Fresh Ways To Style The Classic Ankle Boot This Winter

For many of us, ankle boots are the ultimate winter footwear staple. They go with just about everything and can be dressed up or down with very little effort. Pair with jeans and an oversized coat for a casual daytime look, or team with a classic LBD to put a fresh twist on evening wear for the winter. There are countless ways to work this comfortable, statement piece into just about any outfit combination. A winter-appropriate take on evening wear Eveningwear is perhaps one of the most difficult ways to work the ankle boot, but it can be done with the right styling. Take a leaf out of Alexa Chung and Jessica Stein’s books by using boots to add a tough element to an otherwise feminine outfit. The more fanciful the dress the better, as the boots help to give this girly ensemble a cool, edgy vibe that stands high above the rest of the fashion pack. This look is particularly workable if you’re a little taller, as ankle boots make a welcome change to skyscraper heels.  If you still want to add some extra height, simply choose a boot with a platform or a statement heel – the tortoiseshell heel boots from Tu are perfect for making a statement on a budget. One thing’s for sure, the extra protection and structure you get from an ankle boot is certain to make the finished look extra comfortable. Keep it cosy with slouchy jumpers and midi skirts Much like dresses, skirts don’t typically lend themselves to being paired with boots that cut off at the ankle. If you style this the right way, you’re on to a winner – it’s a fresh look that was seen everywhere this London Fashion Week. The trick to making this look work is all about […]

Pump Up The Volume: 5 Oversized Basics You Need Now…

Oversized clothing isn’t a new fashion trend. It has been in the industry since the 80’s. However, giving this trend a go can be difficult. If you buy clothes which are too big, you might look silly if you don’t know the basics at all. Hence, if you want to get the most of these oversized clothes while keeping your fashionista appearance, then you should learn how to do it right.  For example, it’s best to choose a statement piece and balance it with slimmer pieces to achieve a better look. Also, if you’re a fan of layering, then you can use oversized clothing to layer it. For example, you can wear a normal t-shirt and layer it with a big sized hoodie or coat. This approach might look good on you.  With all that said, oversized clothing might be one of the biggest fashion trends you need to follow. You heard it right. Fashion’s going big. Real big! From oversized shirts to boyfriend coats, basics have increased in size this season, which certainly isn’t a bad thing at all. We always welcome a little comfort in our wardrobes. But it’s also important to avoid overdoing the supersized look to attain a more desirable outcome. Be careful with your fashion choices to make the most out of your appearance. For instance, you can team flared trousers or a voluminous skirt with a fitted top or ribbed turtle neck. Moreover, massive shirts always work well with leather leggings or opt for skinny jeans if you prefer and accessorize with a bag big enough to hold the kitchen sink. Thankfully, there are many leggings style and designs that you can choose from. In fact, many online shops sell a wide range of leggings and other similar clothing items for your oversized look. […]

6 Trends We’ll Be Coveting This Season

The best thing about a new season? Well, that’s easy. For lovers of fashion, it is and will always be experimenting with exciting, hot off the catwalk trends. And here at My Fashion Life, we’re no exception. Granted there are some autumn/winter trends that we’ll never let go of  anytime soon- for example skinny jeans, knee high boots and biker jackets to name a few. But for the most part, we’re open to stepping out of our comfort zone and giving the latest trends a good go.  This season however, is slightly different to the rest. Unlike past years when fashion has moved so fast that the number of micro-trends would literally make your head spin, recent times has witnessed fashion slowing down , and as a result many of our favourite trends have transcended seasons . The great thing about this has meant we’ve really gotten a chance to get our teeth sunk in to a trend and make it our own, as well as finding wonderful new ways to adapt it, to the changing weather. Here’s the trends we’re loving for this season.. 60’s & 70’s chic We’ve always loved both the 60’s and 70’s when it comes to style, and designers appear to feel the same way with the reappearance of many 60’s and 70’s iconic pieces making a comeback to the catwalks. The era that gave birth to style icons Twiggy and Bianca Jagger are here to stay. Stock up on vintage pieces such as flares, rock t-shirts, faux-fur coats and any other of your favourite pieces from that time of year. For some great finds, head to Sherrys London. We especially love their collection of colourful shift dresses. Prints From tweed to stripes to animal prints and polka dots on bags, trousers, tops, you name it, prints of any […]

Essential Organization Tips For Your Whole Home

All it takes is one week of laziness for your home to slide into complete disarray. One week of kicking off shoes in the hall, throwing dirty clothes on the floor, stacking mail on the table, and letting dishes sit in the sink, and your home isn’t just disorganized ? it’s a complete mess. Once it gets to that a certain state, you become even less likely to clean up, and you are living in a perpetual state of chaos and clutter. Until now. The following quick tips will help you tackle the untidiness around your home and restore much-needed order to your whole home. Bedroom It’s easy enough to explain away bedroom messes with the phrase, “No one is going to see it.” The problem is that you are going to see it, and every time you do, you will feel disappointed. While it is important to have storage furniture in your bedroom, it is more important to have a smart closet organization system. Here are a few tips from experts on closets: Double your hanging space without drilling by purchasing inexpensive hanging rods. Hang your shoes using short shoe pockets rather than long, ugly shoe bags. Hold loose items like purses with open baskets, which also keep straps and handles in-shape. Organize your clothing by garment then color, or you can choose another method as long as you stick to it. Living Room The living room isn’t the appropriate place to store things, so the best way to create order in this shared space is to establish hard and fast rules for every member of your household. Some examples include: Outerwear (including coats, shoes, and socks) must be removed before entering the room. Personal belongings (such as books and toys) must enter and leave with their owner. Small […]

5 Ways to Dress Stylishly When It’s Cold

It seems like once the temperature drops for the season, all of the clothes you absolutely love go into hibernation and it’s time to break out the frumpy and billowy coats and sweaters. On the contrary, those coats, sweaters, long skirts, boots, and various other winter clothing have massive stylish potential all on their own. You can discover this for yourself by trying out these five different ways to style up your winter wardrobe. 1. Layer, Layer, Layer Winter really means you get to wear more of your fashion-friendly clothing at the same time. If you have a sleeveless dress or shirt that you love, throw on a turtleneck or other long-sleeved top under it. Layer long-sleeved turtlenecks and sweaters with ponchos and coats. Put on some leggings under that skirt. There are all kinds of possibilities, and even combinations that might ordinarily seem like they clash could surprise you at how well they work. 2. Get Creative With Scarves Scarves are the ultimate winter accessory. Whether you have a favorite cold-fighting wool scarf you just won’t leave home without or there’s a beautiful infinity scarf that will go perfect with your new pea coat, explore your options and learn to wrap it in a new way. Infinity scarves can be worn as head covers as well as in various designs around the neck, so experiment with it and try something new for every outfit. 3. Grab a Belt If your coat or layered look still seems a bit drab, grab a belt and wrap it around the outside. It gives a slightly slimming appearance and adds just the right amount of metal to pull almost any outfit together. You can keep it tight or let it hang loose. 4. (Faux) Fur Is In It’s a good idea to steer […]

How To Recreate Emmy Rossum’s Makeup At The 2016 Critics Choice Awards

The best thing about award season? Well, aside from lusting after the decadent red carpet gowns, has got to be all the hair and make-up inspo. While, we may not be able to afford couture, we certainly can recreate some of our fave beauty looks and this year we absolutely adored Emmy Rossum Parisian-inspired makeup at the 21st annual Critics’ Choice Awards. The timeless look was all down to the handiwork of celebrity makeup artist Jo Baker. “Emmy fancied super sleek and modern hair – I suggested that a soft looking radiant skin and lips would be perfect but the main focus being on her eyes.” said Baker. Here’s a complete breakdown of the products used and how to apply: EYES After prepping Rossum’s skin, Baker took Rimmel London ScandalEyes Eyeshadow Stick in Trespassing Taupe and dabbed a few rough dots along the base of her eyelid. Then working quickly smudged it over Emmy’s eyelid using her fingertip, creating a shadow base for Emmy’s eye makeup. Next, the celebrity makeup artist applied Rimmel London Exaggerate Smoke ’n Shine Eyeliner in Little Black Smokey along the actress’ lash line and smudged it with a small brush. She then slathered Rimmel London ScandalEyes Eyeshadow Stick in Bad Girl Bronze inside Rossum’s waterline, making sure some of the liner got stuck in her lower lashes, and then smudged it with the end of her fingertip, “This adds a little warmth around Emmy’s eye, which works great with her brown eyes,” said Baker. For thick long-lasting lashes, Baker applied several generous coats of Rimmel London ScandalEyes XX-treme Mascara in Black and lastly dotted Rimmel London ScandalEyes Eyeshadow Stick in Whitness White on the inner corners of Rossum’s eyes to brighten. SKIN For radiant glowing skin, Baker applied  Rimmel London Lasting Finish 25HR Foundation in Ivory and using a small blender eyeshadow brush, applied a couple of strokes of RimmelLondon Good To Glow Highlighter […]

Women’s winter jackets: flattering and functional

When you think of a winter jacket, do you think of a puffy, unattractive garment that swallows you up?Women’s winter jackets don’t have to be unattractive.  In fact, they can be as flattering as they are functional – if you know how to shop for them. The key is to find the right fit and to choose one that will give you some mileage. First, it’s a good idea to choose a coat in a neutral colour. Black, brown, camel, beige, navy or even dark green or wine are versatile and timeless colours that will carry you through more than one winter season without looking dated.  Remember that you can always change things up with different scarves and other accessories to get different looks from your jacket. Equally as important as choosing at timeless colour is choosing a women’s winter jacket that is made out of a high-quality material. Wool blends will not only keep you warm, but they will also be durable enough to last for several seasons.  True, you may have to spend a few extra dollars for a well-made piece, but you’ll be save money in the long run because you won’t have to repurchase a new jacket every year.   Now let’s talk about fit.  When it comes to finding a flattering fit, the first consideration is the length of the jacket.  If you aren’t sure which length is best for you, go for one that is knee- to thigh-length.  These styles look great on every body shape, whether you are short or tall, slim or curvy.  Don’t let the hem go any longer than that, however, or you’ll look shorter than you are.   The next consideration is the style of the jacket itself.  The shape your jacket should fit and flatter the shape of […]

Our 3 Top Fashion Tips For Autumn

As Bob Dylan once nasally intoned, “The times they are a-changin’”. And although he wasn’t singing about fashion, he’s as good an example as any to examine how quickly trends can alter. Just look at Dylan’s move from huge unruly hair to a wide-brimmed hat and pencil moustache combination. From bohemian mass to slinking style in only a decade. But the times change much more quickly where fashion is concerned. And with the golden suns of summer quietly dissipating into the orange leaves of autumn, it won’t be long before your sun-drenched dresses are looking a little out of fashion. So let’s not allow the seasons to ruin your glamour prowess. Try a few of these tips and you’ll be able to strut down the high street as though it were a catwalk in Milan. An up-and-coming brand Every year, the brands of the high street rise and fall with the times. Your Topshops become bottom shops while your Nexts enter the past tense. But some up-and-comers are worth the kind of praise that will keep them in good stead for years to come. The plus-sized clothing brand Lavitta, for instance, has made waves in the fashion industry lately, showcasing a wide range of brands that could make anyone look like a fashionista. Their range spans from sizes 12-24, giving the larger lady a huge assortment of choices. From dresses to coats to tops and much more, this is the company to keep visiting this autumn. Get fashion-Clueless The cast of Clueless might be wearing on, but the 20-year-old film is still as fresh as ever. Indeed, the 90s is back in a BIG way and is, like, totally the “in” thing right now. Iggy Azaelea has purloined the style for a music video, while denim and crazy colours are […]

Nighttime Wear: Fascinating Pajama Facts Most People Don’t Know

If you mention wearing pajamas or PJ’s as they often get shortened to, it is likely that you will conjure up an image of something snuggly and warm and your thoughts will turn to bed time and maybe hot chocolate too. There is something instantly comforting and appealing about pajamas that many of us might associate with our childhood years at first, but PJ’s have become mainstream for grown-up’s too and even adults can get footie pajamas and a whole range of nighttime wear. Colonial origins The word pajama that we use today to describe this popular nighttime attire, originates from the Indian word piejamah, which describes loose pants that were secured by being tied at the waist. These comfortable trousers were popular with British colonials who considered them to be the perfect thing to change into for an afternoon nap while the sun was beating down outside. It did not take long from this point to before the piejamah became the perfect companion for sleeping at any time and when the colonials returned back to Britain, the trend did not take long to catch hold. Footed pajamas Although many people tend to associate footed pajamas with kids, they actually started out as being a design that was intended for adults. The very first versions of footed pajamas were created when people decided to sew socks to the bottom of their pajama pants, but it was not done just for warmth, as the addition helped to keep their toes protected from bugs like termites. Au naturel Millions of pairs of pajamas are sold every year but there are still plenty of men who are trying to resist the lure of the nighttime garment, by sleeping au natural. It seems than just over 45% of British men are not aware of […]

How to trim your fashion expenses

Looking one’s best can be expensive. A way of life to some is a hobby to many and an addiction for others. Keeping abreast of the latest and greatest fashion trends can burn a hole in new pockets the moment payday arrives. Shoppers such as Tess Stimson, writing in the Daily Mail, willingly admit the compulsive nature of their love of clothing and its power. She estimated a spend of at least £100,000 across two decades and decided to go ‘cold turkey’ feeling all the better for it. So if someone with that level of devotion can change their habits, why can’t we all? Thankfully, a wardrobe clear-out can be a rewarding experience, creating space and money, and also benefiting others. It applies as much to children as adults, as events such as NCT sales will take baby/child clothes from sellers and are also locations to find low cost, high quality items for buyers. There will be dresses, t-shirts or coats that you haven’t worn in years. You might not even fit in them any more, but are clinging on in the hope that you’ll slim down to your former size. If so, get rid, as seeing them can be a dispiriting experience, and if you do ever slim down to your previous size, you deserve a new dress anyway! If the items are in good condition you could car-boot them, put them on eBay, send them to sites such as Music Magpie for cash, donate them to charity shops, or hold a swishing party where clothes can be swapped among friends. Making time in the day to monitor trends, sales and offers could reap rewards. Set up a calendar system so that you know when particular sales and events end, and keep any vouchers you find in a safe […]

Barbour still reigns supreme

The Barbour jacket – it’s as quintessentially English as Big Ben and Pimms. While this iconic brand was once the uniform of rural aristocracy (think polo playing girls and pigeon shooting gents), a growing celebrity fan base including Kate Middleton, Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards, Alexa Chung and former boyfriend Alex Turner have made it both mainstream and seriously cool. The trend is showing no sign of losing its appeal. With everyone wearing theirs a little differently, the Barbour is not only a style must-have, but a very flexible one too. Countryside chic Princess Diana can be credited with single-handedly bring the Barbour jacket to the masses. Wearing a green Barbour for a more casual, relaxed look, she was the poster girl for the fabulous ‘Sloane Ranger’ look that would later lead to a rise in sales of not only Barbour but Harris Tweed and Hunter wellingtons. Still a strong look for strolling in the great outdoors, wear the green Barbour with a thick knit jumper and high-waisted tweeds. Girly cool Back in 2007 Lily was at the forefront of the new Barbour wave, wearing her waxed Barbour jacket over a hoody and bright pink dress throughout her performance at Glastonbury. Instantly making Barbour accessible and effortlessly cool, a whole host of celebs followed suit and built Barbour into their festival fashions, and later into urban wear too. Make like Fearne Cotton and Alexa Chung by teaming the classic black waxed Barbour with cord collar with short, girly dresses or A-line skirts. Smart and masculine And if you thought Barbour was just for the ladies, think again. When Daniel Craig donned the Beacon Heritage Sports Jacket in Skyfall, sales of the jacket soared as bloggers and internet fashionistas waxed lyrical about how an already hot Mr Bond looked even hotter. The jacket was […]

Rihanna: Take The Old, Make It Look New

Rihanna’s style is impossible to miss. It’s not just her unmistakable voice, but she’s got a take-no-prisoners approach to fashion and music that keeps her at the top of the charts… and keeps her trying new fashion ideas, even if they don’t quite work. Take her new album, R8, where’s dropped her devotion to the current music trends and gone against the standard Pop Star audience tested grain entirely. Saying she wants to make songs that are “timeless” which she’ll still be able to perform in 15 years, she’s gone more acoustically driven and brought on Kanye West as producer, including guest appearances from some amazing musicians. (You’ve probably already heard the first single to be released from R8, FourFiveSeconds, which features Paul McCartney.) R8 is coming out sometime this year, and while you’re waiting you can get your Rihanna tour tickets now (she’ll be playing Rio on 26 September). Yet while Rihanna is bucking the trend in the studio, she’s been pulling out older trends to wear on the street. Lately that’s meant bringing back some late-90s / early-00s stuff from the club girl scene but, since she’s Rihanna, she’s made everything look almost unworn. Stirrup Pants Take her stirrup pants, the latest zombie trend she’s tried to resuscitate. It’s hard to say it’s working, but it’s also hard to say it’s not working. Am I going to wear it? No, but if you can figure out how make it look fantastic… go for it. Technicolor Fur Coats You can almost hear the techno pumping in the background. The pink faux fur coat just screams “rave queen,” but it’s hard to hate it. The peachy pink shade is nice and it’s either got some cool split sleeves or built-in mittens. Either way I kind of like it. Athletic Sleeves […]

One of our personal favourites from the  2015 Critics Choice Movie Awards was the beautiful Reese Witherspoon. Paying homage to Brigitte Bardot, Reese’s make-up was created by none other than celebrity make-up artist Molly R. Stern. “I wanted Reese’s look to be simple, clean and modern, to offset her stunning Lanvin gown,” said Stern, while her luscious locks came courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel. We’ve got step by step tips on how you can re-create Reese’s radiant hair and make-up at home. MAKE-UP Prep the face by massaging in Natura Bisse the Cure Pure Serum for a luminous base. Even out your skin tone by sparingly applying Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation. Contour the hollows of your cheeks blending upward and add a pop of color with an apricot blush. Apply Christian Dior Fusion Mono Matte Baked Eyeshadow in 761 Mirage into the crease of your eyelids and give them a neutral smoke with NARS Eyeshadow in Blondie. Roughly line and smudge the upper and lower lash line using Jillian Dempsey Khol Eyeliner in Jet Black. To complete the eyes, curl your lashes and add two coats of jet black mascara. Finish with the moisture-rich Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon in Sedona Sands for a natural pale pink lip.   HAIR Spray John Frieda Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow-Out Spray from mid-shaft to ends to create a foundation for optimum volume and hold. Part your bangs in the middle and blow-dry the hair smooth with a medium round brush for a full, sexy blowout. Take a 1” inch curling iron and curl the hair very loosely, leaving the ends out. After curling the whole head, apply John Frieda Beach Blonde Sea Waves Sea Salt Spray to break down the waves and give […]

Top tips for buying a warm and stylish coat this winter!

If you haven’t already, it’s time to invest in a coat that’ll take you through the cold season in style and comfort. Keeping warm is a necessity, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look good too, right? You’ll likely need to wear your winter coat whenever you leave the house, so it’s important to choose something you’re guaranteed to be happy with. If you buy quality, then a good coat will last you a few years, so give some thought to what you need. Unsure of what to consider? Here are a few tips. Size Matters Regarding a coat’s size, there are a few things you need to think about. For example, length. A lot of people like the look of a long coat that reaches down to the ankles, but this can be quite impractical depending on your day-to-day routine. Do you drive a lot? Or are you constantly hopping on and off buses? Such items tend to have a habit of getting stuck in doors and generally getting in the way. Next, put some thought into how tight your ideal coat should be. You might think you’ve found a perfect fit, but looser attire can look a lot better and feel more comfortable. This will also come in handy for people who prefer to wear a couple of layers underneath their coat on particularly cold days. Be Careful with Trends As mentioned earlier, a good-quality coat will last you through a fair few winter seasons, so it’s a good idea not to obsess too much about the latest trends – as they will probably change within a year and you might find yourself regretting your decision. It might be wise to go with something a little more neutral, and then accessorise with other items of clothing. Your basic […]

5 Winter trends we’re totally and utterly obsessed with!

The cold winter months make you put on more or rather, thicker clothes than usual, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style for comfort! Keeping things trendy while staying warm can seem like a challenge, but don’t worry—we’ve got your back. Whether you’re an avid thrift-store shopper or someone who prefers to buy shoes online, there’s a winter wardrobe trend out there that will show off your unique style and keep you warm. We’ve collected the top five trends for your wardrobe to guide you on dressing up for your daily jaunts around winter wonderland. Layer it up! Layering pieces of clothing you usually wear in warm weather with those designed to keep the chill out remains to be a top wardrobe trend. You can play with the layers, textures, and shapes of various clothing pieces. For instance, you can wear a short summer skirt with an oversize sweater so that the hem of the skirt peeks out just so under the sweater. You can also wear a pair of sheer tights under the skirt and ankle booties to keep your feet warm. Go with the faux. Faux fur is still a top wardrobe trend, and you’ll find it on coats, jackets, hats, lapels, vests, and scarves. A long faux fur coat is a classic piece you can wear over your little black dress. For something more casual, go for long faux fur vests over a form-sitting sweater. For those who love their jeans and rock-and-roll lifestyle, faux fur jackets are in order. Strut that quilt! Trends do keep coming back, as can be seen by the re-emergence of quilted jackets and coats on the world’s most stylish runways. Diamond-quilted coats and jackets are commonly seen worn by hunters and other outdoors-men. Quilted winter jackets, especially those designed […]

Paris Fashion Week SS15 highlights from Balenciaga, Dries van Noten, Rochas and more!

Last stop: Paris! Inspired by John Everett Millais’ Ophelia, the Dries van Noten spring/summer 2015 collection was as magically dreamy as they come. With the light, woodland setting – in particular the mossy carpet which was used for the models to walk on – we also got hints of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. All in all, it was a collection of pure, natural beauty, and we have a feeling we’ll be remembering it for seasons to come. The Balenciaga spring/summer 2015 collection was very highly anticipated, and not just because Kim Kardashian and her adorable little girl North West (who wore a miniature leather leggings-and-skirt combo and a Yeezus tour T-shirt – bless!) were sitting pretty in the front row. Alexander Wang presented a minimal and modern collection comprised of black, white and subtle pastel colours, and geometric shapes, embellished, beaded details and subtle yet spectacular embroidering. We love the Matrix-esque long coats that grace the catwalk – practical yet powerful! Take a look at our Paris Fashion Week highlights below to see everything that’s been capturing our attention so far: Balenciaga The Kardashian-Wests arriving for Balenciaga Dries van Noten Rochas Alexis Mabille

Top 10 reasons to love autumn

Why would anyone look forward to the end of the sunny weather and darker nights? Well actually there are plenty of reasons – and here are ten of the best. 1. Halloween Possibly the best thing about autumn: when ghouls, ghosts, and goblins leave their lairs! We love the smiles of the little tricksters and treaters as they appear at our door with pleading eyes and facepaint – don’t we? And it’s always a good excuse for a party and there are so many superb outfits for potential monsters of all shapes and sizes – click here to find out more. 2. Bonfire night/fireworks November 5 is a date of historical meaning going back more than 400 years, and although nowadays we tend to show our displeasure for Government by just not voting Guy Fawkes Night remains a night of fun, family and fireworks, perfectly accompanied by a jacket potato and a nice mug of brew. 3. Leaves changing It’s so subtle that you might not even realise that anything has changed until one day you realise that you’re strolling through a handsome pile of brown, red and gold leaves, or driving past impressive looking trees which are showing all their best colours just prior to the onset of winter. 4. Starbucks Latte …and particularly the pumpkin spiced latte, a gloriously creamy and sugary mass of goodness that you miss the moment it’s gone. The drink has become so popular that it came back to the UK in August this year according to this piece in the Daily Mail, but this should not really be a surprise – more than 200 million have been sold in the past. 5. Woolly scarves Do you go for a big and bold knot or a simple drape across the shoulders? Either way the […]

The Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne for My Burberry ad campaign is here!

We showed you the teaser pic a few months ago, but now it’s finally time to check out the brand spanking new ad campaign for Burberry’s new fragrance My Burberry – starring the iconic Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne! “Kate has such a presence and she has a great sense of humor and style,” Cara said of her co-star. “We had met a few times before we worked on the My Burberry shoot together so I knew we would have fun together and that the pictures would be great. I’ve always admired Kate.” This is the first time that Kate and Cara – both iconic British supermodels – have posed together for an ad campaign, so this is a pretty special moment for so many reasons. Mario Testino had the honour of shooting the girls, who are both wearing Burberry’s Heritage trench coats. What else? And speaking of special, Burberry’s new fragrance is exactly that. “My Burberry is the true embodiment of our brand, in scent, in design and in attitude,” said Burberry CEO Christopher Bailey. “A fragrance that takes its lead from the iconic Burberry trench has to be outstanding in every way.” The “My Burberry” name apparently came from the way in which proud owners refer to their Burberry trench coats, but it also might have something to do with the interaction of the perfume and campaign. The brand is getting more personal than ever, allowing shoppers to customise their very own My Burberry fragrance bottle, as well as the ending of the TV advert with their own initials. Pretty mind-blowing! As for the scent itself, it was “inspired by a London garden after the rain” which is pretty much one of the nicest, distinctive smells of Britain. Don’t forget to watch the video campaign below – it’s […]

Kate Upton lands Elle UK September issue cover!

And so it begins! The very first of the September issue covers has made its way onto the world wide web (God bless the internet!), and it’s none other than supermodel of the moment Kate Upton posing pretty for Elle UK. Well deserved, Kate! The former Sports Illustrated model is rocking a stunning Prada coat on the cover, which definitely softens the summer to autumn transition blow. We are totally okay with putting the bikinis away for another season if it means we can bring the stunning autumn/winter coats out. Do you agree? Inside the mag, Kate models some killer threads from the likes of Christopher Kane and Burberry, among others, and opens up about her modelling – including her epic body transformation… “When I first started modelling, I was a normal catalogue model,” she told the mag. “Then, I became a woman, and I was really excited about becoming a woman. Because I’m from Florida, it’s all about being in bathing suits. It’s a different view of beauty there. You are ugly if you don’t have a curvy body. And I didn’t have one, and then I got one, and thought, ‘Yessss!’” We would also think “Yessss” if we had her body too! The Elle UK September issue is out on August 1st so make sure you head to your local newsagent and snap it up fast. Don’t be alarmed if you have to fend off a few men for the last copy, either.

Spotlight on: Winser London Celebrate Turning One!

Winser London celebrates its first birthday! The eponymous brand of Kim Winser, OBE, started trading online in February 2013 with a collection of understated, high-quality, timeless pieces and since then, the brand has gone from strength to strength. The selection of wardrobe essentials modelled by the oh-so-chic Yasmin le Bon became an instant hit with regular shoppers and celebrities alike; Emma Watson was recently spotted on her return from the Oscars wearing a Winser trench coat. Within just few months of its launch, word of Winser’s range had spread internationally, with order enquiries coming in from New York, Milan and Paris, from consumers who were willing to wait on reserve lists for items to become available in their home countries. Since then, the Winser fashion house has launched several pop-up stores in selected branches of Harvey Nichols, John Lewis, Rossiters of Bath, Gerrards Cross and Peter Jones, with more in the pipeline. Although the bulk of their trade and rapid expansion is taking place online, Winser is keen to open more pop-ups across the UK, because “The advantage of a physical presence also allows the customer to touch and feel that the fabric and yarn quality is real luxury, which obviously they cannot do online.” Its success can largely be credited to Winser’s expertise. The former CEO of Pringle of Scotland and Aquascutum has a reputation for reinvigorating a brand and generating growth. Her business approach to the launch of Winser London is laudable. With a strategy of recruiting a blend of experienced personnel and young, enthusiastic beginners, and using local suppliers to keep manufacture and distribution costs low, Winser has managed to satisfy her consumers, to create employment opportunities and support the local economy too. It’s possible, of course, that the success of Winser London is being aided from […]

Male Shoes Work For Us Females Too!

Fashion has always been a safe place for experimenting with gender roles and last season proved no different. Borrowing from the boys, androgyny was a prominent fixture on the catwalks, with Stella McCartney, Dior and Vanessa Bruno teaming traditional masculine tailoring, large overcoats and statement sweaters with a few feminine flounces to brilliant effect. And it looks like these playfully androgynous trends are here to stay for 2014. Particularly in the shoe department it seems. Men’s brogues began in Ireland and Scotland in the 19th century as the shoes of labourers, punched with holes that would allow river water to escape. Yet somehow the charmingly decorated footwear has found its way into the hearts of women everywhere. Generally affordable, they have definitely asserted themselves as a new must-have in every girl’s wardrobe. You can pick up a bargain pair for as little as £12 if you click here. But just how did it come to be that such masculine “granddad shoes” are a new staple in women’s fashion? Brogues began appearing increasingly on celebrity fashion idols, such as Sienna Miller and Maggie Gyllenhaal, and are declared in fashion magazines as the new durable ballerina flat. And this is perhaps the key to their magic. Previously women’s footwear has very much been dominated by the flimsy, water-leaking flats or sky-high, ankle breaking heels. And the brogues offer a much comfier equivalent. A surge of bunions and hammertoes can perhaps be at the root of the Brogue’s rise to fame. Research at Iowa State University in 2013 showed that higher heels put women at greater risk of knee osteoarthritis and joint degeneration. While a 2009 study found 87 per cent of American women suffer because of painful footwear, while only 68 per cent of men claim this. Therefore it is easy to […]

Kate vs. Diana…Who wore red better during the New Zealand tour?

Wore what: Kicking off their royal tour of New Zealand, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge landed at Wellington airport’s military terminal yesterday – cutest babe-cessory in tow – looking every inch, well, regal. For the official occasion, Kate chose a striking red Catherine Walker coatdress and matching pillbox hat, and the media was quick to remind everyone of the same occasion, over three decades ago, when the late Princess Diana chose a similar look for the same event. Although hers was a black and red look, complete with a contrasting black clutch, Kate wins for the most adorable royal accessory, hands down. Narrowly avoiding puddles before the world’s media, whilst effortlessly carrying an excited 9-month-old in your arms is no mean feat; and we think Kate did a beyond fantastic job! Unsurprisingly though, this makes the job of choosing a winning look near impossible! Who wins: Famed for her gentle nature and beauty that shied away, Princess Diana’s look for the official visit back in 1983 was a fashion triumph: making coats cool as the centrepiece of a look. And this is a tradition that Kate, too, has carried on. From her M Missoni look as a wedding guest to the Maxmara number named after her; she’s elevated the humble coat’s status to party staple so effortlessly, we all want in. Given her respectful ode to Diana’s legendary wardrobe at such an important event, and the fact that we’re struggling to get over the explosive levels of Prince George’s cuteness; we declare both looks as winners. Do you have a favourite look, or are you, too, stuck on both? [Images: Duchess of Cambridge; Princess Diana]

Treat him to a denim jacket….

….here’s some handy advice before you make that purchase. As fashion items go, denim jackets have had something of an unfair representation, which has led to them being avoided by gents who are unsure of how to wear them. Lots of people are put off the idea of investing in a denim jacket by the notion that it’s a crime against fashion to sport double denim. And while that may be true to a certain extent, we feel that this alone shouldn’t stop anyone from sporting one! Of course, the most obvious way to avoid committing a fashion faux pas is to avoid double denim altogether. If your man is deathly afraid of experimenting with this look, advice him to stick to wearing chinos or cords when wearing a denim up top. Take a look at this handy video from MensFashionMagazine.co.uk, which gives some great inspiration as to what to wear with a denim jacket. However, wearing double denim isn’t necessarily a fashion no go; although there are certain rules that should be applied. 1. Sporting jeans and a jacket in the same tone of denim is best avoided. If you need a refresh on what this looks like, cast your mind back to the 2001 American Music Awards. Justin Timberlake may be something of a fashion icon these days, but we’ll never forget the night he stepped onto the red carpet in a double denim ensemble, complete with cowboy Stetson. Relive the horror and check it out at MTV.com. 2. Double denim looks fabulous when you employ contrasting tones. Dark denim works best on the upper body, so it’s always a good idea to favour this shade for the jacket. Take a look at this G-star jacket, part of the full range of denim jackets available online from Diffusion […]

Paris Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Lanvin, Balmain, Balenciaga & more

The celebs were out in force for the third day of Paris Fashion Week – and we don’t just mean on the front rows! Some of the most in-demand supermodels walked the runway for some of the biggest fashion designers in the world. Here are our highlights from the latest goings on at Paris Fashion Week: LANVIN AW14 Rihanna joined Emma Roberts and other such famous faces to witness the Lanvin autumn/winter 2014 collection first-hand; we’re not jealous at all, honest! Alber Elbaz presented a versatile yet somewhat experimental collection this time around – we believe his exact words were Experimental, Extravagant and Extreme – ensuring that fur and ruffles played a huge part in his light and fluffy new season range. Asymmetric silhouettes and Chanel inspired tweed also made an appearance. The silk dresses were a refreshingly new yet reassuringly familiar addition to the collection, adding the signature Lanvin elegance to the proceedings. Red carpet faves, for sure! NINA RICCI AW14 Jessica Alba watched the Nina Ricci autumn/winter 2014 collection from her comfy seat in the front row, which has got us pretty excited as we imagine what new-season pieces she will be wearing over the next few months as she goes about her daily business or rocks up on a red carpet. Sparkling, shimmering eveningwear was the highlight of the collection, with the designer not being shy of an embellishment or two. Or six. Wool skirt suits, chic jackets, cosy cashmere jumpers, and much more! BALMAIN AW14 Although there were a lot of big faces on the Balmain front row – did we mention Rihanna was one of the schlebs sitting pretty on the FROW? – some of the world’s biggest and hottest models of the moment walked the show too. It was a star-studded affair all round, […]

WATCH: Milan Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Dolce and Gabbana, Versace, Roberto Cavalli & more

It was a busy weekend in Milan, with the likes of Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Jil Sander, Dolce and Gabbana and Bottega Veneta all unveiling their new autumn/winter 2014 collections to their adoring public. Dolce and Gabbana AW14 Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were inspired by all things dream-like for their ‘Enchanted Sicily’ Dolce and Gabbana autumn/winter 2014 collection. Despite the intricacy of the pieces and the overall new season vision, the collection was very simplistic, with medieval influences creeping through every so often. Bold, exaggerated shoulders, woodland inspired prints throughout as well as flower and key embellishments, and even a new type of handbag that even requires a padlock; it was all in there! Our highlight was definitely the finale, as this time round we were treated to a parade of sparkly yet somewhat gothic Tinkerbells strutting down the catwalk. Can you get on board with looking like a gothic fairy for the new season? The Dolce and Gabbana boys certainly make it look appealing don’t they? Versace AW14 Donatella Versace also pulled out all the stops for the Versace autumn/winter 2014 show – no surprises there, really. “This is a collection about the power of a woman, not just her inner strength, but the attitude she presents to the world. Every woman can find that power in Versace,” she said of the new collection. Powerful and provocative are definitely two words which can be used to describe the majority of the new season pieces; an abundance of bias-cut dresses made their way onto the Italian catwalk, as did asymmetric hems, military references, and stunningly tailored trapeze coats in bold and vivid colour palettes. Oh, and lots and lots of fur. Long fur, short fur and all other fur in-between! Roberto Cavalli AW14 Another designer who went for the over-the-top […]

Milan Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, Versus Versace & more

Time to watch the unveiling of the autumn/winter 2014 trends from behind our computer screens, as London Fashion Week is well and truly over (sniff) and the fack pack has now flocked to Italy for Milan Fashion Week! Milan certainly doesn’t mess about, as it’s straight down to business on day 1 with collections from Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, Versus Versace and Fausto Puglisi. Gucci went in a little bit of a different direction this season, as Frida Giannini took inspiration from the boys – more specifically, the Gucci menswear collection – for the autumn/winter 2014 threads. She juxtaposed her most androgynous garments with the girliest of pieces for a versatile, retro collection.   Gone was the overt sexiness that we’ve come to know from the brand – especially if last season was anything to go by – and a softer, vintage collection was in its place. Soft pink oversized coats, geek chic glasses, slim fit trousers in a super-flattering silhouette, mod-inspired outerwear, the lot. Alberta Ferretti was influenced by nature for her latest collection, trees, leaves, and bird feathers all made an appearance on her new-season pieces.  It wasn’t all woodland inspired though, as typical Alberta embellishments, sequins and silhouettes were also present, making for another versatile and somewhat wholly wearable collection. Fausto Puglisi was clearly inspired by the Big Apple, as the Statue of Liberty made several appearances on t-shirts and jumpers alike. The designer presented a casual cool collection for the effortlessly chic and stylish Fausto Puglisi girl; fun, flirty, body confident girls with everything to live for! And then we had Donatella Versace’s efforts for the Versus Versace autumn/winter 2014 collection. Donatella’s influence was very much present in the entire collection, which you can see with the tight leather dress and leather biker jacket. Typical rock and roll […]

WATCH: LFW AW14 highlights from Temperley London, Mary Katrantzou & more

MARY KATRANTZOU AW14 COLLECTION She may have been dubbed the digital print queen by way of her hypnotising design USP of seasons past, but Mary Katrantzou took a refreshing detour this season. Dizzying print work was replaced by symbols that held a deeper meaning; school badges, medals, clock faces, a coat of arms all made an appearance, intricately embroidered onto fuzzy sweatshirts, patchworked onto maxi skirts and running down pleated gowns to resemble a holy vestment. Suits cut in jacquard are set to become the fashion set’s new favourites, and one in particular – a bird-print skirt suit with pleated gym-skirt – demanded attention. Delicate slips dresses with hook straps featured a metal mesh adorned with gold-tone hearts, squares and pearls, tricking onlookers into believing they were admiring an art installation. Well, we were certainly in awe. TEMPERLEY LONDON AW14 COLLECTION Temperley London may hail from the leafy enclaves of Somerset, but, designer Alice Temperley didn’t stick to the quiet side for autumn/winter ’14. Bringing her signature decorative style to the table, Byzantine architecture-inspired prints were splashed across unbuttoned coats, tightly belted at the waist. Pretty skirt suits were updated with a boxier silhouette, while stained glass-imitating laser prints prettily played out across red carpet worthy dresses. New for this season, however, was the concept of layering luxe evening looks: an oversize fur stole in a fluffy peach hue was breathtaking over a shawl and barely there gown; while neck scarves, outerwear and shawls daubed in striking floral prints were the accessory du jour to seek protection from the winter chill. Just perfect. RICHARD NICOLL AW14 COLLECTION As blue emerges to be the hue of the hour for next season, Richard Nicoll didn’t hold back in feeding our appetite for the coldest shade-gone-hot. School girl attire-gone-haute was the message here, […]

London Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Emilia Wickstead, Joseph, Hunter Original & more

Braving the gusty elements, Team MFL trekked to Somerset House (and beyond) for day two of London Fashion Week fashtivities. Well, given today’s stellar schedule, cosying up indoors and living vicariously through Style.com just wasn’t an option! Winter work wear woes went straight out the window at Holly Fulton, this morning, as the ideal “working girl” made her way down the runway. Etching the collection purely from her experience as a working woman – but one with a head for serious, workable fashion – Fulton gave us masculine coats imprinted with stunning motifs; sheath dresses and fluid pencil skirts featuring kookily enlarged mobile phone bearing hand motifs – avec perfecto manicured nails, of course. A nod to the “corporate cog” came courtesy of a glittery knit printed with the aforementioned  component, while mini briefcases and stacked bangles alluded to Fulton’s ability to create magic with her hands, literally. Effortlessly moving from a black to grey palette, Joseph is the go-to label for those channelling fashion’s new comfort-led direction. The autumn/winter 2014 presentation promised chill-proof staples with that rooted for masculine allure. Long-line, voluminous knits sat atop perfectly tailored pants, while the sharpness of a suit blazer was tempered with pleated skirts, pussy-bow blouses and touches of mid-Western fringing sliced in black leather. A coordinating trio of peg leg pants, oversize knit and beanie hat broke away from the neutral colour trail, but otherwise, this collection is an easy- goers dream come true. Possibly the dreamiest of designers when it comes to this side of the pond; this season, Emilia Wickstead reminded us of those dark, wintry nights we refuse to embrace with ease. The show notes referenced “Film Noir”, and we got exactly that: a clear vision of what winter’s dangerously stylish woman will look like, come September. From a […]

London Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Bora Aksu, Felder Felder, DAKS & more

New York Fashion Week got us officially geared up for the autumn/winter 2014 trends, so we weren’t going to let a little (ok a big, inconvenient and suede-shoe-destroying but we’re fine, we’re over it) thing like rain stop us from flocking to Somerset House along with the equally drenched fash-pack to see what the first day of London Fashion Week had to offer. Felder Felder, DAKS, Eudon Choi, Bora Aksu and J JS Lee all showcased their new season creations to the fashionable London crowds, and didn’t seem phased by the pressure to make sure their collections matched the standard of those in the Big Apple. Tommy Hilfiger inspired us to go on a snowy, winter hike, and Jackie Lee has inspired us to go camping thanks to the new autumn/winter 2014  pieces we saw early this morning. There was an abundance of houndstooth and check print that adorned the casual, cool, practical but on-trend pieces,  and the colour palette was kept understated. A far cry from her feminine, all-pink collection from last season, but isn’t versatility and the ability to create the shock factor what a good fashion designer is? We rest our case; well done J JS Lee! Eudon Choi got us all into the party spirit/gave us that Friday feeling thanks to the Rolling Stones soundtrack. Sex and drugs are optional, but rock and roll was essential! Legendary music choices aside, we saw lots of tartan on the catwalk (we told you, didn’t we?) although it came in a colder, bluer hue than the traditional red one we’re used to. The collection as a whole was a refined take on 60s fashion – and that’s something we got from the cigarette trousers, flared cuffs and print-tastic knitwear pieces as well as the aforementioned soundtrack. Oh, and you […]

Steep vs. Cheap: Houndstooth-print coat

Spy the snowstorm this morning? Rather, did you survive it? Well, given spring hasn’t fully sprung, yet, we’re still hanging onto our toasty, winter-warmer essentials. Yes, that involves a rather trusty and chill-proof coat – but one that doesn’t compromise on style in the slightest. If you’ve been searching for that winning combination, then look no further than our outerwear finds for this week’s Steep vs. Cheap. Coming in at the pricey end is the Mosley coat by alice + olivia (£250). We’re totally digging the houndstooth print (very Sixties), and can’t quite get over the snug factor! The cocoon cut feels perfect for now, while the look-at-me print is strong yet classic. Not got the extra cash to burn? Why worry, when high street saviour, Mango, is at the rescue? We’ve tracked down an equally modish version of the houndstooth-print coat in a delish wool-blend, for a rather modest price tag. Cashing in at £59.99, you’ll have enough left over for a second splurge. Just don’t blame us. So, which one will it be? Shop both coats below. Steep: alice + olivia Mosley long oversize cocoon coat, £250, available at Oxygen Boutique. Cheap: Houndstooth wool-blend oversize coat, £59.99, available at Mango.

New York Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Carolina Herrera, The Row, Donna Karan & more

The latest New York Fashion Week offerings haven’t disappointed thanks to stunning collections from the likes of Carolina Herrera, The Row, Donna Karan, Opening Ceremony, Ralph Rucci and Tommy Hilfiger. Carolina Herrera’s autumn/winter 2014 collection was another highlights for us. While some of our fave designers are still looking back for inspiration for their shows, Carolina Herrera has gone in the totally opposite direction. “I’m a bit tired of all those collections that have a reference to the 40s, the 20s, the 30s,” Carolina told AFP. “I need something else. I need the future. That’s why the proportion was very important for me — the low heels and something different from the things we have seen before.” Embellishments, flowing trains, and a cheeky turtleneck thrown in for good measure, too! No rest for Donna Karan, as the designer was straight back out there presenting the collection for her eponymous line following her very successful DKNY show. Although the designer was celebrating her 30th anniversary, there were  no obvious bright colours and party poppers in sight, as she went for a darker theme for her AW14 collection. Slinky and somewhat sexy tailoring and silhouettes juxtaposed with large fur coats and parkas. It was all about winter over at Tommy Hilfiger – a cosy, snowy winter in the great outdoors. No need to infer and make assumptions – there was actual (fake) snow on the runway, so it wasn’t hard to see where Tommy Hilfiger was going with the theme. We loved the hats; if only our hair stayed so intact in the British wind and rain. Here’s what else went down at NYFW: Tommy Hilfiger The Row Ralph Rucci  Opening Ceremony

Kenzo belted chunky-knit coat: Yay or Nay?

A coat? In spring? That’s what you’re thinking, right? No, we’ve not completely lost our style marbles, but one look at the 50 shades of dull sky and you’ll get our drift. As much as we’re dreaming of willowy blouses, thigh-grazing minis and the softest of pastel hues to take us into spring, we can’t resist good-looking outerwear for when the weather can’t make up its mind. Enter the colour-pop cover up from Kenzo (£356): a riot of colour and cosy, chill-proof chunky-knit against a salt and pepper backdrop. Yum. But, a coat so crazy comes with reservations, so we’re taking a moment to weigh up this Kenzo beauty’s purchasing potential below… Yay Alternative cover-up: If you’re done with drab coats, let this colour daubed version take you through the final stretch of winter – stylishly, of course! Great price: Given you’re bagging Kenzo for a pretty charming sum at our favourite online designer outlet, you’ll automatically land the bragging rights, much to the envy of all your friends. Day-to-night coat: Thanks to its belted waist and sleeve detail, why not take on the coatdress trend with this Kenzo number? It’s perfect for after-work drinks in the chill. Nay Statement piece: As much as we love it for the look-at-me detail, it could also be the reason this buy ends up in the one-wear-then-despair pile. No hood: Practicality isn’t completely lost on fashion, which is why we wish this coat had a hood for those frizz-inducing drizzly days. See ya, sleek hair! Difficult to style: Brights are often difficult to pair with your wider wardrobe and, unless you’re addicted to bright colours and big detail, this coat could prove just that. Think hard before pulling the plastic out. Kenzo belted wool-blend felt & chunky-knit coat, £356, available at The Outnet.

New York Fashion Week AW14 highlights from BCBG Max Azria, Coach, Dion Lee & more

Klaxons and party poppers at the ready, Fashion Month has officially begun, so let’s board the virtual plane to the Big Apple to see what New York Fashion Week has to offer! The start of NYFW got off to a flying start, with autumn/winter 2014 collections from BCBG Max Azria, Coach, Dion Lee, Tadashi Shoji and Creatures of the Wind making their way down the catwalks. BCBG Max Azria gave us oversized coats and capes that we wouldn’t turn down in this windy British weather, as well as leather blouses, calfskin blazers and more bold and graphic prints than you can shake a stick at. It’s all about print, pattern, texture and size! Geometric designs were also present on the Dion Lee catwalk, as were smart and sophisticated ensembles that would be perfect for the office. If your office required sartorially chic and savvy employees, obviously. The draped detailing was also a treat for the eyes, too! Tadashi Shoji presented another stunning red carpet worthy autumn/winter 2014 collection – no surprises there – while Creatures of the Wind went for all things pure and cosmic, apparently. Take a look at our highlights from Day 1 of New York Fashion Week below: Tadashi Shoji  Coach Dion Lee Creatures of the Wind

Highlights from the Louis Vuitton prefall 2014 press day

If you thought Louis Vuitton would be in a state of limbo and confusion as it gets over the departure of former creative director Marc Jacobs and eagerly anticipates what new recruit Nicolas Ghesquière has up his sleeve for the French fashion House, then you’re sorely mistaken. Of course MJ will be missed, and of course LV needs creative direction from a fine talent such as Nicolas Ghesquière, but if we’re being honest, we think it did a ruddy good job on the prefall 2014 collection without them. We headed to the Louis Vuitton HQ in New Bond street yesterday to check out the brand spanking new prefall 2014 collection which was designed by the studio team, and we were really impressed with what we saw. It looks like the dark, opulent and somewhat grungy, rocky aesthetic that Marc Jacobs brought out in his final show back in September was a theme which continued throughout the prefall collection; zips, fur, sequins and an abundance of drool-inducing accessorises – we were in lust and love all at the same time! Here are a few of our highlights: A little bit of pink , print, and glamour Did someone say bling? Shoe fetish! Wrapping up warm in style
