Fashion, Photoshop and the Age of Social Media Content

In fashion, the outfit should always be able to speak for itself. However, we also need to be realistic. This is the 21st century and tweaking a photo or two isn’t uncommon. In fact, it’s almost become the standard MO of many photographers and social media influencers. For those in the industry, there’s a distinct difference between professional photoshoots and smartphone snaps taken for Instagram. However, there’s no denying that the latter has become a quick and easy way for certain fashion companies to get their brand noticed by the social media generation. According to statistics from Rawhide, 74% of all Snapchat pictures are selfies. Additionally, more than 1,000 selfies are uploaded to Instagram every second, many of which are taken by so-called influencers. What the data suggests is that fashion photography now exists in two different spheres. We’re not in a position to say that one is better than the other. What we are saying, though, is that social media content has changed the game. Brands have handed over a certain amount of creative control to individuals who, by and large, aren’t trained photographers. What they are skilled at is editing their images. Editing Is Part of the Business Touching up the background, removing blemishes and pinching in the waistline are all things that professional and amateur fashion photographers will do. In previous years, only those in the fashion industry would use Photoshop to give an outfit the best canvas possible. Today, every aspiring Instagram model needs to know the basics. This has led to a surge in online Photoshop tutorials. Where there is demand, something will always emerge to fill the void. SuperProf is one such company. From its database of tutors in all subjects, users can now get Photoshop lessons from £15 per hour. Such is the […]

What Will Be the Biggest Everyday Fashion Trends of 2021?

The beginning of the year is the peak time for trend-setting. It’s always top of our list to see what is becoming popular early on, and what will carry on throughout the year. As we look to the new year for new inspiration and fresh ideas, here are a few predictions for the biggest trends of 2021. Minimal-makeup, skin-focused beauty The opportunity and reasons for wearing makeup were significantly reduced in 2020, with most of us spending time at home with family or alone, and this led to more people taking an ‘au natural’ approach to their faces. Although makeup experimentation has never been more interesting or artful, for day-to-day wear and trending looks, a less-is-more approach works for our bank accounts, the environment, and our pores. Brands like Glossier, IT Cosmetics, and Jecca Blac all take a ‘your features but improved’ approach to their products, which is appealing for many, regardless of age, gender, or skin type. Headwear: Baseball caps We may consider these the domain of teenage boys’ wardrobes in the 90s or dads at family barbecues, but baseball caps look set to make a comeback in 2021. Notably, in the Hedi Slimane (CELINE) Summer 2021 show, in which Slimane wanted to show ‘youth and optimism’, every single look featured the retro accessory. Loungewear and sports clothing became more popular than ever in 2020, and that energy is matched by the fun caps that we have seen sported by supermodels like Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber recently. Time to dust off your dad’s old Mets cap? More casual wear in Haute Couture In the same vein as baseball caps, the popularity of sweatpants, tracksuits, and snuggly shirts made their way into women’s luxury fashion last year; and it looks set to continue. Brands like Valentino, Gucci, and Dior […]

Spring 2021 Hairstyle Trends Not To Miss Out On

Winter isn’t over yet, but we’re already looking forward to spring trends. Why? Because they’re fabulous, of course! Right now, we may be lcoked down, but there’s no harm in wanting to prepare for the warmer season. Order clothes online and try new makeup looks and when spring comes, you’ll be glowing.  Although the pandemic isn’t merciful, there’s one good thing that it’s giving us – tons of inspiration material. The creative home looks made quarantine bearable and helped us have fun. So fun is what we are going to do this spring – no care about classics, or “appropriate” hair length and color, or cutting your bangs too short. We’re going to have fun looking exactly how we want to. Here are some inspirational spring 2021 hair trends. Bob&Bangs Bob is easy, comfortable, and stylish. Look at Kim Kardashian: her recent blunt cut bob will look amazing on anyone. Curl the ends a little and add some texture – 2021 is all about the body!  Have you been waiting for a sign to cut your hair short? Here it is – get inspired by the recent look by Gucci. You can make that hairstyle at home; just ensure that you have scissors that make precise cuts – look for them on the websites of professional hair styling shops – like, for example, Scissor Tec. If you prefer classics and want to avoid mistakes at any cost, try a chin-length bob (also known as French bob). And don’t forget about the bangs if you want to try something different!  Choppy Pixies One of the most stylish 2021 hairstyles is a pixie. Always wanted to try it but never actually had the guts to do it? Now it’s high time! Try to make it a little longer than classic Audrey pixie, […]

Let’s Discuss The Return Of Oversized Bags

There’s nothing that’s given us greater pleasure than the comeback of the oversized bag. Oh, how we love massive statement bags. And, this season designers are certainly having a love affair with huge arm candy. There were extra large sling bags at Sies Marjan, humongous croissant bags at Nanushka, giant soft sack bags at Jacquemus, Hermes and Bottega Veneta, super-sized bucket bags at Marni and Lanvin, enormous shoulder bags at Gabriela Hearst and oversized clutch bags at Givenchy , Balenciaga and Celine…. Now we know what you’re thinking. Okay, oversized bags can be impractical. But, this is one of those instances (like with killer heels) when statement style trumps function. And if you’re anything like us, in the sense that you’re inclined to carry everything including the kitchen sink, then can we make the case that large bags aren’t just an accessory to lust over, they’re a necessity. Bottega Veneta definitely leads the pack with their oversized offerings, but Gucci, Wandler and Saint Laurent aren’t too far behind. Ahead we feature our favourite on-trend bags to buy now. Our Edit Of The Best Sweatshirts

Like the blazer, a quality pair of jeans and the little black dress, the sweatshirt is a crucial part of a capsule wardrobe. It’s comfortable, always on-trend and versatile. Best of all, on the days when you haven’t a clue what to wear, the sweatshirt is always a winner.  Originating in Medieval Europe the sweatshirt has evolved from tunics worn by Monks and hooded sweatshirts created for workers to keep warm in the 1930’s, to sports sweatshirts designed for the US military to train in.  Featured in movies such as Rocky, championed in hip-hop music videos and worn on the fashion catwalks by stunning models, the sweatshirt has been elevated to an iconic piece that we can’t live without.  There are however a couple of misconceptions surrounding the sweatshirt that need to be debunked. The first being that the sweatshirt is solely for skaters and secondly that it’s a loungewear piece only to be worn while in the confines of one’s own home. This couldn’t be farther from the truth.  While there’s nothing better than chilling on the sofa and watching your fave Netflix series in a pair of leggings and a cozy sweatshirt, the rise in athleisure has demanded that the sweatshirt be seen as a versatile piece that’s capable of complementing both casual and smart outfits.  Designers including Burberry, Givenchy, Chloe and many more have created trendy versions of the staple item, so much so that you’d be hard pushed not to find a mainstream spring/summer or autumn/winter collection that doesn’t include the sweatshirt.  Meanwhile street style stars have given us countless ways to style the sweatshirt, such as playing with silhouettes and teaming with wide-leg trousers and a blazer or effortless streetwear pairings, such as joggers and sneakers.  Here we highlight three on trend women’s designer sweatshirts […]

Top 6 Fashion Trends that Died in 2018: 6 New Trends That Will Take Their Place

Yet another year comes to an end and with it comes the time to say goodbye to the fashion trends that died in 2018. These fashion trends have experienced momentary stardom. However, they are now on the verge of being replaced by new 2019 fashion trends. Even though these fashion trends are out of style now, that doesn’t mean you need to arrange a fashion garage sale right this moment. As any fashion aficionado knows, what’s considered tacky and outdated now can surely make a dramatic comeback tomorrow. Right from ripped jeans to biker jackets, many thought-to-be-dead trends made multiple comebacks and some like fishnet jeans even overstayed their welcome. Here’s our advice. Instead of selling your outdated fashion stuff, get them professionally cleaned and vacuum-pack them. Unless you own a pair of tight-fitted, leopard-print pants. Those babies need to be burned and buried for good. Therefore, with a heavy heart and an emptier wardrobe, let’s bid these fashion trends a final goodbye. May they rest in peace. Real Fur Coats Who knew real fur would still be around in 2018. Yet somehow real fur coats and other fur-made fashion items survived the relentless demonstrations by PETA and animal lovers up until this year. So, what changed in 2018 that made this fashion trend go kaput. Well, the biggest setback for the pro-fur movement was the fact that many fashion labels announced their intent to go fur-free. Right from Versace and Gucci to Michael Kors decided that making fashion wear with real fur is not worth the negative press. With luxury fashion brands going anti-fur, the Paris Fashion Week this year showcased a slim selection of fur-made fashion wear. In fact, it’s safe to assume that Paris Fashion Week next year is going to be completely fur-free. Another win for […]

The Crossover Between High-End Fashion And Art

Have you ever wondered about the connection between fashion and art? Believe it or not, these two creative fields have influenced each other for centuries. From using fine art techniques in fashion design to clothing serving as inspiration for famous paintings, the fashion and art worlds are more intertwined than you may think. In this article, we’ll look at the most iconic examples of fashion meeting art. Understanding these crossovers gives an appreciation for how creative expression can take many forms. 1. The Robe à la Française Back in the 18th century, the ornate French Rococo style was all the rage. This movement within the decorative arts focused on elaborate, asymmetrical designs that prioritized decoration over simplicity. Rococo style also utilized pastel colors, gold filigree, and nature-inspired motifs. The robe à la Française reflected many of these Rococo ideals. This garment featured a fitted bodice with a low-cut square neckline that flowed into a full skirt. The overskirt was parted to reveal an underskirt, often intricately embroidered or trimmed in lace or ribbons. This iconic dress mirrored common Rococo themes seen in painting, sculpture, and architecture at the time. The robe à la Française demonstrates how fashion absorbed artistic tendencies within the cultural zeitgeist of the period. 2. Cubist Fashion In the early 20th century, Cubism was shaking up the art world. This avant-garde movement, led by Picasso and Braque, fragmented figures and objects into abstract, geometric forms. Cubist artists aimed to depict subjects from multiple viewpoints at once. Cubist style also influenced fashion design. Decorative cubist patterns were incorporated into fabrics, like those produced by the Wiener Werkstätte textile workshop. Fashion designers like Sonia Delaunay also experimented with cubist-inspired motifs in her garments. Delaunay’s Robe Simultanée, for example, featured colorful interlocking rectangles reminiscent of analytic cubism. Just as Cubist […]

How To Care For Your Dresses

Most of the materials that make your formal attire and dresses so lovely need a little extra love when it comes to caring for them, and you don’t want to ruin your gowns before you have a chance to show them off! Whether you’re dealing with luxe silk, elegant lace, or stunning embroidery, here are a few quick tips for keeping your dresses in tip-top condition! Silk Because of its delicate and luxurious nature, you might think silk always needs to be dry cleaned. Not true! As long as you have colorfast fabric, you can gently clean your silk garments at home, just like you can with wool and cashmere as opposed to using dry cleaning services. Top tip: Test for colorfastness on an inconspicuous inside seam. If the color “bleeds” out of the fabric after being rubbed with a damp cloth, you should probably leave the cleaning to the professionals. If it stays put, you can hand wash it with gentle detergent and cold water! How to handwash silk: Add your garment to a clean sink filled with cold water and mild detergent. The fabric should release any dirt or spots quickly, so don’t rough up the fibers by scrubbing! Swirl your garment around the water, taking care to be extra gentle! After its nice and clean, drain the sink and rinse the item with cold water. To dry, lay your garment down on a clean, white cotton towel and gently blot the water out, making sure not to rub fibers roughly. After it’s been blotted, let it drip-dry on a hanger, away from direct sunlight.   Top tip: If you’re dealing with stains, wash the whole garment with a homemade stain remover containing two cups of cold water with two tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice! Lace […]

Making History: Beyoncé On The Cover Of Vogue’s September Issue

It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for ever since Vogue announced Beyoncé would be the cover star of it’s much-anticipated September issue. Here are the images of Queen Bey, as shot by 23-year-old photographer Tyler Mitchell. Yes, you read correctly, he’s just 23, but most importantly Mitchell is the first African-American photographer to shoot Vogue’s cover in its 126-year history, making this a very historic moment. As part of the feature, we’re treated to two cover shots as well as various images of  Beyoncé taken in a country home on the outskirts of London. The first cover shot sees the mum-of-three seated wearing a floral headpiece and a Gucci dress and in the other she opts for a belted stunning strapless gown (the latter possibly being our favourite).  Taking a minimalist approach, gone is the high-glam we know and love Beyoncé for and in its place is a barely-there look, which was in fact intentional. In an as-told-to interview by journalist Clover Hope which accompanies the editorial, the singer said, “I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies. That’s why I stripped away the wigs and hair extensions and used little makeup for this shoot.” And what’s it like working with one of the most famous women in the world? Speaking to Vogue, Mitchell said, “When she sat down for me there was immediately the kind of comfort level you’d have with a friend, which was quite unexpected.” He continues, “You’d imagine someone as famous as Beyoncé to be protective of her image, but she was really an open book—and that’s exactly what you want as a photographer. Why So Many People Choose Made In Italy

Made in Italy is a merchandise mark related to all those products which are created and packed in Italy. It refers to all fields, from food to design, but the real Made in Italy makes people think of fashion. When we heard this mark, we think about Milan with its Fashion Week and shows, about incredible fashion designers such as Valentino, Gucci, Armani, D&G, about handmade dresses and shoes, a glossy and stylish world. Made in Italy is worth 85 billion dollars and fashion brands account for 30% of the whole value. It is a guarantee of high quality fashion and no other country can offer Italian craftsmanship and artistry of manufacturing. That is why Made in Italy continues to grow and leads the way in terms of luxury and fashion revenues; Made in Italy widened its horizon and looked towards East markets: countries such as Russia, China and United Arab Emirates increased more than any other country their expenses for luxury and fashion goods during the past five years. But at the moment Made in Italy is chosen worldwide. Many stars wear high fashion dresses by Italian designers: Salma Hayek wore Gucci in the latest edition of BAFTA Awards, Dakota Johnson too for the  Golden Globe Awards 2018, while for the same event Diane Kruger chose Prada. Nicole Kidman loves Valentino and Angelina Jolie often wears Versace dresses. VIPs’ love for Made in Italy is also visible “on their feet”: Italian handmade shoes are a must-have for some celebrities, even when they travel in disguise. For example Jennifer Lopez has a pair of Gucci sneakers, when she is not wearing Italian dresses. In this sector, there are many Italian shoe designers, such as Loriblu, who are still manufacturing handmade shoes in Italy. They have an incredible attention to every […]

5 Trends That Will Dominate This Summer

There are few things in life that are certain, but one guarantee is that style trends are going to change by the year. What may have been hot last year certainly isn’t necessarily going to be this time around – and as the title may have suggested to you, this is what today’s guide is all about. As such, before you hit the shops in Covent Garden or the shopping destination of your choice, sit back and read on to find five trends that are going to dominate female fashion over the coming summer months. The return of the trench coat For those of you who attended any of the runway shows this year, you’ll have been expecting this first trend more than any other. Trench coats were huge at the industry events, but fortunately they come in so many styles that there is at least going to be some variety on the streets. For example, some women will be perfectly fine with the traditional trench coat. At the same time, others might attempt something a little more ambitious; with one event showcasing a style which saw two trench coats merged together; in completely different styles. Primary colors are back with a bang For years we have been talking about pastel colors, and how these were donning the runways for event after event. Well, now seems to be a time for change, with primary colors making a reappearance. This time, the runways are full of bold colors like strong reds, carnation pinks and vibrant yellows. These colors were prevalent on blazers, dresses and trousers, and it worked a treat in all cases. You need to walk with texture This is a trend that seems to flirt in and out of the industry. At the moment, it’s firmly in, with a lot of designers injecting […]

Meghan Markle Champions The LBD At Women’s Empowerment Reception

We’ve always sung the praises of the LBD and it appears Meghan Markle concurs! Make-up was kept to a minimum while her hair was worn up in her signature messy bun. We love this look and it’s possibly up there in one of our top three faves to date. 2018’s Biggest Casual Wear Trends

Casual wear is sometimes lumped into a category of its own, but even in high fashion it always has its place. The pre-season runways for 2018 were packed with styles, cuts, trends and colours that all translate effortlessly into our leisure wardrobe. If you’re looking to update your approach to casual wear in the new year, here’s a quick rundown of 2018’s biggest trends. Denim According to British Vogue, denim is making a comeback in 2018 in a big way – not that it ever truly left in the first place. Nothing says casual wear quite like denim, but now your favourite blue jeans are practically considered haute couture. Next year’s denim trends encompass absolutely everything, from slouchy jackets to tapered trousers and loose button-ups, so expect to find tonnes of options that are instantly weekend-ready. Colourful trainers Bold, bright colours will be dominating our wardrobes next year, and this extends all the way to casual footwear, too. Colourful women’s trainers are easy on our feet and offer a pop of brightness that makes even the simplest take on casual wear truly stand out. Tu’s selection of trainers showcase not only a selection of vibrant colours, but funky prints too. Shorts Though not quite as versatile as the other trends on this list – you may have to wait until spring and summer before indulging – shorts will play a big part in our 2018 leisure wardrobe. Tailored, high-waisted and even cycling shorts are all expected to return. Even silky, pyjama-style shorts have been deemed acceptable for wearing outside of a slumber party. Wide-leg trousers According to Pinterest’s top beauty and fashion pins for the future, wide-leg trousers came in at number five for big 2018 trends. Culottes and seventies-style bell bottoms were big in 2017, not least due to their ability to combine […]

Dresses Over Trousers: Yay Or Nay?

Promising to be a major player during this transitional period from spring to summer and loved by international streetstyle stars everywhere, dresses over trousers for us, is a big fat “nay”. Sadly, not all of us possess the ability to pull off all of the weird and wonderful trends that emerge every season – a super power reserved for the stylish elite that walk among us such as Rihanna, Caroline Issa and Susie Bubble.  And while there was a time when we could just about get away with skirts over jeans, the sad truth is, now we’re unable to wear neither skirts or dresses over trousers without looking like a right mess. We’ve tried glam long gowns complemented with jeans, to short floral spring dresses worn over cigarette pants, with no luck whatsoever. And so, with a heavy heart we admit defeat. Dresses worn over trousers is simply not for us. That, doesn’t mean however that we can’t appreciate the beauty of the trend when executed properly. Here’s some of our fave looks…  [Image 1, Image 2, Image 3 & 4, Image 4 & 5]

CFDA Awards 2016: Beyoncé Gives Her Most Inspirational Speech Yet!

She’s currently working on global domination with her Formation world tour but not even that could keep Beyoncé from taking time out to attend the CFDA awards which took place last night in New York, to accept the Fashion Icon Award. It was all very, hush hush as to whom would have the honour of receiving the prestigious award but with 2016 being her year of major slay both in the music and style arena, there really was no competition. Wearing a crystal embellished Givenchy tux and a wide-brimmed hat, Queen Bey took it waaaay back in her acceptance speech, reminding us of the days when Mama Tina would create their costumes. Remember those days? Even we were a tad nostalgic thinking back to those matching Destiny Child outfits, the clashing colours and ripped skirts as well as the blinged out dresses – all made by hand by Tina Knowles herself. Speaking to the fashion industry’s elite at the Hammerstein Ballroom she said, “Starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels didn’t really want to dress four black country curvy girls, and we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams. My mother and my uncle, God rest his soul, made all of our first costumes, individually sewing hundreds of crystals and pearls, putting so much passion and love into every small detail. When I wore these clothes I felt like Khaleesi. I had an extra suit of armour. It was so much deeper than any brand name. My mother is fabulous and beautiful and she’s here tonight. My mother, my grandmother, and my uncle are always with me so I cannot fail. My mother actually […]

Summer Fashion Trends The Man In Your Life Needs To Know About!

Whether your other half is fashion-conscious and therefore already familiar with many of the spring-summer catwalk trends, or if he’s not too clued up on fashion at all, this mini guide is exactly what you need if you’re looking for highly happening styles for the special man in your life. So, what are the fashion trends that all guys need to be aware of over the next few months? The breakthrough of the baggy trouser Baggy trousers have been a bubbling-under trend for a few years now, but 2016 has seen them become much more fully embraced by designers. From quilted trousers to wide-leg jeans, there has been no shortage of new trousers signalling that ‘slouchy’ no longer has to signify ‘lazy’. Grey days ahead Some wisecrack might suggest that it’s simply the logical response from designers to the persistence of the good old British drizzle even during the warmer months, but whatever the reasons behind it, subdued hues are definitely ‘in’ right now. Grey’s not merely suitable for shirts, either – take a look at the Dickies shorts range for pieces that combine understated hues with an undoubted sense of fun.    Greens are good for you On the subject of colour, green has also been working the spring-summer catwalks, although not just as a single head-to-toe shade, as may have been the case in past years. That’s because 2016 is all about the mixing and matching of different green hues together, which have the potential to create some seriously summery and sophisticated contrasts. Jeans are getting even more distressed Won’t someone think of that poor denim? Yep, jeans are coming under greater punishment than ever this summer, disappointing those who may have hoped for a return to an obsession with more pristinely cut styles. So, whatever jeans he may have in the back of […]

Two Stylish Ways To Wrap Up Warm

Burberry’s lasting impact on the fashion industry

The story of Burberry’s remarkable turnaround over the past decade has been told often; as a parable for brands that are stuck in the doldrums, or any company looking to take advantage of new market conditions. That shouldn’t diminish, however, what the company has achieved. The figures that have come out of Burberry’s rise from near-brand exile to global domination are truly staggering. Angela Ahrendts took over as Burberry’s CEO in 2006, with the remit of improving Burberry’s brand reputation, which had sank over the previous few years. A year later, Burberry was featured in Interbrand’s top 100 global brands list for the first time, at 95. It has since climbed the rankings to take the 73 spot, one of only seven luxury brands to make the list alongside Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermes, Cartier, Prada and Tiffany. From 2010 to now, its rise on the brand charts has been steady and impressive which mirrors its rise on the stock markets. In 2009, Burberry grew 160%; its share value increasing from £230 to £598 (£368). The next year, it grew £555, to £1153. Remarkably, Burberry did not then plateau: its share value at the beginning of this year was over £1500. Over five years, the fashion company has swelled over 550% in value. Two and a half years after taking over at Burberry, Ms. Ahrendts’ vision paid off spectacularly, and those that stuck with the company through a tough 2008 saw amazing returns. Now the company is worth around £6.5 billion, a value which puts it in the top 100 UK share listings, and earned it a place in IG’s (a UK CFD trading company) ten iconic UK shares series. But beyond acting as a lesson for other businesses, what impact has Burberry’s ascension had on the markets, both in fashion […]

5 spring & summer 2015 handbags we’re lusting after!

Fashion month is well and truly over, and the spring/summer 2015 trends that the celebs will no doubt be rocking imminently have all made their way down the respective New York, London, Milan and Paris catwalks. The A-listers may be the first to step out in the new-season pieces, but we already have our favourites which we ourselves are one day hoping to be the proud owners of. Designer handbags have been particularly strong this season, and we definitely think that our first SS15 purchase is going to be for something small, leathery, and tote-ally gorgeous. Sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves… Here’s our top 5 SS15 handbags. Enjoy! Gucci. Gucci bags are iconic for a reason; if you want a handbag that’s instantly recognisable, a bag that will serve you well for decades to come, then this one answers all your prayers. We love the trans-seasonal brown colour and the fact that it’ll go with pretty much every outfit you can think of, but the strap that comes in the classic red and green Gucci stripe is the cherry on top that seals the deal for us. Give it to us now! Burberry. The brand never fails to disappoint when it comes to new and innovative lust-worthy designs, and the Burberry Bee bag is no exception. Cute, bright, practical… everything we want in a spring/summer bag and so much more! It comes in many cute and quirky colour combos, but there’s something about the feminine pink and yellow version that speaks – nay, screams – to us more than the rest. Coach. Coach was one of the first brands to debut its SS15 collection, and the memory of its bags stayed with us for the entirety of Fashion Month. Although we drooled over many of its bags – the classic […]

5 of our favourite key Autumn 2014 trends

If the end of another summer is leaving you blue, then take a look at the upcoming fashion trends for autumn 2014 and pick yourself up with some seasonal retail therapy. Oversized Scarves: No autumn/winter wardrobe is complete without a scarf and this year, it’s all about oversized wraps and wearable blankets. Bright and bold patterns in woollen knits and lightweight, romantic silks graced the catwalks of Burberry Prorsum, Vivienne Westwood and Issa this year. But if you’re looking for something a little more sedate that’s suitable for day-to-day wear then Winser London offer two elegant, oversized yet manageable scarves that are perfect for softening the structured lines of a trouser suit – another of this season’s key trends – or layering up over dresses and casual weekend clothes. 1960’s Throwback: Every year the world’s leading designers pay homage to a bygone era and this season, those classic asymmetric shapes, bold prints and short hemlines of the 1960’s were favoured in the Valentino, Gucci and Luis Vuitton collections. To give your wardrobe a classic nod to the 1960’s, pair cropped trousers, denims or an A-line skirt with a polo-neck jumper. Once again, Winser London have got this trend spot on with a selection of polo-necks in five warm, autumnal colours that flatter any skin tone and which are ideal for professional or cosy, casual wear. Embroidery and Embellishment If you’re looking for a show-stopping dress for an event this autumn, then delicate materials in rich tones that are beautifully embellished or embroidered are where it’s at. Oscar de la Renta, Alberta Ferretti, Valentino and Roberto Cavalli all included sensational, sheer and embroidered gowns in their autumn 2014 catwalk collections. Although many high-street retailers will be adopting this trend, Winser London have applied beautiful embroidery to a delicately tailored dress for […]

Claire Danes for Harper’s Bazaar UK October

If you thought the Harper’s Bazaar September issue was exciting, just wait ‘til you see who the mag bagged for the October issue! Continuing its hot streak of female cover stars, Harper’s Bazaar UK has tapped the gorgeous Claire Danes to appear on its October cover. Minimal, understated, autumnal… it’s the epitome of an October fashion glossy cover if you ask us, and Claire Danes couldn’t be a more perfect cover girl. The Homeland actress is posing in some truly dreamy pieces on the cover and in the editorial, including a stunning Zac Posen dress teamed with Harry Winston jewels (below), as well as Salvatore Ferragamo and Lanvin to name just a few. She also opens up about Homeland, marriage, and motherhood… “Being a mum is incredibly challenging but we still feel a pressure to talk about it in very romantic terms,” she said. “ “We all have that resentment at times and anxiety about being trapped by the role, that responsibility. And then chemically it can run riot. Your mental state, the hormonal swings are so extraordinary and singular to the female experience and they haven’t been taken very seriously or considered very deeply. “I mean, post-partum aside, even if you have the most healthy relationship with your child and have support and resources, it’s tough. It’s really tough. And there’s no “off” button. For me that was the hardest adjustment.” We commend her for being so candid about her emotions. You can read the rest of her interview in Harper’s Bazaar’s October issue – out now!

Blake Lively helps Marie Claire US celebrate its 20th birthday with stunning September issue cover

Who does Marie Claire US get to help it celebrate its 20th birthday? It obviously had to be someone good; someone with huge selling power and a huge presence in the fashion industry. And that someone is none other than former Gossip Girl Blake Lively. And what a fabulous cover it is, too! As you can imagine, Blake Lively has the perfect body, hair, attitude, and pretty much everything else that is needed to showcase fashion’s hottest threads, and that’s exactly what she does in her accompanying editorial. She also tells the mag everything about her partnership with Gucci, her brand new website Preserve, and of course, more deets about her relationship with husband Ryan Reynolds. “We’ve never gone a week without seeing each other,” she said. “There’s no major decision that I make without him. The best part is when we turn off our phones and just talk and hang out. He’s my best, best friend. What do you do with your best friend? You do nothing.” Aww, don’t they sound adorable? The Marie Claire US September issue hits newsstands on August 19th, so not that long to wait to read the interview in full and gaze (in awe) at Blake’s pictures.

Blake Lively’s 73 question challenge for American Vogue August issue

American Vogue has once again given meaning to that “save the best ‘til last” phrase as it debuted it August 2014 issue featuring the one and only Blake Lively. How good does she look on the cover? We definitely think it’s been worth the wait! The former Gossip Girl actress was shot by Mario Testino for the publication’s annual Age Issue, and looked the epitome of perfection in the process. As well as looking phenomenal in each and every one of her pictures (standard!), the actress, Gucci ambassadress and style maven opened up about pretty much everything thanks to an epic 73 question challenge posed by the mag. Trust us, it’s a good’un! We learnt that she wore a coral dress to her prom, that she identifies with all the men in Sex and the City (interesting, especially as we always had her down as a Carrie Bradshaw), and what life with her and Ryan Reynolds is really like. We won’t spoil it for you, but prepare for lots of “ooh”ing and “aww”ing as it’s pretty darn adorable. Especially when you find out about the super personal gifts they give each other…

Cheryl Cole wows in DSquared2 and Philosophy for Elle UK August cover

We’ve barely flicked through all the July fashion glossies – and are still waiting patiently for the American Vogue July cover to surface – so we haven’t even started thinking about August issues yet. But lo and behold, the Elle UK August cover has found itself online and we’re not gonna lie – we’re pretty grateful that it has. We’re so thankful that the cover has arrived sooner rather than later, as it features the one and only Miss Cheryl Cole. How incredible does she look on the cover? Cheryl was shot by Ben Morris, and is rocking a pretty drool-worthy selection of designer threads on the cover and editorial shoot, including pieces from Gucci, J Brand, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Christopher Kane. Oh and in case you wanted to know what she’s wearing on the cover, it’s DSquared2, Philosophy and Manolo Blahnik. Phew – we think that’s everything! This is one issue of the fashion glossy that you won’t want to miss, as Cheryl opens up about some pretty deep subjects, including being on the verge of a breakdown, how she feels about having children, and why she chose to return to The X Factor. Like we said, it’s un-missable!

Resell Your Threads for A Lot More Than You Thought: Online Uprising Avoids Consignment

When it comes to what you wear, you may want to start thinking about buying designer brands after all. If you’re a Target shopper when it comes to picking up your casuals, jeans, or clothes for work, it’s time to switch your game up, and here’s why: clothes have resale value—a lot of it. We’ve always known that high end brands fetch more when we opt to resell them, but the fact of the matter is that when we gain weight, lose weight, or simply stop wearing specific items, they wind up in the back of the closet, being given away to friends and relatives, or donated to thrift shops like Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Savers. Even for those of us savvy enough to make the effort to make some money back on our threads end up in consignment shops—and with the percentages back they offer those whose clothes they sell, the return is usually about 50 percent of the resale value. Even with clothes that probably shouldn’t be sold to consignment stores, it’s a practical investment to look for brands that will stand the test of time as opposed to a lower quality item, saving you money in the long run. Now there’s a new and better way for online clothes sellers, buyers, and even the online ecommerce sites engaging in selling clothes for those of us spring cleaning our wardrobes, whether we’re unleashing designer brand jeans, work casuals, or designer bags and gently used shoes and accessories. Those of us unloading our closets stand to make a lot more—usually around 30 percent more than the old-fashioned brick and mortar consignment store method. What’s more, retailers and online resellers are wisely creating what will likely be long term partnerships based on the knowledge that the average American enjoys […]

Blake Lively, Chanel and a Cannes Film Festival red carpet = perfection!

Yep, we’re writing about Blake Lively at the Cannes Film Festival for the second day in a row. We don’t think anyone will blame us though, as we just fell off our office swivel chairs when we first clapped eyes on her latest look. Although Blake Lively is the face of Gucci Premiere and has looked sensational in its dresses this month, she decided to go for a different designer for her latest Cannes appearance. And the only designer to substitute Gucci for has to be Chanel, right? Blake Lively literally sparkled on the Mr Turner premiere red carpet in a bedazzling Chanel Couture dress that is pretty much what all sartorial dreams are made of. She teamed it with Sophia Webster heels, an abundance of exquisite Lorraine Schwartz jewellery, and her signature effortless beach waves (which we learnt are a lot lower maintenance than we thought). And how much do you love the pocket detailing on that dress? We need a moment to process how one woman can look so perfect; please excuse us…

Mrs Ryan Reynolds looked breath-taking (there’s a sentence we’ve said time and time again and will probably never get bored of saying!) as she attended the Grace of Monaco premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. She chose to wear a stunning scarlet Gucci Premiere dress for the occasion, which came complete with a sinfully sexy thigh high slit – the perfect excuse for Blake to get her long, bronzed pins out! We didn’t think anything was going to top the Gucci Premiere dress she wore to the Met Gala a few weeks ago, but we think this might have just done it! Blake Lively wearing Gucci Premiere on a big red carpet is pretty much expected now that she is the face of the fragrance, but that certainly doesn’t mean we’re going to tire of it. Akin to Jennifer Lawrence who seldom fail to impress in Christian Dior, we think Blake Lively has a lot more jaw-dropping Gucci looks to present to us.

Carine Roitfeld reveals “red” theme for this year’s amfAR Cinema Against AIDS fashion show

For the third year in a row, former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld will be hosting a fashion show for the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala in Cannes. And just like the two fashion shows before it, this year’s has a very distinctive theme… Carine’s first fashion show had a “black” theme, while last year’s, which was dedicated to Elizabeth Taylor, was all about gold. This year however, Carine is paying tribute to Marilyn Monroe, and has chosen the colour “red” as the theme for the fashion show. Expect to see gowns from the likes of Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Roberto Cavalli, Chanel, Christian Dior, Christopher Kane, Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Givenchy, Gucci and Tom Ford on the catwalk, all of which will be auctioned off to raise money for the wonderful and worthwhile cause. This year’s event will be chaired by John Travolta, Milla Jovovich, Harvey Weinstein and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. amfAR’s annual Cinema Against AIDS gala will take place in Cannes on Thursday May 22nd. We’re excited to see the events unfold… [WWD] [Image]
