Chic Shoegasms: Moschino Cheap & Chic suede open toe sandal

With their delicate swirling straps and golden rib-cage, these Moschino Cheap & Chic suede open toe sandals make me think of old-school glamour which, in turn, makes me think of next season’s scintillating jewel tones that these beauties would be perfectly adept at highlighting. The emerald, amethyst, garnet, ruby, sapphire and citrine shades were born to rock our catwalks, and as a result, our high street for AW11. And delicate stilettos such as these are the perfect accessory for teaming with that glamorous floor-length gown. If colour is important for next season, gold (with her similarly glam siblings: silver and bronze) will effortlessly complement deep luxurious jewel tones. Structurally, the shape of this shoe will show your feet off with subtle sexiness, plus they’re the ultimate platform for revealing your latest manicure. With the strap detailing at the front of the foot, the long v-shaped upper straps help to elongate your legs and draw the eye up towards whatever suitably fab outfit you happen to pair them with – be it that fitted midi skirt, maxi skirt with the thigh-high slit or those cropped trousers. But whilst that’s all said and done, and I can see the appeal of these shoes, especially with their old-style allure, they aren’t at the top of my wish-list this season. If I’m ever in the market for a pair of delicate strappy shoes, Gucci’s Kelis stiletto still maintains the top spot for me, even if they are last season. Moschino Cheap & Chic Suede Open Toe Sandal, £421, available at my-wardrobe.com.

AW11 Trend Recap: Forties & Sixties

This season was much about the revival of bygone decades. Filled with opulent Forties glamour and a deliberate nod to Sixties Mod culture, autumn/winter 2011 beautifully segued between the two style-cementing eras. Forties Forties glamour couldn’t have been personified better than the exaggerated shoulders, mid-length dresses, belted blouses and knee length pencil skirt pairings sent down the catwalk at Miu Miu, Clements Ribeiro and Donna Karan. Frida Giannini at Gucci sampled essential Forties accessories, adding Fedoras, fur capes and pussy bow blouses to the mix. Furs, pearls, ladylike handbags, elbow- length gloves and slim-belted waists added drama to the fully dressed yet subtly sexy Forties appeal. Sixties   A skilful nod to  Mod culture and musing over Jean Shrimpton’s style spirit, autumn/winter 2011 fell in love with the decade of fashion revolt. Miniskirts, polo necks, sloping shoulders and drop waists ruled the catwalk, as seen at Celine and Calvin Klein. Another spin on the Sixties – the two piece – featuring structured fabrics such as felt and wool played out in a tunic and trouser combo at Alberta Ferretti and Ermano Scervino. Prada worked with graphic check prints whilst DKNY and Jil Sander paid tribute in original monochrome. No Sixties look is complete without the imperative beehive, and no one did it better than Jean Paul Gaultier

Cannes 2011: Best Dressed (pt 1)

One of the most prestigious film – and fashion – events of the year has begun. Yes, after kicking off on Wednesday, the exclusive Cannes Film Festival is well under way, and so is the red carpet action that always incurs at the lavish two-week ceremony. Our favourite occasion in the calendar – the dresses are more daring, the glamour’s knocked up a notch and the risque rises with the utmost chic – the A list have been presenting the very best of red carpet couture in their masses. And with two days of serious sartorial success under its belt already, our selection for the first part of our best dressed list has been particularly hard, but not for lack of gorgeousness. From Rachel McAdams’ many hits to Uma Thurman in Versace, see below for our favourite picks from Cannes so far… Rachel McAdams Rachel McAdams hit the red carpet with her man Michael Sheen to promote their new film Midnight in Paris looking every inch the Hollywood star.  The Mean Girls actress wore a breathtakingly beautiful sheer gown with embroidered red lace by Marchesa. Together with her gold Casadei courts and voluminus curly hair she looked the epitome of old school Hollywood glamour.   Uma Thurman Attending the Midnight in Paris premiere Uma Thurman pulled out all the stops. Looking stunning in an an angelic custom-made white Versace gown, complete with a feathered train, Uma totally show the show on the red carpet. Even the actress herself knew how great she looked – when photographers complimented her dress, she said, “It’s sexy isn’t it?”   Angelina Jolie Angelina is a rare sighting on the red carpet these days but her appearance at Cannes yesterday to promote her new film Kung Fu Panda 2 showed she hasn’t lost he touch when it comes to ultra elegant dressing. The queen of simplicity, she looked understated […]

Met Ball 2011: worst dressed

The annual Met Costume Institute Gala in New York always attracts the fashionable and fabulous. You’ve already seen our best dressed from last night’s red carpet, but unfortunately, not everyone got it right.  We understand, of course. We get het up about which dress to wear to work each day, let alone what designer gown to don to one of the most prestigious fashion events of the year. Add to that the hefty celebrity competition and hundreds of photographers capturing your every angle… well, you can see why the pressure is too much for some. Here’s our pick of celebs that missed the mark at the Met last night… Stella McCartney Whilst her buddy Madonna rocked one of Stella’s dresses and looked the best she has in years, the designer herself didn’t get it quite right. We love unusual sillohuettes and shapes but Stella’s own design was a bit too quirky for our liking. We love that hairpiece, though.   Jennifer Lopez The Latina lovely is usually a show-stopper on the red carpet, but whilst we love the shape and drapes of her Gucci gown, we felt it was ruined by the flower-embellished sleeves, overcomplicating a beautiful dress. Mary Kate Olsen Famed for her hobo chic, we didn’t exactly expect to see Mary Kate in bodycon sequins but this Givency Haute Couture dress was informal and unflattering. We’d like to see her sexy style circa 2006 return – she’s only 24, after all. Naomi Campbell One word (well, two) – over dramatic, just like the lady herself. It always surprises us when supermodels manage to make themselves look less than perfect but Naomi Campbell managed to look unflattering, haphazard and downright bizarre in her Alexander McQueen gown.

Beyonce’s busting out the designer labels in Paris

If you didn’t know Paris was the style capital of the world, you could have made a darn good guess after Beyonce’s visit last week. On a brief break in the City of Light with hubby Jay-Z, the couple made more than their fair share of rare public appearances doing regular things like eating and shopping, but they mixed it with some irregular stuff that only the rich can do like wear a different designer outfit every day from collections that aren’t even available yet and pose for upcoming issues of fashion glossies (she’s wearing Gucci for Harper’s Bazaar above, FYI). Good old Bey, when she’s back, she sure as hell lets you know it. See below for five of the fab outfits she showcased on her trip, and tell us which is your favourite look in the poll below. Isabel Marant AW10 We already raved about Beyonce’s printed silk dress from Isabel Marant’s AW10 collection, which she expertly paired with McQueen fishbone platforms and a black crocodile Balmain bag, but it’s well worth a second mention here. Roland Mouret Next outing, next outfit, this time a black dungaree romper by Roland Mouret teamed with artfully messy hair and a pair of strappy platforms for a chic stroll along the streets. Marc Jacobs AW11 Taking a decidedly lady-like direction, Bey opted for a green and red polka dot dress from Marc Jacobs’ AW11 collection to celebrate Easter, this time swapping statement footwear for a pair of classic Louboutin pumps and her trusty Balmain bag. Isabel Marant AW11 Another look from Isabel Marant, this time a dusty pink leather jacket from the French label’s AW11 collection that she teamed with casual cargo shorts and those Daffodil Louboutins for a sleek everyday look (save the 6.5 inch heels). Balmain Probably our least […]

There’s something from every decade at Warehouse next season

A fan of the Fifties? A sucker for the Sixties? Swooning for the Seventies? You can see where we’e going with this – Warehouse has something from every decade next season (well, we counted at least three). If you’re into androgyny, there’s a whole host of masculine tailored pieces to pick from, including Teddy Boy-style trousers, classic button-up shirts and the loveliest grey overcoat with leather edging that’s top of our wish list. If you want something more girlie, try Sherbet, Warehouse’s candy pink Fifties collection, or Modern Deco, a glitzy glamorous assortment of sparkles. Our faves? Portrait of a Woman – classic tailoring with clean lines and a sleek finish; Heritage – country-inspired herringbones and textured tweeds; and Magazine – a Seventies-inspired collection of bright prints and feminine shapes. Look out for the bright fantasy fur stoles (pictured above) – everyone will be clambering for them come autumn (and yes, they’re a dead ringer for Gucci‘s). Flick through our gallery for more highlights from Warehouse this autumn… [nggallery id=18]

Steep vs Cheap: Silk Blouse

Channel two of spring’s hottest trends in one by investing in a brightly hued blouse. Voluminous silhouettes dominated spring summer catwalks, and dazzling pigments are definitely here to stay. And if carrying bold colours fearlessly is what this season is all about, make sure you invest in a piece that really makes a striking statement. Enter Gucci. The luxury label’s stunning silk Georgette blouse offers a splash of vibrant orange, and the gold button detailing and pussybow tie lend perfectly to this season’s Seventies glam. We want to wear ours tucked into cream wide-legged trousers to balance out the full-bodied pop of colour, and finish off with leather wedges for sweet statement style. But coming with a near-couture price tag of £595, it’ll take you to be as bold with the cash as you are with colour to work it this season. But don’t worry, we’ve got a cheaper luxe substitute to this season’s essential piece. Diane Von Furstenberg offers the perfect alternative to Gucci’s pricier version. In a similar hue of vivid orange, the DVF Louche blouse features a loose fit and bears blouson sleeves and a pussybow tie to boot – all at under half the cost of Gucci’s version. The key to rocking it? Pair intense shades with muted tones to ensure your look isn’t too overpowering, and balance the oversized silhouette with a fitted pencil skirt and pared-down pumps for pure lady-like allure. Which will you go for? Gucci Silk georgette pussy bow blouse, £565, available at Net-a-Porter. BUY NOW! Diane Von Furstenberg Bairly louche blouse, £200, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

Deal of the day: Carvela Azalia heels

One of the biggest trends for SS11 is colour blocking, and even if you’re not feeling particularly brave, you can still work the look this season. We’re already big fans of this trend, as seen at Gucci and YSL, and so we were super excited to find Carvela’s Azalia heels, which are just right for colour blocking fans, both bold and bashful. In bright patent tangerine, these heels can be worn as a single statement piece or as part of an all-out colour blocking ensemble. We love the tonal multi-coloured layers which form the platform – these alone offer enough subtle statement to make a striking style With a stylish and comfy slingback, we recommend pairing these heels with a crisp white dress for days in the sun, or with rainbow brights if you’re colour blocking head to toe. Don’t worry about trying to match your shades – the brighter the better with this vibrant trend. Carvela Azalia orange heels, £130, available at Kurt Geiger. BUY NOW!

Kids’ Choice Awards 2011: Best Dressed

Every year the celebs turn out in full force to celebrate the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles, and whilst it might not be the Oscars, it doesn’t stop the attendees upping the fashion stakes in fantastic form. With such a young and cool atmosphere, heavy long gowns and Chopard jewels were out in favour of fresh, youthful looks at this year’s 24th awards, all set for the spring season ahead. We’ve scoured the orange carpet for pictures of our favourite fashionistas from the weekend’s ceremony, so without further ado, here are the emerging style setters that stole the show at the 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards. Welcome to our top 10 best dressed list… Selena Gomez Selena was a real winner on the night in this outfit. Her Christian Cota shorts and top combo looked fantastic paired with her electric blue Camilla Skovgaard strappy sandals. Fresh, young and the best dressed on the night. Miley Cyrus Miley looked fresh and summery in her colourful strapless dress by Dolce and Gabbana. She can sometimes dress too old for her age on the red carpet, but this look is perfectly appropriate. Pixie Lott Pixie looks cute and playful is this adorable Miu Miu dress. The heart print and quirky collar give her an edge over many of the other looks seen on the night. Black strappy shoes and a long black shoulder bag complete her look. Kim Kardashian Kim showed off her killer curves in this Azzedine Alaia white ruffled dress. The colour looks great against her skin tone and she accessorized well with a beautiful Adriana Castro python clutch. This is definitely one of the most carefree looks we’ve seen from Kim in a while. Heidi Klum Heidi looked effortlessly chic in this fantastically-embellished Gucci mini dress. The spiky detailing gives a […]

Deal of the day: YSL La Laque nailvarnish

It might be April Fool’s day (at least it was until about an hour ago), but today’s deal of the day is no joke. While we all love a new dress, sometimes accessories shout loudest, and this bright red nail varnish from Yves Saint Laurent is definitely calling out to us. Gucci’s spring/summer 2011 show saw models with popping pillar box nails from make up supremo Pat McGrath, and if you want a burst of designer bright, you can echo this look with YSL’s colourful collection. We love YSL’s La Laque for its chip-free varnishes which really go the distance, and we’re feeling inspired to channel a lazy afternoon in London referencing all its iconic reds – this hot spring shade should be worn now for an especially bright summer time lift. The secret to making this scarlet shade work? Keep nails short and shapely – it’ll transform your talons from trashy to high fashion. Yves Saint Laurent La Laque nail lacquer, £16.50 £14.85, available at House of Fraser. BUY NOW!

AW11 trend report

We haven’t even started wearing our spring strings yet and already everyone’s talking about autumn – we don’t blame them, though, good things are coming to a closet near you next season. If you want to stay ahead of the frolic (and let’s face it, it’s no fun coming last), we’ve rounded up the hottest trends from the autumn/winter 2011 runways that you won’t want to miss. Stay psyched, we’ll be wearing them sooner than we’d like to admit… Spots Marc Jacobs, David Koma, Stella McCartney Go dotty, literally, for spots and circles next autumn as anything round rules the runway – perennial polkas and Dalmatian drops included. Marc Jacobs layered spotted separates and accessories, David Koma couldn’t resist adding pom poms and Stella McCartney’s laser-cut circles became infectious. Colour Jaeger, Roksanda Ilincic, Jonathan Saunders Good news if you’re a partial to a colour pop, the autumn runways picked up where spring stopped and sent a riot of colour to rival a rainbow. Reds add a contemporary edge to classic camels while vivid primary pops break up black and brighten warm autumnal shades. Monochrome Julien Macdonald, Giles, Louis Vuitton Not braving the bold? Try black and white, instead. When colour wasn’t clattering the catwalk, monochrome was making just as much of an impact, especially at Julien Macdonald where signature jewel shades were swapped for gothic blacks and at Giles and Louis Vuitton where bondage-style straps took the darkside to the depths of dominatrix. Texture Marni, Aquascutum, Fendi If you’re partial to sequins, suede and fur, here’s your chance to wear it all at once. Texture is all or nothing next season and more, as they say, is more. Sumptuous silks, soft fur, lace and leather team together for a luxe look, tweeds and knits offer a smattering of the countryside, […]

From simple to statement and daring to dramatic, here’s our top 10 pick of the best dressed celebs on last night’s red rug. Get your green eyed monster at the ready. Cate Blanchett Cate Blanchett pushed the proverbial boat out in this blush beaded floor length Givenchy Couture gown from the label’s spring 2011 collection. The minimalist form-fitting shape and futuristic metallic design made way for an absolute red carpet winner. Michelle Williams Michelle Williams dazzled on last night’s red carpet in a beautifully beaded white Chanel Couture gown. Milan Fashion Week AW11: Prada and Emporio Armani

Friday’s collection of catwalk delights began with Prada and it’s latest offerings for autumn/winter 2011 at Milan Fashion Week. Miuccia Prada is renowned for wowing audiences with her unexpected, and somewhat surprising, take on fashion, and this season was no exception. With the Sixties princess coat maintaining a key focal point behind the collection, thick cashmere A-line versions could be seen at the beginning of the show, filtering through into pastel coloured plastic creations complete with circular disk detailing and fur collared necklines. Square toed Mary Janes could also be seen in snakeskin or suede, alongside fur aviator skull caps, shaggy sheep’s wool panelling, gym slip dresses, and green snakeskin belts. But the biggest hit of them all, and soon to be Prada’s biggest dresses of the season, were the translucent numbers. Complete with flesh pink and powder blue hues, the stiffened dresses and shirts were a button-embellished scale-like cyber dream. Emporio Armani‘s AW11 collection, on the other hand, took the brands signature colour to the extreme – pretty much all looks were black – with the occasional peacock blue fur shawl or handbag thrown in for good measure. Leather caps wrapped in black headscarves and dark glasses made way for a strong aviator theme, while fitted black jackets and tapered silk trousers went back to the tight-fitted tailored look Armani loves. Asymmetric tunic dresses and woolly black ponchos broke up the slim-line silhouettes, helping the fashion house break away from its style signatures, resulting in an ultra chic noir-tastic collection for autumn. Men’s Fashion Week Round up, Milan: Days 3 and 4

With Paris Men’s fashion week now in full swing we finish our round up of Milan Men’s fashion week from the 21st and 22nd of June. Ermenegildo Zegna The cravat was key at Zegna, in shades of burnt ombre, rich khaki and royal blue, it was worn just often with the more casual shirting as well as with the traditional suiting. Suits came in shades of peach and marl grey and was worn with tailored shorts and brogues, or worn with open necked shirts that were finished with a cravat. More casual looks had a slightly urban influence with parka style lightweight jackets in rich orange, worn over a striped jersey and paired with bright whites and sandals. But the Riviera influence was never far off with models donning sunglasses and wearing straw hats atop their head or held loosely at the side, as well as checked blazers that gave a contemporary nod towards the classic look. Gucci The look was chic and sleek at Gucci with classic slim fit suiting in luxurious suede and stand-out tailored leather jackets. Like many of the shows blue was a key colour, here coming in smart dark denims, midnight blues and cornflower blue shades and mixed with rich suede browns and rusty orange. Head-to-toe and denim was seen in the form of a safari style suit as well as with the more traditional double breasted suiting done in a denim-look fabric. Knitwear was made for Spring, done light and white in colour and oversized in style, the chunky-knit funnel necked jumpers were worn with super slim trousers in the same shade for ultimate contrast in proportion. Etro Verdant pastures at the Etro show laid the way for a refreshingly light-hearted collection that showed intricate print and embroidery alongside bursts of zesty colour. Tailoring […]

Get The Look: Claire Danes @ The Met Ball 2010

Sweet and serene Claire Danes let her hair down for this year’s Met ball, leaving her girl-next door image behind and taking on a new sexy siren look. The reason for this transformation? Revlon’s Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman.  Here’s how he create her edgy look: Line the top and bottom of your lids with a black liquid liner Apply a grey eyeshadow to the lids for smokey eyes – try Revlon Colourstay 12 hour eye shadow in Sultry smoke Add drama to your eyes, by rimming both the top an bottom lids with a black pencil. Give yourself dramatic lashes – either use subtle falsies or try a lengthening mascara like Revlon Fabulash in black. Make sure your brows stay bang on trend, by keeping them thick and defined. Fill in any gaps with a brow pencil or for even thicker brows, use a gel liner and a brow brush! The key to skin this season – is keeping it fresh, natural and glowing! So don’t forget your illuminator – lightly brushed across the top of your cheekbones, bridge of your nose and on your cupid’s bow – for sultry lips. Dust a subtle blush across your cheekbones and blot your t-zone with a loose powder like Revlon PhotoReady Powder. Finally, give your lips a pop of colour for a truly kissable mouth!
