Get the look: Sarah Jessica Parker in Donna Karan

Ladies, a lesson in trans-seasonal dressing from the style queen herself, Ms. Sarah Jessica Parker. At last week’s New York premiere of The Big C, SJP opted for an effortlessly elegant look in a pared-down parker, grey jersey dress and, shocker of all shockers, flats. We love the relaxed girl-about-town look – especially the draped waterfall detailing on her softly tailored Donna Karan jacket – so much so, in fact, we rather fancy recreating her look for ourselves. Edun parka, £355, exclusively at Browns Fashion Edun’s cropped-sleeve lightweight parker is the perfect throw-on jacket for this unpredictable weather, and not only does that ruffle collar give it a bit of structure, it also instantly updates a classic piece with a fresh focal point. Long sleeve jersey dress, £20, ASOS A grey jersey dress is a wardrobe staple and a great base for layering – we like this long-sleeved version from ASOS that’ll see us through to the end of summer and take us into the new season. Beads Off blue fabric necklace, £14, Topshop Inject a splash of colour with a statement necklace – SJP opts for a blue beads to break up the neutral tones of her dress and jacket, and we’ve found a purse-friendly option at Topshop, complete with metallic beads and a chiffon tie. KG by Kurt Geiger Lottie sandals, £59, Kurt Geiger Finish the look by adding a touch of twinkle to your toes with a pair of jewelled sandals – they’re practical and pretty, and perfect for spicing up a simple outfit.

How to wear it: leather shorts

Still no joy on the weather front, eh? Well, as the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining, and this particularly grey cloud does have its plus side. Remember those leather shorts you’ve been lusting after all summer but haven’t been able to wear for fear of getting too, er, sticky? Now’s the perfect time to snap them up (or pull them out of your wardrobe if you’ve been especially savvy) and work them for this trans-seasonal period. If you didn’t already know, shorts are the new-season way to wear leather – we’ve got our eye on Topshop’s purse-friendly pair that feature a flattering high waist and a wider leg. But just to make sure you stay stylish and don’t veer too far onto lederhosen territory, take a tip from us as to how to wear yours. Silk pocket detail blouse, £125, Jaeger Balance out your tough bottom half with a suitably sleek silk blouse – not only is it a wardrobe staple, it’ll add a touch of femininity to your edgy shorts. We love Jaeger’s slightly-sheer nude version with interesting pocket detail and a concealed button-up front. For an effortless look, tuck it in, roll the sleeves up a notch or two and leave a few buttons undone at the neck. Ames suede ankle boots, £60, ASOS Bare legs always welcome a heel – and these taupe suede ankle boots from Jaeger will lengthen your legs no end. With a matching block heel, these boots are a great way of adding extra texture to your outfit – something you’ll want plenty of come autumn – and keep things comfortably cool. Ceannis big flap bag, £285, Browns Fashion To stop your look becoming too put-together, add a slouchy bag for a just-thrown-on finish. The tan shade of this one […]

10 Hottest items this week

Want to know what to buy from this week’s in-store drop? Take a little inspiration from us – every week we’ll scour the virtual rails of our favourite online haunts to bring you 10 hotter-than-hot items that style-savvy shoppers are just dying to get their hands on as they land. In this week: chunky clog boots, silk blouses, exclusive jewellery and the perfect trans-seasonal socks… 1. French Connection Seaton studded boot, £130, Kurt Geiger Fashion’s obsession with clogs shows no signs of waning as we approach autumn – they’ve just taken on a new-season twist. With a chunky wooden heel, a lace-up front and gold studding detail, French Connection’s brown Seaton clog boots are an instant wardrobe update, and have quickly made their way to the top of our autumn wish-list. 2. Spot jacquard blouse, £125, Jaeger As dressing takes a more minimalist approach, it’s time to embrace staple separates. We love Jaeger’s spot jacquard blouse – not only will its nude shade be suitable for the last remaining days of summer, its tough zip detailing will lend itself well to the new season, too. 3. Mint Lace 60’s Shift Dress, £45, Topshop A simple shift is a wardrobe essential, but the 60s vibe of this Topshop dress is right on-par with fashion’s retro-resurrection as of late. In pastel mint it provides a base for a whole host of accompanying hues, and its lace fabric is a great way to add a touch of texture to your outfit 4. Khaki over the knee socks, £4, ASOS Over the knee socks may seem a little excessive for August, but they’re the perfect trans-seasonal piece for this wayward weather. Throw them on with a dress and wedges to keep the chill at bay, knowing you can just as easily whip them off […]

How to wear it: the J Brand Houlihans

It might be the beginning of August, but waking up to torrential rain in a humid London yesterday, you’d really never have guessed it. But rather than longing for your favourite graphic print playsuit and strappy sandals, reach instead for your J Brand Houlihans. A cross between skinny jeans and cargo pants, they’re the cool new-season way to don your denim (as well as being mid-weather-appropriate) – and if you need a little inspiration as to how to wear yours, take a hint from us below to achieve contemporary-classic style. Cheap Monday batwing shirt, £40 at ASOS A classic white shirt will not only be an investment to your wardrobe for seasons to come, it’s also a great way to add a bit of structure to your relaxed bottom half. We love the boxy cut of this batwing shirt from Cheap Monday at ASOS – the perfect shape to balance out your super-skinny pants – and its sharp collar adds an especially slick touch. Sam Edelman lace-up wedges, £170 at Matches A pair of peep-toe wedges offer a subtle flash of feet and femininity, not to mention the height the heel adds to lengthen your legs – oh, and we’re sure we don’t need to mention the word ‘transitional’ to you, but peep-toe booties will see you through summer and onto autumn. We particularly like the way these Sam Edelman babies finish below the ankle, leaving a sexy sneak of skin before the bottom of your houlihans. Leopard box tassel bag, £30 at Topshop Accessories are the biggest way to wear leopard print right now, so keep on par with the fash pack and grab yourself a statement bag – this box-shaped one from Topshop offers a great faux pony skin texture and comes with a detachable strap to give […]

Five minutes with Barbara Hulanicki

Legend isn’t a word we like to throw around lightly, but it’s the only word we see fit to describe Barbara Hulanicki – a woman who, alongside her husband, changed the face of British fashion in the Sixties. After starting her career as an illustrator, Barbara Hulanicki shot to success with Biba, the iconic fashion store, almost half a century ago and she’s since trod many waters in several different shores – fashion design in Britian, Brazil and Japan, makeup, numerous collaborations and interior design in Miami. That’s where she currently resides, with her hugely successful interiors company, and has been credited with doing as much for the architecture scene over there as she has done for fashion here. More recently, however, she’s the subject of a feature film, Beyond Biba, which charts her incredible life from her humble beginnings to her soaring success. After grabbing a copy of the film, we caught up with Barbara Hulanicki to find out more about this often over-looked but undeniably talented designer. First of all Barbara, congratulations on Beyond Biba! Yes, well, I had nothing to do with it – it was the lads who did it all. How did it come about? Well that came about because Louis’s [Price, director] mother used to work for me in the Sixties and Seventies at Biba, then she just rang me up and said could Louis come and film you in Miami while you work? So I said yes, why not? And I thought it was just an interview actually, I didn’t realise it was going to be so much fun and games. Well it’s fantastic. We’ve seen it a couple of times now and we love it. Oh do you? Fabulous. I try not to watch it – I get very cross with myself […]

House of Fraser press day AW2010

For autumn/winter 2010, major department store House of Fraser presented their clothes and accessories in different trend-led categories, mixing the labels to give a clearer vision of the kind of image we can expect from the store next season. The ‘Twilight’ category – whilst appropriately acknowledging the popular teen phenomenon -showed off a gothic approach that will cater for the younger market but also featured some wearable separates that will appeal to many a buyer. Revealing a mainly dark palette, key pieces included a black lace halter-neck dress (reminiscent of Prada, fall 2008) from Pied a Terre and cobweb style pullovers from the store’s new house brand, Label Lab. Throw biker jackets and a particularly lovely bag from Ted Baker and you’ve got a strong, laid-back collection of differing textures to create that romantic, vampy look. As we perused the ‘Wild Things’ rack we noticed a distinct nod to Topshop’s brilliant autumn/winter 2010 catwalk, with heavy neutral knits, faux fur and a gorgeous shearling waterfall coat from Therapy. Fluid lines were broken up with a selection of skinny jeans from Linea Weekend and J Brand. Clothing on the ‘Pantomime’ and ‘Vamp’ rails focussed on polished glamour and party-inspired pieces, achieving a more demure and grown up look. Linea’s navy blue shift and Episode’s vibrant red dress, suggest that velvet will be a continuing trend for next season while exquisite statement jewellery from the likes of Erickson Beamon, Mawi and newcomer Fiona Paxton, prove that bolder is better. The ‘Utility’ section offered perhaps our favourite selection of clothes; most notably a heavy duty trench and a jumpsuit, both from Label Lab. There’s plenty of leather on show too. Not only in the shape of biker jackets and Burberry-style aviator coats but more sophisticated silhouettes. Linea have produced a leather skirt and […]

Their low ankle strap is sure to make your legs look like they go on forever and they’re the perfect shoes to accompany any mini dress. Lunchtime buy: Makin Jan Ma knit cardigan

The sun has had his hat on over these glorious passed few days, which means us Brits have already stripped to our summer uniform of floaty dresses, flip flops and oversized shades. Come the evening however, we often begin to regret our style choices as the sun sets and the chill creeps in. We’re after the perfect cardigan to cover up with on those cool summer nights and our first port of call is Makin Jan Ma whose romantic spring collection is now available at Topshop. The latest range is inspired by MGMT’s Electric Feel, tapping into that nervous feeling of a new romance and the pure excitement of love. This chunky knit is an ideal cover-up for the summer, and the pastel pink colour will only add to that feminine, granny-chic look when paired with a cute spring floral. £165 from Topshop.

TK Maxx styling challenge

We like to think of ourselves as somewhat style-savvy here at My Fashion Life, so when our friends at TK Maxx asked us to take part in a styling challenge, rise we did. So here’s the deal: TK Maxx give us one dress from their spring collection which we then style in three different ways for three very different scenarios. Easy, non? Well, we’ll let you be the judge of that. The dress in question is this cute floral tea dress, £16.99 (pictured) – admittedly not the easiest dress to style, with its fussy neckline and hip sash detail, but it’s pretty nonetheless (though truth be told, we prefer some of the dresses dealt out to the other bloggers involved). And actually, that’s what makes this challenge a little tricky, because you guys have to vote for your favourite look. But anyway, that’s quite enough of an introduction for one day, so let’s get to the nitty gritty: behold below our final looks. Look one – meeting the boyfriend’s parents: Accessories: cropped denim jacket – Topshop, £40; Miu Miu nude canvas tote – Net-a-Porter, £750; black wedge clogs – Topshop, £50; Mac Tinted Lipgloss in Ember Glow – Mac, £12. On a day which injects fear into the toughest girls’ hearts, being comfortable is key to surviving ’til tea-time; scrap those five-inch heels, save on sparkles and sequins, and scrape off the excess makeup – we’re going for grown-up cute, here. Keep things simple and up-to-date with a cropped denim jacket and a nude canvas bag: both say relaxed without being scruffy. To inject a real style statement, opt for these black suede clog wedges – not only are they bang on trend, they’re practical, too, and add a little edge to offset the sweetness. A slick of tinted gloss […]

Lunchtime buy: Laura Lees for Freya limited edition t-shirts

The dreaded bra fitting. It’s something that us women know we should all have done, yet nearly 80% of us are still wondering around wearing the wrong sized bra. Lingerie specialists Freya aim to change all that though, with their new campaign Holy Fit. (Get it?!) Created to raise awareness about the importance of a fitted bra, Holy Fit aims to educate women about the health risks involved by wearing ill-fitted underwear and to help us realise the positive change a fitted bra can make to our appearance and self confidence. To celebrate the launch of this new campaign, Freya has collaborated with British textile designer Laura Lees to create a range of limited edition t-shirts that are both stylish and affordable whilst focussing on the Holy Fit message. Lees – who has previously worked on collections for Giles Deacon, Luella Bartley and Topshop – states: ‘The message is vital for young girls. I myself wasn’t fitted properly for a long time but now that I have, I can’t believe the difference a simple bra has made to the way I look… This collaboration gave me a brand new design challenge and I wanted the t-shirts to be totally unique and bang on trend so they will appeal to all girls.’ Lees’ designs are available in two sizes. This ensures that versatility is key, as the baggy tees can be paired with jeans; over leggings or worn even belted, as a dress. The general sizing also works to focus us on the idea that a bra-fitting is what is most important according to Holy Fit, as opposed to a tight-fitting top. There are only 60 t-shirts in each design so you’ll need to be quick to snap one up! Each shirt is just £25 and all proceeds go towards the […]

These suede pumps from Belle by Sigerson Morrison won’t exactly keep the feet dry so we might have to wait until we see a sign of the sun again before we can come up with an excuse to purchase them, but they’re bound to be much more comfortable for our tootsies. $220 from Shopbop.

MFL’s top 20 must-haves for spring

The (admittedly few) sunny days we’ve had this week have really got us looking forward to warmer months and since we’ve already given our current wardrobe a good old spring clean, we like to think that we deserve a bit of seasonal indulgence. In an early attempt to create our spring wish list, we’ve compiled some of our favourite pieces for the coming season. Tony Blair joins LVMH?

What the…? We’ve seen some surprising collaborations in the past, but this has knocked our sequinned Miu Miu socks off. Seriously. Apparently the former Prime Minister’s political career isn’t going so well, so he thought he’d make the customary career move into the world of fashion. Well of course, we mean, if our fashion career fell flat we’d be applying for the post of Prime Minister right away. According to Elle UK, Tony Blair is in final negotiations with the men in suits at luxury leather goods giants LVMH. But fear not, fashion fans; Blair won’t be getting all creative on us , he’ll be joining as an advisor to Bernard Arnault, the head of the company (we hear the pair are good pals). “There is an agreement in principle but nothing has been signed yet, a source revealed. “Mr Blair won’t be joining the board but he will be acting in an advisory role, working very closely with Mr Arnault in particular. His job is likely to involve attracting new clients. If all goes ahead he’ll be taking up his new role later in the year. And so fashion’s friendship with politics continues…

Top 5 sequin party picks

The festive season just wouldn’t be complete without a sprinkle of sequins now, would it? Last year saw stores decorated with an abundance of the metallic shine that we are so easily drawn to and this winter it seems that little has changed. As long-time sequin lovers, we are certainly not complaining. See below for designers that embraced the sparkle, and our top 5 picks for festive sequin dressing: 3.1 Philip Lim Some of the most memorable pieces from Phillip Lim’s collection were those showered with gold sequins, which makes his fall collection one of MFL’s favourites. Lim’s wearable look teamed sequins with short hemlines and tailored trousers. The perfect take on sexy androgyny. Matthew Williamson Matthew Williamson went down an alternative route, discovering boho bling with his sequinned maxi dress. A surprising success, Williamson managed to apply his colour techniques to the material, creating a gorgeous mix of gold and blue. Whoever knew sequins could go sienna style? Balmain Not for the faint-hearted, Balmain’s teeny tiny dresses have caused quite a stir , or rather, ‘Balmania’ , among fashionistas. Loud and proud (although not to the extent of Ashish’s neon, sequinned, animal print trousers) was the name of the game for Christophe Decarnin this season, with a range of look-at-me body-con pieces ready for that 80s disco. Our Top 5 sequinned party picks: Paul & Joe Twilight sequin jacket £530 available from Net-a-Porter Sequin Houston Bandeau dress £95 available from Net-a-Porter La Petite S***** Draped silk sequin dress £995 available from Net-a-Porter Malene Birger Satin Embellished Clutch £200 available from My-Wardrobe

Arcadia SS10 press day: Miss Selfridge, DP’s, Wallis & Evans

We’ve already taken a look at what Topshop had to offer at the Arcadia SS10 day; now let’s have a peek at what some of some of the other stores had in store: Miss Selfridge: Miss Selfridge went all retro fairground on us with an old school carousel, ticket office and fruit machines used as props around the store’s mannequins. The fun setting complemented the strong theme of flirty, romantic dresses and skirts in neutral tones which – teamed with antiquey inspired jewellery – nodded towards the style of Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan. There were also brief apperances of coloured, beaded embellishments and Prada-like heels with scarf ties. Youthful accessories came in the shape of vibrant sweetie charms. Dorothy Perkins: DP’s has really concentrated on it’s shoe collection for next season, with an impressive range of heels on show. One particular pair of pink platforms resembled something from Kurt Geiger and the studded courts in black and patent beige were that edgy side of glam. Clothing wise, romantic frills were seen once again, alongside a spot of the preppy nautical style and one sequinned dress (could the trend be diminishing?) in unusual and striking white. Wallis: Wallis came up with a strong collection for next year, showcasing sophisticated handbags and accessories alongside animal print and tribal style clothing in warm, sumptuous hues. polka dot and stripey prints came in monochrome and the more exciting pieces were those that were – again – more neutral. Two winners included the dove grey suede jacket and the asymmetrical zebra print dress. Expect more shoulder pads at Wallis, too. Evans: There was a lot of print at Evans, whether it was floral dresses and bags or animal print pumps and bags. The jackets were our favourites – two of which took on the […]
