Vanessa Hudgens is a Seventies siren in animal print

If Zac Efron had broken up with us, we’d probably be a snivelling mess surviving on wine and snot. Vanessa Hudgens is a trooper, though. Not only has she been hitting the town in LA a lot since their split, she’s been doing it in style. Spotted in West Hollywood last week, the High School Musical star dined at trendy restaurant BOA to celebrate pal and fellow actress Brittany Snow’s 25th birthday, and showing absolutely no sign of a broken heart, she worked the boho chic style she’s become famed for in a leopard print maxi dress. She looked relaxed with her dark locks loosely tied-up and by accessorising with stacks of gold jewellery – we’re totally digging that arm band – and peep-toe platforms, she added a disco glam vibe to the look. Kudos to Vanessa, who’s just inspired our entire summer wardrobe…Zac who? [poll id=”55″]

SS11 trend recap: lady-like lengths and Seventies siren

If yesterday’s trend recap was about crisp, clean zestiness, consider this a lesson in time travel. As fashion gears up for a retro revival next season, it’s time to ditch the leg-flashing hems and put a bounce in your step, because lady-like lengths and Seventies silhouettes are back, and they’re our focus for today’s spring style report. Lady-like lengths It might be the season to shread the layers and flash some skin, but this spring’s following autumn’s lead and is considerably more conservative. With even the coolest of kids eschewing thigh-skimming hems for mid-length calf-swinging shapes, full skirts and ankle-grazers are the order of the season. Take your cue from Marc by Marc Jacobs for a lady-like look, go girly with pleats at Chloe, or opt for a younger, more directional style a la Proenza Schouler. Seventies siren Put on your favourite flares, because after ruling the spring runways, the Seventies are back. With floor-sweeping jumpsuits, maxidresses, peasant blouses, wide-leg trousers, ditsy prints and vibrant colours, next season’s style is nostalgic for the flower power decade. From Marc Jacobs‘ retro hues to House of Holland‘s relaxed glam and Yves Saint Laurent‘s cropped cullottes, get set to revamp your rodeo. [Images: Style.com]

Cinematic Denim: Unforgettable Men’s Fashion Jeans in Films

You might get denim inspiration from the catwalk, social media, or fashion magazines. But a lot of us tend to forget that movies have also played a big role in shaping fashion jeans for men. From film sets to the red carpet, Hollywood’s biggest stars have worn designer jeans for men for decades, inevitably making them a coveted trend. Despite being produced as industrial workwear pants, men’s designer jeans are now a universal wardrobe staple for men all over the world. Fortunately, today we can buy men’s fashion jeans in just about every style, fit, and color from small boutique shops to online men’s trendy clothing stores like Differio.  In the mood to switch up your style with some movie inspo? From men’s colored jeans to summer-ready jorts, here are some unforgettable movies with noteworthy denim moments worth rewatching.  Retro Straight-Fit Jeans in Rebel Without A Cause (1955)  James Dean plays one of the most iconic characters in a distinct ensemble that’s gone down in bad-boy history. Playing the role of troubled Jim Stark, his character is best known for wearing a bright red bomber jacket paired with a white t-shirt and men’s fashion jeans with a straight-leg fit. Long before jeggings were invented, men’s designer jeans from the fifties era were generally made from pure denim textiles without any spandex or elastane.  To recreate this retro look, avoid super-stretchy jeans to stay true to the authenticity of the decade. You’ll want to find trendy men’s jeans in medium-wash denim that run straight from the hips to ankles. Don’t forget to finish the outfit by heavily cuffing the ankles.  Rockabilly Tapered Jeans in Grease (1978) Grease was filled with timeless fashion moments from Olivia Newton’s black spandex pants to John Travolta’s edgy leather jacket. More importantly, the T-birds showcased retro-inspired […]

Planning or Already Have a Pension? Here are 7 Little-Known Factors You Must Know About (#4 Might Surprise You!)

Hopefully, you’ll have put some thought into planning your pension, or you’ll already have started one. If not, you’ll be solely reliant on the State Pension or benefits for your retirement income.  Maximising your pension is critical, and you need to be aware of a few things that affect your pension.  Read on to find out about seven little-known factors that can positively or negatively affect your retirement funds. 1. Your Pension’s Growth Rate Perhaps the most significant factor that determines how much your pension will be worth is its growth rate. It is imperative that you routinely check your pension’s performance so you can assess if it is best to leave your funds where they are or move them elsewhere. Of course, making such an assessment might be better done through a financial professional. You should consider setting up regular pension checks with an advisor to ensure you are not missing out on pension growth. 2. Single or Multiple Funds There are situations where you’ll be better off with your pension split between multiple funds and others when a single consolidated fund will perform best. One advantage of having a consolidated fund is that you will only be paying one set of fees. Another is that you will have a more significant capital amount to which returns will be applied. A disadvantage of moving multiple funds into a single consolidated fund is that any risk to that fund applies to your whole pension. You should seek professional advice before deciding to consolidate your funds. 3. Annual Fees Most pensions have an annual fee attached to them, and the amount you pay varies from fund to fund. What is critical for you to understand is that your pension fund should be growing at a greater rate than the annual fees […]

Tips In Wedding Fashion For Parents

Fashions Always Shift Fashion is a moving target. It’s commonly said that history doesn’t repeat itself, it echoes. Or perhaps it rhymes. The same is true in fashion. What was trendy a hundred years ago isn’t exactly trendy today, but some things have returned. For example, consider the beards men have in 2019. In a large way, facial hair has come back. Consider clothing style. That of the roaring twenties is similar to what is seen today. A sort of neoclassical embrace has made ties and fedoras popular again, as well as the sort of dresses flappers used to wear during prohibition. The theme of your wedding could take on such a new-classic approach. Or it might simply rest on what you like personally. Whatever styles you choose, it’s important that you include this thinking in wardrobe choices for those involved in the wedding party beyond the bride and groom. Maybe you want to put Mom in a gold-themed garment. Maybe you want something less flashy. Regardless, it’s likely that a primary goal will be to keep drama from affecting your wedding. A good way to do that is to plan in advance what kind of fashions your parents will have at the wedding. There are a lot of different ways to go about this, several common themes will be briefly explored below. Modern Styles Modern formal wear looks smart. It looks practical, and oftentimes it is made so that whoever the wearer is, they look excellent. There’s a sort of minimalistic style in a modern dress today. This can be a great way of imparting a feeling of elegance during a ceremony without the adverse expense. However, does a modern style fit the natural style of your parents? A father or mother who insists on hairstyle and grooming conventions […]

2018’s Biggest Casual Wear Trends

Casual wear is sometimes lumped into a category of its own, but even in high fashion it always has its place. The pre-season runways for 2018 were packed with styles, cuts, trends and colours that all translate effortlessly into our leisure wardrobe. If you’re looking to update your approach to casual wear in the new year, here’s a quick rundown of 2018’s biggest trends. Denim According to British Vogue, denim is making a comeback in 2018 in a big way – not that it ever truly left in the first place. Nothing says casual wear quite like denim, but now your favourite blue jeans are practically considered haute couture. Next year’s denim trends encompass absolutely everything, from slouchy jackets to tapered trousers and loose button-ups, so expect to find tonnes of options that are instantly weekend-ready. Colourful trainers Bold, bright colours will be dominating our wardrobes next year, and this extends all the way to casual footwear, too. Colourful women’s trainers are easy on our feet and offer a pop of brightness that makes even the simplest take on casual wear truly stand out. Tu’s selection of trainers showcase not only a selection of vibrant colours, but funky prints too. Shorts Though not quite as versatile as the other trends on this list – you may have to wait until spring and summer before indulging – shorts will play a big part in our 2018 leisure wardrobe. Tailored, high-waisted and even cycling shorts are all expected to return. Even silky, pyjama-style shorts have been deemed acceptable for wearing outside of a slumber party. Wide-leg trousers According to Pinterest’s top beauty and fashion pins for the future, wide-leg trousers came in at number five for big 2018 trends. Culottes and seventies-style bell bottoms were big in 2017, not least due to their ability to combine […]

How To Crack Knitwear This Season!

October is here and despite a brief intermission from the Indian summer department, winter is coming.  It’s time to haul out those layers and re-train our brains in the art of cold weather dressing. From women’s cashmere to Fair Isle, cover up like the best of them this season with our autumn knitwear guide. The Polo Neck *Cashmere Polo Neck Jumper, £150 While the polo neck never officially went out of fashion, it’s safe to say it’s experiencing a fashion revival right now. The surge of 1970s style has transformed the humble polo neck from a faithful wardrobe staple to a hot-off-the-press, sartorial must have. Get it right by layering yours underneath a shift dress, tucking it into an A-line skirt or going the whole hog with the seventies trend and pairing it with – take a deep breath now – flares. The Fair Isle Cardigan *Cashmere Crew Neck Jumper, £95 As Christmas approaches and the novelty jumpers come out for their annual parade, turn to Fair Isle for a classy approach to yuletide dressing. Fair Isle is one of those failsafe patterns that you can’t go wrong with. Plus it evokes scenes of Nordic reindeer and snowflakes which is okay in our book. The whole Scandinavian scene is oh-so in vogue of late. Wear yours open with a plain top, slim-fit jeans and ballet pumps for a cosy yet chic daytime look. The Textured One *Textured Jumper, £30 When you’re reduced to layer upon layer, trying to keep your style credentials intact can be a challenge.  That’s where texture comes into play. This season experiment with bold colours and sequins, faux fur and tweed to give the usual autumnal suspects a new and now edge. Mustard yellow and burgundy are big news colour wise and add a welcome […]

Laura Bailey picks her favourite pieces from the Wallis AW14 collection!

Alexander Wang for H&M isn’t the only collaboration we’re getting excited about this week, oh no. Iconic British model and writer Laura Bailey has teamed up with high street wonder Wallis to put together an edit of new-season pieces that’ll make shopping just that little bit easier for everyone. Wallis has a lot of gorgeous pieces available – the current autumn/winter 2014 collection is probably one of the strongest ones yet – so how did she manage to whittle down her favourites and decide what made the cut? “I work by instinct and desire and know what I love before I even try it on,” the told British Vogue. “I’malways drawn to a slightly Seventies silhouette, grown-up rock chic; masculine tomboy lines softened by a more glamorous aesthetic after dark; nothing too ‘done’.” Sounds like an excellent way to go about it. And that’s exactly the vibe we got when looking at her edit of new-season pieces. Although we can’t fault the collection, there are few stand-out pieces which have caught our eye a little more than others… the berry sequin pencil skirt in particular has us foaming at the mouth! Although it comes in an autumnal colour, there’s no fear of blending into the background or going unnoticed thanks to the bold hue and the glittering fabric. We would team ours (yes, we’ve already ordered it!) with some knee-high boots (preferably with a fiercely high stiletto heel) and tuck a chic top inside. Click here to take a look at all of the pieces Laura Bailey has personally selected. Do you have a favourite? You’re allowed to choose more than one…

Paris Fashion Week SS15 highlights from Elie Saab, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent, and more!

Spring/summer 2015 collections from Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent, Elie Saab and Giambattista Valli hit the Paris Fashion Week catwalks yesterday, so let’s take a look at our highlights… Stella McCartney gave us effortless yet cosy chic with her light, roomy silhouettes found in everything from dresses to jumpsuits, while Saint Laurent was all about the sexiness – and the seventies – with the mismatched floral and leopard prints and multitude of fabrics. Short shorts are a definite must next season according to Hedi Slimane! We were once again mesmerised by what Elie Saab had to offer – this time choosing the deep blue sea as his inspiration for the show. Oceanic colours from aquamarine to coral were in abundance, and lace, sparkles and exquisite embroidery were plentiful. Take a look at all of yesterday’s PFW highlights below: Elie Saab Stella McCartney Giambattista Valli Saint Laurent

Alexa Chung collaborates with AG Jeans on a denim collection!

It’s been a few weeks since we posted that Alexa Chung beauty tutorial YouTube video, which means you’ve probably perfected her signature eye flick by now. Well, now we are giving you the chance to dress your lower body like her too, as it’s just been announced that she will be launching her very own denim collection. Squeal! Alexa Chung, who seldom fails to look incredible in a pair of jeans or anything made from the denim material for that matter, will be teaming up with AG Jeans for a limited edition 20-piece collection of jeans, dungarees and denim dresses. “The collection is inherently the missing pieces of my dream denim wardrobe, which, as ever, is predominantly inspired by a late Sixties, early Seventies aesthetic,” she said. That’s right, we can expect pieces inspired by those very fashionable decades, in colours such as the classic Wrangler and Lee shades of blue, as well as “palest pink, cream, rusty red and]washed army green.” Certainly sounds like she knows what she wants! She even visited the 400,000 square foot factory for maximum research and inspiration… “I found the trip incredibly inspiring and an opportunity to learn about denim and make things I had been dreaming about finding,” she added. We genuinely can’t wait for this collection to become available. Stay tuned for more info – especially some pictures, hopefully! – as and when we get it! This has definitely been a long time coming. Louis Vuitton’s Julie de Libran in at Sonia Rykiel!

Looks like we will be paying extra close attention to Sonia Rykiel next season, as former Louis Vuitton womenswear studio designer Julie de Libran has just been announced as the new artistic director of the label. “She was such a powerful woman and she created such a style,” she said of Sonia Rykiel. “I liked that she was a woman designing for women. She was as important for me as Saint Laurent in the Seventies. “I’m confident. I just want to make beautiful, desirable clothes. I think there’s a space. There’s also so much to do in shoes and accessories.” No arguments there! Julie de Libran has previously worked with Miuccia Prada and Versace among others, and left Louis Vuitton shortly after Marc Jacobs announced his departure. We can’t wait to see what she brings to the Sonia Rykiel table! [WWD] [Image]

Gisele slips into her white bikini for new H&M ads, sings Blondie

Gorgeous Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen is back for H&M, showcasing her flawless and enviable bronzed body in some new-season pieces of swimwear. The new H&M ad campaigns were shot in Costa Rica (jealous,  much?) and have a serious nod to bohemian seventies glamour! As well as showing off her incredible body and H&M’s finest new pieces, Gisele also treats us to her very own rendition of Blondie’s Heart of Glass, produced by the very talented French music producer and DJ Bob Sinclar. “I never in a million years thought that I would record a song and to work with a producer like Bob,” Gisele said. We know that Gisele has a pretty sweet voice too, thanks to her rendition of the popular Kinks song All Day and All of the Night which she recorded last year. The song will be available to download from May, with all of the proceeds going to UNICEF to help vulnerable children. The print and outdoor campaign will also break in May; we can’t wait! [WWD]

LFW AW14 highlights from Zoe Jordan, Osman, Meadham Kirchhoff & more

Yesterday was the final day of London Fashion Week for yet another season; talk about time flying when you’re having fun! The designers showcasing their autumn/winter 2014 collections in the Capital City didn’t give fashionistas time to relax though,  as the shows were just as lively and attention-grabbing as ever! Zoe Jordan, Osman, Meadham Kirchhoff and Simone Rocha helped us say goodbye to another season of London Fashion Week in style; they certainly went out with a bang! Zoe Jordan AW14  We wouldn’t miss a Zoe Jordan LFW catwalk show or presentation. As a Young British Designer, her collections are what make London Fashion Week what it is; London stands out from the rest of the cities as we get behind exciting, young talent every season, and Zoe Jordan is living proof of that. The designer presented a Formula 1 influenced collection this season – we did wonder when she would use her Formula 1 team boss dad Eddie as inspiration – something the white tyres stacked in the windows definitely gave away even before we saw the collection. With garments that would feel right at home on the bodies of motorsport fans and participants alike, Zoe Jordan presented a definitive Chicane sports luxe collection by way of a fabulous and well-thought-out presentation. We love a well staged show but presentations let you get up close and personal with the pieces, which is something we definitely appreciated with this collection as it helped us appreciate every intricate little detail. Quilted leathers and simple sporting basics were in abundance to make up a boyish, elegant collection; make-up was kept minimal but fresh to correspond with and complement the sporty aesthetic of the clothes. Another winner from a LFW fave! Simone Rocha AW14 Simone Rocha once again proved that innovative style runs […]

Is anyone really fit to replace Anna Wintour?

You might consider our proposition insane, if somewhat impossible, but it could totally happen. If the “new” age for women retiring in the UK is realistically lingering in the seventies, then Anna Wintour isn’t too far off. At 64, the impeccably bobbed, Manolo-clad Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue faultlessly oozes that polished glamour so many of us can only dream of inhaling from the printer-fresh pages of our monthly subscription Yet, what begins must end, and recent rumours speculating Wintour’s retirement have got the style set buzz-chatting – some with confusion, others with a glimmer of excitement at whom might be deemed worthy to take the helm of the world’s grandest fashion institution. So, instead of suffering sleepless, sweaty nights figuring out what will happen to the physical impression Anna has left on her regular FROW spot – if she ever decides to hang up that Prada fur coat – we’ve gathered our heavy-hearted thoughts and picked out five possible replacements. Yes, human replacements, not some page-flicking robot with impossible-to-attain hair. Having said that, who knows what the future holds? The WAG-turned-wardrobe queen: Victoria Beckham Churning out winning runway ensemble, season-on-season, VB knows a thing or two about what makes winning fashion editorial content. It doesn’t hurt that she’s permanently well-dressed, backed up by a good-looking brood and a super-successful, hunk-in-pants husband. Her consistency, business-meet-fashion discipline and taste for luxury could easily put her in the pool of potentials. Carries comes to life: Sarah Jessica Parker Hey, hey! Wintour’s bestie (they enjoy “private dinners” on the regular), Sarah Jessica Parker, is possibly the closest suspect we’ll get to having an A-lister take the reigns after Anna. Although the actress has denied all rumours about replacing the powerful editor-in-chief, they do share a love for fashion fundraisers, Manolos and pretty dresses. Kate Boss. Not Moss: She’s […]

Our top picks from Sarah Jessica Parker’s shoe collection

It’s here! Finally every single piece from Sarah Jessica Parker’s debut shoe collection has been unveiled, and it looks like we are going to have a very hard time choosing which styles to snap up when they go on sale next month. Either that, or February is going to be a very expensive month indeed… The collection is comprised of a variety of different styled shoes, from T-bars to silettos to wedges to foot-friendly flip-flops and more – all of which have been inspired by her life in some shape or form. “I’ve taken inspiration from things in my life such as the grosgrain ribbons I tied in my hair as a girl, to the flower accents from the Sex and the City wardrobe, to references to classic styles from the late Seventies and early Eighties,” Sarah Jessica Parker said. “I’m a firm believer in quality and timelessness and have created this collection with the hopes that women will love wearing it for years to come.” Ah, a girl after our own hearts! The collection will be available at Nordstrom stores and online on February 28th. Take a look at our five favourite shoes from the collection below and let us know what you think! [Vogue]

Staying Stylish on the Slopes

The ski season is finally here! If you’re hitting the slopes in the next few months you’ll want to know how you can stay warm and dry whilst also staying on top of the latest trends. The basic stuff Before we start looking at styles it’s important to outline that there are certain essentials that you have to wear whilst skiing or else you will freeze! You will need to wear layers under your ski jacket – normally some kind of thermal, another thin layer and a warm, insulating outer layer like a fleece or jumper. Remember that if you stop for a break or lunch you’ll probably be taking your jacket off so people will see this layer. You’ll also need gloves, a hat and goggles (you won’t need them every day, depending on the weather, but you should have them available) and ski socks as a minimum and something warm to snuggle up in in the evenings, like a cuddly onesie! The fun stuff In the past few years ski attire has really stepped up and now it’s easy to find a ski jacket that will cater for all the practical needs you require on the slopes and make you look good. Whether you want to embrace the street style set by snowboarders or keep things sophisticated with furs and simple colours there are plenty of options out there. This jacket from The North Face is the perfect example of a timeless, elegant ski jacket which will stay fashionable for a number of seasons. Sypder have put together a similar faux fur jacket which could easily double up as a warm option on a chilly day in the city. If you want something which reflects the street style that the slopes are starting to embrace then try something […]

Steep vs.Cheap: The black jumpsuit

Party season is officially here, and we can’t think of a worse situation than being in a style stitch! Rummaging through your wardrobe to find that perfect piece to impress at the office party? Or, maybe you’re planning a big night on the tiles with your BFFs, and can’t quite figure out a dance floor-worthy look? Fret not, because the LBD’s archrival – the jumpsuit – is here to save the day! A welcome update on the party dress; we think the jumpsuit rocks our night out wardrobe on so many levels. Easy to wear, and even easier to style, it’s part slick Seventies siren and part girl who wants to dodge the thigh skimming number for winter. And, given were always busy hunting the best buys for you to shop right now, we’ve tracked down two gorgeous jumpsuits to suit either end of the budget spectrum. In at the designer end is the gorgeous Valentino embellished wool and silk-blend jumpsuit, £3,145. Although the price tag screams ‘OUCH,’ if you’re looking to make a lifelong investment, this jumpsuit’s the one. Everything from the subtly tapered fit to the white leather embellished bib front ensures it’ll become your permanent party buddy (and the envy of all your friends). Not got just over three grand to hand? Thought so! But that doesn’t meant you have to miss out on the leg action when it comes to jumping into a jumpsuit (pun intended) before hailing your cab for the night. Snap up an equally stylish version at high street haunt, Mango, for £69.99 – a snip of the price! The tuxedo-style jumpsuit has an air of YSL’s Le Smoking about it, and we’re wearing ours with a crimson pout and sky high heels. So, what will it be: splurge or save? Steep: Valentino […]

Paris Fashion Week SS14 highlights from Elie Saab, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent & more

Another day at Paris Fashion Week, and the likes of Elie Saab, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent, Giambattista Valli and Emanuel Ungaro all presented their spring/summer 2014 collections. As we are huge fans of highly glamorous red carpet worthy dresses, Elie Saab is always one of our most highly anticipated shows on the Fashion Month calendar… and luckily, the Lebanese designer didn’t stray from his usual ultra glam aesthetic for his spring/summer 2014 collection. His models floated down the runway in his effortlessly beautiful and intricate dresses which were comprised mainly of delicate lace and sexy Chantilly lace, and also strutted their stuff in panelled jumpsuits, fierce minis, floral pieces and even a seventies-inspired halter neck dress. We know that Stella McCartney likes to dabble in sportswear (being very active herself and also collaborating with Adidas) and that was definitely translated in her spring/summer 2014 collection. Sporty pieces with a masculine meets feminine theme were running strong throughout the very wearable and very versatile collection.  Favourites include the cap sleeve crocodile print dresses, organza dresses, layered zip detail dresses, and some stunning trouser suit combos. Handbags were held under the arm a’ la Victoria Beckham! Over at Saint Laurent, Kanye West’s best pal (not!) Hedi Slimane presented what can only be described as a versatile and courageous collection. It lacked a strong, possessing theme which his previous outings had, which means that he is less about defining the Saint Laurent brand and putting his stamp on it and more about having fun with it and experimenting. Both Hedi Slimane and the Saint Laurent Paris label are growing up and growing into their new roles; this is Saint Laurent as you’ve never seen it! Milan Fashion Week SS14 highlights from Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, DSquared2 and more

Two cities down, two more to go. We’ve waved goodbye to London Fashion Week (it was an emotional, action-packed, unforgettable five days!), so it’s now it’s time to focus our attention onto the catwalks and designers of Milan Fashion Week. And the collections showing on the first day of MFW included Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, DSquared2 and Luisa Beccaria. Alberta Ferretti took flower power to a whole new level, and went beyond her signature softness that we associate her collections with. Although there were minimal feminine pastels in floaty romantic pieces which opened the show, they were juxtaposed with vibrant, bold shades and patterns as the show went on, proving that she is stepping out of her comfort zone and branching into more vivid and adventurous territory. Blake Lively, the face of Gucci Premiere, was of course present on the front row for the fashion House’s spring/summer 2014 show, and we definitely think she eyed up a few potential red carpet outfits from the selection that came out on the runway. Or maybe even gym outfits, as the collection had a somewhat sporty aesthetic to it. Backless garments were once again very prominent on this catwalk (it was a recurring theme in New York and in London this season), as were loose-fitting dresses and seventies inspired silhouettes. Gucci DSquared2 Luisa Beccaria

London Fashion Week SS14 Day 2 highlights

Less rain and even more excitement for Day 2 of London Fashion Week! Here are a few of our highlights from the spring/summer 2014 collections showcased: Zoe Jordan was worth getting out of bed and braving the rain for, as the designer presented a clean, chic, predominantly pastel collection with attitude. Sporty yet chic and feminine; the skater styles were a particular favourite, which just goes to show that you can do grunge the feminine and effortless way, too. Who needs catwalk shows when you have a cute, private little show space to do whatever you want with? Orla Kiely has once again exceeded all expectations with her spring/summer 2014 offering, showing an instantly loveable and wearable 70s safari themed collection. From the Moonrise Kingdom references to the soundtrack to the giraffe prints on the dresses – there was no mistaking the theme or inspiration of this collection. It was all about the “p”s over at Ashley Isham – Perspex, precision and PVC. Block colours are back, but with the added bonus of sparkle; and trust us – sparkle is always a bonus! Hair and make-up at Holly Fulton was inspired by the seventies – there’s something very Saved by the Bell about it – while the clothes themselves were reminiscent of an era of the past with a futuristic twist. Akin to some of the other collections this season, pleats were prominent, as were geometric prints and denim. The slight bondage theme was also apparent at Mark Fast, although it was bondage meets bandage meets grungy goth cyber chick all under one stylishly monochrome and neon umbrella. If you wanted fierce black hair and make-up, Mark Fast was the place to be! Julien Macdonald Strictly Come Dancing‘s newest recruit Julien Macdonald presented yet another lust-worthy collection comprised of fierce and ultra-glamorous […]

Gucci’s Frida Giannini designs Olivia Wilde’s Rush costumes

Olivia Wilde’s brand new film Rush – about Formula 1 in 1976 and directed by the Academy Award winning Ron Howard, fyi – just got that little bit more glamorous thanks to its new costume designer. Gucci’s very own Frida Giannini has got on board, and has been exploring both Formula 1 and 1970s archives to find inspiration for Olivia Wilde and costar Chris Hemsworth’s costumes. “The style of Suzy Miller (Olivia’s character) is the essence of Gucci as it captures the mixture of sexy allure and innocent naturalness that defined the style of the time,” she said. “The Seventies has always been a decade that has inspired me greatly, so it was extremely exciting to be asked by Ron Howard to help design wardrobes for RUSH. It is hard to think of a more glamorous profession than being a racing driver in the Seventies. The sketches are making us very excited, so we can’t wait to see the finished pieces. [Grazia]

First look: Carla Bruni Sarkozy’s Bulgari jewellery ad campaign

We told you back in March that France’s former First Lady had been tapped to front a Bulgari ad campaign… and here it is in all its glory! Carla Bruni Sarkozy plays the part of the “diva” in the ad campaign images that were shot by Terry Richardson; and even though she is no stranger to modelling, this in fact the first jewellery brand she has actually posed for. “Bulgari is for me the symbol of passion and of this vivid and colourful Roman gaiety,” she said. “Like the stones of the Seventies bracelet that my aunt wore when I was a child. I loved that bracelet. I loved its joy, its fantasy – I dreamed of one day possessing such a wonder of my own! I was told that, like me, it came from Italy to Paris. Perhaps that was part of why I loved it too.” Bulgari’s Diva haute joaillerie collection were inspired by Roman Dolce Vita hedonism with a modern twist. Do you like Carla Bruni’s stint as a jewellery model? We think she was pretty pleased with the project too – that smile does not lie! [Sassi Sam]

Sarah Jessica Parker launching SJP shoe collection

Sarah Jessica Parker will be making alter ego Carrie Bradshaw green with envy, as it’s being reported that she will be designing a shoe collection entitled SJP. Short, simple, and to the point! This is ruddy fantastic news, but what took her so long, eh? SJP will be collaborating with George Malkemus, the CEO of Manolo Blahnik, and the collection will feature flats and heels ranging from £130 to £190, and handbags around the £450 mark. Not too steep – we like it! “In a silly way, I think it’s what people have expected of me most because of Carrie Bradshaw,” Sarah said. “We’re putting new colours together that people don’t typically do, just beautiful combinations that you wish existed in your closet. “And in terms of bags, thinking about that period of the Seventies into the Eighties, what those women were carrying, taking away the bells and the whistles and hardware and really making it about the bag.” We can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve. The collection will be available exclusively at Nordstrom from next year. Excited? [E! Online]

Charlotte Casiraghi returns for Gucci’s third Forever Now campaign

Gucci has marked the start of a new year by releasing the third set of images from Charlotte Casiraghi’s Forever Now ad campaign. This time round, Grace Kelly’s granddaughter was photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott – if you cast your minds back to last year you may remember that Peter Lindbergh and Inez and  Vinoodh shot the first two. The third offering is just as stunning as the previous two, and the 26-year-old Royal can be seen staring intensely into the camera while holding a gorgeous silk scarf in Gucci’s iconic Flora pattern. “Today, Flora has become a symbol of the Gucci woman’s effortless fusion of tradition and contemporary poise,” said Gucci creative director Frida Giannini. “The print holds special meaning to me — I first discovered the scarf when my mother and grandmother would wear theirs during my childhood in the Seventies.” The Flora scarf should hold a special place in Charlotte’s heart too, as the pattern was created by Italian artist Vittorio Accornero, which was based on the scarf that Rodolfo Gucci (son Guccio Gucci) gave Grace Kelly back in 1966. Talk about nostalgia! Do you like the third Forever Now ad campaign? Is it your favourite so far? [Grazia]

Re-introducing the Onesie: Here are our top 5 picks!

When it comes to loungewear, every fashion bod with a discerning eye for style makes concessions. Well, who wouldn’t after witnessing the super-snug existence of the onesie! Verging on fashion’s alternative to Marmite, you’re bound to share a love-hate relationship with the onesie and find yourself asking this repeatedly: Is it appropriate? Is it an adult babygrow? Answer: Yes. But do take its revival with a pinch of salt! Justin Bieber, Rihanna and One(sie) Direction (geddit?) are all fans of the onesie, and even the D-listers, namely the TOWIE cast, have been getting in on the one-piece action. But before you’re swept into the cosy world of onesie-wearing, let’s get some fashion facts straight. Although it maybe all-enveloping, do not mistake the onesie for a jumpsuit! The former is for the potato couch within you who thinks nothing of surviving a weekend on microwave popcorn and watching re-runs of Come Dine with Me whilst scoffing stuffed crust pizza. The latter is to be worn with heels to events that demand a chic overspill of the Seventies. Considering you’re going to be lounging around in it all day, opting for bright colours and wacky prints won’t hurt your style cred, so take a look through our top five picks for a little inspiration and plan that grown up slumber party pronto! 1. Le Breve candy pink lightweight onesie, £69.99 2. Soul Cal Deluxe Fair Isle onesie, £50 3. Grey coloured tiger print onesie, £30 4. Onepiece Nordic pattern onesie, £139 5. Ellie knitted contrast hood striped onesie, £30

Paris Fashion Week SS13 highlights – Part 4

Hakaan drama aside, Paris Fashion Week has continued to go on without a hitch, as gorgeous collections from Stella McCartney, Chloe, Givenchy and Chanel recently made their way down the runway. We even had Hedi Slimane’s debut collection for Saint Laurent Paris (formerly YSL) to look forward to. Paris Fashion Week isn’t Paris Fashion Week without a lavish Chanel show at the Grand Palais. We sometimes think there are only so many ways one can rework the iconic tweed jacket, but every season Karl Lagerfeld seems to find something new. Kaiser Karl has once again excelled, putting on a flawless collection that is the perfect mix of classic Chanel and modern, contemporary femininity. And as self-confessed bag addicts, we were particularly drawn to the pieces of arm and shoulder candy this season, especially the hula-hoop and leg-inspired bags. The oversized pearls also went down quite well with us – we do love statement bling! Elsewhere in Paris, the Chloe and Giambattista Valli shows took place, once again reiterating what we said about exaggerated silhouettes being key to the new season. Even though this isn’t a Couture collection, we kind of expected some big, bold and beautiful dresses to come out towards the end of the Giambattista Valli show (after all, they are the designer’s forte) but that didn’t happen this time round. Still, Giambattista’s exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail is still evident even in the simplest of pieces, which proves just why he gained that all-impotant Haute Couture appellation so early on. Well played! We’ve been waiting for Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent debut ever since he joined the fashion House, and although this isn’t what we were expecting, we were quite impressed with what he managed to cook up. Akin to a lot of collections at Paris Fashion Week, Hedi’s […]

Milan Fashion Week SS13 highlights – Part 2

We know it’s early days as we still have the rest of Milan Fashion Week and the whole of Paris Fashion Week to look forward to, but we are declaring Moschino one of our favourite collections of the season (so far). Moschino presented somewhat of a “space-age meets sixties and seventies” collection, with more colourful, floral, vivid pieces than you can shake a stick at. The collection went from one extreme to the other in terms of colour (or lack thereof) as in amongst the bright floral pieces were chic monochrome ones that would be totally at home in Karl Lagerfeld’s personal wardrobe. It was also all about the flower power and complex cuts and silhouettes for Prada’s spring/summer 2013 catwalk outing too. The collection appears to have been relatively Japanese inspired if the kitsch, cute, elevated floral embellishments on the garments, silk kimono-style pieces and geisha-red lips on the models are anything to go by. And on a separate note, how Iris Apfel are those glasses on the third model above? Amazing! We’re not too sure where the metallic socks fit in though. A predominantly monochrome colour palette with a bit of bold red thrown in for good measure – how can you go wrong with something so timeless and classic?! Today is a busy day for the Italian fashionistas, as the likes of Versace, Versus and Just Cavalli will be showing their spring/summer 2013 offerings so stay tuned for more updates!

Karlie Kloss for British Vogue’s September issue… yay or nay?

You must know by now that we utterly adore American teen model Karlie Kloss; therefore it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that her British Vogue September issue was one of our most hotly anticipated mag covers of the month. However, we were sadly a little disappointed with the fashion Bible’s cover for the all-important September issue, which also happens to be the “biggest fashion issue ever”. Exciting stuff! Karlie was shot by Nick Knight, and is sporting a very bright, seventies-inspired look on the cover; we don’t know whether it’s a recurring theme in the editorial shoot too, but we’ll keep you posted nonetheless. We like what the mag was trying to do with the colour explosion (we all love our brights!) but aren’t overly keen on the clashing colours or the over-contrasting on Karlie’s face; perhaps less Photoshopping would have made the cover less loud? When all is said and done though, we will 100% be purchasing this when it hits the shelves – it is the September issue of the fashion Bible after all!

What we snapped at the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2013 press day

Armed with a brolley (nothing was going to keep us away!) we headed to Churchill House in New Bond Street to perve over Louis Vuitton’s brand new Cruise 2013 collection in person. Unlike most Cruise collections, where the motto is usually along the lines of “the skimpier the better”, the Louis Vuitton offering is far more subtle and understated. Basically, it doesn’t matter how hot the weather is (a problem we don’t really have to worry about here in Blighty – ha!) it’s still encouraged to dress in a chic and not too revealing manner. Although you’d think layering is the way forward for the autumn/winter season, it was in fact the base of the Louis Vuitton Crusie collection too. The colour palette was also somewhat relaxed and unconventional too; our favourite items of clothing included a navy blue evening dress and a red leather tunic dress.  It’s also a little bit sixties and seventies in some places – the platform shoes with the psychedelic print gave that away! Of course our favourite part of any Louis Vuitton collection is the range of handbags, and lo and behold, we found ourselves practically salivating at the sight of the new pieces of arm candy on offer. We were very pleased to see the return of the Speedy and Neverfull bags which were in cute shades of caramel and pink, although we wouldn’t have said no to a wider selection of colours! We expected some more brightly coloured bags in the Cruise collection, but we were more than happy with the selection on show. If you follow us on Twitter, you may recall us being particularly fond of a certain turquoise bag… isn’t it adorable? The accessories were particularly wow-some too, as you can see below. We think the necklace is going […]

2 ways to wear this season’s smock top

Forget ‘It’ shoes and bags, this season it’s all about the new ‘It’ top. The smock top is a brilliantly stylish investment, because its versatility means it can be dressed up or down. In line with this season’s relaxed bohemian vibe with a city slick edge, we love the Fifi Fleur smock top from high street fashion favourite, French Connection. A touch on Seventies glamour, the Fifi Fleur smock top in white is our top pick for summer (natch), and we absolutely love the airy crepe fabric, the scattered embroidered floral pattern and the fact that we can get two wears out of one top! A laid back top need not translate as day off gear, however. Throw in a pair of hot-right-now printed trousers and look-at-me espadrilles, and the Fifi Fleur smock top can be smart enough to sport to the office. Or, if you want to stay true to the nonchalance the smock top was made to exude, then slip into some chino shorts and flat sandals for a breezy take on summer strolling in the city. However you choose to wear it, make sure for summer you add a smock top to your sunny weather wardrobe – it’ll prove to be as wear-effective as it looks hot, we promise! For a little inspiration on how to wear the smock top, check out styling tips below. Who said coloured jeans were dead? Here are our faves!

Last Summer, the colour blocking trend saw us sporting bright hues all over. Even the humble jean got a colourful makeover, with bright jeans becoming one of summer 2011’s biggest hits. Then, as the evenings drew in and the colder months arrived, we swapped our crayola-coloured jeans for the more autumn-appropriate colour combinations of  trusty dark denims. This season, the bright jean is back, this time in pretty pastels and fabulous fluros, with everything from the trusty skinny jean to the seventies flare sporting a splash of colour. Best of 2011: Top 5 shoegasms

Best of 2011: Kate Middleton’s year in style

Whether you love her or loathe her (and we don’t believe you if you do the latter), 2011 owes itself solely to one woman: Kate Middleton. Though her style remains distinctly average in our book (string us up and hang us for treason), there’s no denying the effect the Duchess of Cambridge has had on the world. And, since everything she wears sells out in seconds, the fashion brands she favours have got a lot to thank her for. Like everyone else, we’re kind of intrigued with her influence, so we’ve trawled through Kate’s best looks from this year to see her rise from pauper (ha!) to Princess in pictures, which has lead us to the following conclusions: 1) she’s a mega-fan of the high street, 2) she only wears a handful of designers and regurgitates them as necessary, 3) June was a particularly good month. Without further ado, here’s her year in style… January: Reiss Kate wears a Reiss ‘Nanette’ dress for her official engagement photos shot by Mario Testino, and the hysteria begins. April: Alexander McQueen Just another white dress. We’re kidding! Kate gets married in a jaw-dropping Alexander McQueen dress designed by Sarah Burton and the world stops in its tracks. April: Zara The new Duchess of Cambridge steps out the day after her wedding in another high street dress, this time from Zara. The world applauds her for remaining the peoples’ Princess despite being an official royal. May: Reiss Kate meets Michelle Obama for the first time; everyone gets excited about the pair’s fashion politics. Kate opts for another Reiss dress, nude in colour with a boxy neckline and panelled waistband. June: Jenny Packham Her first charity gala since getting married and Kate opts for a glistening champagne-pink gown by Jenny Packham, which skims the floor […]

Our guide to shopping the Christmas sales

Some of you will be so wrapped up in Christmas presents this morning you’ll have barely remembered the Boxing day sales have started… who are we kidding? Any seasoned shopper worth her wardrobe will have set her alarm especially early this morning to sift out the savviest steals the stores have got to offer! But a sale should never be approached without a thorough plan of what’s worth stashing up on and what’s not worth the 15-people queue, and since you’ve been so busy buying presents and preparing the turkey, we’ve made one for you. With tips on what’s worth its weight in gold and what to avoid at all costs, follow our steps below to the do’s and don’t’s of Christmas sale shopping… DO buy anything floral. It’s a perennial favourite that’ll prove super versatile come spring. DON’T buy rich, boozy colours. We may have gulped them up this winter, but come next season we’ll be looking for a brighter beverage. DO buy into neon. A hot pink tee here, a fluro-striped skirt there – it’s spring’s favourite fad, and since you won’t be wearing them forever, it makes sense to snap them up cheap. DON’T buy jewel tones. Autumn loves a deep, punchy palette, but next season’s all about the softer shades. On that note, DO buy pastels for reasons above. DON’T buy heritage tweeds. Tailoring comes much softer next spring, and unless you’re a country bumpkin, it’s time to pack away the posh past. DO buy pleated skirts. We saw them everywhere from Celine to Burberry, making them spring’s key skirt shape. DON’t buy Dalmatian print. Autumn might have loved this trend, but next season there’s not a dog’s dot in sight. DO buy anything striped, especially bottoms. Pyjama pants are spring’s soft alternative to tailored trousers. […]
