Rate or Slate: Solange Knowles in Carven vs. Brooklyn Decker in J.Mendel vs. Dianna Agron in Alice + Olivia

This week’s rate or slate brought up some head-turners, but not necessarily for all the right reason, might we add. Solange Knowles, famed for her cool style sense complete with an eccentric kick in the behind for conventional fashion, showed up at the Hennessy ‘Wild Rabbit’ Campaign Launch Event in a tribal inspired Carven SS’12 number. Brooklyn Decker has been doing the promo rounds for her latest film, Battleship, also starring Rihanna, in some rather impressive ensembles, but we’re stuck on this J.Mendel Fall 2012 lamé sleeved dress she wore to the movie’s Sydney premiere – yay or nay? Glee star Dianna Agron sported a floral Alice + Olivia Fall 2012 dress for her guest appearance on The View. Does Dianna rock hyper-floral, or is the coat strangling the plant life on her dress? It’s over to our Style Jury…. Fashion News Ed says: Brooklyn Decker: ‘Despite not being terribly fond of the gold sleeves, I love the rest ofBrooklyn’s outfit, and I’m really pleased she left her golden locks flowing for a more playful look.’ Dianna Agron: ‘When she took the coat off, Dianna looked flawless which is why she is my favourite out of the three ladies. Although the coat and the up-do make the look a bit office-y, she looked cute as a button and uber-stylish when she took it off which is what I am basing my opinion on.’ Solange Knowles: ‘I usually love Solange’s bold fashion choices, but something isn’t right here… I think the length of the dress, the pumped up cleavage and the shoes all contribute in one way or another. Sorry, Solange!’ You say: ‘Brooklyn rocks! – @LeChicUSA via Twitter ‘Brooklyn is always #1’ – @pinklipsTV via Twitter Verdict: RATE to the power of one! Brooklyn Decker in J.Mendel is this week’s clear […]

Lusting after Topshop’s Unique Pixelated Cleopatra Sweatshirt

Topshop Unique’s S/S 2012 collection might have been met with mixed reviews by the fashion press when released, but there is one lady in particular who is definitely championing the range. You might have heard of her- she’s called Rihanna! As one of MFL’s favourite singers, we were overjoyed to see Ri-Ri in the British label and have been lusting after her Cleopatra sweatshirt ever since.  The boxy jumper featuring a pixelated image of Liz Taylor as Cleopatra, perfectly channels the sportswear trend and is ideal for casual days. The collection has also caught the eye of Lindsay Lohan who wore a longer version of the top in a shoot with Terry Richardson for LOVE magazine. We would pair it now with skinny jeans or maxi skirt a la Rihanna or denim cut-offs when the weather gets warmer. Add a few pieces of chunky gold jewellery and you’ll be walking like an Egyptian in no time! Topshop Unique Pixelated Cleopatra Sweatshirt, £50, available at Topshop.

Best Dressed of the Week: Rita Ora at the NME Awards 2012

We love it when celebrities ditch the traditional dress code in favour of more quirky, up-tempo ensembles. Rita Ora: the new girl on the block who’s taking the music, fashion and star gossip charts by storm did just that at this week’s NME Awards. She looked a heavenly vision in white with an interestingly rebellious edge at the Awards, held at the Brixton Academy on Wednesday; sporting a fluid, white Hussein Chalayan spring/summer 2012 suit. The Hot Right Now singer ensured her look didn’t fall into boardroom territory by accessorising with gold jewellery and spikes. Rita opted for various gold necklaces, bracelets and rings, and finished her look with a statement Christian Louboutin ‘Marquise’ python clutch. She chose to break up the whitewash with nude peep toe B Brian Atwood ‘Bambola’ pumps. Showcasing her signature beach wave blonde curls, Rita opted for a strong scarlet nail colour offset by a nude lip and strong eyes. Rita’s edgy sense of style gives a clear indication of the direction her musical talent will take. She’ll definitely keep surprising the showbiz masses, and, we feel she bears an uncanny resemblance to our other rebel favourite: Rihanna.

Katy Perry: An emotional, post-Russell transformation

Many of us can sympathise with the excruciating emotional pain Katy Perry has endured in the past few weeks. A messy divorce; unashamedly womanising ex-husband who deems it perfectly fine to return to his waywardly amorous ways so soon after playing the ’Love’ game, and a hugely successful music career are really not the easiest to balance. But Katy has managed to project a steely persona; one that gives nothing away but beneath the surface, a storm is brewing. Her nearest and dearest have come to her rescue, encouraging her to see other men post- Russell Brand, and even Elton John dedicated a ‘singles table’ to Katy and a whole host of other love-starved stars. But who better to understand what Katy is going through than Rihanna; whom Katy is a success replica of and, Rihanna, too has tasted the sour fruits of a tumultuous, ill-fated relationship with violent ex Chris Brown. Although the best pals’ circumstances vary greatly, there is an eerie coincidence between their post break-up appearances and behaviour. After splitting from Chris Brown, Rihanna adopted a harsher, angrier and darker tone, which was evident through the music she produced. Rated R was her fourth album, and her first after her horrific ordeal; featuring tracks such as Te Amo, Hard and the deeply dark Russian Roulette. Similarly, Katy Perry revealed in her latest interview with Interview magazine ‘my music is about to get real f****** dark, so . . .’ which hints towards following in the footsteps of best celeb friend, RiRi. Photographed for Interview in a sexy studded, sequinned bra, long, black gloves and chandelier earrings, and surrounded by a host of burlesque dancers in very little; Katy is unrecognisable in this new, smokier guise. Her outfits, although already eccentric, are turning raunchier and slightly more rebellious, […]

Monday Musings: The things rattling our fashion brains on the hardest day of the week

This early fashion week morning at My Fashion Life HQ, Starbucks and fashion week invite holder in tow – before we dash out to today’s shows – we’re mulling over…. Doing it Lana style – Mulberry’s ‘Del Rey’ Bag A handbag named in your honour is today’s trademark of ultimate fame. You’ve bagged it (pardon the pun) if Emma Hill wants to name one of her world famous creations after you, and Lana, you’re just that. Needless to say, Alexa may be feeling a slight budge off her Mulberry throne, as the ‘Del Rey’ is the first celeb-dedicated bag post-Alexa Satchel. The ever loyal Lana sat front row at the brand’s autumn winter 2012 show, namesake bag in tow. Let’s see where this Mulberry collaboration takes Ms. Del Rey…. Brits Style The Brits are being held tomorrow and are even more exciting because it is during Fashion Week! Rihanna’s impromptu appearance at Stella McCartney’s autumn winter show gave us a taste of things to come, and we hope it isn’t just the outfit choices that surprise us at this year’s Brits. Tipped to win big is mega-voiced, bouffant-wielding, Adele and scruffy singing sensation Ed Sheeran. But being fashion people, it’s the outfits we’re really concerned with, and we can’t wait to see what Jessie J puts together this time! Remainder of London Fashion Week We can’t believe day 4 of London Fashion Week is upon us, and feel as though today all the MAJOR shows are happening all at once! The designers at the forefront ofLondon’s unique fashion aesthetic – Erdem, Christopher Kane, Peter Pilotto and Michael Van Der Ham – are taking centre stage today, and, although we’re still spellbound from their spring summer 2012 shows, we can’t wait for next season! A concoction ofLondon’s eclectic talent all in […]

Five fab snakeskin pieces under £50

Here at MFL, we love all types of animal print; leopard, zebra, tiger, crocodile. You name it, we’ve pretty much tried it. But there is one print that we have special style affection for- snakeskin. There is something really cool and effortless about snakeskin that other prints just can’t touch. Leopard print might look glam on certain occasions but, worn the wrong way and you might just verge into Bet Lynch territory (shudder). Snakeskin on the other hand, is more subtle, more refined and more blasé. We love! Thankfully it is super-hot right now and investing in a piece will see you right through summer. Here are our top five picks which are all, miraculously, under £50. 1.If you haven’t ventured into the style mecca that is Stylist Pick, you need to now. This clutch and purse set is modern, fashion forward and panelled with just the right amount of snakeskin. Cindy Multi Clutch and Purse Set, £39.95, available at Stylist Pick 2. What could be more chic than this gorgeous little leather snakeskin flap over wallet from Reiss. We love the simplistic design and luxe feel. Oh and did we mention it’s in the sale? Reiss Mario Square Flap Over Wallet, £69 £34, available at Reiss 3.Everyone from Rihanna to Alexa are huge fans of hi-tops and these snakeskin ones from Stylist Pick tick all the right boxes. Wear with rolled up jeans and a loose knit sweater now and with shorts and a vest when summer, eventually, arrives. Elva Snake Print Hi-tops, £39.95, available at Stylist Pick 4.You’ll have the moves like Jagger in these MOTO supersoft skinny jeans. Sexy, rock ‘n’ roll and oh so cool. Five minutes with Lady Gaga’s fave shoe designer, Lungta de Fancy

Despite Lungta De Fancy designer Mai Marimoto being on her way to celebrating the 10th anniversary of the brand, penning a book and branching out into lingerie in the next coming months, the Central Saint Martins graduate remains a humble and fuss-free designer with a true passion and talent for her work – and a desire to please every one of her shoppers. And, since we mention it, those shoppers happen to include some of fashion’s most famous faces from Lady Gaga to Victoria Beckham and Rihanna (and even a royal, too). The appeal, it seems, is her ability to meet every girl’s needs. You can find Lungta De Fancy in London’s New Bond Street, Knightsbridge and St Christopher’s Place, which is where we caught up with the designer last week as part of the fabulous Thank You Thursdays shopping event. Find out what Mai Marimoto told us about her inspirations, her plans for the label, and those Lady Gaga shoes…   How do you manage to balance getting the maximum out of your creativity and keeping the prices down to (relatively) affordable prices? I understand that every customer is special so I wouldn’t mind if someone came up to me and said ‘I love this’, but it needs to be a bit different here so each item can be individual if that’s how a lady wants it. Every lady is something special and everyone has different figures. For three of our stores we do free alterations so we like to make sure it fits the client perfectly before their special event. Like this client that’s come in today – she thinks the dress is a little too long so we are fixing it to how she likes for no extra cost. London isn’t the only place you have a […]

The fetish trend: was it really so good being bad?

“It’s so good being bad,” said Rihanna in her mega hit S&M, and rightly so. They’re the lyrics some fashion designers swore by when translating their inspirations for AW11 onto the catwalk. Fashion’s eyes feasted on this season’s celebrated fetish trend: a voyeuristic welcoming of PVC and rubberised separates punctuated with seductive frills and sheer inserts. It was definitely as case of good girl gone bad and, quite honestly, I’m still unsure about it. Wondering outside of the realms of the secretive bedroom in dominatrix-inspired apparel is a frightening concept. Yes, the underwear-as-outerwear trend of seasons past has become something of normality; I still can’t help but feel squeamish at the debauched thoughts of the man in the grey coat on the number 42 bus who could most possibly be undressing my peek-a-boo lace Marc Jacobs creation with his eyes. But the question that most troubled me when I sat down, Starbucks-ready, and dissected every autumn catwalk look was this: what made it ok this season to turn all unchaste and bedroom un-coy? Where had the shocking brights and multiple doses of SS11 minimalism gone? And most importantly: what purpose was an affinity for fetish going to serve? After all, wouldn’t it be a bit insensitive to stroll though Hyde Park, whip and night porter cap in tow? But then again, fashion hasn’t really served a purpose other than making the ostentatious acceptable and allowing fashion virgins to ‘come out of the closet’ (pun intended). Naturally, I turned to the worshipped domain of celebrity to seek answers – Gaga being the obvious choice, but Rihanna more so. They are, sadly, the current yardsticks of survival; whatever of theirs we can emulate on our meager earnings, we do, and in my eyes, no one has probably been more responsible and made […]

First Look: Lavazza’s 20th anniversary 2012 calendar

The Lavazza calendar turns 20 next year, and to celebrate its big birthday, the 2012 edition has taken quite a special turn. Meet The Lavazzers – that is, the people who have made the calendar so successful for the past two decades. For the 20th anniversary calendar, Lavazza’s invited 12 of its most iconic contributors of the past 20 years back to create self-portraits that represent their relationship with the coffee company. And how the cameras have turned. The likes of Elliot Erwit, Ellen Von Unwerth, Annie Leibovitz, Mark Seliger, Miles Aldridge and David LaChapelle have all taken images for the 2012 edition that, whether through humour or vanity, express their one-of-a-kind vision. From Erwit’s comical paper bag head to Leibovitz’s simple self-portrait and Finlay MacKay’s digitally-enhanced human dog, the results are varied to say the least, but they each share a surreal quality and a sweet story of Lavazza’s journey to legendary status. And fronting it all? 20-year-old (sense a theme?) Dutch model Valerie van der Graaf, who was shot by Ellen Von Unwerth blowing out birthday candles on the cover. It’s her biggest scoop to date, but with her buxom curves and big blonde hair, we’ll tell you now it won’t be long before you see this girl everywhere. Flick through our gallery below to see the 20th anniversary calendar images, and stay tuned for all the goss from launch party… [nggallery id=104]

British fashion reigns at the Met Ball

For an event that usually champions the best of American fashion, last night’s Met Ball saw a surprising amount of stars wearing gowns from British designers. Perhaps it was a nod towards last night’s honouree, the late Alexander McQueen, who’s life and work was celebrated in an accompanying exhibition, Savage Beauty, or maybe the world hasn’t quite recovered from royal wedding fever just yet – but either way, the Brits ruled the red carpet. Dressing the most celebs was Stella McCartney – also clad in her own label – who decked out an impressive 14 stars in her dresses (save a jumpsuit for Iman), including Rihanna, Naomi Watts, Eva Mendes, Maggie Gyllenhaal and BFFs Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, Thandie Newton and Madonna. Also high up on the most-spotted list was, unsurprisingly, Alexander McQueen. Sarah Burton wore a white dress by her own design to honour her friend and mentor, while Daphne Guinness, Naomi Campbell, Gisele, Coco Rocha, Anna Dello Russo, Karen Elson, Racquel Zimmerman and Salma Hayek and Sarah Jessica Parker all paid tribute to the designer. And the list of Brits doesn’t stop there – Erdem dressed Lily Donaldson in a floor-length navy lace gown, Burberry bagged Rosie Huntington-Whiteley to wear a satin rose gown and nude python clutch, and Alexa Chung wore new-season Christopher Kane. Stay tuned for our round-up of the best and worst dressed from last night’s Met Ball.

Blake Lively’s become a redhead!

The gorgeous Blake Lively is known as much for flowing tresses as she is her impeccable sense of style, so we were a little surprised this morning to see that she’s dyed those beach blonde waves red. Red! Appearing at the Times magazine 100 Most Influential People party last night, she debuted her brand new ‘do on the red carpet with a mane to match, showcasing inches of full, bouncy, auburn waves.  Red locks are quite the rage at the moment, it appears, having been spotted on the heads of Rihanna and Cheryl Cole, so was it just a matter of time before Blake embraced the look? Unlikely. Apparently her new hair is for a film role as Glinda the Good Witch in the upcoming Oz: The Great and the Powerful movie, which would explain those rumours a while back, too (though teamed with her turquoise Zuhair Murad gown and towering Louboutins, she’d be equally suited for the role of Ariel, we reckon). Film roles aside, we’re unsure whether this racy colour suits Blake. It’s a bit too dramatic for her relaxed style and makes her look old beyond her years. Fingers crossed she’ll swap back to blonde after the film. Whatever will Karl say? What do you think about Blake’s new hair? Would you ever dye your hair a dramatic colour? As always, your thoughts below, please…

Who will replace Christophe Decarnin at Balmain?

This season is going to be remembered not for trends or style icons, but as the season of the great creative reshuffle. First Galliano was fired from Dior under the shadow of scandal, spelling rumours of a major swap-around in the luxury French fashion houses, and just yesterday it was announced that another of the greats has jumped ship as Christophe Decarnin parted ways with Balmain. The French designer, who joined the label in 2005, is widely credited as the strength behind Balmain, lifting both prices and designs to new heights, and inspiring Balmania among celebs and the fashion world with his fierce designs. Although his departure hasn’t attracted the same sense of shock as Galliano’s, rumours are rife as to what has prompted the split. Most sources suggest the designer’s recent absence from his AW11 show, blamed on exhaustion, was actually masking a deeper emotional health crisis. But it’s also possible that his leaving has a lot to do with creative differences between Decarnin and Balmain CEO Alain Hivelin (how many ripped tees and power leather can one really wear?), or that the designer’s enthusiasm was lost after unofficial Balmain ambassador and supportive friend Emmanuelle Alt left the brand to take the helm at Vogue Paris. Either way, there’s opening at Balmain for one of the biggest feats in fashion, and the question on everyone’s lips is who’s going to get it. We’ve highlighted the favourite front-runners for the job (and yes, the same names rumoured for Dior are cropping up here, too) – see below for the candidates tipped for the post. 1. Melanie Ward Who: Balmain’s stylist Why: Fashionista tips Ward as the most likely replacement. Following Emmanuelle Alt’s departure, über-stylist Ward stepped in to cover styling duties at Balmain, and was credited, albeit unofficially, with having […]

Celebs love Christian Louboutin’s Lucifer heels (and so do we)

With their cigarette-thin heels and bright red soles, Christian Louboutin’s statement shoes are the go-to footwear for celebrities, regardless of where they’re headed. And it seems this pair of killer courts – cleverly named Lucifer after their devilish wicked streak – are no different. Spotted on Elle Macpherson on the school run (seriously, how does she look that glamourous first thing in the morning?), Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez, Louboutin’s Lucifer Bow heels are only for the fearless – but boy are they worth the wobble. The decorative double bow at the toe mixed with deadly sharp studs and spike heels make these pumps a fierce combination of pretty and punky, meaning they’ll work with pretty much any outfit (a la Elle’s skinnies or Kim’s mini). We’re totally sold on them – as with all Louboutin’s, they turn any outfit into a show-stopper. See how the celebs are wearing theirs below… [nggallery id=8] Christian Louboutin Lucifer Spike Bow Pump, $995 (£650), available at Bergdorf Goodman. BUY NOW!

Round the table with Henry Holland and Gemma Cairney

As you well know, here at MFL we’re rather partial to a fashion TV series or two, and none more so than Frock Me with TK Maxx, back on TV screens in the UK for a second series to brighten up the bleakest Sunday mornings. Hosted by super-style icon Alexa Chung, London designer Henry Holland and Radio 1 style expert Gemma Cairney, Frock Me follows fashion through its rampant relationship with music as it highlights top trends for the season, chats to the very best in the business, gives DIY styling tips, and shows you how people on the street are working – and styling – the season’s best trends… in a nutshell. Naturally, we were obliged to catch up with Henry and Gemma when TK Maxx invited us to London’s Zetter hotel last week where, alongside a few other bloggers, we quizzed the pair on all things Frock Me and fashion. We’ve seen three shows so far, can you tell us what we can expect from the rest of the series? HH: There’s a show about romance, there’s a show about Americana, there’s a show about festivals; so there’s those theme-shows, and you can expect to see Sophie Ellis-Bextor, you can expect to see Gabriella Cilmi, we’ve had the Future Heads, Marina and the Diamonds, Paloma Faith – she was good, and everyone did live too. And then there’s some very ridiculous sketches… GC: We’ve got prints in Bristol [just aired] which was fun, I actually put a couple up against each other for the Frock Off, and the girl really looks like Alexa so that was good. And then we’ve got in Birmingham Americana – we ended up with about 200 people surrounding us in the middle of town for the final section, so we were kind of […]

Celeb Beauty Statements: A look at celeb beauty and hair trends this month

With London Fashion Week over and early morning frost turning to damp dew, it can only mean one thing! Summer is on its way and that means celebs are out in full force on red carpets across the globe, ready to show us how to paint our faces this season! So, let’s kick this party off with Jessica Biel. Her absence of heavy make up is spot on trend , following in the steps of Bobbi Brown. With only concealer, blusher for definition and lipstick for sex appeal she shows us all how to work a pretty smile and a cute pair of earrings! Add natural waves and she’s working two trends at once! Next comes Leona Lewis at the Brits. Whilst her silver futuristic dress and studded cuffs might be a little much for dress down Fridays, her silver nails show us all how we can tap into this trend. Other fans of silver nails include trend setting Rihanna! Speaking of Riri, only a true fashionist like her can show us the way to this next trend. Big hair a la Jedward. It’s the real way to avoid washing your hair, simply pile on the hair spray and backcomb! Although I’m sure she wasn’t thinking of a way to avoid a hair wash when getting ready for the Grammys!!! Spring was in full bloom on the face of Sarah Harding at the Capital Awards in London. Ticking two big trends with one move, her orange lipstick shows us how to do bold lips and reminds us to leave the liquid liner at home!

Lusting after: The Roady by Yves Saint Laurent

The latest bag from Yves Saint Laurent for Autumn/Winter ’09/10 has been unveiled , it’s the Roady, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. Already a huge hit with the fashion elite, Selma Blair, Rachel Bilson, Mary-Kate Olsen, Kylie and Rihanna have all been glimpsed gracing this glorious tote, and I must say, I’m pretty jealous. “Less is more” is an age old cliche, but the design gurus at YSL must have had this moto in mind when they created this master-piece. The Roady, made from beautiful butter-soft leather, features a small leather hook strap , perfect sitting snug under the arm or casually slung on the forearm, and offers space galore for all those handbag essentials. YSL offer the tote in red or black, but the black ruched Roady à la Mary-Kate and Kylie is my absolute favourite. Simple, subtle, relaxed sophistication at its best. The Roady retails at £735 for the patent leather, and is available at the Yves Saint Laurent store, 32-33 Old Bond Street, London SW1 (020 7493 1800).
