Kids’ Choice Awards 2011: Best Dressed

Every year the celebs turn out in full force to celebrate the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles, and whilst it might not be the Oscars, it doesn’t stop the attendees upping the fashion stakes in fantastic form. With such a young and cool atmosphere, heavy long gowns and Chopard jewels were out in favour of fresh, youthful looks at this year’s 24th awards, all set for the spring season ahead. We’ve scoured the orange carpet for pictures of our favourite fashionistas from the weekend’s ceremony, so without further ado, here are the emerging style setters that stole the show at the 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards. Welcome to our top 10 best dressed list… Selena Gomez Selena was a real winner on the night in this outfit. Her Christian Cota shorts and top combo looked fantastic paired with her electric blue Camilla Skovgaard strappy sandals. Fresh, young and the best dressed on the night. Miley Cyrus Miley looked fresh and summery in her colourful strapless dress by Dolce and Gabbana. She can sometimes dress too old for her age on the red carpet, but this look is perfectly appropriate. Pixie Lott Pixie looks cute and playful is this adorable Miu Miu dress. The heart print and quirky collar give her an edge over many of the other looks seen on the night. Black strappy shoes and a long black shoulder bag complete her look. Kim Kardashian Kim showed off her killer curves in this Azzedine Alaia white ruffled dress. The colour looks great against her skin tone and she accessorized well with a beautiful Adriana Castro python clutch. This is definitely one of the most carefree looks we’ve seen from Kim in a while. Heidi Klum Heidi looked effortlessly chic in this fantastically-embellished Gucci mini dress. The spiky detailing gives a […]

Do you remember?: the clog

Ever look back and wonder why you wore that? So do we. This week we’re casting our minds back to the trends we wish we’d never laid eyes on, the one hit wonders we wish we’d never worn, and the ones we’re well-rid of. Only if you live in Holland and have grown accustom to these hideous wooden items of footwear are you forgiven for favouring the dreaded clog. As for the rest of us, there was no excuse for the unwelcomed return of this awful backless shoe last spring – which made way for a rather unwelcomed fashion trend we’d soon forget. Other than the Seventies, there was a brief spell in the mid-Nineties when clogs suddenly became fashionable again, so this in itself should suggest some things are better left well alone – absence definitely doesn’t make the heart grow fonder for these little mules. But where Parisian fashion giants Chanel are concerned, the clog was the perfect footwear frame for last year’s SS11 collection, with nearly every outfit finished off with a pair of these ankle breaking disasters. Not only are they difficult to walk in, you’re guaranteed almost certain injury with every step you take – but hey, who cares, right? A broken ankle here, a twisted foot there, it’s all in the name of fashion, dahling! Yeah right. These were by far the worst comeback disaster of last year (especially after the high street did them to death) – and one we won’t be reliving anytime soon.

Do you remember?: trucker hats

Ever look back and wonder why you wore that? So do we. This week we’re casting our minds back to the trends we wish we’d never laid eyes on, the one hit wonders we wish we’d never worn, and the ones we’re well-rid of. Straw boaters, trilbys, bowler hats – trendy headwear comes and goes, usually depending on the season and who the hottest indie band of the moment is (thank the Kooks for the straw trilby). But as floppy Seventies hats become the only hat to be seen in this season, it’s hard to believe that, once upon a time, trucker caps were ever the hat of choice. Back in the early Noughties every celeb from Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton to Ashton Kutcher and David Beckham were seen sporting them. Originally worn by American lorry drivers, the hats generally featured “witty” slogans or cartoon designs in bright colours and overly padded fabrics. They weren’t the most flattering of hats, yet they still somehow gained a loyal A-list following – and still do in some cases (Britney Spears and the Jersey Shore cast, we’re talking to you). Even uber-polished and preened Victoria Beckham regularly donned a trucker cap over her long extensions back in her WAG days – we bet she turns red at the mere memory now. This is one trend we truly hope never resurfaces – red-neck chic doesn’t even have a ring to it.

Michael Kors opens his first store in France

American designer Michael Kors certainly has something to smile about these days after opening his first store in Paris on rue Saint-Honore yesterday – we’d be sporting a pretty huge grin too. The store’s within short walking distance from Colette and stands as his largest store in his 175-shop global chain, with an impressive 7,000 square foot radius and two storeys high – it definitely makes a fashionable impression on the Parisian front. Kitted out in gleaming white glass and chrome interior, with zebra-skin rugs and black and white photographs galore, it looks as if Michael has favoured the monochrome style touch for this one. Inside you can find all the treasures you desire from the designer’s complete collections, including his diffusion line, Michael by Michael Kors; his main line, and all his accessories, jewellery and fragrances. But as a little something extra – he knows how the French love their little pet pooches – Kors has designed a new range of dog-carriers in canvas and leather with matching leads, especially for his new store. And with his new Madison Avenue store now open on the corner of 67th street in New York, followed closely by his new London lifestyle store on Regent Street opening in two weeks’ time, reports the Telegraph, it looks as if the Kors empire hasn’t finished expanding just yet.

First look: Blake Lively for Chanel Mademoiselle

After what seems like months of waiting – in fact it’s been just two – the first Blake Lively for Chanel Mademoiselle campaign has been released, and it’s every bit as smokin’ as we expected. Fronting the luxury French label’s new Mademoiselle handbag line – which doesn’t look half bad itself – Blake was shot by Karl Lagerfeld for the first in the series of spring campaigns in which she stares seductively into a panelled mirror in a black feathered dress and a patent red quilted bag. The ads are bowing in print mags and online this week and next, and will continue to roll out through until early June, WWD reports. Meanwhile, Blake was in Paris on Saturday to attend Chanel’s private dinner hosted by Karl in her honour – and it seems they make quite the pairing. “I have such a respect for fashion and such an appreciation for it that if there are people like Karl Lagerfeld out there designing, who am I?” she asks. “I want to bow down to them and be a representative for them if they’ll have me.” See below for more reasons to love Ms. Lively: “When I have bad days, I just eat lots of chocolate ice cream and dance to the ‘Lion King’ soundtrack. It’s really odd, but it’s true.” See, she is one of us. She just happens to be better looking. And have a small fortune in the bank.

Dior presents Galliano’s last ever collection

Despite the controversy, Dior presented its show according to schedule in Paris this afternoon – a sign of defiance to any disbelievers that the show must, and indeed will, go on. And as the house geared up to show the last ever collection crafted by dismissed creative director John Galliano, the pressure to perform under crisis was on. But the wild clapping and standing ovation received by the team of 40 or so ‘petites mains’, clad in white lab coats, who took to the runway to receive applause in place of the designer’s bow was proof that, perhaps, Dior had pulled it off. In light of Galliano’s anti-Semitic remarks and the chaos that’s ensued, Dior CEO Sidney Toledano made a quick appearance to address the audience and the past week’s events before the show started with a poignant statement. “What has happened over the last week has been a terrible and wrenching ordeal for us all. “It has been deeply painful to see the Dior name associated with the disgraceful statements attributed to its designer, however brilliant he may be. “Such statements are intolerable because of our collective duty to never forget the Holocaust and its victims, and because of the respect for human dignity that is owed to each person and to all peoples. “These statements have deeply shocked and saddened all at Dior who give body and soul to their work, and it is particularly painful that they have come from someone so admired for his remarkable creative talent,” he read. And then it was lights down as the show began, led by Dior girl Karlie Kloss in a dramatic cape and knee-length knickerbockers. It wasn’t, perhaps, the house’s best collection in terms of clothes – some critics have dubbed it a bit “sub-dued” with “no strong point […]

Megan Fox is Armani’s new Code woman

As the face of Giorgio Armani Cosmetics– not to mention Emporio Armani Underwear and Armani Jeans– it would appear only natural for stunning actress Megan Fox to front the brands latest Armani Code campaign. And front it, she most certainly has. With the exclusive advertising campaign premiering this month, we predict plenty of men drooling at the sight of the fantastic Fox. Dressed in a gorgeous Armani sequin gown -naturally- Megan looks somewhat different with that black cropped hair-do, but her perfect red pout, immaculate porcelain skin and piercing blue eyes, remind us why we’ve all come to know and love her signature look. The soon to be revealed print and television campaigns were shot in a glass iron villa amidst gloriously sunny L.A, but there’s not a drop of the golden good stuff in sight in these images, oh-no, it’s all about the dark and mysterious with this new seductive batch of pictorials. The ads tell an impressive tale of a man and woman who are searching for something they cannot identify; they fight the attraction, but slowly surrender to the captivating power of seduction- nice touch Armani. But fear not, the sexually empowering story continues on with the release of Armani Code Sport for men in June- phew! We heart Jimmy Choo’s 24:7 Handbag Collection!

Following on from the success of the Choo 24:7 shoe collection, Jimmy Choo has extended what it calls its ‘timeless shoe wardrobe’ and branched out into handbags. Inspired by jet-set women, the collection’s designed with travel needs in mind. It offers travel wallets, passport holders and large totes perfect for holding essentials as well as in-flight entertainment. And the weekend bags and suitcases are luggage you’ll be so pleased with, carrying-on will be the only option. With clean, neutral colours and classic prints, these wearable everyday luxe bags are available in a variety of styles and finishes, from mock-crock to patent and pony hair. Sure, the designs may be considered to be playing it safe for some, but if you’re looking for a classic, comfortable bag or suitcase that will stay chic and stylish for decades then the 24:7 collection offers you exactly that. Our favourite? The Romeo bag in a camel mock croc – the price tag is easily justifiable with, “it’s an investment piece”.  And if you don’t take our word for it, the bags have been spotted on the likes of Elle McPherson, Kate Hudson Kylie, Cameron Diaz and Heidi Klum. Hey, if it’s good enough for them… Your destination could be Bognor Regis or Paris – with with one of these bags on your arm, it doesn’t matter where you’re off to, you’ll always look glamourous. Get the look: Alexa Chung in Chanel Couture

For those fashionistas lucky enough to attend even one of the couture shows in Paris this week, good for you – we’re really not jealous at all. Ahem. But at least we get to spy on what they’re wearing, and today’s pick of the pretty crop is the cool and sophisticated Alexa Chung. Standing outside Chanel’s Paris store before its show yesterday afternoon, Ms. Chung chose to wear a quirky tuxedo dress from the label’s AW10 Couture collection – after all, she loves a bit of androgyny at the best of times – and luckily for fashion fans, achieving Alexa’s sweet style is easier than you might imagine. If, like us, you want to recreate this haute couture look at home, take a peek below – we’ve got it covered.

Diane Kruger in Chanel Couture

Almost as exciting as the couture shows are the slickly-styled stars who attend them, and one such faultless front row-er arriving at Chanel’s Paris store yesterday for the luxury label’s spring/summer 2011 couture show was Diane Kruger, dressed, of course, in the haute house. Wearing a nude couture dress from Chanel’s AW10 couture collection encrusted in diamond, crystal and gold jewel embellishments, Ms. Kruger gave a lesson in how to make elegant – not to mention expensive – dressing look easy. The elbow-finish sleeves and classic knee-length cut offered the perfect balance to the dress’s finer details, and teamed with patent black strapped sandals and an artfully messy plaited up ‘do, Diane oozed effortless Parisian chic. And we’re not even going to mention those enviably toned calves…

Who will replace Carine Roitfeld?

So Carine’s gone, and there’s only one question on everyone’s lips – who will replace her? While the fashion world waits for Vogue Paris to announce who will be filling Roitfeld’s well-heeled shoes (she’s nothing if not a sky-scraper expert), speculation is spreading like wild fire – and there’s a few names cropping up rather frequently. Without further ado, we bring you Roitfeld’s possible, probable and ever-promising replacements… 1. Emannuelle Alt Who: Fashion director at Vogue Paris Why: Having been the Fashion Director of Vogue Paris for 10 years and working under Carine since 2001, Emannuelle’s experience – including a stint at Mixte and five years as editor in chief of 20 Ans – stands her in good stead to replace her former boss. 2. Virginie Mouzat Who: Fashion director at Le Figaro Why: Mouzat’s been working as the fashion director at Le Figaro for a decade, in which time she’s transformed the style section of the French daily – apparently rumours are coming from a ‘well-placed source’ that she’s Roitfeld’s replacement. 3. Aliona Doletskaya Who: Former editor in chief of Russian Vogue Why: Aliona recently stepped down from her role as editor in chief at Russian Vogue after, much like Roitfeld, deciding to concentrate on personal projects following 13 years at the magazine. Perhaps a change of scenery is just what the fashion doctor ordered. 4. Giovanna Battaglia Who: Former D&G model and fashion editor at L’Uomo Vogue Why: Battaglia has just left L’Uomo Vogue – men’s Vogue Italia – and has just shot her first fashion story for Vogue Paris. But here’s the cincher – she also happens to be the girlfriend of Carine’s son. There’s still room for nepotism yet. 5. Dasha Zhukova Who: Former editor in chief at Pop Magazine Why? Though she may not be […]

Spotted: Angelina Jolie wearing Gucci’s 1973 bag

Whilst attending a press event in Paris last week for her latest film, The Tourist, Angelina Jolie was spotted wearing a coveted 1973 Gucci handbag on her arrival. And the bag’s gathered somewhat of a high status celebrity following recently, let us tell you, with the likes of Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz all carrying this latest piece of arm candy. Frida Giannini, the luxury label’s creative director, took a look back into the brand’s 1973 fashion archive to source a little sartorial inspiration for this new and exclusive collection of handbags – after all, everyone loves a revamped classic. But though this black leather top handle tote is undeniably feminine (well, it’s big enough for all our womanly essentials), it doesn’t really scream out to us. We love its minimalist design, and it may be extremely well-crafted to last you a lifetime, but if we were going to splash some serious cash on a Gucci garment – or otherwise – we’d want the whole world to know about it. After all, a bit of fashion flashing doesn’t go a-miss…

Keira Knightley in Chanel

While many women envy Keira Knightley’s super slim figure and sultry plumped-up pout, there’s something else they can now, regrettably, add to their list – her impeccable fashion sense. Sporting an ultra chic new bob in Paris last week, Ms. Knightley attended the Chanel spring/summer 2011 show in style, and dressed head to toe in the luxury French label at the Grand Palais, the British actress looked every inch the Parisian goddess. The Chanel muse was bang on trend with this gold vintage flapper-inspired dress, paying homage to autumn’s ever-stylish beige tones. A black tweed jacket, meanwhile, gave Kiera a sharp, tailored look, making a cool contrast to her girly sequined frock. And to top the outfit off? A quilted Chanel chain strap bag, of course – we don’t think Coco would’ve had it any other way. From Bend it like Beckham to international superstar, this home-grown beauty has certainly reached new heights in the style stakes.

Get the look: Megan Fox in Armani

Megan Fox was a head turner at Milan Fashion Week in September, and at Giorgio Armani’s spring/summer 2011 show, her Armani ensemble screamed elegant simplicity whilst still remaining sexy – a look Megan always seems to pull off. The Armani jacket is the focal point of the outfit; we love its strong shoulders and sharp cut which highlights Megan’s best features. Her minimal accessories make her look effortlessly chic, but her statement facet ring and clutch bag keep the glamour in her outfit – and we couldn’t wait to recreate it. See our top picks for how to get Megan’s look… Etoile Isabel Marant Wool Herringbone Blazer, £325, Net-A-Porter All eyes are immediately drawn to Megan’s jacket; it’s the statement piece of the outfit. This is further emphasised by the choice of a black dress layered underneath so the jacket can create contrast – and this Etoile Isabel Marant wool herringbone blazer fits the bill perfectly. Not only is it almost an exact match to the light grey of Armani’s piece but it also has long sleeves and one button to cinch your waist for Megan-like curves. TFNC Sash Bandeau Dress, £35, ASOS This dress is a classic LBD which can be worn over and over again. The layered pleat design is also an ideal match to Megan’s dress, and whilst we can’t see if hers is strapless, the sweetheart neckline bears a strong similarity to the heart shaped cut out detail on Ms. Fox’s. Miss KG Eden Concealed Platform Heeled Court Shoes, £65, ASOS Not only are these KG courts the same shade as Megan’s, they also share the same soft suede finish. The classic court and rounded toe design is super-sleek, while the concealed platform is guaranteed to save your feet at the end of a girl’s night […]

Kelly Brook at the premiere of Piranha 3D

Kelly Brook looked stunning when attending the screening of her newest movie Piranha 3D in Paris last week, and while some of her outfits have left something to be desired, we can’t deny that her latest red carpet look left us feeling a little green. The 30-year-old actress looked beautiful in this lacy lady-like number which clung to her curves in all the right places, and Kelly chose minimal accessories to let the low-cut dress do all the talking. The silver chain bracelet and classic drop earrings are the perfect subtle accessories to keep all eyes on her dress, as is the make-up – a natural colour palette of browns and nudes. Kelly finished off her style by teaming her polished look with a pair of red satin peep-toe heels, which left us thinking just one thing – can we look that good too, please?

MFL does my-wardrobe: Vanessa Bruno Athé day bag

In the words of Backstreet Boys, oh my god we’re back again. Yep, it’s Friday already, but, er, unlike those combat-clad lads with curtains, we’re back with a bag – and it’s a good’un, let us tell you. Facing the fashion test this week? The Vanessa Bruno Athé mushroom washed leather day bag. Now there’s a mouthful. Let’s try something easier, like Vanessa. Ah, yes, Vanessa – the ultimate slouchy bag. She’s like your secretly cooler friend who always manages to pull off urban downtown dressing better than you… but unlike your friend, you can wear Vanessa. She’s the perfect example of luxe meets relaxed with her sumptuously soft leather and utilitarian touches, all worked into a slouchy shape that channels fashion’s new bohemian cool with a mushroom wash to keep things on the contemporary side of classic. She’s deceptively large, too – an ode her slouchiness – making her a great off-duty bag. Throw in your usuals (purse, notepad, camera, water), add a jacket (any size, she can handle it) and a spare pair of shoes for a quick change, and she’ll ask you what else you’ve got. Well, Vanessa, I’ve got a phone, some makeup and a couple of pens, actually. Not a problem – she’s got a deep inner zip, a Blackberry-sized phone pocket and two pen-sized pouches to cover that. Clever. I’ve also got some rubbish that I don’t want to put inside you but I can’t find a bin, Vanessa. Aha, she’s got two amply-sized side pockets for that reason (well, I highly doubt they’re actually designed for rubbish, but they come in darn handy, I’ll tell you). And oh, look, here’s some important paper work that I don’t want to get squashed, I bet you can’t help with that one. Actually, she could – […]

Five minutes with Kinder Aggugini

Before launching his own label in 2005, Italian born designer Kinder Aggugini, had built a sparkling career as the silent talent behind look after look from a number of big hitters including John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood, Versace and Calvin Klein. He’s described his signature style as ‘Coco Chanel marries Sid Vicious’ and on reflection that seemingly odd match does make sense. Aggugini, with his bold splashes of colour, has the showmanship and swagger of the latter, but underneath are clothes that most women would love to wear – beautifully cut, versatile and unashamedly expensive. It’s a unique style that has won him plenty of fans. His debut at London fashion week last year garnered rave reviews from respected critics including Hilary Alexander who described his clothes as “magical”. His last collection was inspired by one of most intriguing and controversial women of Napoleonic Paris – Madame Recamier – combining gorgeous empire line silhouettes with a punk mentality. In just three seasons, Aggugini has become one of the hottest names on the London Fashion Week roster and he has the busy schedule to match. But he found a few minutes to answer our questions… When did you first realise you wanted to be a designer? My mum taught me how to sew at eight and I started tapering my schoolmate’s jeans, which in turn got me a great place in the football team. I knew than that making clothes produced excellent results.  What is it about fashion that keeps you coming back?  The thrill of the new and the amazing feeling of creating something that moves people. What is the best and worst thing about working in fashion? The hours. What have been the highs and lows of your career thus far? Seeing the line up just before the show begins. Not being […]
