Love or Hate: Dries Van Noten marabou shrug

I’m all for using a bit of fur to instantly glamorise a look. For me, fur connotes luxury, opulence and grandeur. A perfect example of someone who wears fur well is Kate Moss. When she rocked up at the Isle of Wight festival last year in a vintage fur shawl, she was the girl everybody there wanted to be. Her black and grey number looked super-glam, and even teamed with denim shorts and boots, it made her turn heads. With this in mind, I cannot get my head around Dries Van Noten’s blue shrug. Made from marabou feathers and silk, this shrug is certainly luxurious, but it’s just too fluffy and too… blue. I’m not entirely sure where you would wear it, either. It would be a bit much for daytime and odd against jeans. Even worse, it has the potential to distract from a great dress in the evening. Sorry Dries Van Noten, this is less Kate Moss and more Cookie Monster if you ask me. Dries Van Noten Marabou Shrug, £515, available at Browns. BUY NOW!

Love or Hate: Project D v-neck tulle dress

I have nothing against the whole celebrity designer circuit. Victoria Beckham’s collections get better every season. The Olsen’s Elizabeth and James label is a real breath of fresh air. Even Kate Moss’s collection for Topshop was groundbreaking in its own right. So when a new celeb designer comes along we should surely give them the benefit of the doubt and view their work with an open mind. Step forward Dannii Minogue’s Project D collection. On the whole, her designs with business partner Tabitha Somerset Webb are quite good, apart from this V-neck tulle dress. Dannii, I can forgive the dodgy early singing career, I can forgive the stint on Home and Away, but I cannot forgive this dress. I would feel like a tulle nightmare walking around in this – the metallic gold flowers, shiny cord and black beads just make it too fussy for my liking. In general, I am pro-bows but this one is just too prissy and the high-collar reminds me of Princess Anne on a royal visit. Sorry Dannii, love you on X Factor and you rock those M&S ads, but you would never get me in this dress. Project D v-neck tulle dress, £365, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

Paris Fashion Week AW11 round-up

As Paris Fashion Week brought the month-long round of AW11 collections to an end, we’ve scoured through the shows to bring you a quick-fire round-up of our favourites from the City of Light. Take a look at our highlights from the sartorial proceedings in Paris below… Who: Alexander McQueen What: The collection, at times, maintained a softer silhouette than we’re used to from the house of McQueen, but once again Sarah Burton proved she knows what she’s doing with the label. With white tweed skirts, fur accents, opened pleats, grey separates, intricate suits, knitted fur detailing, raw chiffon frills, spray-on leather leggings, robotic bustiers, platform shoes and moulded silhouettes galore – this was yet another truly astounding collection, with McQueen’s signature style printed all over it. And the finale of wedding-esque dresses did nothing to dispel the Kate Middleton rumours. Who: Chanel What: Lagerfeld definitely celebrated International Women’s Day with his autumn/winter collection at Paris Fashion Week, and with raw silhouetted clothing making a profound impact on the catwalk, there was no denying the rough, tough and ready mood of the clothes: an abundance of boiler suits, cropped jackets, pleated trousers, tweed legwarmers, flat brogues and mannish ankle boots. Who: Louis Vuitton What: A quintessential collection of hotel uniform-inspired clothes, with patent leather jackets, sheer skirts exposing suspenders and bottom-revealing cashmere onesies completing the array of rule-breaking get-ups. Surprise appearances from Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss smoking stole the show. Who: Lanvin What: A collection of sophisticated silhouettes, with mustard and caramel draped fabric dresses aplenty. Who: Valentino What: A romantic collection of lace and cashmere, delicate jumpers and A-line dresses. Who: Miu Miu What: A statement collection of signature Sixites shapes, bold colour blocking and sparkly heels galore. Who: Givenchy What: A collection inspired by the Japanese kimono silhouette […]

Nicole Scherzinger tries a turban

Wearing a turban is only for the brave. Even Kate Moss at the Met Gala a couple of years back only just about managed to pull it off – but somehow Nicole Scherzinger did it too. The Pussycat Dolls singer was spotted in London yesterday promoting her new solo album, and as she left the Paramount restaurant, Nicole made the most of the sunny weather by wearing a printed mini – but it was her clever mix of of high fashion pieces with plain basics that really caught our eye. The black top and matching platform heels balanced out the structured skirt and gold turban perfectly. It might not be typical Monday attire, but when you’re a pop star, the rules are different. What do you think of Nicole’s outfit? Daring or daft? [poll id=”51″]

John Galliano releases apology (and heads to rehab)

We haven’t heard a peep from him since last Thursday’s events that saw John Galliano arrested and subsequently sacked from Dior, but at last, the designer has released a statement apologising for his behaviour. In full, it reads: “Since the events of last Thursday evening I have not been able to make any public comment on what took place based upon advice from my French lawyer. However, given the continuing delays at the French Prosecutor’s Office I should make my position clear. “I completely deny the claims made against me and have fully co-operated with the police investigation. “A number of independent witnesses have given evidence and have told the police that I was subjected to verbal harassment and an unprovoked assault when an individual tried to hit me with a chair having taken violent exception to my look and my clothing. For these reasons I have commenced proceedings for defamation and the threats made against me. “However, I fully accept that the accusations made against me have greatly shocked and upset people. “I must take responsibility for the circumstances in which I found myself and for allowing myself to be seen to be behaving in the worst possible light. “I only have myself to blame and I know that I must face up to my own failures and that I must work hard to gain people’s understanding and compassion. To start this process I am seeking help and all I can hope for in time is to address the personal failure which led to these circumstances and try and earn people’s forgiveness. “I have fought my entire life against prejudice, intolerance and discrimination, having been subjected to it myself. In all my work my inspiration has been to unite people of every race, creed, religion and sexuality by celebrating […]

John Galliano has (apparently) been arrested!

Just when you thought the fashion world couldn’t get any more surprising, news flies around that Christian Dior creative director, John Galliano, has been arrested in Paris for alleged assault – yes, seriously. According to reports on international news agency ATP, via the BBC this morning, the designer was allegedly arrested in a bar after making anti-Semitic remarks and for assault on a couple. Elle UK reports that no definite details of his arrest have been confirmed as of yet, but rumours are most certainly spreading like wild fire across the board. Frankly, we don’t know when he’d have time for all this, but with his up coming Christian Dior AW11 show at Paris Fashion Week imminent, and Kate Moss’s wedding dress) to think about, we think this is one set back Galliano could have done without. We’ll update you on the matter as soon as more news arrives…

In memory of McQueen: one year on

It’s hard to believe today marks a year since Alexander McQueen’s tragic death. Fashion’s been mourning the loss of the late, great designer ever since he passed away on February 11th 2010 – and even though Sarah Burton’s continuing Lee’s legacy through his eponymous label, there’s still a gaping hole left in the industry. A genius of our generation, McQueen’s avant garde and often daring designs pushed boundaries, challenged traditions and transcended fashion into a spectacular art form. From his debut Central Saint Martins postgraduate collection in 1992 to his final collection, shown at a private presentation in Paris without him in 2010, the British enfant terrible, as he was often referred, expanded our understanding of fashion towards a conceptual commentary on contemporary culture. And so, on the first anniversary of his death – and as the fashion world commemorates the official Alexander McQueen day on Twitter – we’re paying tribute to the incredible designer, celebrating his unrivalled work, and spotlighting the celebs who’ve worn it. Sarah Jessica Parker Sarah Jessica Parker in a tartan McQueen dress at 2006’s Costume Institute Gala; wearing a McQueen tuxedo jacket to the designer’s memorial at St Paul’s Cathedral in September 2010; and wearing a floor-length floral gown two months before to the 2010 CFDA Awards. Daphne Guinness Muse to McQueen Daphne Guinness wears sea-inspired dress and those infamous 12-inch Armadillo shoes from Alexander’s SS10 collection to Nars’ 15×15 project in November 2009. Naomi Campbell Naomi Campbell models a McQueen dress from his SS10 collection at her charity Fashion For Relief catwalk show in February 2010; just days later, she wears another dress from the same collection to the 2010 Elle Style Awards; and in December last year, wearing a McQueen dress by Sarah Burton to the British Fashion Awards 2010. Alexa Chung at Etam’s fashion show

Etam attracted quite the star-studded crowd at its latest lingerie launch in Paris’s Grand Palais yesterday – Kate Moss came (on the arm of YSL’s Stefano Pilati, no less) to watch boyfriend Jamie Hince perform with the Kills, Beth Ditto sang, as did Boy George and models Natalia Vodianova and Eva Herzigova sat front row – but one caught our discerning eye more than most: Alexa Chung. Swapping thigh-skimming hems for calf-swinging ones, Alexa wore a navy polka dot mid-length dress – fashion’s favourite finish thanks to its Seventies obsession – with a large rust-orange and white flower print and matching pannelled trim. And, becasue no one works a vintage-inspired look quite like Ms. Chung, she teamed her Seventies throw-back dress with a matching skinny belt with chunky black YSL platforms for a cool, contemporary twist. Is that a new darker ‘do we spy as well?

Lee Alexander McQueen Following the designers death in February, the fashion world came together to mourn the loss of one of the world’s greatest design talents with a special memorial service at September’s London Fashion Week. His last collection was unveiled without him at a private show just one month after his death – shortly after, Sarah Burton was named as his successor, and unveiled her first solo collection at Paris Fashion Week. Celebrating his life and work, McQueen was last month honoured posthumously with the Outstanding Achievement Award at 2010’s British Fashion Awards. Why’s fashion gone all plus-size?

The old weight debate has been around for as long as we can remember, but when did fashion become so thin? Has everyone forgotten the likes of Marilyn Monroe? No, they haven’t, but when Calvin Klein and Kate Moss created the waif-like models of the 90s, they also developed a pattern for the future shape of fashion. Now, however, it seems the industry may be ready for a re-jig, a curve toward something bigger – more so than ever, plus-size is in the spotlight. Cast your minds back to the past few months in fashion: we’ve had Karl Lagerfeld, the very man who said all women want to be skinny, shoot an all-plus-size spread; Mark Fast has sent plus-size models down the runway; Crystal Renn has landed her first ever Chanel campaign; hell, even Marc Jacobs has declared plans for a plus-size line – and to top it off, yesterday, New York Fashion Week played host to the world’s first ever plus-size-only fashion show. So what’s the deal? Is it just a way of democratising shoppers in a difficult economic climate? Well, yes, in a nutshell. If the average UK dress size is a 16, and the US a 14, that’s your mass market right there. Sure, 15-year-old girls look great down the runway, but put them in the middle of a street and they look frail at best – they don’t represent your average woman. Then again, since when has fashion been about normal? In an industry that strives on creativity, fantasy and idealism, isn’t democratising fashion to appeal to the wider (no pun intended) audience waving goodbye to its escapist appeal? Well, perhaps, but who’s to say that plus-size fashion can’t be fantastical, too? If fashion plays such an important part in most women’s and men’s lives – […]

A week in Rupert Sanderson: the Tawny vs the Nuance

Rupert Sanderson‘s a name that will send shivers down every fashion-loving girl’s spine – for all the right reasons, of course. Those classic shoes each tweaked with an individual style to transform his talent for traditional craftsmanship into a unique vision have caught the discerning eyes of many a modern day style icon – from Kate Moss to Cheryl Cole, no less – making him a firm favourite on fashion’s footwear radar. Yep, that’s Rupert Sanderson alright, and what most girls would give to spend a day in his delicately-designed shoes. Oh, wait a minute… Yes, yes, yes! Thanks to the powers that be, we’ve got our hands – or should that be feet – on 10 key styles from Rupert Sanderson’s AW10 collection to try on for size. And so, each day for the next week we’ll be putting two styles through their platformed paces to see which pair gets our vote and comes up trumps. So, without further ado, let’s introduce our first footwear face-off: the Tawny vs the Nuance. Firstly, let me apologise now for the amount of squashed toes, undone zips, over-hanging heels and, in some cases, the complete lack of trying on that you may see during the course of this next week. Blame a thing called sample sizes; try as I might, some size fours just won’t hold my size fives. Thankfully both the Tawny and the Nuance do, though we’ll brush over the part where the zips don’t do up. Here’s two ankle boots, both containing a concealed platform with a sky-high stiletto heel and both similar in style and shape, but there’s one very clear difference – one’s black and white houndstooth made from pony skin; the other’s grey suede. So how do they compare? The Tawny Now a houndstooth shoe isn’t […]

Fashion photographer Corinne Day has died

Famed fashion photographer Corinne Day, who helped kick-start the career of a 16-year-old Kate Moss, has died following a ten-year battle with brain cancer. She passed away on Friday, 27th August, aged 45, from the tumour that had been building in her brain for the best part of ten years. Having shot for the likes of Vogue, including international editions, and exhibited at galleries around the world, Corinne is best known for bringing a raw beauty to her portraits and is responsible for the now legendary spread in FACE magazine in 1990 that starred a 16-year-old supermodel in the making – it’s often said she helped kick-start Kate Moss‘s supermodel status. Much of her work, including her most iconic pieces, were auctioned off last year by friends of the photographer in an attempt to raise money for her life-saving treatment and, according to Elle UK, the V&A museum was planning a retrospective of her work later this year. Our thoughts go out to her friends and family at this sad time – she’ll be missed in the fashion world and beyond.

Lily Cole launches Model Search

Do you fancy yourself as the next Adam Senn or Jamie Dornan? Then get yourself down to London’s Gatwick airport – no not for a much-needed holiday – but for Storm modeling agency’s search for a new face. Fronted by supermodel of the moment Lily Cole, Storm agency and Gatwick airport today launched their search for a new male and female model, and they’re very much hoping re-create the success of Kate Moss after she was spotted at JFK airport in the ‘80s. Not only will the gorgeous winners receive a formidable new faces contract with Storm but they’ll also be taking to the catwalk in Gatwick Fashion week from 5th-8th August to model all of the hottest high street looks. Sarah Doukas, the Storm agent who spotted Kate Moss when she was just 14, said ‘This is a very exciting opportunity for Storm. We are very devoted to the discovery and nurturing of new talent and the opportunity to launch a model competition with London Gatwick Airport is exciting. We are hoping to find the New Faces of the future, who will go on to enjoy a long and successful career with Storm.’ If you’re not planning on jet-setting it through Gatwick Airport anytime soon, but you still want to enter the competition, then do not fear, you can upload your shots to the website where you’ll be judged by Storm’s top scouts as well as the very discerning public. So if you think you’ve got what it takes, then strike your best pose and – whether you’re planning to fly or not – hot-foot it down to Gatwick airport for the modeling chance of a lifetime.
