Best celebrity guests on Sesame Street

As First Lady of the United States, it’s safe to say Michelle Obama has some impressive predecessors to live up to. From Dolly Madison to Eleanor Roosevelt and of course, Jackie Kennedy, there’s always pressure on the President’s wife to carve out her own niche in history. Michelle’s done a fantastic job so far of winning people over to causes close to her heart, including childhood obesity and military families – helped by her impeccable taste in smart ladies jackets and fitted dresses. However, all that pales in comparison to the shoes Mrs Obama has just stepped into – celebrity guest on Sesame Street. Blending pre-school entertainment with intelligent pop culture comedy for mums and dads, the series has been running for an amazing 44 years, in which time it has welcomed the great and good from all walks of life. Here are some previous stars who set the bar particularly high. Natalie Portman, 2003 Natalie Portman threw herself into this 2003 guest spot with adorable gusto, joining Elmo for a performance of the inexplicably bizarre ‘The Princess And The Elephant’. Initially typecast as ‘the Princess,’ she jumps into an elephant costume in what might be an attempt at steering little girls away from their pretty-in-pink Disney obsession, but could also just have been a chance to practise her trumpeting. Johnny Cash, 1973 If anyone was going to win over perennially anti-social bin-dweller Oscar the Grouch, it would be Arkansas’s professionally glum country music star Johnny Cash, singing the story of ‘Nasty Dan’. The ‘Man In Black’ notably wasn’t for his 1973 appearance on the show – although his famous stage attire was worn in honour of ‘the poor and beaten down/living in the hungry, hopeless side of town,’ poverty doesn’t exist in the Sesame Street utopia, so he went […]

Versace’s toned down pre-fall 2014 collection

The Versace pre-fall 2014 collection is finally here, and it’s just as bold and vivid as we – and Donatella herself – could have dreamt of. The entre collection screams Versace in terms of the intricate detail and over the top aesthetic, but it’s a lot more toned down than we’re used to; gone is the the loud abundance of yellow gold and clashing prints that have dominated the catwalks in the past, and in their place are more subtle silver hues instead. Subtle by Versace standards, of course. We bet winter and Christmas were definitely two terms thrown around a lot while brainstorming ideas for the new collection; wintry colours, chunky knits, cashmere coats and even slightly masculine and somewhat androgynous silhouettes all make an appearance. That doesn’t mean that the girl wearing Versace pre-fall is going to be covered up and hide behind her layers though; short, feminine skirts still make an appearance, as do diamantes and edgier designs such as studs and leather. A real mixed bag of designs – all of which stay true to the Versace signature.

Classy Comfort: Stylish Ways to Wear High Waisted Jeans

If you are a woman that keeps up with fashion trends, you know that fashion loves to go retro. These revised retro looks bring a piece of fashion history into the modern fashion world. One such piece of fashion history is the high waist jean design. High waist jeans can be very attractive, providing a unique appeal in comparison to other styles of jeans. The challenge is knowing how to wear these type of jeans. When it comes to low rise jeans, it is obvious that they are meant to provide the opportunity to show off a little midriff. Traditional cut jeans are designed to be versatile. With high waist jeans, you can easily lose the intent of the design. High waist jeans are designed to accent a thin waistline, or in some cases, create the appearance of a thinner waistline. How you wear high waist jeans will determine whether you get all that you can out of them. A simple rule of thumb is not to completely cover the waistline with full length blouses. Multiple Styles The versatility of high waist jeans doesn’t stop at the waist line. According to A Model Recommends, there are numerous styles to choose from. Depending on your particular body style, you can choose form straight cut, boot cut or the ever popular skinny cut. Skinny jeans seem to be the go to style of jeans for most women these days. The truth is they are not the best look for every type of body style. For instance, petite women actually look better in straight cut jeans. Straight cut jeans are actually characterized by falling straight down from the knees to the floor. Although natural rationale might suggest that skinny jeans would be perfect for petite women, the truth is that they make petite […]

Three ways to style your winter boots

Boots are an absolute must for the autumn/winter season and one of their biggest selling points is their brilliant versatility. They can be worn with almost anything in a wardrobe, from skinny jeans to a hippy-chic lace dress, a smart skirt suit or leggings and a casual top – the options are almost endless. Here are three ways to get the most wear out of your beloved winter boots this year. Go brave with bare legs Teaming ankle boots with bare legs and a well cut smock dress is a great way to tick plenty of different fashion boxes. It looks ultra on trend but is also a great way of keeping comfortable during those busy days. Xtra Factor presenter Caroline Flack is the poster girl for bare legs and she demonstrates how bypassing tights can still look classy when items like chic camel coats are added. Tuck in those jeans High heeled boots are brilliant for elongating limbs, especially when they are tucked into skinny grey or black jeans. Mixing sleek items with oversized pieces is what the true fashionistas do, and so if your jeans are super slim make sure you add some volume on top – think combining slim bottoms with an oversized shirt, a chunky knit or a billowing tunic. Add a statement necklace to add even more interest. Go midi Wearing midi skirts is a great way of mixing up your wardrobe. Vintage inspired midi skirts are really on trend right now and they look perfect teamed with ankle boots and a thin knit jumper or smarter top. If you are going for midi then make sure you choose a winter boot with a chunky or stiletto heel – the mid length can look a little unflattering with flat styles. Moda in Pelle is a […]

What we really think of Tamara Mellon’s debut fashion collection

When news of Tamara Mellon’s debut fashion collection fell on our ears – yes, she of the sexy Choo shoe empire – we were beyond ecstatic. Glossed to perfection, this business and fashion stalwart won the industry over a very long time, when she was busy ruling the world of fashionable footwear at the helm of Jimmy Choo. But, since her departure from the luxury brand, Tamara hasn’t wandered too far from the fashion world. Launching to complement her autobiography, In My Shoes, Tamara’s eponymous lifestyle collection is inspired by an interestingly creative mix of mirrors and Guy Bourdin, and hits selected luxury retailers from November 2013. Finding the perfect halfway house between trend-centric style and wardrobe staples, Tamara’s collection won’t be an in-then-out affair. In fact, fashion lovers can expect seasonal capsule collections to drop in stores monthly – no more coats in July and bikinis in February! Reflecting her own “sexy but not vulgar Helmut Newton” style, the collection features statement pieces aplenty: a fringed leather midi skirt; gauzy mini dresses with leather undergarments; top-to-toe leopard looks and enough LBDs to warrant leg flashing – even in winter! Check out what we thought of the collection below: What we like: A navy jumpsuit, featuring front slit bottoms, is perfect when styled with statement accessories. Luxe basics, such as billowing blouses and skinny jeans worn with leather calf and over-the-knee boots are ideal wardrobe investments. What we love: A top-to-toe white suit, inspired by Bianca Jagger in her Studio 54 heyday, punctuated with a leopard print bag. Both the updated leopard print trench and bomber jacket are set to become certified style set favourites! What we’re not sure about: Apart from being a little on the nippy side, you’ll need a strong dose of fashion courage to slip into the gauzy […]

Steep vs. Cheap: Lace cami top

Thanks to the sexily sleepy Louis Vuitton  AW ’13 collection, the style set were all over the idea of sleepwear as outerwear. Lace-trimmed camisole tops and dresses, worn beneath oversized coats and completed with a dark stain on the lips is the look du jour for the new season, and we’re in. Not content with just being a day-to-night option, the lace camisole is enjoying its newly acquired wardrobe staple status; worn with wide-leg trousers and a tuxedo jacket for a refreshing slant on Le Smoking, or paired with skinny jeans, a cashmere knit and boots for an easy day look. Had trouble tracking down the perfect camisole to suit you budget or style? Don’t fret, because we’ve done the legwork and picked out two gorgeous styles that sit either end of the spectrum. Up first at the steep end, the lace-trimmed silk camisole from Antonio Berardi (£600) is a winner for those looking to make a luxe investment. Delicately crafted from pure silk, we love the skinny shoulder straps and sheer black and beige lace detail. The perfect high-end option if you’re after a fail-safe evening look; you’ll be wearing this camisole for years to come. But if your purse strings won’t stretch that far, then fear not! Gwyneth Paltrow and Michael Kors collaborate for Goop!

Two of our favourite people, Gwyneth Paltrow and Michael Kors, are teaming up for an epic Christmas collaboration! Gwyneth Paltrow and the designer will join forces for a one-off Christmas collection for her website Goop (she recently collaborated with Stella McCartney too – click here to refresh your memories), which was reportedly inspired by existing Michael Kors pieces in her wardrobe. “Michael’s clothes are gorgeous, staple, American classics that never go out of style,” Gwyn said. “I thought it would be wonderful to reinvent some of my favourite vintage Michael Kors looks that I have kept for years, that I wear over and over.” Sounds like a good idea to us, too. The collection will include everything from capes to coats to accessories, and is a guaranteed way to make a loved one* smile this Christmas. *you are allowed to class yourself as the “loved one” if you want to shop the collection for yourself. Inspirational vs. Inane: Is the lure of the luxury good worth dreaming about?

If recent research is anything to go by, then the luxury goods industry is booming. Booming beyond cultural and financial borders; letting the emerging economies ride the Prada-lined wave of upscale consumerism, and shaking up the belief that the recession has been a turn off for spend-aholics. From Chopard to Chanel Couture and Piaget to Burberry; luxury expenditure hasn’t slowed down, and we’ve got China to thank for that, amongst newer markets such as Malaysia and India. But does the hike in highly priced goods being snapped up justify the production of what we here at MFL HQ like to call The Super Shopper’s Set? Point in case: this week’s super-spend wish list add-ons: Ray Ban’s £2,893 Aviator sunglasses (below) and, wait for it, the £70,000 platinum stilettos by House of Borgezie (pictured above). Items many of us don’t flinch at the idea of dropping a hot £100+ bomb on, and ones that are often our most prized possessions. If you’re not already gawking at these price tags in utter disbelief, we’ll describe the items in a little more detail. Said sunnies aren’t your average hide behinds, but, in fact, rimmed with an £18ct yellow gold frame. Not only that, but, only 1,200 have been put into production, further upping the exclusivity factor. Heels are the holy grail of a woman’s daily get-up (don’t deny it, you loafer-shod liars), and justifying a Jimmy Choo splurge is, often, a necessity. But what if you suddenly wanted a shoedrobe to rival Tamara Ecclestone’s? You’d be spoilt for choice trotting around in the custom-made Cleopatra stilettos, which can be crafted in platinum or 18ct white or yellow gold. We wouldn’t really blame you if the price tag processing part of your brain, as well your overstretched, extremely worried bank account may need to […]

The ladies at Grazia were lucky enough to pick her brains about a few topics, and here are a few highlights… Julia on her style dilemma: “What to wear on a date. I am still so bad at it! I always accessorise with a nice purse that can also fit everything from my phone to my baby diapers and food! The real reason behind Kim Kardashian’s baby wardrobe Insta-binge

When Kim Kardashian, world’s hottest-mama-right-now, decided to embark on an Instagram binge to introduce the world to her daughter’s teensy, top tier designer wardrobe, we looked at our sorry Zara hoard and felt the pangs of an under accomplished sartorial life. Whereas North West, or Nori, as she is affectionately referred to by her parents, will be running riot in her new, $11 million home in Céline sneakers and stripes, we’ll be sticking to the affordable permutations gracing the window displays of Zara and Cos. But we all know, the Noris and Blue Ivies of the world aren’t born with a silver spoon in their mouths, but rather a sterling silver Elsa Peretti Padova spoon, so Mummy K showing off North’s designer-packed wardrobe shouldn’t come as a shock, right? Well, anything Kimye do sends Richter scale shattering tremors trough celebville (even if its just casually arriving at Gare du Nord in coats du jour), so it was natural for us to wrack our brains thinking of the real reason behind every personalised caption Insta-pic Kim diligently took to uploading for the universe to ogle in a fit of motherly envy. And here’s what we concluded: A snapshot into Nori’s privileged wardrobe is Kim’s way of declaring her induction into the upper echelons of untouchable fashion. That’s right. Her constant mingling with ‘Ricky’ Tisci in custom-made-the-night-before outfits; befriending the lady, and then gracing the cover of Carine Roitdfeld’s CR Fashion Book, and sitting front row at Paris Fashion Week – not forgetting her infamous, floral-clad appearance on the Met Gala red carpet sealing the deal with regards to a Wintour-Dashian friendship- was Kim’s way of not only screaming “I’m back!,” but of creating a watertight, almost Victoria Beckham-esque fashion body image – and, fast becoming the poster girl for the old age […]

Steep vs. Cheap: Pink coat

Not for the faint-hearted or stylistically shy, this season’s dizzying affinity with a certain shade of Powerpuff Girls was all over the street style scene during London Fashion Week. From sell-out high street versions to high-end game changers; the pink coat has industry power players stepping out looking like ultra-chic human candy flosses in oversized pink coats, giving a whole new meaning to the term ‘sugar coated’. (Geddit?) But sweet and sugary it is not, as this season’s take on the girly hue is a sharp, statement-making affair, crafted in a bold style that shouts “I mean real serious business”. So, allow us to introduce this week’s (brave) buys at both ends of the price spectrum; a high-end nod to the ever present androgynous trend by Joseph, and a high street snip in sumptuous mohair from e-tail fave, Asos. Cashing in at the steep end, the Joseph Man wool and cashmere-blend coat (£550) is an investment worth making if coats are your thing. Guaranteed to set you apart from the predictable amongst the style set; keep the rest of your outfit black for a strong look, or clash with a red bag and give sleepy commuters a real wake up call on your way to work! But if you’re tightening the belt when it comes to the all important fashion fund, stick to your high street guns and head over to clickety-click heaven for online hoarders, Asos. Grab the bargain-tastic limited edition mohair alternative to the pricier Joseph coat for a mere £120, and we promise your overdraft will thank you. Will you splurge or slash-yer-fashion-fund?

When My Fashion Life met Carine Roitfeld

When we were invited to The May Fair Hotel for a tête-à-tête with former Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Paris, Carine Roitfeld, ahead of the release of her feature film, Mademoiselle C, a collective gasp was heard at HQ. The fashion documentary follows Roitfeld during the creation of her new magazine, CR Fashion Book. The idea of sharing the same breathing space as Karl Lagerfeld’s best friend and Tom Ford’s muse was dizzying, and we simply couldn’t swallow the sheer overload of Parisian polish we were about to be exposed to. Making our way to the ninth floor (after battling with a stubborn, A-lister proof lift) we finally entered the airy space, where the impeccably dressed name behind CR Fashion Book was waiting for us, a smile beaming across her face, her dainty silhouette wrapped in an extraordinary grey coat. Accompanied by director Fabien Constant, the mastermind behind Mademoiselle C, here are a few  nuggets of golden wisdom Roitfeld delivered, complete with an adorable French lilt: On her best fashion moment: “I will never forget the first time we saw Tom Ford. He called me, maybe 20 times, and I said ‘Who is Tom Ford? What is Gucci? What is a loafer? It’s Boring.’ And then I would say ‘No, we have no time. Call back, maybe next month.’ One day, he asked if he could visit me at the studio, and I said hmm, OK. We were sweating, because there is no AC (air-conditioning) in Paris and it was July. Tom Ford came in and I sat up in my chair and said, ‘Maybe we can help you for the next shoot’ because he was so charming. Working with Tom Ford and Gucci changed my career, and it’s just because Tom Ford came in and he was very sexy looking!” On […]

London Fashion Week SS14 Day 4 highlights

Osman Taking a more summer appropriate (natch) approach for spring/summer 14, the vivid pinks and limes of last year were watered down to pretty pastels, with flashes of dainty embellishment. Skirts were sometimes gauzy, cut asymmetrically to produce a floaty effect that made the fabric appear like it slid away from the body. Voluminous coats, surprisingly, are a key piece for next season, given their not so climate appropriate use in summer (well, it is Britain after all), and a three-quarter sleeved candy pink number worn over black trousers won us over. Not so much a winner: the skirt-over-trousers look – it’s far too don’t-wanna-go-there Nineties for us! Erdem Always a show season biggie, Erdem’s tougher stance on the runway was welcomed with opened arms. After enticing us with zingy neons, expertly combined with fragile lace for spring/summer 2013, this time around, he took us on a monochrome adventure. Still working his famed ladylike wearability into this high impact collection, Mr. Moraliaglu gave us sheer skirts sat pretty atop couture-level sweatshirts; a come hither black lace gown was made more wearable over a crisp white shirt, and neat collar and pocket details brought a somewhat masculine edge to his work. Shoes remain major, however – a far cry from the kind of dainty strap sandal you’d wear with an Erdem number: think rebelliously chunky platform soles made interesting with splashes of bold print. Tom Ford High octane as always, Tom Ford’s show was, possibly, the hottest ticket of the fashion month schedule this side of the Atlantic, making the hearts of several editors beat faster than they do on deadline day. A lesson in indulgence it was, as Mr. Tom Ford set about presenting the most luxurious of oversized leathers in burnt caramel; a sexed-up, thigh skimming dress dripping in […]

A guide to looking stylish in cold weather

Looking good as the temperature gets cooler is no mean feat, especially in the UK where the winter weather (as we occasionally like to discuss) ranges from wet and miserable to icy, wet and miserable. But it’s not impossible to create a stylish look without sacrificing your warmth. Below you’ll find our three top tips on looking great whilst keeping warm in cold weather. Layer up The easiest way to stay warm without looking like an abominable snowman is to wear several thin layers rather than one large jumper. This is also a great idea if you’re planning on going out for the whole day, as you can easily add layers as the weather gets cooler. Invest in a cashmere jumper for evenings out, as this type of wool is incredibly warming whilst being thin enough to keep your outfit from looking bulky. If you want to create a smart winter look, browse through Hackett’s range of men’s knitwear, where you’ll find fashionable patterned jumpers, v necks and cardigans. A tweed coat There are plenty of styles of coat you can get for the winter, but perhaps the smartest and most versatile is the classic tweed coat. Whilst tweed coats vary in length, a knee-length one will be the most practical for cool weather. Tweed is a thick and durable fabric, meaning that it will easily keep you warm in the winter. A tweed coat is also very versatile, so whether you want to wear it with a shirt for drinks in the evening, or with jeans for a casual day look, it will look great. A flannel shirt Upgrade your cotton summer shirt to a thicker flannel one when the weather gets cooler. With a flannel shirt, you can look just as smart if you want to, but the […]

But being the savvy shoppers you are, we know you won’t nosedive into blindly bagging the next ‘It’ item, and that’s why we’ve rounded up the reasons for and against bagging this chill-blocking beauty, below! Yay Great alternative to a coat: If there’s no shortage of coats and jackets in your wardrobe, then a cape would make a refreshing addition to your cover up collection. Versatile styling: Wear it as a cape for daytime with flats and a trusty tote. But by night, why not turn it into a dress […]

Tamara Mellon’s exciting new project revealed!

Tamara Mellon has finally lifted the lid on her new project – and it’s pretty exciting! The former Jimmy Choo creative director will be launching her very own accessible brand that will comprise of women’s ready-to-wear, shoes and handbags. It wouldn’t be a Tamara Mellon collection without some gorgeous accessories, right? “It’s limited, so people can come in and if they miss it there is something else two weeks later,” Tamara Mellon said. “I’m also going to sell women clothes in the right season. I am going to sell coats in September and bikinis in June.” What a crazy cat, she is! The key colour of the entire collection will be a sexy shade of red with a heavy reliance on leopard print, and we can expect everything from jumpsuits, jackets, trenches, and even the ‘legging boot’, which according to Tamara is “like a thigh boot that pulls right up into a legging. You can wear a sweater over it or a big man’s shirt and there’s no gap.” Interesting. The collection will reportedly be unveiled in mid-November at New York’s Pace Gallery – complete with a Richard Misrach photography exhibition – before heading to her standalone Tamara Mellon store and her tamaramellon.com website. What do you think of the first look above? Do you think selling coats in September and bikinis in June will catch on? [Racked] [Image]

5 of our favourite autumn/winter trends

Now that spring/summer shopping has well and truly entered the sale phase, and you’ve probably spent a day crying over those full priced Wang heels you nabbed the minute they hit Net-a-Porter, only to see them go into the sale a few weeks later – and in your size, too – it’s time to move on. Well, there’s only one way to get over the pain of parting with your cash like that, and in fashion speak, that translates as autumn/winter. Remember when we picked out the top 10 autumn/winter trends you could wear fresh off the runway, without actually having to wait for the season to hit the fashion scene? Now that new season wares have started to land in stores, we’ve decide to whittle our previous top 10 down to our five favourite fall 2013 trends to covet come September. Oversized coats The strong, masculine silhouette doesn’t seem to date, with a stronger presence every season, making us want to ditch our belted trenches. From boxy to sleeveless and oversized, the new season coat is a shapely affair, with softly gliding contours in a palette ranging from ashy grey to pillar-box red. Pink Sugar spun shades of candy floss pink are back in all tones; from dusky pink skirt suits at Jonathan Saunders to bubblegum pink vinyl finishes at Roksanda Ilincic, the rosy hue is the colour of choice to lighten up fall’s dark mood. Take the frothiness associated with wearing pink off by accenting with black separates. Fur The staple fabric for colder months (the faux variety, of course!), fur dominated the new season runways; but we’re not talking in it traditional guise. Think multi-layered, three-colour looks; acid green and electric blue stoles and eye-popping patterned furs. J Mendel and Vionnet went as far as incorporating the […]

What to expect from Rihanna’s autumn/winter 2013 collection

So, what do Rihanna and her River Island co-designer Adam Selman have up their sleeves for the autumn/winter 2013 collection, then? Well, if we are to believe Mr Selman, we can apparently expect a far more diverse, ambitious, and fun collection, which is something that we could totally get on board with! “We had a lot more fun this time round,” he began. “I can’t give too much away, but we travel so much and experience so much of the world. We’re very lucky to do so and that definitely inspired us. The idea of sports uniforms and masculine vs feminine is something we evolved from last season too. There was a lot of pressure with our debut – this felt more relaxed.” You may recall that Ri Ri’s debut collection was a tad on the skimpy side (fair enough – she is constantly in sunny climes and she did say she designed the collection so she could wear the pieces herself, so fair play to her) so how did she go about designing heavier items for the chillier seasons? “The way I approach winter style is to layer up summer clothes and Rihanna does the same. But there are coats and sweatshirts – those pieces were key. It’s a little more refined.” Phew – we will be getting some fine pieces of outerwear too! Oh and don’t worry, there will be some mean dresses perfect for the Christmas party season in the collection too – Rihanna and Adam really have thought of everything! The Rihanna for River Island autumn/winter 2013 collection launches on September 12. [Vogue] [Image]

Kate Moss struts her stuff for Stuart Weitzman AW13 ad

Two Kate Moss ad campaigns in just as many days? Result! Yesterday we showed you a brunette Kate Moss pose nude for Versace’s autumn/winter 2013 ad campaign, with nothing but some strategically placed bags to cover her modesty, and today’s it’s time to check out her latest ad for Stuart Weitzman. Oh and she’s back to being blonde again! Mossy was shot by none other than Mario Testino, and is rocking a seriously oversized coat, some thigh-high boots and not much else for the picture above, and is showing off her enviable stems in equally high boots in the rest of the images too. We see a bit of a theme here! “The look is all about miniskirts and big furry coats, lots of texture,” Kate told WWD about her latest Stuart Weitzman ad. We’ll see these ads break in the August fashion glossies, but we’ll also have a video to look forward to as well. And rumour has it, it features Kate Moss strutting fiercely and purposefully to the tune of These Boots are Made for Walking. What else?

MaxMara reissues Kate Middleton’s coat, names it after her

Remember that chic beige MaxMara coat Kate Middleton wore last year? Remember how it – like most things the Duchess of Cambridge steps out in – sold out almost instantly after she was spotted in it? Well, MaxMara now has made a whole lot more of the virgin wool and cashmere mix coat, and is renaming it the ‘Kate’ in her honour. Seems fair, seeing as she no doubt helped shift a few coats by wearing the original. If you’re quick (and we really do mean quick!) you can head to the website right now and get your very own for £875 before they all sell out again. Even though it’s supposed to be one of the hottest days of the year today and long coats are the last wardrobe piece we should be thinking about, two sizes have already sold out completely, so go! Don’t even finish reading the rest of this post… go forth and shop before it’s too late! [Image]

Get Kim Sears’ floral Mulberry look

Kim Sears might have mixed feelings of excitement, nervousness, fear, nausea and anticipation when she goes to watch boyfriend Andy Murray play tennis, but we’re a lot more chilled and relaxed. We usually just wait for her to pop up on screen so we can analyse what she’s wearing, as she’s turned into a little bit of a style maven over the years. We were particularly pleased with her latest ensemble which comprised of a cute floral dress, a tough denim jacket, and a dreamy piece of arm candy otherwise known as the Mulberry Willow tote. Drool! If you want to copy Kim’s look, we found some very similar items to help you on your sartorial copy-cat journey. Ps: We know Kim’s tote is in the nude colour, but we felt the bright orange version was so much more appropriate for summer; and it complements the rest of the outfit perfectly! The Top 10 Summer Sandals Edit

Slipping into summer sandals marks the beginning of taking pedicured (baby) steps into the sunnier climes – or so we like to hope! And just like we’ve shed the knits, winter coats and layer upon layer of casual t-shirts, it’s high time we did the same in the shoe department. Summer sandals took several guises on the spring/summer 2013 catwalks; from mid-heels to super-embellished, metallics to lovely lace-ups, and we couldn’t be more excited to start the somewhat ritualistic pairing of shoes and summer outfits! It all depends on the look and comfort level you’re going for. Often, summer sandals are associated with gladiator-like, flat styles, but don’t limit yourself to heel-less options. Our top picks aren’t necessarily sandals you want to strut around in, but more of beach-to-bar style. We’ve done the handiwork of rounding up 10 of the best summer sandals, now its your turn to start the outfit imagining! Marc by Marc Jacobs sandal, £300, Shoescribe: This tri-block colour, mid-heel sandal is perfect for pairing with a floaty dress for a late-night summer soiree. Isabel Marant Elvis sandal, £370, Matches: This summer is set to be summer’s biggest hit. Wear with denim cut-off shorts and a louche tee for a relaxed summer look. Matilda woven sandal, £30, Topshop: Nothing says summer quite like a woven piece, and these pretty, feminine sandals hit the spot! Faster studded flat sandal, £25, Asos: These flat sandals have a Christopher Kane-esque feel to them, and we’re not complaining! Comfort and style rolled into one. Primrose leopard animal print multi strap sandal, £25, Stylistpick: If you’re stuck on colours for summer, this sandals mixes up print and pastels to perfection. Pair with a floaty maxi dress for beach-to-bar style. Christian Louboutin Druide sandal, £595, Net-a-Porter: These mid-heel sandals scream WOW! Then again, anything […]

Fashion Charts: 5 things going up, and 5 things going down this month

Going up Punk fever: The punk revival was well and truly felt at this year’s Met Ball, with added thanks to Miley Cyrus’s outlandish barnet and Madonna’s flesh flashing shenanigans. But will it last? We hope the magical era is here to stay for good, so we can break fashion rules and paint our (not so flat) stomachs with anti-gun slogans. Check out our Punk inspo moodboard for your fix. Gatsby fever: Taking a detour from crazy hair and garish outfits, the other era the fashion world is currently dabbling in is the Roaring Twenties. With Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby set for release next week in the UK, expect a rise in opulent hair accessories, art deco prints and more flapper dresses you can shake a jazz dance move at! Shop our top Gatsby-inspired pieces here. Festival kick off: Although the major headliners are taking place smack bang in the middle of summer, several niche festivals are taking place this month, which can only mean one thing; getting your festival wardrobe into gear. Check out our top 10 picks here. Embellished tees: Luxe tees have been gaining momentum amongst the fash pack for some time now, so when we laid our peepers on the embellished 3.1 Phillip Lim Nueva York tee , we were sold at hello. The new low sandal: Or, dubbed the ‘Elvis’ sandal, thanks to the rhinestone detail; embrace summer’s new take on the gladiator sandal but with a flattering (read: pain-free) heel. Look to Isabel Marant for a high end hit, or Zara and Mango do equally stylish, pocket-friendly versions. Going down Glove sleeves: Come on, Kim! What were you thinking? Dressing to flatter your bump, we understand, is priority, but hand concealing doesn’t really come in to it. Enough said. Winter coats in spring: After experiencing […]

Mens Jeans Trends 2013

Thankfully, a pair of jeans is always in style. However as the seasons move on and the lookbooks evolve, it’s good to keep up to date with the latest styles, fits and colours to keep your favourite denim friend looking fresh. Light Denim Over the last few years light-wash denim has built a bit of a bad reputation, due to the awful pairs that have often been adorned by those with a very misguided sense of fashion. However, over recent seasons light jeans have worked their way back into the style conscious gent’s capsule wardrobe. Simplicity works best for lighter jeans; look for very slight distressing to the denim and avoid anything with patches, rips or other unnecessary embellishments. In general, slimmer fitting light denim will look best. As a general rule, darks should be combined with lights. However rules are made to be broken; a beige jumper or a sharp white t-shirt can look great with light denim, especially when the sun starts shining. Classic Indigo Thankfully, these are a wardrobe essential that every man should already have. If not, then go for a simple, long-lasting pair; Levi’s are always going to be a good choice. Make sure your staple pair is well tailored; it can be surprisingly cheap to have them adjusted to your shape and definitely worth it if they’re your go-to jeans. A classic pair of subtly-stylish indigo jeans will help you to pull off bolder colours and patterns up top. Try pairing them with a camo shirt, or an orange long sleeve top. Bright statement coats are also in this season, so you could opt for a subtle outfit that is stimulated by a vibrantly coloured raincoat. White jeans Definitely one for the more fashion-daring, white jeans can be a fantastic addition to a summer […]

Get Jessica Biel’s wrapped up All Saints look

How’s this for Bank Holiday Monday inspiration? While we Londoners are quite grateful for the rays of sunshine beaming through our windows (a sight we seldom see on Bank Hols, let’s be honest) we’ve heard that the rest of the country isn’t so lucky. So, while Hannah Simone’s fun and flirty dress is great inspiration for the sunnier parts of the UK, the new Mrs Timberlake’s LA look will have to do for the colder, wetter parts. Don’t say we don’t think of everyone! Jessica Biel was spotted out and about in Los Angeles wearing an All Saints coat – one which is still up for grabs, hooray – teamed with some casual slim-fitted jeans, some sunnies, and casual grey scarf. She brightened up her otherwise colourless look with a mustard yellow cross-body bag, which we heartily encourage you to try if you are going to try and channel Jess’s look. Beating the British Weather with Smarter Clothing Choices

[noskim] While there is plenty to love about Britain, the weather would not be at the top of many people’s lists. The climate here can be extremely unpredictable and more often than not, pretty miserable. Even in the summer, it’s hit or miss as to whether we’ll actually see the sunshine. This can make it very difficult to plan anything, from where to go and what to do through to what to wear. Given the unpredictable nature of the British weather, it is important to make some smart clothing choices. This is not to say that you can’t shop for summer clothes, a new spring wardrobe, party clothes for the winter, or colourful autumn outfits. What it does mean is making sure you have a number of wardrobe essentials that can help you to beat the fickle British weather. 5 essentials for every woman’s wardrobe In order to ensure that you’re fully prepared for the weather, clothing-wise, no matter what the season, there are a few essential items that every woman should have in her wardrobe. These smart clothing choices will help to ensure that you have something to hand to conquer the sometimes freak weather conditions that the UK can experience. 5 of the essentials you should make sure you have in your wardrobe include the following: 1. A smart cardigan: You may think that jumpers and cardigans are autumn or winter staples. However, the unpredictable nature of British weather means that you never know when you might have to layer up. A cardigan can just be slipped on when it gets chilly and taken off again when the temperatures start to rise. 2. A cool pair of wellies: Most of us associate wellies either with autumnal weather, gardening or washed-out mid-summer festivals. However, as we have seen, snow […]

Spike Island – The Film: No-one knows what’s happened to it, but here’s what to do whilst you’re waiting.

Spike Island, the big screen representation of the iconic 1990s Stone Roses gig, was set to be released on 5th April 2013. It wasn’t, no one knows why, but like a cool and aloof front man, it seems it will only be released when it’s good and ready. What was that…you’d got yourself all fired up to relive the glorious ‘Madchester ‘scene? Well, here are a few things to pass the time until you can immerse yourself in Spike Island completely. Wear dungarees The decades will melt away as soon as you clip your extended jeans over your shoulder and onto your chest. They take some time to get used to, but it’s well worth it when you sink back into the nineties sporting the original ‘onesie’ craze. For guys, start purchasing all clothing at least two sizes too big. Everything was baggy in the nineties; no one really knows why, but heck, it was comfy. Swagger This will take some practice, and it’s not something you can go into without proper preparation. You’ve seen the swagger; a particular sway that’s still prevalent across the bars of Manchester, and you’ve probably also seen the ones who couldn’t quite get it right, the ones who get sniggers, tuts and waves of pity wherever they go. You don’t want to be that guy. For complete Spike Island nostalgia; work on your swagger, the walk and the attitude, to get you into the swing of things in time for the release. Button Up Another fail-proof way to scream ‘Stone Roses’ biggest fan’, or just to get involved at all, is to button up. The nineties loved high neck shirts, jackets and coats – all of which would be buttoned snugly round the neck. We doubt it was to keep warm, more likely that […]

Top 10 AW13 trends you can wear now

With Fashion Month well and truly over, have you been left with an impatient, fluttery feeling in the pit of your stomach from witnessing next season’s fashions? Naturally, fashion types want it all now, RIGHT now (and some do – catwalk fresh ‘n’ all!), but being six month behind the lust worthy collections doesn’t have to prove so painful. See, trends do a fair amount of season-hopping, and, just because the fashion calendar is currently on AW13, doesn’t mean you can’t recreate what you’ve just seen on the runways with your current wardrobe. So, to help you beat the fash pack and get ahead of the style game, we’ve picked out the top 10 AW13 trends that you can wear right now. Until next season, enjoy! Checks and Plaid Although Saint Laurent gave us copious amounts of plaid for AW13, as did 3.1 Phillip Lim and Emilia Wickstead; Dries Van Noten led the trend for SS13, with beautiful sheer plaid, layered in a wearable way.  Blue The new black, blue is having quite a moment! Roland Mouret, Elie Saab and Fendi made having the blues look fashionable for SS13, whilst Barbara Tfank, Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors brought it bang up to date for AW13. Volume Cocoon coats, sloping shoulder knits and generously cut skirts were big (pardon the pun) at Emilio de la Morena, Stella McCartney and Céline for AW13, but Daks, Eudon Choi and Nina Ricci are already championing oversize for Spring. Minimalism Maxmara, Ports 1961 and Stella McCartney steered the minimalist movement for SS13, but AW13 saw Victoria Beckham, Céline and J JS Lee make us pine for sleek lines and fuss-free fashion. Wardrobe staples in a clean, print-free palette are winners. Capes Batman has never been chicer. Chloe, Valentino and Victoria Beckham made us […]

FASHION CHARTS: going UP and going DOWN this month

Want a one stop shop for all things HOT and NOT this month? Our fashion chart rounds up the most talked about things in the frantic world of fashion, from the ‘Russian pack’ to Rihanna at River Island on Oxford Street, to Cara Delevingne’s questionable footwear choice and the headgear revolution that’s getting out of control. We’re pretty sure we haven’t missed out any vital fash flashes, but if you’re in the know, and think we could do with extending our list of what’s au fait, and what’s strictly non, non, then go ahead and let us know! UP Elena Perminova The 26-year-old wife of Russian media mogul Alexander Lebdev, and darling of every credible street style blog, Elena Perminova (and her formidable wardrobe) is a lady after our own hearts. Wearing couture like it ain’t no thing, snagging exclusive FROW seats and a model herself, it’s safe to say she outdoes rival street style mavens and models, alike! Catch her gallivanting through the fashion capitals with the ‘Russian Pack (see Ulyana below), donning every designer you can imagine, from the haute to the avant-garde. Come next season, our beady style eye will be firmly fixed on this beauty. Rihanna for River Island Yes, the hype has been circulating for a while now, but yesterday saw Rihanna’s collection for River Island finally leap from the catwalk on to its concrete counterpart. The collection landed in stores, with Rihanna herself greeting fans for the launch at the Oxford Street store wearing a black dress from the collection (natch). Get your dose of urban 90s style while it’s hot and available, or, in Rihanna’s words, ‘Phresh of the Runway’. Swapping tonne heavy coats for tees A gloriously sunny day was enjoyed by all in London yesterday, although most the fash pack have mostly […]

Paris Fashion Week AW13 highlights from Stella McCartney, Zuhair Murad, Giambattista Valli and more

More fashion big guns were out in force yesterday, as the autumn/winter 2013 collections continued to make their highly anticipated debut on the Paris Fashion Week catwalks. Stella McCartney flew the flag for Britain by showcasing another great collection comprised of bold, vivid colours and revolutionary cuts and silhouettes, while Zuhair Murad gave us some fab  red-carpet-ready pieces that we reckon would be perfect for the upcoming award ceremonies. We’re feeling one of the short dresses on one of the youthful stars of today for the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards… what say you? Elsewhere in Paris, the Giambattista Valli show went off without a hitch, with the attention shifting from the lavish, exquisite ballgown to slightly more casual pieces. There were lots of coats, parkas and general pieces of outerwear on the catwalk, all in a fairly subtle and understated colour palette, but the elegance, glamour and overt femininity were still just as apparent as ever. London Fashion Week AW13: Highlights from Day 4

It;s nearing the end of yet another eventful and outstanding season at London Fashion Week, and we couldn’t be more excited about the offerings for next season! But as the saying goes, the best is usually saved till last, and so it was onto day 4 of the fash week schedule. Big shot fashion names were on the schedule for day 4, including Tom Ford (gush!), Erdem and Christopher Kane, and we couldn’t be more pleased with what these geniuses put before our eyes for next season! From Burberry to Peter Pilotto, packed with the most exciting names in fashion and the most anticipated shows in the Fashion Month calendar, here are all the highlights you need from day 4 of London Fashion Week: Burberry With Tom Odell serenading show attendees at the catwalk entrance, this show was only set to be on thing: the greatest. Every season, Burberry is the most buzzed about show, attracting a stellar frow (Rita Ora, Tinine Tempah and Kate Beckinsale were all in attendance). And for autumn/winter 2013-14, the fashion crowd was left just a positively dumbstruck.  Last season’s fizzy metallics turned glossy and grown up this season, as honeyed caramel trench coats and translucent pencil skirts mixed with skilfully subdued leopard print; a cute heart print on a collared shirt and dress broke the rules, whilst the emphasis on luxe animal prints accented with hard details made this collection a whole lot of fun. Christopher Kane Colour-pop belted buckles; fur-wrapped shoulders and a heavy dose of Kane’s charm made for an eye-pleasing collection. For autumn/winter 2013-14, Christopher Kane – with his PPR gold star badge pinned proudly to his chest – brought us camo print in its most desirable form, and ensured pleated minis and centre-slit skirts tugged at our heart strings. Packed with Kane’s signature bare midriffs; we were also treated to […]

London Fashion Week AW13: Highlights from Day 3

With Fashion Month speeding on, it was onto day three of the stylish festivities. Packed with major shows, including Temperley London, Mulberry and Jonathan Saunders, the fash pack were out in full force to absorb and delight in everything next season has to offer. Alongside spotting the fashions for next season, our front row radar was in overdrive, too! Alexa Chung looked resplendent sat front row at Mulberry (natch), joined by frow partner Lana Del Rey; Olivia Palermo at Temperley sporting a gorgeous pink clutch; Pixie Geldof looked print-tastic at Jonathan Saunders and, of course, the obligatory Wintour spot at Matthew Williamson left us in a state of awe-induced hyper ventilation (it happens every time)! So, here are all the highlights from day three of London Fashion Week: Mulberry In fashion time, it was relatively decent start to the day with an 11am Mulberry show at Claridges, and we have to say, we needed the lie in! Woodland wonderland-meets the Nineties was big at Mulberry, as skater skirts over cropped trousers made an appearance, along with oversized tweed plaids on statement en outerwear in a whimsical woodland setting, complete with Mulberry fruits and a jaw-dopping butterfly and wild flower installation that adorned the entrance to Claridges. Dark hues of deep emerald, wine tones and black reigned supreme, and Mulberry;s signature botanical-inspired prints were splashed across form-fitting dresses. Outerwear was the highlight for us; we could happily take home every coat we saw! Temperley London Temperley London is a Fashion Month favourite for us, and we couldn’t quite contain our excitement when we were informed that Hitchcock beauty Tippi Hedren was the source of inspiration. In a bid to move away from being associated solely with occasion wear, plenty of flirty cocktail dresses made an appearance, with an emphasis on a […]
