Alexander Wang for H&M isn’t the only collaboration we’re getting excited about this week, oh no. Iconic British model and writer Laura Bailey has teamed up with high street wonder Wallis to put together an edit of new-season pieces that’ll make shopping just that little bit easier for everyone. Wallis has a lot of gorgeous pieces available – the current autumn/winter 2014 collection is probably one of the strongest ones yet – so how did she manage to whittle down her favourites and decide what made the cut? “I work by instinct and desire and know what I love before I even try it on,” the told British Vogue. “I’malways drawn to a slightly Seventies silhouette, grown-up rock chic; masculine tomboy lines softened by a more glamorous aesthetic after dark; nothing too ‘done’.” Sounds like an excellent way to go about it. And that’s exactly the vibe we got when looking at her edit of new-season pieces. Although we can’t fault the collection, there are few stand-out pieces which have caught our eye a little more than others… the berry sequin pencil skirt in particular has us foaming at the mouth! Well, now we are giving you the chance to dress your lower body like her too, as it’s just been announced that she will be launching her very own denim collection. Squeal! Alexa Chung, who seldom fails to look incredible in a pair of jeans or anything made from the denim material for that matter, will be teaming up with AG Jeans for a limited edition 20-piece collection of jeans, dungarees and denim dresses. “The collection is inherently the missing pieces of my dream denim wardrobe, which, as ever, is predominantly inspired by a late Sixties, early Seventies aesthetic,” she said. That’s right, we can expect pieces inspired by those very fashionable decades, in colours such as the classic Wrangler and Lee shades of blue, as well as “palest pink, cream, rusty red and]washed army green.” Certainly sounds like she knows what she wants! Looks like we will be paying extra close attention to Sonia Rykiel next season, as former Louis Vuitton womenswear studio designer Julie de Libran has just been announced as the new artistic director of the label. “She was such a powerful woman and she created such a style,” she said of Sonia Rykiel. “I liked that she was a woman designing for women. She was as important for me as Saint Laurent in the Seventies. “I’m confident. I just want to make beautiful, desirable clothes. I think there’s a space. As a Young British Designer, her collections are what make London Fashion Week what it is; London stands out from the rest of the cities as we get behind exciting, young talent every season, and Zoe Jordan is living proof of that. The designer presented a Formula 1 influenced collection this season – we did wonder when she would use her Formula 1 team boss dad Eddie as inspiration – something the white tyres stacked in the windows definitely gave away even before we saw the collection. The ski season is finally here! If you’re hitting the slopes in the next few months you’ll want to know how you can stay warm and dry whilst also staying on top of the latest trends. Another day at Paris Fashion Week, and the likes of Elie Saab, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent, Giambattista Valli and Emanuel Ungaro all presented their spring/summer 2014 collections. As we are huge fans of highly glamorous red carpet worthy dresses, Elie Saab is always one of our most highly anticipated shows on the Fashion Month calendar… and luckily, the Lebanese designer didn’t stray from his usual ultra glam aesthetic for his spring/summer 2014 collection. His models floated down the runway in his effortlessly beautiful and intricate dresses which were comprised mainly of delicate lace and sexy Chantilly lace, and also strutted their stuff in panelled jumpsuits, fierce minis, floral pieces and even a seventies-inspired halter neck dress. We know that Stella McCartney likes to dabble in sportswear (being very active herself and also collaborating with Adidas) and that was definitely translated in her spring/summer 2014 collection. Sporty pieces with a masculine meets feminine theme were running strong throughout the very wearable and very versatile collection. Favourites include the cap sleeve crocodile print dresses, organza dresses, layered zip detail dresses, and some stunning trouser suit combos. Handbags were held under the arm a’ la Victoria Beckham! Over at Saint Laurent, Kanye West’s best pal (not!) Hedi Slimane presented what can only be described as a versatile and courageous collection. Two cities down, two more to go. We’ve waved goodbye to London Fashion Week (it was an emotional, action-packed, unforgettable five days!), so it’s now it’s time to focus our attention onto the catwalks and designers of Milan Fashion Week. And the collections showing on the first day of MFW included Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, DSquared2 and Luisa Beccaria. Alberta Ferretti took flower power to a whole new level, and went beyond her signature softness that we associate her collections with. Although there were minimal feminine pastels in floaty romantic pieces which opened the show, they were juxtaposed with vibrant, bold shades and patterns as the show went on, proving that she is stepping out of her comfort zone and branching into more vivid and adventurous territory. Blake Lively, the face of Gucci Premiere, was of course present on the front row for the fashion House’s spring/summer 2014 show, and we definitely think she eyed up a few potential red carpet outfits from the selection that came out on the runway. Less rain and even more excitement for Day 2 of London Fashion Week! Here are a few of our highlights from the spring/summer 2014 collections showcased: Zoe Jordan was worth getting out of bed and braving the rain for, as the designer presented a clean, chic, predominantly pastel collection with attitude. Sporty yet chic and feminine; the skater styles were a particular favourite, which just goes to show that you can do grunge the feminine and effortless way, too. Who needs catwalk shows when you have a cute, private little show space to do whatever you want with? Orla Kiely has once again exceeded all expectations with her spring/summer 2014 offering, showing an instantly loveable and wearable 70s safari themed collection. From the Moonrise Kingdom references to the soundtrack to the giraffe prints on the dresses – there was no mistaking the theme or inspiration of this collection. It was all about the “p”s over at Ashley Isham – Perspex, precision and PVC. Block colours are back, but with the added bonus of sparkle; and trust us – sparkle is always a bonus! Hair and make-up at Holly Fulton was inspired by the seventies – there’s something very Saved by the Bell about it – while the clothes themselves were reminiscent of an era of the past with a futuristic twist. Akin to some of the other collections this season, pleats were prominent, as were geometric prints and denim. The slight bondage theme was also apparent at Mark Fast, although it was bondage meets bandage meets grungy goth cyber chick all under one stylishly monochrome and neon umbrella. Olivia Wilde’s brand new film Rush – about Formula 1 in 1976 and directed by the Academy Award winning Ron Howard, fyi – just got that little bit more glamorous thanks to its new costume designer. Gucci’s very own Frida Giannini has got on board, and has been exploring both Formula 1 and 1970s archives to find inspiration for Olivia Wilde and costar Chris Hemsworth’s costumes. “The style of Suzy Miller (Olivia’s character) is the essence of Gucci as it captures the mixture of sexy allure and innocent naturalness that defined the style of the time,” she said. “The Seventies has always been a decade that has inspired me greatly, so it was extremely exciting to be asked by Ron Howard to help design wardrobes for RUSH. We told you back in March that France’s former First Lady had been tapped to front a Bulgari ad campaign… and here it is in all its glory! Carla Bruni Sarkozy plays the part of the “diva” in the ad campaign images that were shot by Terry Richardson; and even though she is no stranger to modelling, this in fact the first jewellery brand she has actually posed for. “Bulgari is for me the symbol of passion and of this vivid and colourful Roman gaiety,” she said. “Like the stones of the Seventies bracelet that my aunt wore when I was a child. This is ruddy fantastic news, but what took her so long, eh? Gucci has marked the start of a new year by releasing the third set of images from Charlotte Casiraghi’s Forever Now ad campaign. This time round, Grace Kelly’s granddaughter was photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott – if you cast your minds back to last year you may remember that Peter Lindbergh and Inez and Vinoodh shot the first two. The third offering is just as stunning as the previous two, and the 26-year-old Royal can be seen staring intensely into the camera while holding a gorgeous silk scarf in Gucci’s iconic Flora pattern. “Today, Flora has become a symbol of the Gucci woman’s effortless fusion of tradition and contemporary poise,” said Gucci creative director Frida Giannini. “The print holds special meaning to me — I first discovered the scarf when my mother and grandmother would wear theirs during my childhood in the Seventies.” The Flora scarf should hold a special place in Charlotte’s heart too, as the pattern was created by Italian artist Vittorio Accornero, which was based on the scarf that Rodolfo Gucci (son Guccio Gucci) gave Grace Kelly back in 1966. Hakaan drama aside, Paris Fashion Week has continued to go on without a hitch, as gorgeous collections from Stella McCartney, Chloe, Givenchy and Chanel recently made their way down the runway. We even had Hedi Slimane’s debut collection for Saint Laurent Paris (formerly YSL) to look forward to. Paris Fashion Week isn’t Paris Fashion Week without a lavish Chanel show at the Grand Palais. We sometimes think there are only so many ways one can rework the iconic tweed jacket, but every season Karl Lagerfeld seems to find something new. Kaiser Karl has once again excelled, putting on a flawless collection that is the perfect mix of classic Chanel and modern, contemporary femininity. And as self-confessed bag addicts, we were particularly drawn to the pieces of arm and shoulder candy this season, especially the hula-hoop and leg-inspired bags. The oversized pearls also went down quite well with us – we do love statement bling! Elsewhere in Paris, the Chloe and Giambattista Valli shows took place, once again reiterating what we said about exaggerated silhouettes being key to the new season. Even though this isn’t a Couture collection, we kind of expected some big, bold and beautiful dresses to come out towards the end of the Giambattista Valli show (after all, they are the designer’s forte) but that didn’t happen this time round. Still, Giambattista’s exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail is still evident even in the simplest of pieces, which proves just why he gained that all-impotant Haute Couture appellation so early on. We know it’s early days as we still have the rest of Milan Fashion Week and the whole of Paris Fashion Week to look forward to, but we are declaring Moschino one of our favourite collections of the season (so far). Moschino presented somewhat of a “space-age meets sixties and seventies” collection, with more colourful, floral, vivid pieces than you can shake a stick at. The collection went from one extreme to the other in terms of colour (or lack thereof) as in amongst the bright floral pieces were chic monochrome ones that would be totally at home in Karl Lagerfeld’s personal wardrobe. It was also all about the flower power and complex cuts and silhouettes for Prada’s spring/summer 2013 catwalk outing too. The collection appears to have been relatively Japanese inspired if the kitsch, cute, elevated floral embellishments on the garments, silk kimono-style pieces and geisha-red lips on the models are anything to go by. And on a separate note, how Iris Apfel are those glasses on the third model above? Amazing! We’re not too sure where the metallic socks fit in though. A predominantly monochrome colour palette with a bit of bold red thrown in for good measure – how can you go wrong with something so timeless and classic?! You must know by now that we utterly adore American teen model Karlie Kloss; therefore it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that her British Vogue September issue was one of our most hotly anticipated mag covers of the month. However, we were sadly a little disappointed with the fashion Bible’s cover for the all-important September issue, which also happens to be the “biggest fashion issue ever”. Exciting stuff! Karlie was shot by Nick Knight, and is sporting a very bright, seventies-inspired look on the cover; we don’t know whether it’s a recurring theme in the editorial shoot too, but we’ll keep you posted nonetheless. We like what the mag was trying to do with the colour explosion (we all love our brights!) but aren’t overly keen on the clashing colours or the over-contrasting on Karlie’s face; perhaps less Photoshopping would have made the cover less loud? When all is said and done though, we will 100% be purchasing this when it hits the shelves – it is the September issue of the fashion Bible after all!

Armed with a brolley (nothing was going to keep us away!) we headed to Churchill House in New Bond Street to perve over Louis Vuitton’s brand new Cruise 2013 collection in person. Unlike most Cruise collections, where the motto is usually along the lines of “the skimpier the better”, the Louis Vuitton offering is far more subtle and understated. Basically, it doesn’t matter how hot the weather is (a problem we don’t really have to worry about here in Blighty – ha!) it’s still encouraged to dress in a chic and not too revealing manner. Although you’d think layering is the way forward for the autumn/winter season, it was in fact the base of the Louis Vuitton Crusie collection too. The colour palette was also somewhat relaxed and unconventional too; our favourite items of clothing included a navy blue evening dress and a red leather tunic dress. It’s also a little bit sixties and seventies in some places – the platform shoes with the psychedelic print gave that away! Of course our favourite part of any Louis Vuitton collection is the range of handbags, and lo and behold, we found ourselves practically salivating at the sight of the new pieces of arm candy on offer. We were very pleased to see the return of the Speedy and Neverfull bags which were in cute shades of caramel and pink, although we wouldn’t have said no to a wider selection of colours! We expected some more brightly coloured bags in the Cruise collection, but we were more than happy with the selection on show. Whether you love her or loathe her (and we don’t believe you if you do the latter), 2011 owes itself solely to one woman: Kate Middleton. Though her style remains distinctly average in our book (string us up and hang us for treason), there’s no denying the effect the Duchess of Cambridge has had on the world. And, since everything she wears sells out in seconds, the fashion brands she favours have got a lot to thank her for. Like everyone else, we’re kind of intrigued with her influence, so we’ve trawled through Kate’s best looks from this year to see her rise from pauper (ha!) to Princess in pictures, which has lead us to the following conclusions: 1) she’s a mega-fan of the high street, 2) she only wears a handful of designers and regurgitates them as necessary, 3) June was a particularly good month. Any seasoned shopper worth her wardrobe will have set her alarm especially early this morning to sift out the savviest steals the stores have got to offer! But a sale should never be approached without a thorough plan of what’s worth stashing up on and what’s not worth the 15-people queue, and since you’ve been so busy buying presents and preparing the turkey, we’ve made one for you. With tips on what’s worth its weight in gold and what to avoid at all costs, follow our steps below to the do’s and don’t’s of Christmas sale shopping… DO buy anything floral. It’s a perennial favourite that’ll prove super versatile come spring. DON’T buy rich, boozy colours. We may have gulped them up this winter, but come next season we’ll be looking for a brighter beverage. DO buy into neon. A hot pink tee here, a fluro-striped skirt there – it’s spring’s favourite fad, and since you won’t be wearing them forever, it makes sense to snap them up cheap. DON’T buy jewel tones. Autumn loves a deep, punchy palette, but next season’s all about the softer shades. On that note, DO buy pastels for reasons above. DON’T buy heritage tweeds. Tailoring comes much softer next spring, and unless you’re a country bumpkin, it’s time to pack away the posh past. DO buy pleated skirts. We saw them everywhere from Celine to Burberry, making them spring’s key skirt shape. DON’t buy Dalmatian print. Autumn might have loved this trend, but next season there’s not a dog’s dot in sight.
