Golden Globes 2010: the dresses

So, in case you hadn’t heard, it RAINED at the Golden Globes and, hold the phone , some A listers even held their own umbrellas. Now, as big as that news was , we were more concerned with the award winners, Ricky Gervais’ presenting job and of course, the dresses. See below for a pick of red carpet hits – alongside the occasional miss… Olivia Wilde – Gucci The House star and former OC actress went for the glamour vamp look for the red carpet, noting that her Gucci gown would be sold off at auction. Proceeds will be going towards the support efforts in Haiti. Julianne Moore – Balenciaga We love Julianne Moore but this Balenciaga gown just doesn’t seem to sit right and has ended up looking a little unflattering. Still, she got to spend the night with Tom Ford as her date so she gets extra fashion credit for that one! January Jones – Lanvin It might be black but there is nothing boring about the Mad Men star’s full length Lanvin ensemble. The actress added a bit of prom night glamour with a matching satin headband and Brian Atwood platforms. Jennifer Morrison – Luis Antonio Major congratulations to Jennifer Morrison who has nabbed a boyfriend that can go out and do her clothes shopping, successfully. The House star proudly told the red carpet that she received this textured number from Puerto Rican designer, Luis Antonio for Christmas. We bet she was one of a few wearing something from their own wardrobe! Kristen Bell – Jasmine di Milo We can’t understand why Kristen Bell told the world she wore a shorter dress to the ceremony because she needed to ‘to be able to move like a tiger’ but we’ll let it pass because this Jasmine di Milo […]

New York pops to London

Two trendy New York shops are set to pop-up in London. 11 up-and-coming designers from New York’s trendy Lower East Side will be selling their collections in two pop-up shops, as London is given a taste of the LES’s voguish vibe. Running as part of the Wish You Were Here Swap project in collaboration with the Lower East Side Group, the pop-up shops will be transported to the Newburgh Quarter, near Carnaby Street in central London, for four weeks. Shoppers will be treated to a discount shopping night and an NY style block party complete with a catwalk show as well as a closing Halloween party as part of the month-long exchange, the timesonline reports. Aside from the obvious rail browsing, expect to take a free trip in an NY-painted London cab and nibble on naughty New York grub in the form of hot dogs, bagels and American brownies at the launch this Saturday. Well, that’s our appetite whet, quite literally. The swap comes as the latest in a growing trend for pop-up outlets, as retailers set up shop for a limited period of time: Topshop’s EDIT boutique has returned, Gap 1969 have recently launched a pop-up store in Kingly Street, and Gucci’s pop-up trainer shop is also coming to London soon. We can’t say we’re not fans of this trend, all this limited shopping stuff is pretty exciting. [Images]

Tom Ford to launch womenswear?

Tom Ford International is looking for funding to expand its line into womenswear. According to Drapers, the luxury label from the ex-Gucci creative director is seeking a $50m investment (yep, that’s a whole £30.5m) to broaden the brand, which currently sells menswear as well as men’s and women’s eyewear and fragrances. Famous for his designs in luxury clothing, accessories, fragrances and cosmetics, Tom Ford has influenced fashion around the globe, transforming Gucci into something magical at his stint at the luxury fashion house. We’ve been waiting ages for Tom Ford to make his return to womenswear design and create his own collection, let’s hope he can be a bit more patient than us. Having just taken a quick glance back at some of his previous collections, however, something tells us he won’t have to wait all that long. [Images]

Tom Ford’s ‘A Single Man’ is a hit at Venice Film Festival

It seems there is no stopping the creative genius of Tom Ford. Having already brought Gucci and YSL back to the fashion forefront as well as starting his own fashion house -Tom Ford – the designer has decided to focus his artistic prowess on the silver screen, making his directorial debut in ‘A Single Man’. The 99-minute piece showcased on Friday 11th September at Venice Film Festival to much acclaim. Based on the 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood, the film explores the loves and losses of a gay man in 1960s Los Angeles, when being homosexual was disapproved my many. The designer – who is himself, gay – protests however, that his film is ‘not about being gay… it’s really a film about love and isolation that I think all of us feel so it is very universal. When I see someone who sees the fil who say’s ‘it”s a gay story,’ I don’t even know what they are thinking, it just seems to me a human story.’ The starring role of ‘A Single Man’ is played by Colin Firth who won Venice Film Festival’s Coppa Volpi for best actor, while Ford himself captured the Queer Golden Lion for gay-themed movies – an unofficial award, independent of the festival. Speaking of this film experience in comparison with the fashion world, Ford revealed:  Fashion ‘is a very fleeting and commercial art… This is pure expression.’

Yasmin Le Bon for Wallis

Yasmin Le Bon is world renowned for her beauty, her 80’s pop icon husband and now her new collection for Wallis. Wallis has previously had the reputation of an older woman’s brand, but Yasmin Le Bon’s first collection will most definitely put Wallis into the fore-front of high street fashion. When entering the show room there were two things that caught my eye. Number 1- The beautiful burgundy, backless goddess dress that gave me immediate envy of the mannequin that was dressed in it.

Volunteering with Mary Portas and Grazia at Westfield London

Who doesn’t love a bargain? Especially at the moment, when every penny counts. So it’s hardly surprising that charity shops appear to be having a bit of a ‘moment’. Oxfam was the first to catch our eye in May by opening a couture boutique in Westbourne Grove. This was swiftly followed by the launch of Mary Queen of Charity Shops, a BBC television series fronted by retail queen Mary Portas that saw her attempt to transform the fortunes of a branch of Save the Children in Orpington. And, to coincide with the show, Portas teamed up with Grazia to open a

Tom Ford’s naked sell

Tom Ford says people look better naked. The fashion designer has his own range of eyewear, fragrances and a luxury menswear line and prefers using raunchy advertising campaigns to promote his products. Tom, who once posed with a naked Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson for a magazine cover, said: “How else are you going to sell perfume to heterosexual men? “I hate talking about sex. The thing is, people look much better naked. They are all the same colour and they can’t screw up. You see someone at the gym and they look great. Then they put their clothes on.”

The style comeback of the Panama hat

God I’m hungry. On the count-down to bikini-gate, and that one thought keeps dancing around in my brain waving beef burgers and two chocolate fingers at me. Despite the crop tops and the very short shorts the shops are taunting me with, there is at least one summer trend that mercifully requires you to cover up. Panamas. It’s a garment with a lot of history, one that’s practical and that can rightfully claim to be a fashion classic. Yes, I’m about to parade those two words out again, sorry- the city pages have their credit crunch, but we fashion writers have ‘investment purchasing’. For the Panama, that’s certainly true.

Summer 09 Trend: Fringing

Move over Dame Shirley Bassey! Fringing has gone beyond curtain trimmings and upholstery, surfacing in a myriad of chic guises on this season’s runways. Yes, this season, fringes are growing on anything and everything: dangling from the hems of skirts, jackets and dresses, embellishing evening gowns and footwear, even trimming bikinis. The burgeoning trend was prominent everywhere on the spring/summer 2009 runways from Alexander McQueen to Alberta Ferretti and Emma Cook to Elie Saab. Come autumn, the trend will still be going strong with designers, including Gucci and Anna Sui, embracing it as part of the folk look. Fringing has now captured the imagination of the British high street as the must-have finishing touch with retailers such as Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, and ASOS all embracing the trend with items that belie their price. Even the A-listers are in on the act, with stars such as Mischa Barton and the Olsen twins inhabiting a West that is sleek rather than wild.

Sex, shirts and sweat: It’s a man’s world at Monsieur Baron

There could hardly be a time more topical to launch a business shirt range. Workers across the square mile donned jeans and jumpers last week for fear of being targeted by G20 protesters. The normally, more-often-than-not very dull topic of business attire, unexpectedly found itself in the spot light. So the celebration a week earlier, of designer business shirt brand Monsieur Baron’s first birthday and lavish launch of the new range at celeb hangout, Kitts in Sloane Square, could hardly have provided more of a contrast. Especially in light of the close city links of the designers behind the brand. If you haven’t heard of them before, then let me fill you in. Monsieur Baron had been manufacturing shirts for fashion houses including Armani, Gucci, Alain Figaret, Eden Park and Cerruti for 25 years before setting up a label in his own name with son Charles Baron, a convertible bonds trader in Canary Wharf and son-in-law Tristan Lagesse, who formerly worked in reinsurance for Lloyd’s.

Menswear Looks – From The Men’s Department

For hot summer style, try subtly inspired menswear looks: pair light, airy sundresses with a cropped tuxedo jacket, or loose pinstripe trousers with a chiffon blouse with ultra-feminine detailing. As guys are cut differently than most of us gals,it’s unfortunately not so easy to raid your boyfriend’s closet (though, this shouldn’t necessarily be discounted as an option). However there are quite a few places where we can skip the ladies department and go straight to the men’s section.
