Round the table with Henry Holland and Gemma Cairney

As you well know, here at MFL we’re rather partial to a fashion TV series or two, and none more so than Frock Me with TK Maxx, back on TV screens in the UK for a second series to brighten up the bleakest Sunday mornings. Hosted by super-style icon Alexa Chung, London designer Henry Holland and Radio 1 style expert Gemma Cairney, Frock Me follows fashion through its rampant relationship with music as it highlights top trends for the season, chats to the very best in the business, gives DIY styling tips, and shows you how people on the street are working – and styling – the season’s best trends… in a nutshell. Naturally, we were obliged to catch up with Henry and Gemma when TK Maxx invited us to London’s Zetter hotel last week where, alongside a few other bloggers, we quizzed the pair on all things Frock Me and fashion. We’ve seen three shows so far, can you tell us what we can expect from the rest of the series? HH: There’s a show about romance, there’s a show about Americana, there’s a show about festivals; so there’s those theme-shows, and you can expect to see Sophie Ellis-Bextor, you can expect to see Gabriella Cilmi, we’ve had the Future Heads, Marina and the Diamonds, Paloma Faith – she was good, and everyone did live too. And then there’s some very ridiculous sketches… GC: We’ve got prints in Bristol [just aired] which was fun, I actually put a couple up against each other for the Frock Off, and the girl really looks like Alexa so that was good. And then we’ve got in Birmingham Americana – we ended up with about 200 people surrounding us in the middle of town for the final section, so we were kind of […]

Lusting after: The Roady by Yves Saint Laurent

The latest bag from Yves Saint Laurent for Autumn/Winter ’09/10 has been unveiled , it’s the Roady, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. Already a huge hit with the fashion elite, Selma Blair, Rachel Bilson, Mary-Kate Olsen, Kylie and Rihanna have all been glimpsed gracing this glorious tote, and I must say, I’m pretty jealous. “Less is more” is an age old cliche, but the design gurus at YSL must have had this moto in mind when they created this master-piece. The Roady, made from beautiful butter-soft leather, features a small leather hook strap , perfect sitting snug under the arm or casually slung on the forearm, and offers space galore for all those handbag essentials. YSL offer the tote in red or black, but the black ruched Roady à la Mary-Kate and Kylie is my absolute favourite. Simple, subtle, relaxed sophistication at its best. The Roady retails at £735 for the patent leather, and is available at the Yves Saint Laurent store, 32-33 Old Bond Street, London SW1 (020 7493 1800).

Solange’s not making a statement

Beyonce Knowles is bemused with the attention her new look has generated – she was pictured with closely cropped hair on Wednesday – and insists she opted for the look as it is so easy to look after. She wrote on her Twitter blog: “dont. want. a. edge. up. or a perm. because. im not trying. to make this ‘a style’ or a statement. i. just. wanted. to. be. free. from. the. bondage. that. black. women sometimes. put. on. themselves. with. hair. Sasha Fierce to launch fashion range

Beyonce Knowles’ latest fashion range will be aimed at schoolgirls. The ‘Crazy in Love’ singer has teamed up with her mother Tina Knowles to launch Sasha Fierce for Dereon, which will include shoes, glasses, lingerie, sportswear and jewellery. Tina will create the clothing and accessories but she insists Beyonce will be very involved with the designs. She explained to WWD: “She definitely tells me what she likes and what she doesn’t. It was her suggestion to line the rips of the jeans with the mesh and lace. It makes the jeans look really different from what’s out there.”

How not to wear YSL caged heels!

One of the most beautiful items of Spring/Summer 09 was ruined for fashion lovers by the sight of them on Beyonce’s feet. Beyonce has always been one for eccentric fashion tastes and has on a number of occasions got it very very wrong. But over recent years she has started to get it very right. She looked good in her refined and stylish. So I was horrified to see Beyonce attempting to wear those beautiful £1,000 YSL shoes without an inch of style. Some of you may think I’m being harsh, and perhaps I am but this is not a good outfit for so many reasons. The trilby paired with giant hoops isn’t a great look, then you’ve got the see-though vest paired with some not very flattering ripped crops. The belt is probably the most offending item as it looks like it’s meant to match the shoes when it just doesn’t. The final issue is that although her legs are superstar gorgeous, pairing high leg shoes with crops always looks wrong. I would have loved to have seen her pair them with a sundress or maxi skirt, they do need to be prettied up just because they are such a dominant style. She’s such a gorgeous girl but I really don’t feel that this outfit does her or those amazing YSLs justice. How do you rate Beyonce’s style? Are you loving or loathing her throw it on look?

The must have item: Aretha Franklin’s hat

You might have thought Michelle Obama was the belle of the ball, or that Rhianna and Beyonce stole the show in their delicious gowns, or even that it was the little Obama’s looking cute as buttons that the public would want to copy. But oh no, it would seem the woman to cause the most hype was Aretha Franklin. The iconic singer performed at the Inauguration ceremony wearing an outfit of tonal greys and pearl earrings. But it was her statement hat that has been causing quite a fashion stir. The felt cloche hat with a large bow encrusted with Swarovski crystals has led to a massive demand for copies. The hat was made by Luke Song, who custom-made the design especially for Aretha. Based in Detroit, Song has been making hats for Aretha for the last 20 years. But since the ceremony, Song has received floods of requests for the same hat. Unfortunately the hat was solely made for Aretha, however Song has decided to create an alternate hat with ribbon detailing. This version costs $179 (£129). Customers have apparently been snapping up the consumer friendly version. Who can really resist a crystal encrusted bow? [images]

Golden Globes 2009: Fashion Round-up (Part 1)

How nice has it been to be able to just shamelessly indulge in red carpet fashion from the Golden Globes? Maybe it’s because we didn’t get the opportunity last year but I’ve loved every minute of it. Expect a more subdued ceremony this year we were told. Well, if “subdued equals classy, sophisticated and demure then I hope the Oscars are seriously sombre. O.K, now let’s talk trends. Strapless gowns were popular this year along with the usual one shouldered options which tend to be a red carpet favourite. The odd bright jewel tones courtesy of Cameron Diaz and Eva Longoria was much needed amongst a sea of nude and neutral shades and classic dark hues while Hollywood glamour at its finest came in the form of fishtail hemlines and bold statement necklaces!

Polls: Rihanna’s Hair Evolution

Celebs are known to chop and change their looks fairly often, and Rihanna is no exception. Since last year, the pop singer has debuted so many different hair styles, it’s been hard to keep up. What’s next, a shaved head? Starting off with wavy and voluminous long hair that gave Beyonce a run for her money, Rihanna effortlessly gave off a glam, sex kitten vibe. Then came the asymmetrical bob that quickly started a media frenzy and showed that Barbadian beauty was a risk taker and wanted to be different. Soon after, it was the Katie Holmes helmut bob which took shape. The “do” looked great framing her long and thin face, but it was unlike her to follow the crowd. Most recently, our hair chameleon shocked by opting for a barely there pixie cut with side swept bang… a look that only women with great cheekbones and stunning features, like herself, can pull off. I personally liked the asymmetrical shag best, it was fun, stylish and showed that the pop star was comfortable in her own skin. {democracy:17}

2007 Fashion Trends: 10 of the best!

Eclectic is the word that comes to mind when we think of the trends that hit us this year. Styles came and went at a frenzied pace, some we loved, some wouldn’t go away soon enough. It was also the year that designers took their collections mainstream, partnering with high street stores to democratise fashion. From high waist lines to ballet flats galore, 2007 fashion was quite timeless. Here’s a look at the best fashion trends in 2007! 10. High-Waist Lines We still get chills when we think of that dreaded Jessica Simpson photo (this look is not for everyone. But after we caught a glimpse of Eva Mendes sporting this saucy, high-waist pencil skirt, we wanted to try looking like a sexy pin-up girl too! 9. Christian Louboutin Heels Manolo who? After years of absolute domination thanks to our favourite show, SATC, we finally saw another designer, Christian Louboutin, steal the soles of celebrities everywhere making a little flash of a red from the bottom of your shoe an accessory and fashion statement in itself. For more advice on fashionable shoes, check out Shoe Adviser for the latest shoe reviews. 8. Ballet Flats Three cheers for a trend that gave our weary feet a rest! Ballet flats did away with their once orthopedic image, and became staples for on-the-go, jet-setting gals everywhere. Hopefully this fashion godsend will stick with us a little while longer. 7. Year-round Scarves No matter the temperature outside, leaving home without a scarf around the neck left us feeling a little bit exposed. Overwhelming celeb’s tiny frames, we couldn’t help but wonder if Hollywood starlets were trying to keep warm or shield themselves from the paparazzi. 6. Belt it out Creating girly silhouettes with belts of all shapes and sizes was all the rage this year. From wide, […]

Golden Globes 2007

I refrained from reviewing any of the looks yesterday from the Golden Globes, mainly because I was slightly put off by this pose from Beyonce. I don’t know how narcissistic someone must be to strike that kind of pose on the red carpet of all places, but it was distasteful to say the least. What did I think of her dress? It was a beautiful creation by Elie Saab but not the diva’s best choice, I would have liked to have seen her in an understated colour, looking a lot more demure and with less bling. My two favourites on the night were Cameron Diaz in Valentino and Sienna Miller wearing Marchesa. I’m probably one of the few to appreciate these two and I’m sure they will be subject to a lot of ridicule because of their choices but I liked the fact that they were brave and didn’t play it too safe. Cameron’s red lips along with her dark hair complimented her dress and the black bow added a pretty touch to the one shouldered gown.

Interview with Ryan Leslie

It’s extremely difficult to define or summarise the work of Ryan Leslie in the small space afforded by a blog post, but I shall aim to try. A Harvard graduate at 19, Leslie is credited for his discovery of young rnb star Cassie, and famed for producing work for artists such as Beyonce, Britney Spears and Donell Jones just to name a few. Do a little googling and you can’t help but be impressed by the level of interaction he maintains with his fan base. With a regularly updated video blog, and myspace page, Leslie also puts his extensive knowledge of online marketing into his global marketing and media company NextSelection Lifestyle Group. One can only wonder where he finds the time to tour, promote his own musical career and stay fashionable. I managed to grab a little of Leslie’s time to get an insight into his fashion life… Favourite designer: My favourite designer would have to be myself. Second would have to be Hedi Slimane, John Galliano, and Tom Ford. Definition of your style:My style is defined by my state of mind at any given moment, which is perpetually evolving. How much work/effort is put into your clothing and style? Is there a process which an artist has to go through to ensure the right image is portrayed?I basically wear a uniform everyday which affords me the opportunity to focus on new entrepreneurial ventures to expand the NextSelection brand. That uniform is a personal style statement reflecting a mind state that is focused on the advancement of an enterprise. Most artists have stylists. Piece of clothing in your wardrobe which gets the most wear?My pair of custom jeans made by my personal tailor, Roger Hinds in Boston. It’s extremely common now for an artist to have a fashion label, […]

Tina won’t be questioned…

An unprepared Tina Knowles completely folded under questioning at a recent Macy’s press conference, to promote the launch of House of Dereon’s boutique in the store. When asked by US consumer reporter for WBBM-TV Dorothy Tucker about the manufacturing problems with the product sizes, Tina Knowles abruptly cut her off and demanded that her question be cut out…. Tucker to Tina: “They’re beautiful [clothes],” she started, “but the next question — I don’t quite understand it, and maybe you guys can explain it for me — your clothes are sold in about a dozen stores in the Chicago area. We did get a phone call from a couple of those stores who said they had to send the production back, that there was a poor fit, the tops weren’t …” Tina to Tucker: “Why would you, wait, wait, wait, we’re going to cut that off. Why would you do that? You’re here to interview us about the clothes, in a positive light.” To say that Beyonce looked extremely uncomfortable is an understatement….. Watch the video here

House of Dereon launches to a mixed reaction

So Beyonce’s new line is causing quite a stir, some think its way too expensive while others can’t get enough. Either way, many are talking about the debut of the House of Dereon. Beyonce has released a statement saying, ” the aim is to fuse celebrity power and design artistry into a brand of global importance.” Intending to offer affordable couture, furs, ready-to-wear, denim and casual sportswear, the line is named after her seamstress grandma and according to the bootylicious babe its theme is, taking nothing and turning it into something because that’s what my grandmother did with all kinds of fabrics. She just turned everything into masterpieces, and that’s what my mother does.” Could Beyonce be a bit deranged? Tina’s creations are far from masterpieces, more like god awful! Destiny Child’s style has drastically changed since they were released from wearing the nightmare that was Tina Knowles designs. And they emerged more stylish and glam then ever…. It’s very likely her grandma did create something out of nothing but today, Miss and Mrs Knowles are far from doing they same. With a great deal of start up capital enabling them to invest in better fabrics than most, this really cant be what Beyonce’s referring to as nothing. It’s bad enough she’s joined the whole celebrity cum fashion designer posse who are determined to take over the industry, but trying to justify it, with a lame grandma theme really doesn’t sound too good. The collection isn’t as bad as Tina’s earlier work, but the House of Dereon hasn’t really made or added any creative differences to the industry. Nevertheless sales of the label probably won’t reflect this, and everyone will most likely run out to buy pieces because Miss Knowles supposedly designed it. Jeans are currently available for purchase on […]

Romero Bryan

Romero Bryan has achieved what most designers only dream of. His designs have been worn by Kate Moss, Beyonce, Cameron Diaz, Victoria Beckham and Usher. In 2003 his talent was recognised by the Royal Bank of Scotland when he was listed as no. 5 in the Rich list 2020 with a prediction of being worth £30 million and unlike most he remains extremely down to earth about his success. Having just graduated from the London College of Fashion Romero began designing in his early teens, and received recognition at the age of 16 when singer/actress Samantha Mumba wore one of his designs to the Brit awards. With prospects of a great future ahead of him, we managed to catch up with Romero before he embarks on his career. It’s becoming very common now for our British designers to jump ship and go to New York, is this something you would consider? Well I will be leaving for the BIG NYC August 5th, in the hope of finding a job or at least new clients there to buy my new clothing line. As you may see my graduate collection was somehow different to anything i’ve ever designed before. It wa much more mature, simple yet sexy. Its sexy style came from movement rather than exposing areas, in which I’ve done in the past. So with new market in mind, I thought, hey why not try a different clientele. America watch out here I come……… Do you plan to venture into menswear? Eventually, but for now I’d like to focus on one thing at a time, and that is conquering the womenswear first. Which fabrics do you prefer working with and why? I love chiffons and denim. Chiffon because I love its fludity, its movement can be so sexy yet sophistcated depending […]
