The Edge of Style!

As ubiquitous as the images from “The Edge of Love” (the upcoming film about poet Dylan Thomas starring Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller) have become, I can’t help but love them so. I remain utterly seduced by the rugged 40s flowers that the girls appear to be, despite the slight bitterness that the film has turned what is essentially my day to day look of choice (floral dresses, woolly cardigans and a smudge of lipstick) into a fashion cliche.

Menswear Looks - From The Men’s Department

ysl_280508.jpgFor hot summer style, try subtly inspired menswear looks: pair light, airy sundresses with a cropped tuxedo jacket, or loose pinstripe trousers with a chiffon blouse with ultra-feminine detailing.

As guys are cut differently than most of us gals,it’s unfortunately not so easy to raid your boyfriend’s closet (though, this shouldn’t necessarily be discounted as an option). However there are quite a few places where we can skip the ladies department and go straight to the men’s section.

The Nautical Look: Trend or Staple?

Every year at around this time I see four or five articles exclaiming over the nautical trend of this summer. It’s hard not to think beachy, oceanic thoughts when the weather is warm and sunny out and the summer holidays are fast approaching … but I repeat, I see this every year—so at what point does a trend became a wardrobe staple that simply goes into hibernation for a few months out of the year?

Loafing Around: The Return Of The Loafer

alexachungloafers_220508.jpgWhenever there is a stampede of vertiginous footwear like those of the current skyscraper climate, you can be sure there is a thoroughly horizontal backlash just around the corner.

Not that I am advocating an utter abandonment of all things heeled (I’m a heels girl through and through) it’s just that there are some occasions for which my 5 inch wedges and aching feet just will not do. And for those times, I must admit I’m a little bored with what is on offer.

Despite claims that the “ballet pump is back” (did they ever go away?), or ever-amorous support for the brogue (which I do love but they have become oh-so-ubiquitous), I am turning to an old classic for my foot salvation. Yes, that’s right, the loafer is the only shoe that will do.

Is it just me or does the original Russell and Bromley “Chester” shoe, complete with tassels that look like they were made with a History teacher in mind, suddenly look just right?

Tartan shirts were a big trend during A/W ’07 and have appeared yet again on the A/W ’08 catwalks. I know it’s a bit early to start getting excited about winter fashion, but I do so love tartan. The question is, how will you wear it?

Visible bra straps? Frowned upon, yes, but grossly overlooked, I say. As with so many fashion “rules”, there is so much more fun to be had when “don’ts” are entirely disregarded.

As the dawn of summer festivals prepares to rise , my yearning to be swaying in a sunlit meadow whilst a girl sings onstage with a strumming guitar and a paper owl is growing rapidly.

Spring Style: Top Knots

Unable to take the plunge and actually chop my hair, I have found a less permanent way to have a spring fling with my ‘do. When you are known for your scruffy ‘bird’s nest’ locks like I am, it is amazing the difference it makes when you scrape your hair off your face into a neat top knot.

Scattered all over the S/S runways from Lanvin to Rodarte, it is a severe look which contrasts beautifully with all that femininity and flowers for Spring.
