Most memorable fashion moments of 2010

As we battle the post-holiday blues and prepare for what the new year has in store, we’re still reliving what last year had to offer – and in fashion, there were enough dramatic twists and turns to keep us on the edge of our sartorial seat all year long. From Alexander McQueen’s tragic death in February to the frenzy following William and Kate’s royal engagement in November, take a look at the highlights and lowlights that have made the most memorable fashion moments of 2010. Lee Alexander McQueen Following the designers death in February, the fashion world came together to mourn the loss of one of the world’s greatest design talents with a special memorial service at September’s London Fashion Week. His last collection was unveiled without him at a private show just one month after his death – shortly after, Sarah Burton was named as his successor, and unveiled her first solo collection at Paris Fashion Week. Celebrating his life and work, McQueen was last month honoured posthumously with the Outstanding Achievement Award at 2010’s British Fashion Awards. Naomi Campbell She’s had her fair share of controversy, what with being accused of attacking her New York driver – for which she didn’t face charges – and being sued by her former agent for perjury, but Namoi Campbell has had her ups too. Her Fashion for Relief catwalk show reunited the fashion greats for a worthy cause and went down as a storming success, Dolce & Gabbana payed special homage to her at Fashion’s Night Out, and the super picked up the Special Recognition Award at the BFA’s to boot. Fashion’s Night Out (and In) Fashion’s Night Out proved more successful in its second year than it did the first, persuading even the biggest names in fashion to get involved […]

Alber Elbaz on thin models and fashion bloggers

Other than rumours that have cropped up a couple of times that he’s set to replace Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel – he’s not, in his own words, FYI – Alber Elbaz has stayed relatively quiet, but we knew that wouldn’t last too long: today he’s thrown caution to the wind and weighed in on thin models and fashion bloggers debates.

Lunchtime buy: Haute Hippie skirt

Take ruffles to the extreme with this mink skirt from Haute Hippie. Ruffles were all over the spring 2010 catwalks, at the likes of Lanvin, Dolce and Gabbana and Marc Jacobs and this skirt pinches the trend, giving the romantic look a cool and sexy twist. The tight, cascading folds of silk-chiffon remind us of the Valentino runway in particular (as shown below) which was a story of textured greys and contemporary silhouettes. This versatile piece can be dressed up or down and is the perfect item to team with neutral basics. $395 from Shopbop.

Oscars 2010: the dresses

Last night’s 82nd Academy Awards were full of memorable moments. Not only did The Hurt Locker pip the box-office smash Avatar to the post on more than one occasion, but Neil Patrick Harris (a.k.a. Doogie Howser) opened the event with a camp and surreal musical display of sequins and feathers and Ben Stiller dressed up as a Na’vi. Yep, he had the tail and everything. But before the ceremony began, we took a look at the red carpet to have a nosey at the stars to see what they were saying about their films… and more importantly, who dressed them. Here’s a few of the lovely ladies and the gowns they chose for 2010’s Oscars. Elizabeth Banks – Versace One of the best dressed of the night was Elizabeth banks who had previously hosted Oscar’s Scientific and Technical Awards the night before. Dressed in a risky grey Versace gown, Banks opted for a thin hairband with her up ‘do and peach-coloured eye shadow. Sandra Bullock – Marchesa Best Actress winner, Sandra Bullock looked every inch the Hollywood star in this glamourous number from Marchesa. It’s a bit too metallic for our liking but the hair and makeup round off the classic look perfectly. Carey Mulligan – Prada Brit newcomer Carey Mulligan has had some great red carpet moments recently and this one might just be her best yet. The black number from Prada features a flattering sweetheart neckline with a box pleat skirt that could have so easily ended in disaster. We couldn’t see closely enough but apparently, the dress is embellished with Swarovski flowers and knife, fork and scissor charms! Amanda Seyfried – Armani Prive We can’t help but think this Armani Prive drowned Amanda Seyfried. It also probably didn’t help that J Lo was wearing a fairly similar […]

MFL’s top 20 must-haves for spring

The (admittedly few) sunny days we’ve had this week have really got us looking forward to warmer months and since we’ve already given our current wardrobe a good old spring clean, we like to think that we deserve a bit of seasonal indulgence. In an early attempt to create our spring wish list, we’ve compiled some of our favourite pieces for the coming season. If we’re honest, there were a lot more than 20 but we’ve managed to narrow down our options to some key items. What are your thoughts? Let us know the items you’re after this spring! Camilla Skovgaard mules For those that aren’t too keen on the idea of clogs for spring, why not invest in a pair of mules. This pair come courtesy of one of our favourite shoe designers of the moment. £280 from Net-a-Porter. AG Adriano Goldschmied boyfriend jeans You can never go wrong with a pair of boyfriend jeans. Team these with flats or heels and if you’re feeling extra daring, add a denim shirt for Chloe’s take on spring. $225 from Shopbop. Topshop bralet Underwear as outerwear is big news this season. Have a little fun with the trend by mixing bold prints with this daring bralet from Topshop. £20 from Topshop. Mulberry Alexa Ah, the Mulberry Alexa. If you haven’t got the it bag of the year so far, then worry not. Net-a-Porter is at your service with more on the way soon… £795 from Net-a-Porter. Lipsy Grecian drape dress Body-con is soo last season. Take a tip from Alber Elbaz and Roland Mouret by opting for the drape dress. This Lipsy number gets a massive thumbs up from us. £65 from Lipsy. Golden Globes 2010: the dresses

So, in case you hadn’t heard, it RAINED at the Golden Globes and, hold the phone , some A listers even held their own umbrellas. Now, as big as that news was , we were more concerned with the award winners, Ricky Gervais’ presenting job and of course, the dresses. See below for a pick of red carpet hits – alongside the occasional miss… Olivia Wilde – Gucci The House star and former OC actress went for the glamour vamp look for the red carpet, noting that her Gucci gown would be sold off at auction. Proceeds will be going towards the support efforts in Haiti. Julianne Moore – Balenciaga We love Julianne Moore but this Balenciaga gown just doesn’t seem to sit right and has ended up looking a little unflattering. Still, she got to spend the night with Tom Ford as her date so she gets extra fashion credit for that one! January Jones – Lanvin It might be black but there is nothing boring about the Mad Men star’s full length Lanvin ensemble. The actress added a bit of prom night glamour with a matching satin headband and Brian Atwood platforms. Jennifer Morrison – Luis Antonio Major congratulations to Jennifer Morrison who has nabbed a boyfriend that can go out and do her clothes shopping, successfully. The House star proudly told the red carpet that she received this textured number from Puerto Rican designer, Luis Antonio for Christmas. We bet she was one of a few wearing something from their own wardrobe! Kristen Bell – Jasmine di Milo We can’t understand why Kristen Bell told the world she wore a shorter dress to the ceremony because she needed to ‘to be able to move like a tiger’ but we’ll let it pass because this Jasmine di Milo […]

Alber Elbaz illustrates for Mika

Lanvin’s artistic director, Alber Elbaz, has put his creative streak in full flow by illustrating a book for pop marvel Mika. The singer got Elbaz on board, as well as a number of other designers and artists, to illustrate the Mika book, which will be released alongside the his new EP Songs of Sorrow. Maybe Elbaz didn’t hear what the four-song EP is called , his cute, colourful and kitsch underwater drawing is anything but sad. According to WWD, other fashion figures who have contributed to Mika’s book include Paul Smith, Manish Arora and Walter Van Beirendonck. We really can’t help but be a little intrigued as to what they will have come up with. The Mika book will be on sale in Lanvin boutiques in London, Paris, Tokyo and Monaco. We can’t wait to have a peek. [Images]

Five of the best: Sequin jackets

Gone are the days when sequin jackets were only associated with bingo callers, Elvis impersonators and holiday park entertainers. Pick a good one and it really doesn’t matter if you’re wearing a comfy t-shirt and boyfriend-cut blazer is big this season and the same applies to sequin blazers. Think Miami Vice, with sparkles on. Then there are textured, vintage style jackets for that world-traveller, just-got-off-the-plane-from-Monte-Carlo-darling vibe. Just add smoky eye shadow and a pout. Choose the cut, colour and size of the sequins wisely and you could have yourself one of those wardrobe treasures that will become threadbare before you get tired of wearing it.

The ins and outs of Vintage clothing

A vintage lovely can so easily become a retro mistake. Walking into a jumble sale and decking yourself out in head to toe 80’s and 90’s does not mean you understand vintage shopping. It will not make you cool, despite what the legions of identikit 80’s Madonna tributes walking around Hoxton might like to think. Nor is dressing in head to toe fifties a guarantee that you will look like a goddess from Hollywoood’s golden age. A retro mistake is just as bad as any other fashion mistake. But good vintage fashion is here to stay for a very good reason , it offers unique clothing of the kind of quality that only top end designers provide today. Plus it tends to be a lot cheaper. So what exactly is vintage? Well it’s certainly not an item of clothing made in the last 15 years, despite what all those 80’s and 90’s revivalists might think. But it’s still a fairly broad category, covering everything under 100 years old (100 and over is officially antique and deserves a telegram from the Queen or at least very gentle treatment).

Cross Alber Elbaz at your peril

Alber Elbaz refuses to work with “b*****s”. The creative director of Lanvin finds it impossible to work with people he doesn’t get on with as they stifle his creativity. He explained: “The people I chose to run my new store in London are nice. I cannot work with b*****s, I can’t, I can’t. “Maybe I am too sensitive, I get blocked. There are some people who don’t give a damn. With me, I find that if there is no energy flowing or no connection, I can’t think. Talent is amazing – I love it, appreciate it. I respect talent a lot. But if you ask me, ‘Talent and b***h, or less talent and good?’ I’ll go with less talent.”

For everyday wear I love my Lanvin flats and Uggs. I also have a lot of handbags. Probably 50-odd.”

Summer 09 Trend: New Nudes

It’s the naked truth: Birthday suit dressing is officially in vogue. If you’re the colour-shy type and usually live in black during the winter months, this new nude trend is your refreshing spring tonic. This season’s look of sheer romanticism went hand in hand with nude tones. Subtlety was a signature look on the spring/summer ’09 runways, with a set of styles that showcased soft flesh-tone hues and pale and earthy neutrals. Feminine and delicate nude tones in honeydew, blush, sand, camel, coffee or cream are an alluring and sensuous trend this season , and all ooze sophistication. Everyone from Prada and Preen to Derek Lam and Lanvin embraced flesh-toned ensembles and second skin dresses. So, this season, give a nod to the nudes and embrace fashion’s softer side in tones of cafe au lait.

The shade of spring? Electric blue. It’s electrifying!

Armand Basi One, Gucci, Michael Kors, DKNY. All have one thing in common: their prolific use of the shade to be seen in this sprin – electric blue. Fitting in fabulously with fashion’s current obsession with all things 80’s (without being as garish as the neon shades saturating the revival), the colour adds a classic intensity to any summer ensemble and will suit all skin tones. Wear head to toe, a la Michael Kors or mix with black for striking, 80’s glam. Feel like injecting some print? Stick to animal print as seen at Lanvin.

Cathy Horyn’s Synopsis of The Men’s Shows

“The way I see it is that all the men’s designers have to prove to the consumers that they need these clothes. There must be a compelling reason, if your standards are high and your budget—well, isn’t budging. Givenchy? Not a believable vision. Galliano? Been there, Jack Sparrow. Dior Homme? Wasn’t this a cool label once? Lanvin? Seductive and romantic, the clear fashionista favorite. Number (N)ine? Crazy delightful, worth it if you have $2,500 plus to spend for one of the Flemish-colored jackets. Saint Laurent? Drab and unimaginative. Rick Owens? Original but I don’t want to know what the wearer’s hobbies are. Raf Simons? The fit is the compelling reason, nothing more, nothing less. Comme des Garcons? A good season for eclectic pieces, including the leopard pumps. Dunhill? Pointless things done to clothes, with the formality of a boutique hotel uniform.” — Cathy Horyn on On The Runway

Milan and Paris: The cream of the crop

I’m suffering from a bout of fashion week withdrawal, so I spent most of last weekend sifting through footage and images from the shows, namely Paris and Milan. Looking back, this show season has actually been a blast..fast and fun and packed with lots of action. We had Bruno crashing shows, a model fainting at McQueen, and Valentino publicly sacking Fachinetti. Surprisingly none of the top stories had a thing to do with Marc Jacobs…aside from his fascination with skirts. Anyway..with fashion week still swirling around in my head, I’ve compiled my top 5 shows from both Milan and Paris, which was hard to do considering I had many favourites! Lanvin It would have been criminal not to include Lanvin in this roundup. Alber Elbaz outdid himself. The collection was colourful, dreamy, and to quote Rachel Zoe…”I die!” Gianfranco Ferre Aquilano and Rimondi did Ferre proud with this collection. I adored the use of shape and structure. Ankle skimming trousers made a number of appearances on the runway for SS09, but the duo did it best. Balmain Mixing 80’s (strong shoulders) and the 90’s (ripped jeans) Balmain was sharp and sexy! Louis Vuitton We’ve come to expect nothing but absolute genius from Marc Jacobs. For me, this collection was much better and more relevant than last season. Prada I have to admit this wasn’t my favourite collection from Prada but it was the most interesting. Who would have thought cropped tops with rumpled skirt suits could look so good? O.K so I know this was supposed to be a top 5 post, but I had to sneak in a sixth. I couldn’t not add Alexander McQueen. His SS09 collection was fun yet erotic, primitive yet sophisticated, and simply fabulous!

Five minutes with: Dolly Jones, editor of Vogue.com

If anyone knows about the ups and downs of working in online media it’s editor of Vogue.com, Dolly Jones. Under her direction she’s literally turned the site into fashion heaven – packed with videos and podcasts to keep us occupied…oh and enough street-chic to keep us inspired too! Always on the go, Dolly took a five-minute break to talk to us about fashion week, H&M collaborations, and British fashion. You’ve worked at Vogue.com for over nine years now, what’s the biggest change you’ve witnessed in online publishing since you first started? That people want us to feature them. When I started it was quite a challenge to persuade designers and models that they wanted to be associated with a phenomenon they didn’t understand – the internet was associated with internet geeks and porn addicts and not fashionable at all. What does a normal day for you consist of? Every day is different. It’s a luxury if I get to sit at my desk and get through my emails, I receive hundreds every day. I work with a brilliant editorial team these days and I love seeing all the ideas we come up with coming to fruition, whether it’s a film on VogueTV, a gallery of the seasonal trends from A to Z or an exclusive interview in the Daily News. I work with the commercial team to try to bring exciting and innovative clients onto the site and travel to Paris and Milan to cover the fashion shows as well as liaising with the magazine team to ensure our brand is where they want it to be. It’s a constant hamster wheel of meeting all the most exciting people in fashion to ensure we are on the pulse of what’s happening within the industry, both with the established global businesses […]

Odd Pairing: The Male Athlete & Fashion

Not to say that I’m shocked (yes, I’m an ex-professional soccer player), but from the looks of the current climate in fashion, we men need to start eyeing our fellow male athletes for sartorial advice. Our idea that the habiliment of an athlete remains as clammy and scruffy as their oft-worn sweats and hoodies is far from the truth. Despite the rigours of shuttling to and fro from sweaty training sessions, match days and the like, the athletes of today still find time to step out in a fashion-forward way on and off the field of play.
