Harrods sold for £1.5 billion

Despite insisting in March that Harrods was not for sale – to the point he said he’d be buried there – Mohamed al Fayed has sold the iconic London department store to the investment group owned by the Qatari royal family for a reported £1.5 billion.

Victoria Beckham: world’s most glamorous celebrity?

Is Victoria Beckham the most glamorous girl in town? You bet she is, and it’s not just us saying it, it’s a fact. She’s topped Max Factor’s glamour poll, earning her the rather impressive title of the World’s Most Glamorous Celebrity. And when she wandered back on the streets of London this week, she proved why she pipped the likes of Dannii Minogue and Angelina Jolie to the post. Black ruffle minidress from label-du-jour Isabel Marant? Towering nude platforms? A pair of VB sunglasses? It seems her days in fashion have paid off – oh, Ms. Beckham, you’ve exceeded yourself. “Victoria Beckham has been gracing the fashion pages for years now with her glamorous looks and she has designed her own clothes range,” a spokesperson for Max Factor told InStyle. “She never leaves home without being fully made up and her signature glossy pout has become her calling card.” Frankly, we’d expect nothing less.

Boutique by Jaeger Press Day

Get ready for a new lust-have label to add to your list as British heritage brand Jaeger plan to launch their new Boutique range. We went along to their press day recently to take a look at this hotly anticipated new collection as well as having a peek at their mainline offerings for the new season. Inspired by their iconic 60s young Jaeger range the collection has been re-interpreted for today’s modish young Londoner. Boasting the quality and fabrics of the Jaeger we know so well, the Boutique line adds a contemporary rock-n-roll vibe to this classic British brand. An array of trousers, dresses, blouses, jackets and coats in tailored wool, laminated tweed, electric-blue silks and edgy prints make for a surprising yet totally covetable collection. It manages to marry sixties spirit with a contemporary edge without losing sight of Jaeger’s rich heritage. What’s most exciting is that the collection really speaks to a younger buyer with trend driven pieces in dazzling fabrics and retro styling. While the pricing is 30-50% less than their mainline offerings, the price tag at Jaeger Boutique is still a little steep for the twenty-something crowd they’re aiming to capture. There’s no doubt we’ll fall in love with it, but it may be a case of one investment piece once in a while rather than a must-have off the rail purchase every week. Although that electric blue silk dress is doing a good job of persuading me to ignore the bills and buy it anyway…

The sell out’ sleep in a bottle’ face cream

After seeing all kinds of face creams and reading up on the latest collagen mask treatment reviews, we’re happy to say that a new face cream that promises to rejuvenate skin overnight is landing on our shelves. Better yet, after the chocolate-filled Easter weekend we’ve had, we’re desperate to get our pampered paws on it. Though that might be a problem. A favourite among the stars, including Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Lopez, Tamara Mellon and Kelly Osbourne, StriVectin Overnight Resurfacing Serum is the new must-have beauty buy – but it’s selling out across the UK fashionably fast. “We had a huge waiting list at Harvey Nichols in London, well before we had even started to drum up publicity for the brand,” a spokeswoman for StriVectin said of the cream, which uses prickly pears and pink seaweed to revive skin as you sleep. “Now there are waiting lists across the country,” she continued. “People these days are very savvy when it comes to splashing out on expensive creams and, I guess, they do their research.” According to the Telegraph, the ‘sleep in a bottle’ cream is currently available at luxury stores, including Harvey Nichols and Harrods, for £49. Let the hunt begin.

Exclusive Talk with Kenneth Cole

Hear the name Kenneth Cole Productions Inc. and you might be mistaken into thinking that successful fashion entrepreneur Kenneth Cole is a film producer rather than a shoe designer – it’s an easy assumption to make. But Kenneth Cole isn’t of course a film producer; he’s the fashion designer and businessman behind the label of nearly thirty years. A well-known name in America, Kenneth visited London recently to give an exclusive talk at the London College of Fashion to share some of the secrets behind his success. As Kenneth talked about his brand it was clear that the stereotypical fashion designer persona was far from the business minded man delivering the talk. Cole admits that, ‘People don’t get much more than to judge you on how you present yourself,’ but as he talked about his path to success it emerged that Kenneth Cole is as much about delivering a social commentary as a fabulous pair of shoes. Cole is a master of witty advertising puns, which is something that has become synonymous with the brand – some campaigns of which he penned himself, and many of which are cut through with a sharp social commentary. A significant AIDS campaigner, one of Cole’s advertising billboards following 9/11 read, ‘On September 12, 14,000 people still contracted HIV.’ Commenting on the advertising ethos of the brand, Cole recalls the beginnings of the company in 1982: ‘I wanted to connect the brand to something bigger than what we did.’ His acute sense of realism following 9/11 was, understandably, too much for a country in mourning but the message was not new. Kenneth describes himself as a creative problem solver , a trait that marks many of the milestones of his career , none so significant perhaps as his debut into the world of fashion. […]

MFL’s top 5 gadget accessories

Fashion and function are terms that regularly cross paths but only recently have we seen an influx of designers getting creative with technology. Not only are fashion houses and retailers bridging the gap between catwalks and the consumer by launching phone applications, tweeting on a regular basis and live streaming fashion week shows; they’re putting their names to a whole host of products, making our day-to-day technological appliances that little bit nicer to look at. From Fendi to Gareth Pugh, we can honestly say that the contents of our handbag have never looked so well dressed. See our top five gadget accessories, below: Mulberry Daria sleeve for 13″ MacBook It might look like an oversized clutch, but this sleeve, inspired by Mulberry’s Daria range, was designed in collaboration with Apple to protect your MacBook. When did practical ever look so pretty? £350 from Mulberry. AnOther iPhone shell by Gareth Pugh for Incase Gareth Pugh designed this monochrome iPhone case as part of his capsule collection for AnOther magazine and Parisian boutique colette, which brings together fashion and technology in a limited edition, bold aesthetic. Pugh’s graphic was also added to a 13″ MacBook pro sleeve, which incorporates his signature star print. £53 from AnOther Shop. Jaeger BlackBerry case Replacing the BlackBerry case that I so carelessly lost a few months ago, is this bright number from Jaeger. Available in orange and lemon yellow, it also makes finding the damn thing in the depths of an oversized tote much easier. Hurrah! £20 – £25 from Jaeger. Fendi laptop case So, apparently the Mulberry MacBook sleeve is only fit for an Apple but this Fendi neoprene laptop case isn’t so prejudiced. The hot pink protector features a zip pocket and is perfect for the girly girl on her commute. £225 from Net-a-Porter. […]

Down the Rabbit Hole for the Tom Binns collection

We’d already been given a sneak preview of the Tom Binns collaboration with Disney Couture jewellery, so when we were invited to a private view of the new Alice in Wonderland film and the accompanying jewellery collection we couldn’t decide which we were more excited to see. When we weren’t mingling with other guests, including LFW favourite Erdem and boutique owner Brix Smith Start, we managed to get a good look at the jewellery on show. The range is made up of two collections, the first being a high-end limited edition collection, and the second for Disney’s popular jewellery line. The second is made up of about 35 pieces that range from trinket filled charm bracelets to quirky rings and necklaces inspired by all of our favourite Wonderland characters. Especially covetable is an oversized gold keyhole necklace with cut-out detailing that hangs on the end of a long chain, which Daisy Lowe wore to last week’s London premiere of the film. But perhaps the most stunning pieces are from to the limited edition signature collection, which comprises 6 pieces based on the significant characters in the story. My personal favourite is a necklace inspired by the Red Queen , a real showpiece that is made up of hundreds of tiny red resin hearts joined together. As for the much-awaited film, our expectations weren’t disappointed either, as Tim Burton’s adaptation was a real treat. The gothic costumes and impressive mix of animation and reality made for a really visually indulgent film. In true Burton style, the characters were tinged with a sinister darkness and watching it in 3D really felt like we’d taken that trip down the rabbit hole too. Both collections are available now at Selfridges and some of the Tom Binns for Disney couture is available from ASOS.com, accessories […]

Fight Cervical Cancer in Style

Last night, some of the biggest names in fashion and music joined hands to hold a star-studded extravaganza for Fight Cervical Cancer in Style, a national campaign which helps to raise awareness about the disease and teach women how to reduce their risk. In case you don’t already know, this week is European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, and getting London’s ball rolling is PM’s wife Sarah Brown, whose charity Wellbeing of Women, alongside Jo’s Trust, is backing the campaign. We popped down to Camden’s Koko nightclub to take a peek at the pop-performances on offer and feast our eyes on some fabulous fashion from London-cool label PPQ, who put on a colourful catwalk comprising their favourite looks for spring. So as models strutted their stuff in this season’s hottest looks and some of Britain’s biggest chart-toppers belted out their hottest hits, our focus turned to what they were wearing , we’re fighting in style, after all. From the ever-quirky Paloma Faith who wore a glittery red ‘P’ hat with matching heart balloons tied to her wrist, to Pixie Lott in a classic LBD, La Roux in a matching top and bottom 80s-inspired ensemble by Basso and Brooke, and the Sugababes who barely wore a thing, their styles were worlds apart. But one thing linked them together: these pop princesses, alongside our hosts for the evening Lauren Laverne and Miquita Oliver, are raising awareness of cervical cancer and helping to educate young women about the disease, which kills three women everyday in the UK alone. “We’re delighted with the amount of celebrity support that has been forthcoming for this important campaign, Robert Music, Director of Jo’s Trust, says. “Cervical cancer can be a devastating disease and may not have any symptoms until it is quite advanced, so it’s essential that girls […]

Galliano Menswear

Whether he’s wearing it or sending it down the catwalk, John Galliano‘s got a signature style that’s as far fetched as fashion gets. Now, the Dior creative director is turning his design marvel to menswear for a second time. As more designers brainstorm pieces for the boys , most recently Victoria Beckham and Matthew Williamson , King of Couture John Galliano has announced a new, lower-priced diffusion line for men which will sit alongside his current menswear and womenswear offerings. His inspiration? Himself. “I was inspired by memories of my twenty-year old self,” Galliano told Vogue UK of the collection, called ‘Galliano’. “I was fashion-obsessed yet starved of choice in clothes. We used to take our vintage market finds and pull them apart and recombine them to create our own mixed-up signature looks.” Aimed at men who want to express their own ideas and identity through their style, Galliano’s contemporary offering attempts to capture the attitude of the London rock scene. “It’s not just the girls who want to party and be able to pepper their wardrobe with urban essentials, the boys want this option too – and to have those pieces in denim, leather and something that has that quirky signature Galliano identity. They want high fashion but not the high fashion prices, so I wanted to create a collection that could inspire as much as bridge that gap.” The new collection will launch at Milan Menswear Fashion Week on January 18.
