Meanwhile, newcomer Graeme Black scooped the top prize of Scottish Designer of the Year.

Vanessa Hudgens’ fashion experiment

Vanessa Hudgens loves getting dressed up. The ‘High School Musical’ actress likes to experiment with fashion and wouldn’t be happy wearing the same outfit day after day. Vanessa – who works with Hollywood stylist Deborah Waknin – said: ‘I’ve used her forever and I’m in love with her! She completely gets me, which is really hard, I think. I’m not very typical; I like my own thing. I’m not content with wearing a T-shirt and jeans every day. I love fashion and I love playing with it.’

‘Opinionated’ Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga pestered stylist B. Akerlund until she agreed to work with her. Akerlund had taken a break from the fashion world to have twins when the outrageous ‘Poker Face’ singer contacted her and offered her a personal stylist job. Gaga refused to give up when Akerlund rejected the opportunity and continued to approach her every time she was shooting a new music promo until Akerlund agreed. Akerlund revealed to Anthem magazine: ‘I have no idea how she knew about me. She just said she knew. I asked her, ‘How do you know that we’re so perfect for each other?’ and she said, ‘I just know.’ Now she is like a sister that I never had.’

Graduate Fashion Week 2009

My first day at Graduate Fashion Week, front row seats and the excitement I had been promised. With six shows to attend I had a fashion-filled day, the Universities being Epsom, Manchester, Ravensbourne, De Montfort, Somerset and Bristol. Models strutted down the catwalk to pounding music, dimmed lights and a flash of cameras as they made it to the end of the runway. There were numerous trends which continued to repeat themselves not only throughout the designers attending the same Universities but as a theme throughout the schools.

Little Boots’ sleepy secret

Little Boots thinks she ‘looks nice’ when she sleeps in her make-up. The ‘New In Town’ singer often goes to bed without cleansing her skin after a night of partying because she likes the way she looks the next morning. She said: ‘Sometimes if you sleep in your make-up it can look quite cool, or you might just look like a dirty stop-out. Many a morning I’ve still been a bit drunk, I looked in the mirror and thought I looked really nice.’

Vogue to the rescue!

The economic downturn has got us all in a bit of a mess. But never fear because Vogue are here to save the day and save the world. Ok, so that might be a slight exaggeration but it’s not far off. Vogue, the CFDA, NYC & Company and Mayor Bloomberg are calling on retailers around the world to open their shops up later on 10th September. The idea is that cities everywhere will host ‘Fashion’s Night Out’, and stores will open late, receptions and parties will be held all in the hope that the recession will get a good stiletto clad kicking.

Well, we wish Heidi and Seal the best of luck, and you just know this baby will be gorgeous. They are the cutest family. [

Johnny Blue Eyes: Bringing democracy to fashion

I’m seated at the entrance of Nandos in Shepherds Bush. This is fashion stylist, Johnny Blue Eyes’ favourite restaurant. It’s also his local. Born and bred in Shepherd’s Bush, Johnny has lived in the area all his life, although he does flit between his home town and New York. As he approaches the door I recognise him instantly. His long thick dark hair is a major giveaway. He’s wearing a hoodie paired with leather trousers, accessorized with a big buckled belt and carrying a large oversized bag. Johnny greets me so warmly that I feel immediately comfortable in his presence. At 41, he describes himself as an artist first and foremost, however his love for dressing up has played a major part in his path down the road of fashion. Johnny is perhaps better known as a stylist, in particular for his work with artists such as Beth Ditto (whom he considers to be a close friend), Ana Matronic from the Scissor Sisters, the Klaxxons and many more famous faces. At the moment, the self-confessed grafter (Johnny wakes up at 7am every morning and hits the sack at 2am) has made a move to the world of design through his label House of Blue Eyes. “The House of Blue Eyes is essentially a movement”, says Johnny passionately. “It’s very inspired by Warhol and the energy of The Factory of New York in the late sixties, early seventies with me as the sort of Warhol-esque character with all these designers and artists and performers and models who are part of that house. The fashion collection is a big room in the house but it is essentially bringing together fashion, art and music…. The House of Blue Eyes is a house of love, and hope and change.” It was the House of […]

An interview with designer Romina Karamanea

Romina Karamanea may not be a name you recognise instantly, but the former right hand woman for Robert Cary Williams has been gaining recognition among the fashion cognoscenti ever since she branched out on her own with her instantly covetable collections. Specialising in experimental design, playing with structure and texture, her approach has appealed to fans including the late Isabella Blow and Italian Vogue’s Franca Sozanni. Karamanea has been sponsored to appear at London Fashion Week’s On/Off and the White shoe in Milan and now, after featuring in the 100 New Designers book by Lawrence King, it is only a matter of time before the London-based, Athens-born designer becomes the hottest ticket at Fashion Week. Here she talks exclusively to MFL about setting up her own label and the influences behind her unique design approach. Have you always known you wanted to be a designer? I have always wanted to be a fashion designer, for me it combines so many different disciplines like art, culture, music, film, architecture and people. It transcends language and everyone can appreciate it, so it is inclusive and also there is never a dull moment. When did you first start making clothes? I was 18 when I first started and I must say I have learnt a lot since then! I remember when I made my first garment, I had no formal training, I did not know how to cut or stitch, so I ended up using canvas, folding it in half, I then made a model lie on the floor so I could draw around her! I then secured the two pieces of canvas together with PVC tape and embellished it with metallic pieces from consumer packaging, i.e crisp and bottle tops. Very Blue Peter! It was quite a feat but to be honest […]

Rick Ross Shows Big Boys Can Fashionably Hang

I’m not a fan of Rick Ross. As a matter of fact, I’ve never had a single Rick Ross tune on heavy rotation so I post this “Magnificent” video not to venerate his musical talents, but to give him due props on what seems to be his renewed sense of style (fingers crossed). No pun intended, but Rick Ross literally looked suavein a polished two?button white suit topped off with a touch of black piping. The matching polka dot ascot and pocket square was equally pleasing and left me wondering who styled his counterpart, R&B crooner, John Legend? Honestly, what was up with that third leg of a tie?! Take heed people, ties are not to hang past your belt so please don’t try this at home. On a final note, it’s important to recognize that as hefty as Rick Ross is, he still managed to hold his own against the more shapely John Legend. Moreover, there is the odd chance that Ross actually upstaged the singer’s wardrobe thus Ross’ styling debunks the notion that burly lads can’t look the part. So to close, I’ll say this: if shedding pounds is not in your foreseeable future, then investing in a tailor is the next best way to looking, acting and feeling magnificent!

Funmi has also contributed to fashion bibles Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Stella Magazine and Russian Vogue as well as major newspapers such as The Guardian, Sunday Times Style and The Daily Telegraph. Despite her hectic schedule we managed to catch up with Funmi to discuss fashion, movies, music and of course we had to talk a little vintage… What does a normal working day for you consist of? It varies. I tend to check my emails first thing and then make a list of a million and one things to do. On Mondays I tend to get my team together to discuss the fashion stories going forward. This sets the tone for the rest of the week where I tend to write, organise interviews and features with designers, meet with the buyers to discuss what is on the hot list this week, go down to the Browns stores to see which new designers have come in, meeting with stylists to discuss shoots, meetings with prs, working on our blog and redesign … As I said it really varies. No two days are ever the same.

London Fashion Week: Ann-Sofie Back AW09

This show followed straight on from Peter Jensen, so if I was gushing a little too much in my Jensen review it was because this was in contrast horrific. The theme for this collection is: “Ann-Sofie Back burns in hell. Now I’m not being funny, but if you choose this as a theme, you need to make sure your collection is so good that it doesn’t actually create catwalk hell. Back clearly didn’t understand this and instead gave us a horrific show or should I say horror show?! To music from all our favourite horror movies, zombie models strolled, and in one case, tripped their way down the catwalk. Whitened faces, with big black eyes and contact lenses that made them look possessed was the ‘beauty’ trend. The show was based on horror movies, and Poltergeist was clearly a major theme as the majority of models were made to look like walking dream catchers. Carrie was also an influence, seen best by the corpse style prom queen complete with tiara. Everything was ripped and ‘distressed’, jeans, jumpers, t-shirts, dresses and skirts. The best items were an egg shaped coat with unusual fastenings, a sweatshirt saying ‘Boo!’ and a graphic jumper dress. It was however, an appalling collection. I like to think I push boundaries with fashion, I like to wear the unwearable in an act of defiance to those who class them as such. But this truly was completely and utterly unwearable. Even the more simple designs, I just thought “why bother? you can pick up similar styles by rock brands on the high street. Sorry Ann-Sofie Back but you really did crash and burn.

Daisy makes commuting fashionable

Unlike the other fashion capitals of the world, London doesn’t really notice when Fashion Week is in town. I will mention to friends that I’m off to the shows or the Natural History Museum and they will respond with “oh is there something on? This is very distressing for people like myself where fashion is not about what clothes you put on, but is a way of life. So anything that brings Fashion Week out into the general psyche gets top marks from me. Because this year celebrates the British Fashion Council’s 25th birthday, lots of lovely events can be expected in celebration. One of these is a range of illustrations by fashion darling Daisy de Villeneuve, which will not hang in a gallery but will instead adorn our Oyster card holders and chests. In collaboration with Transport for London, Daisy has created some quirky illustrations that will be sold on their new online shop. Daisy’s drawings are based on passers by from her time spent on our infamous transport system. Her images have a childlike cool factor and you can see why she is loved by the fashion industry. Having worked her felt tip magic for brands including Colette, Topshop, Shanghai Tang and V&A and magazine work for Lula, Vogue and Sunday Times Style. She has also managed to fit in time to exhibit and publish two books. On the TFL-British Fashion Council collaboration Daisy says: “I was born in London & have always loved it. I find it such an inspiring town, full of creative & interesting people. There is a special energy here, from fashion and music to clubs and magazines that is truly unique to London, no doubt the reason I can never stay away too long! So yes people, Fashion Week is approaching and if […]

Halston goes digital at Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week kicks off tomorrow and it has been hitting the headlines almost daily for the past few weeks. First designers were pulling out, then they were opting for catwalk shows without catwalks, then Barbie and condoms appeared, and of course New York Fashion Week’s new home was announced. Yes, it is one busy fashion week, and now there’s more news, this time thanks to Halston. We thought Temperley and Betsey Johnson were pairing things back, but it’s nothing compared to the relaunched brand Halston. They’re not having a catwalk, a party, a private view; they’re not even going to have goodie bags! Instead the brand have created a digital music video that is going to be… wait for it… emailed to a select list of fashion types tomorrow. The video will feature Dree Hemingway acting out a modern Halston lover as she flaunts around NYC of course wearing the Autumn/Winter 09 collection, the image above is a snapshot from the film. Talking about this more unusual step, board member Tamara Mellon explained: “Everything is so fast now, and everyone sees the shows on Style.com. By the time it’s in stores, they have seen the next season. We thought this is another way forward. Particularly now, with the economic climate, a lot of people’s budgets will be cut and many won’t be traveling to see the shows, and this is a way to be inclusive. Although the president from Halston, Bonnie Takhar, was quick to add that it had been planned since September and was not because of the credit crunch. Yeah sure, we believe you. The video has been made by trendy production companies Blink Productions and Colonel Blimp, think Lily Allen and Jarvis Cocker. So it should look very ‘on-trend’. But I have been wondering, if […]

The Grammy Awards 2009: The Good, the bad and the ugly!

The Grammy Awards is the one ceremony when stars can let their hair down and don some more interesting creations. It’s also the time when we get to see music stars trying their very best to look as stylish as Oscar nominees. Yes, it’s a mixed bag every year and this year was no exception. The Good Audrina Patridge , Looking like a young Audrey Hepburn, this column of teal from Tadesh looks stunning. The patent belt and clutch are right on trend and that side bun looks nonchalant chic. The neckline is incredibly flattering. An all round winner. Katy Perry , Hold the front page, Katy Perry actually got a red carpet look right, but she’s got a long way to go to make up for that horrendous performance. As for the Basil Soda gown, it is a gorgeous springtime pink, fits like a glove and the oversized corsage detail adds a creative edge. Carrie Underwood , Another surprise style winner. Shimmering delightfully in Zuhair Murad, Carrie shows off her wonderful figure and quite rightly plays down the accessories. Gwyneth Paltrow , She has become the queen of showstopping outfits. Working her incredible legs, she does look phenonmenal. Gwyneth quite literally shines in Versace. The Bad Miley Cyrus , Herve Leger by Max Azria is the brand of choice at the moment. But the young, gorgeous ones usually choose a nice little body con. And whilst I appreciate that Miley is enough trouble without getting her boobs out, she should have opted to dress her age. Solange Knowles , Talking of acting your age, whilst Miley needs to look more youthful, Solange needs to age up. This outfit is something you might have worn to your school disco aged 14. Not the Grammy Awards aged 22. Sheryl Crowe , […]

The Gospel according to D&G

Dolce and Gabbana are fashion geniuses, they are perhaps even style gods, but priests? Looks like there’s nothing the design duo can’t do. But if you’re wondering where this stylish congregation will be, or the fact that you didn’t know the Catholic church was into appointing fashion designers, then never fear, it’s all for a film. As with most things fact is often stranger than fiction. So they are not priests, but they are playing cameo roles as priests in a musical film. Honestly, it’s the truth….told you it was strange. In a new film called Nine, directed by Rob Marshall, Stefano and Domenico were caught on camera in Rome last week in all their holy inspired glory. The film, based on a Broadway musical is due for release in November. But D&G aren’t the only exciting stars in the film. Oh no, they join one of the best casts we’ve seen in a long time. Starring alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and Sophia Loren. Now that’s a line up. Who’d have thought of a pair of designers sharing the screen with such stars, rather than dressing them?! [Source]

The Fashion Week countdown: Pam Hogg

Whilst New York Fashion Week has been causing a stir with all its’ changing venue, lack of catwalks and love of Barbie antics. It is easy to forget how wonderful the month of Fashion Week truly is. And so we must start to turn our attention to the second fashion week: London. We have a few new additions to the schedule whilst others have chosen to have installations rather than catwalks. But one designer who has got chins wagging is the return of the punk-rock designer Pam Hogg. Appearing off schedule on the forth day of fashion week, in the very fitting Science Museum, Pam Hogg is set to make her return. On/Off’s creative director, Lee Lapthorne commented: “We’re delighted to support Pam and salute her return to fashion week; the whole team is right behind her. Hogg’s clothes are a frenzied bold mix of metallic’s and skin tight styles. She is not what you would call classic, subdued or elegant. But oh what fun. Having worked in the fields of music, film and art as well as fashion, she is a true creative. She was in bands Rubbish and Doll and is an entirely self taught fashion designer. Recently hip boutique Browns asked Hogg to create an instore installation, the result was an incredible blend of leather and taxidermy. Not only this, but Hogg’s recent work will be seen in the highly anticipated first issue of Love magazine. The buzz surrounding Hogg is immense, and will certainly give Gareth Pugh something to think about. We may be in a financial mess, but I’m starting to think this may be one of the best fashion weeks yet. With the return of rebellious designers, well behaved designers being rebellious and creatively inspired shows, it looks good for the future of design. […]

Police, paramedics & booze: It’s Kate Moss’ birthday!

The ultimate party girl turned 35 on Friday and what does any self-respecting supermodel do to celebrate? Well, have a four-day party of course! After a nine hour drinking session with boyfriend, Jamie Hince and her mother at China Tang restaurant at The Dorchester Hotel, Mayfair. Where they dined on dim sum and Cristal champagne, it was time to prepare for the main event. A medieval themed party was planned at Kate’s £8 million home, it was here the first drama took place when a worker fell ill and was taken to hospital by paramedics. But the show must go on and medieval furniture, deer and moose’s heads were just part of the decor. A pig on a spit took centre stage, not sure what vegetarian guest Stella McCartney made of it. Other guests included Sadie Frost, Davinia Taylor and Rhys Ifans. Guests danced the night away to 80s hits, well until the police turned up asking for the music to be turned down. But the party did not stop, even when a second outing from the police took place. The festivities continued until 7am, much to Kate’s neighbour’s disapproval. Kate certainly shows no signs of slowing, and we wouldn’t want it any other way! [
