was seen, a toughened femininity shown best by dramatic stitching, leather biker jackets and tightly belted waists. The fish scale dresses and full-length gowns were breathtaking. The other outfits were fairly simple, but I’m sure they won’t disappoint Versace fans. Versace is one of those designers you adore or loathe; you either become flustered at the sight of one of Donatella’s slinky creations or cower in fear. But all can admit she does the Versace style proud, and this screams sex, scandal and most importantly ‘look at me’. Now, if that isn’t a credit crunch remedy I don’t know what is.

London Fashion Week: Twenty8Twelve AW09

Twenty8Twelve was always going to be a wearable collection. Anyone who hoped otherwise must be sorely disappointed. But those who knew what to expect should be happy indeed. For their debut at London Fashion Week, Sienna and Savannah Miller delivered a collection of skinny jeans, tiny leather biker jackets, loose jersey tops, cropped trousers, tailored coats and a very sexy sparkly mini-dress as modelled by Jourdan Dunn. Boring? Perhaps. Actually yes. The truth is while many fashionista’s including myself could snap up many of the basics from the collection, this could easily have been an offering from Topshop.

Last night, William Rast not only brought in the celebrities (naturally Jessica Biel was there to support her man, she is stunning!) but also pulled in fashions heavyweights , Anna Wintour (she is tiny!) and Carine Roitfeld (she is amazing!). It was obvious not just from Wintour and Roitfeld’s presence but also from the collection that Justin Timberlake, his partner Trace Ayala and fellow creative directors Marcella and Johan Lindeberg are pushing for credibility in the fashion industry.

Oh, and I must add that Dita really is flawless. So, on with the clothes and the curiously long catwalk (the models must have been exhausted). Edgier looks came in the form of patent leather biker jackets paired with body con dresses. Jewel brooches embellished various pieces and added a lovely final touch to some of the fitted jackets.

NY Fashion Week AW08: Iódice

I’m not going to lie—over an hour of waiting in line in four-inch heels after a ten hour day at work makes me cranky. So cranky, in fact, that I will contemplate getting out of line, especially when it looks as though, a) I won’t get into the show and b) If I do get in, it may never start as it’s already nearing the hour delay mark. Luckily for me (and my feet!) I was one of the last people let in and I muscled my way into a seat. As the lights dimmed and sultry Brazilian music pumped out over the sound system, my bad mood disappeared. Iódice was absolutely delightful.

Interviews: Caroline Issa – Owner of Tank Magazine

Caroline Issa – owner of Tank Magazine – is known for her impeccable sense of style but fashion aside Caroline is also an astute entrepreneur. Being at the helm of such an innovative and influential publication means she’s always on the go and in the know. Here, Caroline takes some time out of her busy schedule to talk fashion, music, travel and more… Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself, your background and how you came to own Tank Magazine? I actually studied business in Philadelphia as an undergraduate and moved to San Francisco after that as a strategic management consultant, working with fashion retailers and consumer brand companies on their business strategy. Working in the US and in Asia, I was then moved to work in London with a UK-based retailer before meeting my now-business partner, Masoud Golsorkhi who had started Tank magazine four years earlier. I found him to be an inspiring partner and thought, I’m young, when else can I become an entrepreneur with such an amazing opportunity and product. Five years later, I’m still here! Any thoughts on increasing Tank’s online presence and launching a blog? We have been debating in the office what we want Tank’s online presence to be. We currently have our own project, www.tank.tv which we started five years ago showing moving images online and has had shows at the Tate Modern and the ICA. Regarding our magazine’s online presence, we are aiming to launch something unique, which doesn’t just translate what the paper version is but adds a layer for the readers. Watch this space. Your job requires that you’re constantly on the go, travelling. But which destination is your favourite spot to just getaway? I love Singapore for the food, Beijing for the sights and Montreal for […]

Twenty8Twelve

So it’s not exactly breaking news that Sienna Miller along with her sister Savannah have launched a label called “Twenty8Twelve”. After celebrating with a party in New York, the sisters brought the festivities to London with a private party to mark the opening of their new boutique in Notting Hill. Pictures from the collection surfaced a while ago and after numerous peeks I can’t seem to form any concrete opinion about the line. Do I love it, hate it or feel indifferent? I really don’t know. Pieces that have been worn by the Miller sisters at parties or in editorial pics, look fab. But standard images like these, just fail to impress.

Have you got that fashion feeling?

Texture is what it’s all about for autumn and with the new season will come an array of new ‘it’ materials and fabrics. Leather is definitely going to be central for this season, with designers like Prada and Moschino, creating beautiful, feminine designs. Just avoid the leather bomber, and opt for a biker jacket or a fitted coat, or if you’re brave, a tight dress. In addition to leather challenging its habitual image, Patent has resurfaced and has established itself as the must have look for accessories this autumn while this wet look blouse, £32, from Topshop proves that it is indeed chic to shine!

How To Choose The Right Outfit For A Casual Event

Finding the right outfit to wear to a casual event can be a major challenge, especially if you don’t want to spend a fortune on finding something you might not even wear again. This is why it could be a great idea to come up with an attire that you can wear to any event while being casual enough to wear on a normal day out in the park or to the mall. Below we suggest some simple tips on how to choose the right outfit for a casual event. T-Shirts In addition to never going out of style, t-shirts are the perfect clothing piece that anyone, regardless of age and size, can wear at any event. The ideal t-shirt makes people look and feel relaxed, but also elegant. For the sizzling summer days, you can pair the t-shirt in endless ways, especially if it’s an eye-catching graphic tee. Tees come in many styles and designs, all of which can speak volumes about your personality and interests. For instance, if you’re into gothic clothing and want to find an edgy graphic tee, look for one that has gothic elements and pair it with your favorite pair of jeans and complete the look with a white pair of sneakers and a small over-the-shoulder bag for a comfortable yet stylish look. You can also add some bold accessories like a big buckle belt or a trendy ring. Attention-Grabbing Socks When you think of accessories that might give your outfit a lift, rarely does anyone think of a pair of socks. Usually, our drawers are full of plain white or black socks that we wear for just about any event. So why not leave the plain socks at home and instead experiment with colors and patterns. It’s easy to stick to the safe […]

Top 5 Ways to Wear a Chanel Bag According to Celebrities

Chanel handbags are classic, stylish accessories that will never go out of style. Every girl wants to own one of these investment pieces, and the Chanel Classic Flap Bag is well-known in its own right. The key concern is how we will style them. A Chanel bag is more than an accessory; it’s a true designer piece that only requires a blank canvas to shine.  Are you planning a night out with your girls? A denim mini skirt with a white blouse will brighten up your legs; Put on some lovely shoes and hold your Chanel bag. A refined, uncomplicated look that is easy to imitate. It’s simple to put together winter outfits with Chanel purses. Most of their purses have fairly long chain straps. As a result, you can wear them over jackets and puffy winter coats with ease. Leather leggings and sweaters work great with this bag. The jacket’s biker design and shearling detailing are the perfect complements to the bag. Because Chanel bags are so popular and in such high demand, counterfeiters take advantage of the opportunity to create and sell more online, frequently without alerting their customers that they are buying knockoffs. Two Stylish Ways To Wrap Up Warm

While sometimes we’d like nothing more than to throw on a couple of thermal vests, an oversized jumper, the warmest pair of trousers we can find and a long puffer jacket, the truth of the matter is that the colder months last for so much longer than the warmer months, so we’ve got to have a winter wardrobe that is as stylish as it is warm. The good news? This isn’t as tricky as one may think. Here’s two looks we’re loving which aren’t too difficult to recreate. Outfit 1 Airport chic at it’s finest and the perfect weekend outfit, pair an asymmetric white jumper with your black skinnies for a look that’s not only effortlessly cool but guaranteed to fight the wintry chills. 1. Pullover sweater / 2. Zara motorcycle jacket / 3. Current/Elliott skinny jeans/ 4. Very Volatile black booties / 5. Yves Saint Laurent shoulder bag / 6. Tom Ford oversized sunglasses/ 7. Nars Supervixen Lipgloss Outfit 2 You know that metallic skirt you snapped up during party season? Well don’t leave it lying in your wardrobe, waiting for your next evening engagement. Instead, team with a classic sweater and ankle boots for a great AM to PM option. 1. Uniqlo sweater / 2. Gucci metallic skirt / 3. Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium/ 4. Nly Shoes high heel booties / 5. Nixon rose gold watch / 6. Nars Baby Doll Lipgloss

Fausto Puglisi two-tone dress: Yay or Nay?

It’s fabulous because… No one does glamour better than the Italians, (hello, Milan Fashion Week!), and this week’s designer hails from the midst of it all. Synonymous with sexy designs that scream personality, Fausto Puglisi’s creations have found red carpet fashion fans in everyone from Coco Rocha to Lily Collins and Rashida Jones. Given the affection for pastels on the spring/summer ’14 runways was pretty unmissable, we’re diggin’ this two-tone, silhouette-skimming jersey dress for more reasons than one! Cut from the softest jersey, the soft lilac and mint palette and knee-grazing length make this an ideal dress for various occasions. Why were totally saying yay: Perfect for work or play: Wear it to work paired with a well-cut jacket and pumps, and swap for a leather biker and heels for after-work fun. Easy. Great price: Sitting pretty at £282, the price isn’t the heftiest of fees to pay for slither of Italian glam, right? Easy piece for various occasions: Be it date night, a summer wedding guest option or, even a holiday look; this dress promises to be a fit for all. And, erm, maybe nay Unforgiving silhouette: The downside to slipping into a dangerously-clingy dress is its unforgiving nature! Washboard abs and a miniscule waist aren’t everyone’s forte (and shouldn’t be, either), so consider this before investing. Difficult colour to style: A two-tone option can always throw us a little, so the best styling option sees like all black. Boring. Unless you are Anna Dello Russo, of course. One-hit wonder: Given its trend-centric colour palette, you could find yourself pushing this dress to the back of the wardrobe once the summer months pass. Fausto Puglisi two-tone jersey dress, £282, available at LuisaViaRoma.

London Fashion Week Day 4 highlights continued: Fashion Scout shows

Fashion Scout shows are always an exciting reminder in our Fashion Week diaries. Continuing the fashionable activities on day four of London Fashion Week, we teetered in heels down to Freemason’s Hall in Great Queen Street to check out talent from the East making waves in the West. Eugene Lin Singapore-born, Central Saint Martins alumnus, Eugene Lin, sent out the very urban Trojan princess he had envisaged when designing the autumn/winter 2013-14 ‘Cupide de Locke’ collection. Interpreting the contrasts between ‘involuntary violence and fragility of love’ (the show rather aptly opened to a modern reworking of Nancy Sinatra’s Bang Bang), Lin chose a black and sand palette to update the armour-esque trench coat with embellished capes, as models sported warrior chic-inspired plaits on the crowns of their heads. Shattered mirror prints on dresses depicted the power of Cupid’s arrow, whilst the toughness of high neck collars and cuffs and strong, focal eye makeup reminded us of a woman not to be crossed. Heowhan Simulation Breathtaking was the only way to describe this technical genius’s work. Having previously won the Vauxhall Fashion Scout Merit Award, Korean-born Hwan Heo is two seasons into a ten-year season vision, The Decade Project, to create experimental artwork fashion that lends itself to stories of social and political unrest. For autumn/winter 2013-14, Heo looked to France during the protests of 1968; when political rebellion was high on the nation’s agenda. Riotous prints interspersed with patch detail inserts on oversize jackets and worn over long-line, contrasting jackets; loose silk blouses, multi zip-detail bikers and knuckle-slimming sleeves made this yet another desirably wearable collection. Ji Cheng Waiting for the Ji Cheng show to start, there was a certain excitement in the atmosphere that could be tasted. Reading the show notes whilst sipping on Vitamin water (which was  very […]

10 of the best trends of 2012

We can’t believe 2012 is drawing to a close so fast, and with festive prep in full blast, we’ve taken out a little time to help you reflect on the trends that defined the runways of 2012. From ornate embellishment to luxe leather; gym gear gone glam to shirtless collars – 2012 brought several lasting pieces and styles to our wardrobes. To refresh your memory, as next season creeps upon the ever-moving world of fashion, here’s to a trip down trend memory lane to refresh your fashion mindset, and cleanse the mental palate to make way for next season’s stunning wares. Sports luxe: Olympic fever gripped the globe this year, and with so much fitness apparel, fine abs and Tom Daley in full view, designers couldn’t help but take gym gear up a few chic notches; off the treadmill and straight onto the runway(with a few modifications, obvs). Embellishment: The SS’12 shows marked the beginning of our obsession with festooning everything from cardis to clutches and slippers to socks. Even for a/w’12, Lanvin and Balmain delivered heavy smatterings of crystals and beading to their fashionable wares, whilst Christopher Kane’s embellished clutches and jeans became summer staples. We approved. Collars: Dismantling the shirt, a firm wardrobe staple, left us with a collar and free reign to do anything to it! What started out as a pretty and prim game of peek-a-boo atop cosy knits Alexa (yes, she) wore with dresses and shirts underneath became a full-blown global phenomenon. Encrusted with stones; crisp white; metallic; printed or Peter Pan versions, the collar did pretty well at pushing the statement necklace of its pedestal. Candy shades: Probably the biggest summer trend to slip into our wardrobes, pastel shades were everywhere! We blame the house of Louis Vuitton for getting us unhealthily hooked on shades of […]
