Who won what at the 2013 British Fashion Awards…

We’ve been talking about them for months, so we think you know by now that the British Fashion Awards took place in London last night. The most stylish and fashionable faces rocked up in their finest attire for the lavish ceremony, and they certainly didn’t disappoint as far as their red carpet attire was concerned. More red carpet style a little later on, but first of all let’s recap who won what… The most coveted award of the evening – British Womenswear Designer of the Year – which was last year won by Stella McCartney went to, drumroll please, Christopher Kane! 2013 is definitely his year, as he also walked away with the Scottish Designer of the Year prize a few months ago. Burberry also did very well last night, as it picked up the award for British Brand of the Year as well as Menswear Designer of the Year, while JW Anderson walked away with the New Establishment Designer award. Nicholas Kirkwood and Erdem won the respective Accessory Designer of the Year  and Red Carpet gongs. It wasn’t just about the designers though; Edie Campbell won Model of the Year, while Harry Styles was crowned British Style Award winner by the public. (Was he the one you voted for?) And of course, as we told you last week, Kate Moss picked up the Special Recognition Award  which was presented to her by her good friend Marc Jacobs. Phew – we think that’s everything. Come back later for a full roundup of the best red carpet style from last night’s event.

Alexa Chung is the new face of Longchamp!

Alexa Chung has followed in the footsteps of Coco Rocha and our very own Kate Moss, as she has become the latest face of French leather goods brand Longchamp! The spring/summer 2014 ad campaign images were shot in sunny St Tropez last month by Max Vadukul, and will break in the February editions of some of our favourite mags including Elle and Vogue. The main focus of the ads, apart from Alexa obviously, is the new drool-worthy Escales collection. “For the new Escales collection – which is cheerful, colourful and bursting with energy – we needed a woman who was both chic and modern,” said Marie-Sabine Leclercq, a spokesperson for the label. “Alexa Chung is the woman who embodies it the best. Her enchanting gaze, which is very strong and very present, gives the campaign a lot of personality. She has energy and confidence. “The whole team fell under her spell. She immediately had a real vision and made a very on-point contribution to the looks for the shoot. There was such a synergy and an energy that we all went home delighted with this initial experience with her.” Wow, we think that’s the highest praise we’ve ever heard someone give an ad campaign star; way to go Alexa! Maybe Longchamp will do a Mulberry and create a bag inspired by her since she impressed the brand so much… watch this space! [Vogue]

Marge Simpson recreates our favourite fashion icon moments

What’s your ultimate, most iconic fashion memory? Was it Kate Middleton’s Issa engagement dress? Perhaps you like to go classic and Audrey Hepburn’s Givenchy dress in Breakfast at Tiffany‘s is more up your street? Or maybe you like to go modern and sexy and Kate Moss’s recent Playboy pose has bumped the others off the list? Well it doesn’t matter, because Marge Simpson has channelled them all thanks to a series of photos by world-renowned artist AleXsandro Palombo. “There is a Marge Simpson is every woman and with this tribute I wanted to ignite the magic that is in every women; the strength, femininity, elegance, eroticism and beauty,” Palombo said. ” Each of these dresses really changed the course of the history of costume, giving a new aesthetic vision that has anticipated major changes in our society. “In many cases it’s the dress that has transformed a woman into an icon, but in many others, it’s the personality of the women that has enlightened the dress.” And we think Marge Simpson has, at the risk of sounding like an X Factor judge, made the dress her own! Click here to see the rest of the pictures, which include Marge’s take on dresses worn by Elizabeth Hurley, Victoria Beckham and Marilyn Monroe. We think you know the one!

Daria Werbowy named new face of Mango

Mango has revealed the newest face of its ad campaigns – and that face is none other than Daria Werbowy! The stunning 29-year-old Canadian/Polish model replaces Miranda Kerr (who did a wonderful job of posing for the brand we think you’ll all agree) and follows in the footsteps of Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Penelope Cruz, Claudia Schiffer and Milla Jovovich to name just a few. “As part of our policy of collaborating with celebrities from the world of fashion, Mango has decided to collaborate with one of top fashion models of the moment,” said Ninona Vila, a spokesperson for the brand. “In choosing a model of the stature of Daria Werbowy, our aim is not only to highlight our brand values, but also the importance of the quality and design of the garments in the new collection.” Well said. We have to wait until February for the full campaign to launch (boo!), but the sneaky behind-the-scenes image above is getting us nicely excited. [Daily Mail]

Who is your ultimate British Style Icon? Cast your votes!

The nominations for the British Fashion Award’s Style Icon category are finally in, and we, the public, are going to have a pretty tough time choosing a winner this year. However, despite walking away with the award every year since 2010, Alexa Chung hasn’t been nominated. We reckon she’s been left off the list to give someone else a chance! If she’s still your number 1 style icon though and you want to vote for her, don’t despair as you can enter her name in the “other” category. All hope is not lost! Who will you be voting for? Mollie King joins Oasis for ‘Loved By Mollie’ collection

It’s all about celebs and high street at the moment; Kate Moss for Topshop, Rihanna for River Island, and now Mollie King for Oasis. The Saturdays singer has been named as celebrity style ambassador for Oasis, and has curated a 45-piece edit of her favourite pieces from the autumn/winter 2013 collection. The edit is rather aptly titled ‘Loved by Mollie’, although we have a feeling it’ll be loved by women across the nation, too! “I went into the Oasis office and there were rails and rails of clothes that I could dive through. It was like every girl’s dream,” Mollie said about the process. “I picked out my favourite bits, but it was really hard to narrow everything down because obviously I couldn’t pick the whole collection! I wanted a mixture of evening wear and casual pieces.” We’d have that problem too – the Oasis collection is stronger than ever this season! Still, we think Mollie did a really good job and we think she looks gorgeous in the campaign images too. Head over to Oasis to see all the pieces in the Loved by Mollie edit. [Grazia]

Get it right on the night!

When out on the town, it’s always good to stand out from the crowd, but there’s a difference between standing out for all the right reasons as opposed to standing out like a sore thumb. You want to look good and feel good and unfortunately not all of us are Kate Moss (whom can look gorgeous effortlessly)…some of us (me included)…need a little help. So worry not. Follow our simple tips to ensure you look glam at any and every event you attend. Clothing for every occasion Naturally what you wear will be dictated by the occasion. A night out with friends will probably require an alternative outfit to dressing for a date. A meal out is often on the cards when wooing a potential mate, so ensure you dress to impress. Dinner at a smart restaurant should call for some fancy footwear and a sharply tailored jacket. Generally speaking, formal evening attire should be picked from a darker colour palette. Consider a jacket in a dark, neutral colour to add sophistication to jeans and smart shoes. For a less formal date, such as a trip to Cineworld Cinemas or a couple of drinks, create a laid-back look with a casual jacket and jeans. Dark colours still work well, but dress the blazer down with a t-shirt and trainers. For lunch in the park or an afternoon stroll, comfort is the key to laid-back style. Comfortable dressing, however, does not give you carte blanche to wear ill-fitting clothes. Jeans and a hoody can look great, just ensure they fit properly and are not your go-to garments for lounging in front of the football. A collared shirt worn under a hooded sweatshirt will ensure you elevate the look beyond lounging. While it’s important to create the right impression and to choose […]

Alexa Chung talks It girl status in October’s Nylon

Alexa Chung is on fire this month. As well as launching her brand new book It, covering British Vogue’s latest issue and finding herself on the front row of the hottest designers this Fashion Week, you can also see her fronting the October issue of Nylon. Doesn’t she look great rocking her signature androgynous look? The 29-year-old is posing in some gorgeous designer threads from Louis Vuitton to Chanel to all else in-between in the editorial, as she also opens up about her ‘It’ girl status and her portrayal as a fashion maven… “I could never be that earnest about giving fashion advice because I don’t want people to think that I think I’m that great,” she said, before telling the mag what she thought about being referred to as an “it” girl. “It’s a funny title,” she continued. “The older I get, the more I’m like, ‘Oh it’s not that bad.’ But when ‘It’ was first stuck on me, I was like, ‘No, I’m not!’ I felt like that label was reserved for girls who were famous for being famous. “Is Kate Moss still an It Girl? Charlotte Rampling? Jane Birkin? I wouldn’t rank myself alongside those women, but if the It Girls of yesteryear are still ‘It,’ I don’t think any of them lost what they made them unique.” They definitely haven’t, and we don’t think Alexa will either. We can’t wait to get our hands on this issue; well played Nylon!

Smoking turns e-chic…or does it?

Some call it a sickening, oft-glamourised anti-health hype; others simply refer to it as “having a fag”. However you choose to approach the issue of smoking, opinion will always be fiercely divided, and medical reasoning will always be at the fore. But that doesn’t stop the rich, famous and beautiful from going about their daily lives with a cigarette hanging from their mouths – a bit like a trusty friend, who’s always there in time of (nicotine-led) need. From a bouffanted Adele religiously puffing away backstage, to Kate Moss’s infamous smoky saunter down the runway during the Louis Vuitton AW11 show; cigarettes have almost become a “Don’t mess with me” status-cementing symbol. (We daren’t mess with either Mossy or Adele, for that matter.) Given celebrities spend half their lives being famous, and the other half getting papped, cigarette sightings are, inevitably, going to be high for the smokers, and the tobacco industry has had to move quickly to introduce ‘health-friendly’ (a term open to serious interpretation) alternatives. With users in the UK now exceeding the 1 million mark, electronic cigarettes have picked up pace, recruiting famous converts such as Alexa Chung, Zayn Malik and Robert Pattinson, to name a few. But how do they work? The technology isn’t as puzzling as it sounds. Battery operated; e-cigarettes work by heating a water-based e-liquid solution until it turns into an inhalable vapour. In fact, tobacco-free and exempt from the UK smoking ban, e-cigs contain less of the harmful substances found in traditional cigarettes, and produce an odourless water vapour, significantly reducing the dangers of passive smoking. But is this still enough to convince the masses? Given we often covet and consume trends that the A-list pack adopt (cue: Katherine Heigl getting excited over the “bejewelled bottom” of her e-cig on the Late […]

Ashley Madekwe steals the show at Longchamp Regent Street launch party

Miley Cyrus isn’t the only famous female to show off her washboard abs. Clearly the midriff-exposing fashions aren’t going anywhere anytime soon – at least not if Ashley Madekwe’s latest look is anything to go by! The stunning Revenge actress joined the likes of Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Suki Waterhouse and Coco Rocha at the opening of the Longchamp Regent Street store at the weekend, and definitely stole the show in her expertly put together ensemble. Ashley rocked up in a cute Paper London top, a Temperley London skirt, strappy Saint Laurent shoes, and of course paid tribute to the store she was visiting by carrying the Longchamp 3D bag in a perfectly skirt-matching shade of brown. Minimal accessories, glamorous shiny hair and fierce red lipstick completed her attention-grabbing look. Now we have been shamed to the gym, so if you will excuse us… [Image]

London Fashion Week SS14 Day 3 highlights

As always, the highlight of the day, nay, London Fashion Week as a whole, was the Mulberry show at the swanky Claridge’s hotel. We received a very sneaky preview of what to expect from the spring/summer 2014 collection via mood board (check it out here in case you missed it) so knew we were going to be in for a summery, floral treat. And the mood board certainly didn’t let us down! Emma Hill definitely made sure she went out with a bang wit her last collection at the helm of Mulberry. We even got a new, never-before-seen piece of arm candy too – the Kensal bag! This obviously won’t be the last you hear of that name, so watch this space! The Topshop Unique front row was probably the most star-studded of them all, with the likes of Kate Moss, Samantha Barks, Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe and of course Miss Anna Wintour among the famous faces looking on adoringly at the new collection. The nineties were back with a vengeance if Topshop has anything to say about it, as are bare backs, loose-fitting tops and shorts, mirror-detailing (which was reflected – no pun intended – in the mirror invitations we received) and fun prints. Jourdan Dunn’s look above was definitely our highlight of the entire collection! Over at Kate Middleton fave Emilia Wickstead, block pastel colours were the obvious runaway theme in the collection; clean yet exaggerated cuts and silhouettes dominated. Another favourite of the Middleton family is Alice Temperley, who presented a show-stopping Temperley London spring/summer 2014 collection, which was reportedly inspired by a recent trip to Sicily. Regal, embroidery, crystal embellishments, structure, precision and intricate attention to detail – we wouldn’t expect anything less! Elsewhere in London, Mary Katrantzou presented another bright, colourful, intricate collection in her […]

Gisele is Forbes highest paid supermodel for 7th year running

No prizes for guessing who the highest paid supermodel in the world is… Gisele Bundchen has once again found herself at the top of the Forbes list of highest earning supermodels for an impressive seventh consecutive year. She definitely puts the super in supermodel! Thanks to her deals with the likes of H&M, David Yurman, Chanel, Pantene and her own lingerie line, she has pocketed an impressive £27 million which means runner-up Miranda Kerr – who is worth an estimated £4.6 million – has a long way to go if she’s going to catch up with her. So who else made the Top 10 list, you ask? Adriana Lima came a very respectable third, while our very own Kate Moss, Liu Wen and Hilary Rhoda landed the respective 4th, 5th and 6th spots. The last four places went to Carolyn Murphy, Joan Smalls, Candice Swanepoel and Lara Stone. Alessandra Ambrosio and Doutzen Kroes slipped off the list this year, but Forbes predicts that they will be back with a vengeance next year; and apparently we shouldn’t be surprised if they are joined by Karlie Kloss and Kate Upton too. Twiggy! Fashion icon of the past and present

Still every bit as relevant in the year 2013 as she was in the 1960s, Twiggy is undoubtedly a fashion icon of the past and present. Twiggy, i.e. Lesley Lawson, was the one who said it was ok to wear dresses and skirts with barely there hemlines. She was the one who said it was ok to have both gravity defying and elfin cropped hair. She was the one who said it was ok to have over the top, almost unnatural looking eyelashes. And she was one of the first girls to prove that you can make it as a model without Kelly Brook style curves. Even if she wasn’t even born back then! Fast forward 50 years and several seasons of The Only Way is Essex and Keeping up with the Kardashians later, and those trends have come back with a vengeance… which just goes to show how ahead of her time she really was. Here are just a few reasons we love English fashion icon Twiggy: Where it all began; the Daily Express named her as The Face of ’66! Beautiful dreams; Twiggy records her first single Beautiful Dreams Twiggy Dresses; Forget Kate Moss for Topshop and the Kardashian Kollection for Dorothy Perkins… Twiggy beat all the celebs to it back in 1967 when she presented the first collection of her highly successful clothing line. Everyone wanted to look like her, and with the launch of her clothing collection, they could!  If that doesn’t scream “fashion muse” we don’t know what does! The cover star; akin to the year 2013, you knew you had made it if you found yourself on the cover of all the fashion glossies – and that’s exactly what happened to Twiggy in 1967. That iconic haircut and that doe-eyed face speak volumes! Life […]

Who is Gemma Refoufi?

There was a time when the world didn’t know who Cara Delevingne was, but the world soon learnt. And now we think Gemma Aicha Refoufi could very well be on her way to becoming the next Cara D. Cara got he big break when she posed for Mario Testino in her first Burberry ad campaign, and Gemma definitely had us paying attention to her when she appeared alongside Soo Joo, Zuzanna Bijoch and Herieth Paul for Tom Ford’s eccentric, Andy Warhol inspired autumn/winter 2013 ad campaign which the designer photographed himself. Gemma was born in Britain, but is a mixture of nationalities which probably contributes to her unique and stunning beauty. She was discovered by IMG Models, whose books boast the likes of Kate Moss, Miranda Kerr, Karlie Kloss, Gisele, Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks, Irina Shayk, Rosie Huntington Whiteley and more. So basically, she’s in good hands! And speaking of Mossy, former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld told Gemma that she could very well be the next Kate Moss, which is pretty much the biggest compliment any aspiring model can receive. We think you should remember the 24-year-old British model’s name because we predict you’ll be hearing a lot more of it in the not-so-distant future. You can follow her on Twitter (@gemrefoufi) to be kept in the loop.

Rihanna wins Topshop legal battle!

Good news for Rihanna – the Bajan singer has just won her court battle against Topshop, after she sued the high street store for unlawfully using a picture of her on one of their tops. The offending image was taken by a pap while Ri Ri was shooting her We Found Love video, and was uncannily similar to the one used on the CD sleeve which her legal team said might confuse fans. Case judge Mr Justice Briss (what a great first name for a judge!) said that while a famous person cannot control the reproduction of their image – and the photo didn’t breach her privacy – the fact that the shop didn’t seek her permission is what lost them the case. “The mere sale by a trader of a T-shirt bearing an image of a famous person is not, without more, an act of passing off,” he said. “However, the sale of this image of this person on this garment by this shop in these circumstances is a different matter. I find that Topshop’s sale of this Rihanna T-shirt without her approval was an act of passing off.” Topshop are obviously disappointed with the verdict… “We’re surprised and disappointed by the judgment handed down today,” a spokesperson for Topshop said. “We feel that the fact that Rihanna has shopped, worn and had a relationship with Topshop for several years appears to have been detrimental to our case. We robustly dispute the Judge’s conclusion. We believe that our customers clearly understand when we are undertaking a collaboration such as the one we created with Kate Moss over several seasons.” Hmm, will Topshop be appealing the decision? Watch this space! Whose side are you on? [Telegraph]

Jennifer Garner lands Allure’s September 2013 issue

Hoorah, the very first of the September issues has emerged (or leaked – whatever way you want to look at it), and it’s none other than the September issue of American beauty mag Allure. Allure has given the one and only Mrs Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, the September issue honour, which was a bold move considering we haven’t seen or heard a lot from her these days. Although Jen does look somewhat unrecognisable on the cover, we applaud the mag for not going overboard with the airbrushing and Photoshopping, as she looks fairly natural. Almost girl-next-door like, which is incidentally the look the magazine was going for. We showed you the August cover featuring our very own Kate Moss just last week, and although we think Jennifer Garner looks pretty flawless and have no doubt that she will shift more than a few copies for the mag, we stick by what we said last week…  Allure should have saved Mossy for the all-important September issue! What do you guys think? A good September cover choice or should our Croydon gal have done the honours?

Fashion Charts: What’s going up and what’s coming down this month

Up The bomber jacket: The hit summer cover-up, we’re digging the bomber jacket for its endless styling opportunities. Continuing fashion’s love affair with the sport luxe trend, we’re wearing ours with skinny jeans and a luxe tee by day, and statement earring and a sexy pencil skirt by night. Knuckle-nail rings: From Balenciaga’s lusted-after gold versions to pocket-pleasing high-street alternatives on the high street, knuckle rings have evolved into the next best thing: knuckle-nail rings, as seen on the Chanel Fall Couture 2013 runway. Yeah, couture on your nails is a thing, according to Kaiser Karl. Expensive baby shoes: With a ‘female hustler’ and the ‘king of hip hop’ for parents, you’re expected to have a more than average upbringing. Her Majesty, Blue Ivy Carter, has her own pair of TOM FORD heels. Yes, TOM FORD. Downsized to tot proportions, and modelled by her bootylicious mum. In other news, the world’s first billionaire couple reportedly splashed out a whopping (modest by Jay-B standards) $7,500 on presents for Baby Kimye, including a pair of Christian Dior booties. Moss mania: Although she’s been everywhere since being discovered at the tender age of 14, Kate Moss continues to rule everything, everywhere. From taking over the Stuart Weitzman and Versace AW13 campaigns to teaming up with Carphone Warehouse on a new fashion-tech accessories line and going under the hammer (sort of) at Christie’s. Budget Alaia’s (well, kind of): We’ve been drooling over the real deal, and promptly heading to Zara to snap up the pocket-friendly version! We’re in love with complex, lace up sandals that look like a lot of hard work to slip into, but once you’ve got them on, there’s no coming off. Down Over-the-top underdressing: Oh, Rihanna. Bad, bad Rihanna. Rocking up to Chanel Couture (!) in nothing more than a […]

Diane Kruger covers Marie Claire UK’s August issue

Looking slightly reminiscent of Kate Moss on one of her many Vogue covers, Marie Claire UK’s August cover star is none other than the gorgeous Diane Kruger. You know you’re onto a winner as far as pics, the interview and magazine sales are concerned when you have Diane Kruger on board. As usual, the extremely photogenic actress is looking stunning in each and every pic, and her interview is as insightful as it is candid. Diane spoke to the mag about boyfriend Joshua Jackson, as well as film, fame, and fashion. And of course Diane, who is practically BFFs with Karl Lagerfeld and is omnipresent on a Chanel FROW, also divulged about her relationship with the iconic French fashion House… “I started modelling for them when I was 15,” she said. “I know everyone there on a first-name basis. They were the first ones to send me clothes when I started out as an actress. And loyalty is so rare in our business that it make sense to be supportive. It’s not always about money. “You can be as cynical as you want about filmmaking or fashion but at the end of the day fashion makes people dream, it makes women look beautiful, and it can be a wonderful creative outlet.” She speaks the truth, does our Diane. And doesn’t she look incredible in her pics? Marie Claire UK’s August issue is out from today, so go down to your nearest newsagent right now, or just head to the website to find out how you can download the digital edition for your iPad or other tablet.

Daisy Lowe sizzles at Serpentine summer soiree

Only the gorgeous model daughter of a fashion icon would be able to wear what is essentially a table cloth with a dodgy halter neck and make it look absolutely phenomenal. Daisy Lowe looked stunning as she attended the Serpentine Gallery Summer Party at the Kensington Gardens last night; grabbing our attention was no easy feat either considering some of the other famous guests in attendance included Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Georgia May Jagger. Daisy let the dress do all the talking – or, shouting, in this case – by ruling out accessories altogether. We did spy a matchy-matchy manicure though, which deserves some brownie points, as does her decision to leave her beautiful brunette locks tumbling effortlessly over her shoulders. Gorgeous, no?

Isabel Marant collaborates with H&M!

Miranda Kerr and Kate Moss are two of her most famous (not to mention beautiful) fans, but now it looks like the rest of us can step out in an Isabel Marant design too as she is joining forces with H&M for what we know will be an epic collaboration. How good is that? We can’t wait to see what the French designer, i.e she of those effortlessly chic yet contemporary and ethnic collections, has up her sleeve for her collaboration with the Swedish retailer. “I am creating something real, that women want to wear in their everyday lives, with a certain carelessness, which I think is very Parisian: you dress up, but do not pay too much attention and still look sexy,” Isabel said. “The collection is infused with this kind of easiness and attitude. Everything can be mixed following one’s own instincts: my take on fashion is all about personality.” We can expect to see the H&M x Isabel Marant collaboration (which will include clothes and accessories for both men and women!) launch on November 14th – book the day off work and don’t forget where you put the tent after the summer festivals because you’re going to want to queue all night for this one; we predict an instant sell-out! Are Cara Delevingne and Rita Ora designing a clothing line?

The big question on everyone’s lips this morning is: Are BFFs Cara Delevingne and Rita Ora designing a clothing line together? If we are to believe The Sun (meh), then yes they are – and that is our cue to start celebrating! “Rita and Cara have been talking about the idea for weeks now,” a source allegedly told the red top. “Cara has great fashion industry contacts and Rita loves her clothes and keeps up with trends. “They think a line could compete with those released by Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss. Rita’s become increasingly matey with Chloe Green and has mentioned the idea to her in the hope that she might help get it to her dad, Topshop boss Philip.” We definitely think befriending Chloe Green is a step in the right direction. We’d love to see a Rita x Cara clothing line. Expect snap back caps, wedge trainers, printed trousers, loud logo tees, and more! Hopefully a more official source will step in to confirm or deny these rumours. Fingers crossed it’s the former! [Grazia]

Highlights from John Galliano’s first interview since ‘those’ comments…

Channing Tatum is looking like a godly hunk on the front cover of Vanity Fair’s July issue, but there’s an even bigger reason to head to the shops and by the mag: John Galliano’s first ever interview since the you know what scandal back in 2011. The designer speaks candidly about those infamous anti-Semitic comments, the aftermath, his alcohol dependency, how Kate Moss “saved” him, and how he’s turning what happened into a positive. Here are a few highlights from one of the most highly anticipated interviews the fashion world has ever seen: On the infamous anti Semitic remarks in the Paris café: “When everyone came over to tell me that I had done these terrible things, I was walking round and round and round not really knowing what had gone down,” he said. “My assistant told me about the video. When I saw it, I threw up. The feeling was like I was about to take a step out onto the street and a bus or truck whooshed past me and the blood was drained from my legs. I was paralysed from the fear. I have been trying to find out why that anger was directed at this race. I now realise I was so f***ing angry and so discontented with myself that I just said the most spiteful thing I could.” On pills and alcohol: “I never drank in order to be creative, or to do the research. I didn’t need alcohol for any of that. At first alcohol was like a crutch outside of Dior. Then I would use it to crash after the collections. I’d take a couple of days to get over it, like everyone. But with more collections, the crash happened more often, and then I was a slave to it. Then the pills […]

5 films which changed the face of fashion

Fashion and film have always gone hand in hand, and some of the most iconic moments in fashion have been captured on the big screen, from Audrey Hepburn’s classic little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Marilyn Monroe’s ruffled white dress in The Seven Year Itch. It’s not surprising that a lot of the world’s greatest fashion designers have been heavily influenced by films from various genres across the decades. So which films made fashion what it is today? 1. A Clockwork Orange and Jean Paul Gaultier You might not imagine Stanley Kubrick’s dark and difficult cult classic ‘A Clockwork Orange’ to have had a profound influence on the world of fashion, but the bizarre and oddly intimidating cricket whites, white shirts and bowler hats of Alex and the Droogs inspired one of the most influential fashion designers of modern times. The actor Malcolm McDowell who played protagonist Alex bumped into Jean Paul Gaultier at a film festival who profusely thanked him for his costume, “Thank you very much, because that film changed my whole design.” he said. 2. Chinatown and John Rocha Roman Polanski’s Chinatown made in 1974 in John Rocha’s eyes is “One of the all-time great movies on every level.” The film has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for films that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” which gives a good indicator of just how brilliant this film is lauded to be. For John Rocha it is Jack Nicholson who is the embodiment of the film. “He is super-cool and sharp but at the same time it is totally effortless.” Such is the influence of Nicholson’s suit, trilby and sunglasses combo that every time Rocha makes a menswear collection he thinks about how Nicholson would […]

Rihanna for River Island, take two: Here’s what we really think!

After enticing Ri-wannabe’s with her debut collection for River Island, the queen of everything is back with more fashion to feed our sartorial souls. Following her hotly anticipated London Fashion Week show, Rihanna’s summer collection for high street giant, River Island finally landed in stores and online on May 25, and after sizing up the fashion credentials of the superstar’s wares, we naturally weighed in with our own opinion. Celebrity-retail giant collaborations are often a frightening matter, with more questions circulating through the fashion press than pieces in the collection itself: did she/he design it? Is it a touch-and-go type of thing? It is even a real depiction of the celebrity in question? But Rihanna, a star in the off-stage style stakes without a doubt, knows a thing or two about constructing a dress to perfectly show of her envious bod, or how cropped a crop top should really be, in order to show the extent of work she’s putting in at the gym. Returning to the real stuff, the summer collection is a mix of staple pieces we often see the Bajan beauty sporting, punctuated with splashes of print, statement embellishment and jolts of colour. The collection really is the epitome of summer, with a lack of longer hemlines (probably owing to Rihanna’s love of flesh flashing), and nearly everything is either sheer, or sports a slit or a spindly strap. Much of the collection harks back to some iconic looks worn by Rihanna, which have now become a recognisable part of her signature style. Take the floral boys shorts, for example, which take us back Ri’s Alexander Wang leather shorts and tee look at the Battleship photo call in Sydney. Or the black stiletto sandals from the collection, which are reminiscent of Rihanna’s love affair with the Manolo […]

Kerry Washington shows off her hot bod in Marc Jacobs for Elle US

As much as we love seeing our favourite models and actresses (i.e. Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow respectively) on the front cover of fashion magazines, it’s a welcoming breath of fresh air when we get a new face on our glossies. This is why we were positively thrilled to find out that red-carpet queen Kerry Washington was chosen to front Elle US‘s June cover. And in a gorgeous Marc Jacobs number, no less. We love it! The Scandal actress shows off her ridiculously toned bod and seemingly never-ending legs on the Horst Diekgerdes lensed cover, as well as in the editorial, and opens up to the mag about her current Hollywood career, and how it isn’t quite what she thought she would be going with her life… “I imagined I’d be a clinical psychologist, with a focus on how performance shapes identity,” she said. I’d figure out ways to use role-playing in the healing of people. “I’m the luckiest broad in Hollywood now. To be the lead actor on Scandal and to be in the highest-earning Tarantino movie – I don’t get to ask for more.” We love a humble star. Somehow we don’t think this is the peek of her career yet, we reckon there’s definitely more to come!

Gemma Arterton vs. Shailene Woodley vs. Amber Valletta: Who wore Stella McCartney better?

Judging by the popularity of a particular Stella McCartney ensemble, it’s a triple fash-off this week! Spotted in the same form-fitting Stella McCartney tuxedo jumpsuit, actresses Gemma Arterton, Shailene Woodley and model Amber Valletta have firmly fallen on our style radar. Cast your minds way back to February 2012, when Stella McCartney threw THAT lavish party during London Fashion Week (the one that included crazy, models-dancing-on-tables antics, and a very cosy looking Rihanna and Kate Moss). Attendee Amber Valletta was the first to slip into the tux jumpsuit for the event, oozing every bit the model glamour she’s carved a successful career out of. A simple black clutch and ankle strap heels accessorised the look, whilst slicked back hair and strong eyes completed the look. Shailene Woodley gave the tux jumpsuit its next outing at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, last June. Styled with Stella McCartney sandals (natch), Shailene opted for a messy fishtail plait and went sans accessories. And, finally in the fash-off line-up, Brit beauty Gemma Arterton wore the tux jumpsuit to the 2012 British Fashion Awards back in November. Styled with wedges by the same designer, a handheld cross-body bag and an orange bracelet, Gemma sported softly tousled waves and neutral makeup. But whose look steals the fash-off champion title? We’re rooting for Gemma on this one for one simple reason: she oozes oodles of confidence, whereas Amber and Shailene – who look equally as amazing – seem a little vanilla in comparison. The alternative thought to styling and soft curls bring a feminine edge to the near-androgynous style of the tux jumpsuit, and Gemma gets the balance just right! Whose look wins for you?

Is Louis Vuitton really promoting prostitution?

I suspect when designers release their seasonal campaigns to match what the fash pack feasted their eyes on during fashion month, they prepare for both a backlash and endless praise. Endless praise from their main advertising buddies, who create bumper issues spilling with lithe models sprawled across a beach, or, if we’re talking about the Dolce duo then ‘real’ Italians having a good time. And naturally, a backlash from those more critical of the brazen approach fashion stories take. One in question this week is the latest video from luxury French fashion house, Louis Vuitton, the collaborative effort of Katie Grand and film maker James Lima (see video below) showcasing the models in runway looks from the autumn/winter 2013 collection. But it isn’t the negligee-inspired outfits that resulted in an outcry, but rather that the actions of the models – many in a state of drunkenness and undress – roaming dingy alleyways and being accosted by suspect, slow moving cars. Accused of glamorising prostitution by a letter in left wing newspaper, Liberation, the short film is charged with “assimilating luxury with the world’s second most profitable criminal activity after drug trafficking”. Now this isn’t surprising, given the industry’s habit of flirting with fire and redirecting often dangerous ideals in a playful, light-hearted way, dressed up in the froufrou of fashion. But such criticism also gives rise to many other aspects of fashion that raise more than a brow. Firstly, Katie Grand is a name synonymous with the alternative and ever so risqué this side of the Channel, and her tome, LOVE, doesn’t strictly abide by pre-watershed rules. With this in mind, the nature of the short film becomes more understandable: Grand pushes normality and ideals to their limits (lip-locking models, a near naked Kate Moss). After all, she is the woman who […]

Eva Mendes is the new face (and eyes) of Vogue Eyewear

Kate Moss did a cracking job of modelling Vogue Eyewear, so you might think it would be hard for her replacement to live up to expectations… but not when her replacement is none other than Eva Mendes! Eva was shot by Mario Testino in a gorgeous West Hollywood setting for the spring/summer 2013 campaign images, and is oozing glamour, elegance and all-round sexiness in each and every pic. “I really love glasses,” Eva said.  “Whether they are prescription glasses or sunglasses, they are an extension of your personality and such a fantastic accessory I love to mix and match and play with different looks, depending on my mood and my outfit. “My favourites are frames that have a slightly retro feel, specifically a little wink to the 50s, 60s or 70s. I’ve only recently had to have prescription eyeglasses, and honestly, I love it!” We would too if we had all those fabulous frames to choose from! Do you like Eva’s campaign? [Sassi Sam]

Paris Fashion Week AW13 highlights from Elie Saab, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu and more

That’s it, guys – Paris Fashion Week officially drew to a close last night, and Fashion Month has come to an end. It’s been emotional! Before we get the tissues out and sob uncontrollably, we still have highlights from the final day to cover, as the Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, Vionnet and Elie Saab autumn/winter 2013 collections made their way down the catwalks of Paris. Louis Vuitton kicked the final day of PFW proceedings off in slouchy style, as sleepwear seemed to be a big theme given all the bathrobes that came out. Marc Jacobs even slipped into his own red jammies at the end of the show too – pretty interesting! But perhaps the best thing about the Louis Vuitton show was the big finish – we’re not talking fireworks or pyrotechnics, we’re talking the one and only Kate Moss walking down the runway and modelling the final look. She’s still got it! And speaking of big, spectacular finishes, Lebanese designer Elie Saab gave us something to remember by presenting a host of wow-worthy red-carpet-ready gowns fit for Princesses and Hollywood royalty. We think Elie Saab truly deserves the task of closing Fashion Month – what a way to end it! Louis Vuitton Miu Miu  Vionnet

Where was Hedi headed?

Well, what a week it’s been at Paris Fashion Week, and, although Wang’s debut at Balenciaga was rolling off the tip of everyone’s tongue, it was Hedi Silmane’s second collection since taking the helm at Yves Saint Laurent that got fashion gossip stirring. So, what did you make of Slimane’s second design offering for the Parisian fashion powerhouse? Shunning the legendary French chic the brand has built its identity upon, Slimane went down the route he knows best: grunge, and unapologetically Californicated at that. Critics haven’t been too kind either, slamming the autumn/winter collection shown in Paris on Monday for straying too far from what has come to be expected of the iconic brand. But all wasn’t lost to negative review. Courtney Love tweeted her affection for the collection, dubbing it ‘rich ladies buying what we used to wear’. But that shouldn’t come as surprise  given Love’s naturally grungy aesthetic, along with front rowers Alison Mosshart and Sky Ferreira, who similarly didn’t have much to complain about. Notably, Jess Cartner-Morley of The Guardian described the appearance of grunge on Parisian runway space, where sophistication reigns supreme and straying from the highbrow approach to dressing is by no means considered the norm, as ‘an abstract concept’. This asks the question, then, whether Hedi’s departure from the accepted ways of the Parisian fashion set was a deliberate act to assert his arrival at the house. But he could’ve done that in his debut collection, right? Unsurprisingly, assertion has been a key theme this season; Simons asserted his famed sensitivity at Dior, Wang, by injecting the wearability at Balenciaga, and, of course now, Hedi. I can’t help but mention here, that Tom Ford’s excitably eclectic autumn/winter ’13 collection had that two-finger attitude witnessed at Saint Laurent, or, as I like to call it, the […]

The different faces of fashion snobbery

Along with next season’s offerings, this week has been filled with tales of an adventurous nature. Kim Kardashian has been a frequenter on my social media timeline, as has comeback couturier, John Galliano. So what’s the connection between the two, you ask? One of fashion snobbery and its many faces, I say. It was reported earlier this week that Kim Kardashian’s shoot for the March issue of ELLE US was, to a certain extent, hampered ever so slightly by the lack of designer pieces her stylist was able to pull. The stylist in question, Nicola Formichetti, is Lady Gaga’s fashion friend and creative director of Mugler, and a fashion force to be reckoned with in the industry. So, why the problem to pull pieces for a relatively standard shoot for someone of Formichetti’s fashion calibre? Well, his explanation was Kim’s ‘not the ‘It’ girl yet, but she will be’. Really? I guess this comes down to how we define the term ‘‘It’ girl’. With a public profile such as Kim Kardashian’s (given that major brands thrive off even bigger personalities) and her major outreach to an extended fan base (she surely has partial support and love from Kanye’s fans, too) that amounts to a Twitter following in excess of 17 million, it shouldn’t be impossible to figure out. Isn’t an ‘It’ girl emblazoned across everything, everywhere (cue: previously relatively unknown Cara Delevingne now tipped as the next Karlie Kloss/Kate Moss)? Isn’t her name supposed to roll off every tongue, appearance shift a thousand products and boyfriend supposed to be the world’s number one rapper? An argument about Kim’s rapidly expanding curves seemed to have seeped into the conversation, but people like Kate Upton would void such an idea. After all, hips or no hips, Upton isn’t the average size zero […]

Yay or Nay: Charlotte Olympia Dolly Feather Platform Pumps

Her box clutches, Alexa-approved Kitty flats and the instantly recognisable gold metallic platform underlining her quirky designs have acquired a cult following. And taking you into new season, Charlotte Olympia’s creativity once again knows no bounds. It’s safe to say that the Dolly Feather platform pumps more than caught our eye! Exploring a rainbow spectrum of colour, these heels are conversation starters, and we can only suspect to see a few pairs popping up around fashion month. Adopting the classic Dolly shape and heels, goose feathers artfully line the shoe’s exterior to give that 90s tropical tie dye look (see how she expertly revived the era of grunge with not a single plaid shirt or Kate Moss reference in sight?), whilst a red suede platform and blue leather heel amp up the colour credentials. But such out-there shoes do come with their limitations, especially if you’re not a repeat (fashion) offender. Although statement shoes are considered an investment, where do you draw the line with footwear that makes both your imagination and wardrobe run wild? We round up the reasons we’re screaming YAY, and why sensible Sally who lives in the part of our brain dedicated to shopping (that’s almost all of it, then) is quietly whispering NAY to these wake-me-up CO’s: Yay Perfect for amping up an LBD: Yes, just that. If you don’t like to veer into colour territory when getting ready to go out, and prefer an understated outfit, then loud heels or accessories could be all you need. The Dolly Feather Pumps would be the perfect way to pep up a simple party look without adding anything else. Shoe investor paradise: Remember all those times when your mum would gently advise you to stop spending your life savings on in-then-out, bunion-inducing footwear, and instead save up […]

First look: Miranda Kerr for Mango!

Five minutes with Isabella Oliver’s Baukjen de Swaan Arons

Founder and Creative Director of Isabella Oliver and the fashion brand Baukjen, Baujken Swaan Arons set up her company in 2003 out of sheer frustration, caused by the lack of stylish maternity wear available on the market. Nearly a decade later, and with a cult celebrity following, Isabella Oliver is bigger than ever and every discerning fashionista’s go-to name for comfortable and stylish pieces. My Fashion Life caught up with Baukjen to talk party season style, fashionable mums and wardrobe staples. Your womenswear brand was called Isabella Oliver 365 before being reintroduced as Baukjen. Tell us what inspired this change in name? Originally, our womenswear collection evolved from the Isabella Oliver maternity line. It grew so much faster than we’d ever imagined and we felt it needed its own space to live and breathe. Separating the brands gives them both the space to grow to their full potential. Name three wardrobe staples you cannot live without. A leather biker jacket is an essential and a modern classic; our Agyness Leather Jacket has jersey inserts so its gives a great fit. I wear it over day looks but also over more dressy evening outfits. Black ankle boots work with everything – leather leggings, jersey dresses, jeans and t-shirts – I’m constantly wearing mine. I love stripes and this season I’m wearing them in jersey. Our caramel and black striped dress is great for quick and easy everyday style. I wear it over leggings, ankle boots and pop the black Maryna Blazer over it and add long necklaces. Isabella Oliver Maternity was set up to provide stylish pieces for expectant mums; what experiences led you to specifically choose this market? When I was pregnant with my first child it was very difficult to find stylish maternity wear that reflected my usual style. […]

Miranda Kerr is the new face of Mango!

Kate Moss may be getting on a bit in supermodel terms, but she definitely isn’t short of job offers. She is however, being replaced by a younger model as far as Mango is concerned, as Miranda Kerr will become the new face of the brand for the spring 2013 season. We doubt there are any hard feelings though, as Mossy is a very busy lady with all her other modelling projects, new book, possible documentary, and family among other things. We’re excited to see what Miranda brings to the table, aren’t you? “Mango is a brand that I love,” Miranda said in a statement. “You always find the perfect garment for every occasion!” While Kate was shot by Terry Richardson for Mango, the brand has enlisted the help of legendary photography duo Inez & Vinoodh to take Miranda’s pics. Five Minutes With Designer Marios Schwab

Yesterday we showed you all eight gorgeous looks from the highly anticipated Marios Schwab for Debenhams Edition collection, and as promised, it’s now time to treat you to the interview we conducted with the main man himself. We managed to peel Marios away from the launch of the collection for five minutes, and asked him to talk us through the range in his very own words. We also asked him about his muses for the collection and what his absolute favourite dress was… he even divulged some interesting and unmissable styling advice! So without further ado, we present you with five minutes with the legend that is Mr Marios Schwab. Enjoy! Tell us, how did this amazing collaboration come about and why did you want to go ahead with it? Well I’ve been asked from Debenhams to do a capsule collection of signature key looks that are an interpretation of the Marios Schwab brand, and it was interesting to meet a completely different customer and adapt signature key pieces from the signature of the brand. I certainly want to make people dream when they wear my stuff and feel enhanced and elevated because that’s what fashion should be about; it should feel like you’re living a true fantasy. What’s the typical customer for the collection? It’s for somebody who is quite specific; the customer is very fashion conscious and she likes to look at fashion from a different angle and it was interesting for me too as it was a learning curve and it was an open minder. You need to challenge yourself in different ways of producing the garments and it was really interesting to do it together with the Debenhams team. Were there any challenges? There’s always certain obstacles that you’re going to meet from a project that’s […]
