Paris Fashion Week SS15 highlights from Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, and Celine

George Clooney’s wedding wasn’t the only exciting thing that happened at the weekend. Paris Fashion Week continued to give us brand spanking new spring/summer 2015 collections from some of the biggest fashion designers in the world, and as usual, we saw some ground-breaking and memorable stuff. The Jean Paul Gaultier spring/summer 2015 show was an emotional one, as the designer showcased his last ever ready-to-wear collection. (He’ll be focusing all his attention on Couture from now on- click here for more deets.) So, it was only right that he went out with a bang, and that’s exactly what he did. JPG paid homage to all the industry figures who have shaped his impressive career; Grace Coddington, Franca Sozzani, Suzy Menkes, Carine Roitfeld, Emmanuelle Alt all ‘featured’ on the runway, making the show a truly unforgettable one just the way JPG intended. Elsewhere in Paris, Riccardo Tisci presented a great, mostly monochromatic collection for Givenchy (with the Kim Kardashian and little North West obviously sitting pretty on the front row to support an eyebrow-less Kendall Jenner), while Phoebe Philo was clearly inspired by the one and only Kate Bush (who is currently touring right here in Britain) for her latest Celine collection. Check out all of our highlights below: Jean Paul Gaultier Givenchy Celine

Jean Paul Gaultier is stopping his ready-to-wear!

We’re a little bit gutted to announce that Jean Paul Gaultier is putting an end to his ready-to-wear line. That means no collection, no catwalk show at Paris Fashion Week, no relatively affordable garments. Someone pass us an entire box of tissues… According to WWD, the designer has made this drastic and heart-breaking choice due to commercial constraints and the pace in which collections need to be churned out every season. JPG will, however, continue to work hard on the Haute Couture collections, and will of course be keeping his fragrance and accessories ranges. Phew! “For some time, I have found true fulfilment in working on the haute couture and it allows me to express my creativity and my taste for research and experimentation,” the designer said. “At the same time the world of ready-to-wear has evolved considerably. Commercial constraints, as well as the frenetic pace of collections don’t leave any freedom, nor the necessary time to find fresh ideas and to innovate. “This is a new beginning, I will be able to express again my creativity fully and without constraints.” We’re looking forward to seeing these fresh ideas for ourselves! The last ever ready-to-wear show will be on Saturday September 27th during Paris Fashion Week. We predict it’s going to be emotional! [Vogue]

Kim Kardashian named GQ Woman of the Year!

Kim Kardashian was all we could talk about at the GQ Men of the Year Awards. Not only did she get our (and all menfolk’s) attention because of her racy, see-through outfit (It was a couture Ralph & Russo skirt worn over an Atsuko Kudo latex bodysuit – and apparently ripped at the derriere during the ceremony itself! Oops!) but she also picked up the coveted GQ Woman of the Year gong. Way to go, Kim! “She is simply one of the most famous women in the world,” said GQ editor Dylan Jones as he introduced her. “The queen of social media and the queen of TV. And since marrying Kanye West in May she has become part of the world’s most famous couple. She’s Coca Cola famous… it’s Kim Kardashian.” Coca Cola famous, indeed! Do you agree with the GQ editor or do you think the award should have gone to someone else?

10 must-haves under £150

Sitting outside, strawberries in one hand and iced green tea in the other, while the sunshine beams down all around me, you can’t miss the gorgeous weather: Summer is definitely here. The (very unfamiliar yet very welcome) British sunshine has been out in full force. With these must have pieces you can make sure you don’t spend all your hard earned cash straight away, but still treat yourself and make sure you keep your style as cool as ever. 1. Gold-Plated Necklace by Kenneth Jay Lane – £75 This gorgeous necklace can be a statement accessory to accompany a casual daytime outfit, compliment a richly coloured evening outfit or alternatively complete your look with your favourite LBD and some gold earrings (see up and coming brand Kevia’s beautiful range for some inspiration – even better, their range is all environmentally sustainable, using 100% recycled materials but still producing incredible results). This piece is perfect for the natural and exotic themes springing up in summer collections (exhibited by no.10 of our list). 2. Leslie Snake Wedge Sandals by Tory Burch – £146 Previously priced £325 (thank God for season sales) these wedge sandals are decorated with a gorgeous snake print and an almond coloured wedge, perfect for staying glamorous on the beach while sipping a skinny Mojito and soaking up the summer sun. I personally think snake print creates the perfect balance out of all of the animal prints. It’s subtle and sophisticated, yet you can still easily make a statement out of it. Snake prints always creates the perfect clutch, Tory works her magic there too in her Clara Wristlet Clutch Bag from one of her past collections.) 3. Baron Von Fancy Tote by Juicy Couture- £88 Witty and practical, not only does this tote bag make the perfect bag […]

Cheryl Fernandez Versini has a brand new Madame Tussauds waxwork – complete with a big shiny engagement ring!

A new name, a new marital status, a new rock on her finger, and now a brand new waxwork… we definitely see a theme here! Cheryl Fernandez Versini (formerly Cheryl Cole, duh!) has got herself a shiny new waxwork at Madame Tussauds, and we think it might just be her most realistic one yet! “It’s time to refresh her look especially now she’s about to burst back onto our TV screens with imminent return of the X Factor,” said Madame Tussauds marketing manager Matthew Clarkson. The timing is pretty perfect, although we do think Cheryl has thrown a spanner in the works by choosing to lighten her locks even further these past few weeks, thus making the waxwork already look a tad out of date. Still, beady eyed readers and Madame T’s visitors will notice that the newlywed has her big shiny engagement ring on her finger, which still makes the waxwork nice and relevant. Talk about attention to detail! What do you think of Chez’s new waxwork? Is this one your favourite? [Image]

Andrej Pejic undergoes gender reassignment surgery

Androgynous model Andrej Pejic has officially undergone gender reassignment surgery, and will from now on be known as Andreja Prejic. Although Andrej Pejic had quite a successful and lucrative career as an androgynous model prior to the surgery – having fronted numerous ad campaigns and walking in Jean Paul Gaultier’s couture show – the model has insisted that the surgery has made her more comfortable than ever… “My biggest dream was to be a girl,” the model said after her surgery which took place a few months ago. “I was proud of my gender non-conforming career, but my biggest dream was to be comfortable in my own body. I was happy the moment had come – as happy as you can be before a surgery. It was about three months before I felt like myself again.” We can’t wait to see what Andreja’s next project as a fully-fledged female model is; any guesses? We’re already expecting to see her make her acting debut in Sofia Coppola’s version of The Little Mermaid, where she’ll be playing the part of sister #4. Exciting times! [Telegraph] [Image]

Cara Delevingne poses in a boxing ring for Chanel autumn/winter 2014 ad campaign

Despite being noticeably absent from the Chanel Couture show in Paris last week, Cara Delevingne is the main star of the French fashion House’s autumn/winter 2014 ad campaign. And the tomboy at heart model couldn’t look more chic, elegant and ladylike if she tried. The pic above might just be out favourite Cara Delevingne ad campaign pic of the season so far; it’s going to take a lot to top it! Although the autumn/winter 2014 runway show took place in a “supermarket”, it doesn’t look like Karl Lagerfeld and the Chanel team have continued with that theme, as they have favoured the setting of a boxing ring instead. Interesting… but the Chanel clothes and Cara D certainly make it work! We don’t think we’re going to take up boxing any time soon though, as we don’t think classic pearl-embellished Chanel sweaters are part of the recommended sporting attire. If that changes in the near future, we might have to reconsider…

Why the watch will always be a timeless accessory!

Men and women have, for centuries used timepieces as both a practical and stylish accessory. While many smart phones now offer the functionality of keeping time for any and every location around the world, there’s something decidedly more distinguished about the intricate mechanics of a well-made watch. Ranging in price from tens of thousands to a few quid, watches can suit all tastes and budgets and compliment any ensemble. For those who doubt the merits of wristwatches, here are just a few of the very good reasons that this particular fashion accessory will always remain timely. Demand Respect The old adage ‘to dress for success’ is no myth. For years people have been dressing for the job they want and the crowd they aim to impress. A watch is a visual indicator of both style and substance; a sartorial cue to friends and strangers alike that the owner of a wristwatch is someone serious and stylish. For men, a smart haircut, a shoeshine and a well-tailored suit are perfectly complimented by the finishing touch of a handsome wristwatch that demands attention and respect. For women, a watch can take on any number of fashionable functions. A dazzling variety of bands and faces can combine to compliment every outfit from the chicest of bohemian to the classiest of couture. Make Time for a Unique Style Watches can suit any type of style. For a classic look, consider investing in a traditional timepiece or for a modern aesthetic, perhaps consider more experimental methods of time-telling. For decades designers have been re-inventing the traditional functionality of a watch with contemporary styles of the times. For some investing in a timeless timepiece is the perfect declaration of personal style; something strong, consistent and stylish that transcends fads. For others, a watch may be a […]

Phones4U founder buys minority stake in Ralph & Russo

Worn by the likes of Angelina Jolie, Beyonce and the Duchess of Cambridge, Ralph & Russo has never been hotter! So, if you have a few million burning a hole in your pocket, why don’t you buy a stake in it? That’s exactly what Phones4U founder John Caudwell did! The British-born tycoon will lend both financial and business support to the label, although Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo will reportedly still have full control. “We really weren’t looking for investment at all. We’d been approached before and it wasn’t something we were courting, but this deal felt really right for us,” Michael Russo said. “John has great business experience and his investment will allow us to execute our expansion and growth strategy more quickly than we had planned. It’s a hugely exciting time.” We can’t wait to see what John Caudwell’s addition to the Ralph & Russo team will bring – watch this space! [Vogue] [Image]

Blake Lively, Chanel and a Cannes Film Festival red carpet = perfection!

Yep, we’re writing about Blake Lively at the Cannes Film Festival for the second day in a row. We don’t think anyone will blame us though, as we just fell off our office swivel chairs when we first clapped eyes on her latest look. Although Blake Lively is the face of Gucci Premiere and has looked sensational in its dresses this month, she decided to go for a different designer for her latest Cannes appearance. And the only designer to substitute Gucci for has to be Chanel, right? Blake Lively literally sparkled on the Mr Turner premiere red carpet in a bedazzling Chanel Couture dress that is pretty much what all sartorial dreams are made of. She teamed it with Sophia Webster heels, an abundance of exquisite Lorraine Schwartz jewellery, and her signature effortless beach waves (which we learnt are a lot lower maintenance than we thought). And how much do you love the pocket detailing on that dress? We need a moment to process how one woman can look so perfect; please excuse us…

The Met Gala 2014: The best dressed!

All the big names in fashion, film, and music gathered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City last night, for the highly anticipated Met Gala! This year, the museum was honouring Charles James, and the dress-code was a very simple (albeit slightly “boring” according to Marc Jacobs) “white tie and decorations”. Anyone familiar with the work of Charles James would know that elegant eveningwear was his thing, so they wouldn’t have gone wrong by donning the finest couture pieces with some elegant jewels. There were many ladies who absolutely nailed their looks, while some probably should have stayed home. Stella McCartney had a big moment on the red carpet, dressing the likes of Rihanna and Reese Witherspoon so flawlesslessly for the event, in two very different but equally stunning dresses. Rihanna went for her signature sexy look, while Reese was a vintage glamour goddess. Selena Gomez also wowed on the red carpet for us, looking very mature for just 21 years old in a bold deep purple Diane von Furstenberg dress. We also love how Gossip Girl stars Blake Lively and Leighton Meester were reunited at the Met Gala – they both looked amazing in  their respective Gucci Premiere and Emilio Pucci dresses. Not all of the ladies went for full-length or ballgown dresses (like Hayden Panettiere who looked like a Princess!) though – Solange Knowles and Lena Dunham were just two of the stars who went for something a little bit shorter. The impact definitely wasn’t lost though. Here are our best dressed celebs from last night’s Met Gala. Let us know who gets your vote in the comments below. MTV Movie Awards 2014: The best dressed!

Music and movie stars alike gathered in the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles last night, ready to take in the 2014 MTV Movie Awards action! The red carpet was a real mixed bag in terms of choice of outfits, as it was filled with both fun and fashionable pieces making for real versatility. Rihanna went sexy in a white Ulyana Sergeenko Couture number with a dangerously thigh high split (and she wasn’t afraid to show the crowd, either!) as did Rita Ora, who went the other way and wore a black Barbara Casasola dress with a provocative, plunging front. Going cute but high fashion were Lupita Nyong’o and Victoria Justice, who looked gorgeous in their respective Chanel and Atelier Versace dresses, while Nicki Minaj kept things surprisingly minimal and effortless in a black Alexander McQueen dress. Here’s who made our best-dressed list – don’t forget to let us know who your favourite is in the comments below! Rihanna in Ulyana Sergeenko Couture Jessica Alba in Kenzo and Piece D’anarchive Iggy Azalea in John Galliano Lupita Nyong’o in Chanel Rita Ora in Barbara Casasola Victoria Justice in Atelier Versace Ellie Goulding in Giorgio Armani Nicki Minaj in Alexander McQueen Shailene Woodley in Balmain Holland Roden in Salvatore Ferragamo Zendaya Coleman In Emanuel Ungaro Bella Thorne in Versace Debby Ryan in Rachel Zoe

White Tie and Decorations dress code for Met Gala 2014

Last year it was all about punk which led to some great (and not-so-great) sartorial choices, but this year’s Met Gala has a very different dress code. It’s just been revealed that the designer being honoured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is American couturier Charles James, and as a result, the dress code that all the lucky attendees will be adhering to this year is “white tie and decorations”. Quite an ambiguous dress code if ever there was one. Charles James was all about rich colours and glamorous eveningwear, so we are expecting the finest and highest standards of Haute Couture dresses for the red carpet. We reckon the more extravagant dressers like Lady Gaga and Anna Dello Russo will be all over the decorations like a rash, but the dress code’s ambiguity does leave a lot of room for confusion and maybe even error. It’s a good, safe dress code for the boys though, which is also great news for us as it means we get to stare at dapper looking men in sharp suits and white ties all night. We’ll be back with more details as and when we get them. [Refinery 29]

Panic over – Lily Allen has found her Chanel wedding dress!

Call off the search – Lily Allen’s wedding dress has been found! The blogosphere has been in a frenzy over the past 24 hours as it came to everyone’s attention that Lily Allen’s custom made Chanel Haute Couture wedding dress which she wore to her reception had gone missing. The singer admitted that it had disappeared in an interview with Miquita Oliver on 4Music’s Rock the Look after being asked what the most expensive item in her wardrobe was… “There’s two bits to that answer. One is that it’s not in my wardrobe, it’s gone missing,” Lily admitted.  “And two, it’s my Chanel Couture wedding dress that’s worth about £200,000. It’s gone. I don’t know where it is.” We broke out in a bit of a sweat when we heard that such a fine piece of Karl Lagerfeld craftsmanship was lost, but Lily took to Twitter last night to assure her fans and fashionistas alike that it had been found. “OK, EVERYONE RELAX, I FOUND IT !!!!!!!!! A couple of weeks ago now,” she tweeted. Phew! We can sleep easy! [Image]

When the Old Meets the New: Fashion and Style in the UAE

Whether it’s somewhere to splash out, to eat or simply to stay a few nights, the shopping malls, restaurants and hotels in Dubai showcase the very finest in luxury, so it’s no surprise that the trendsetting emirates are fast becoming a major player in the fashion world. Millions of international visitors attend Dubai’s annual shopping festival, and the festival also attracts some of the world’s top designers. Despite international influence, though, the UAE has retained fashion flavours all of its own. Here’s how the traditional and the cutting edge have led to the emirates’ own style. Elegant As Always The traditional women’s clothing of the UAE is a combination of abaya and hijab, a long robe and headscarf. Contemporary fashion in the UAE has generated decorative and fitted versions that retain the style of the abaya, which is originally black and shapeless, but grace it with couture design and further elegance. Many of the world’s top designers have their own ranges of abayas, including Calvin Klein, Dior, Versace and Giorgio Armani. Although still predominantly black, exquisite beadwork and embroidery is incorporated into the garments as well as luxury fabrics. A New Era in Style The UAE has become extremely popular with expats because of the high salaries they can earn, not to mention the chance to live in the lap of luxury under a blazing sun. This influx of Westerners has triggered a new era in style, with the abaya evolving into a long, flowing dress. Colourful versions of these have been displayed on the catwalks of fashion shows across the UAE. Many expat women in the UAE have also adopted these modern abayas for comfort and elegance in the hot climate. Opulent Accessories The UAE’s souks have long been the places to buy exquisite gold jewellery, and they still […]

Indian Fashion Designers Introduce London Business School to Creativity

London Business School has employed the services of two highly acclaimed fashion designers to help students understand Indian fashion better. Students will be taught how to harness the Indian fashion industry that has long been something of a sleeping giant, but has made in-roads to becoming a global superpower. Narendra Kumar and Azeem Khan, will be helping London Business School understand the business side of the Indian fashion industry and help them anticipate how the market will continue to evolve. Second year students involved in a college trip to Mumbai met with the critically acclaimed designers, and Superna Motwane of Apricot Publications. The trip to the capital of Maharashtra is chance for the students to really get an understanding of the Indian business landscape and how enterprises and individuals are adapting to the changing landscapes. Narendra Kumar has been referred to as the King of Menswear by the Huffington Post. Kumar first came to the attention of the fashion world during the 2011 Lakme Fashion Week with his Autumn/Winter range. His use of lustrous sapphire, ruby and midnights blues gave his range instant personality and widespread appeal. Azeem Khan has however built up a reputation for more outlandish styles and a master of haute couture fashion. The three Indian ambassadors gave their predictions for the future of Indian fashion and upcoming trends. From the classic style of the Maharajas to the Bollywood look of today – the rich tapestry of Indian fashion and style is being explored in greater depth than ever. Fashions items such as Bandh Gala, Jubbas and Jodhpurs are gracing red carpets around the World more commonly than ever. Spotlight on…Lie Sang Bong

WHO: Dubbed the “Korean McQueen,” Lie Sang Bong is one of the most highly regarded fashion houses to hail from Korea. With a twelve-year Parisian tenancy under his belt – having been a firm  fixture on the fashion week schedule there – Mr. Lie decided to mix his flair for beautiful clothes with commercial sense for autumn/winter 2014, with a debut show in New York. WHY: The Seoulite, revered for his dedication to couture-like techniques and breathtaking gowns has taken a plunge on the more wearable side of fall, sending out practically dressed girls on the runway. Playing on the theme of extreme contrasts for next season, Mr. Lie sought inspiration from powerful images of nature’s fury, such as volcanic eruptions, lava spilling into the sea and Yellowstone National Park’s Grand Prismatic Spring. With a winter-proof mindset, Mr. Lie lined the runway in an array of striking molten rock reds and oceanic blues, taking everything from the cosiest of cover ups to exquisite layering of fur, lace and leather in his stride. Standout pieces included a modified houndstooth coat with oversize lapels; a blue lamsbwool coat realised in a deliciously textured ‘tech fabric’ quickly acquired must-have status, and even the designer’s signature gowns made a surprise appearance. On his decision to show in New York for the first time, Mr. Lie said: “My goal is always to design in a way that pays respect to tradition while providing something that is relevant for the present, marrying art and commerce, craftsmanship and innovation. The confident, intelligent women of New York have an innate understanding and appreciation for this balance.” OUR FAVOURITE AUTUMN/WINTER 2014 LOOK: We couldn’t really betray our weak spot for gorgeous dresses with a hit of practicality, so topping our favourite look list is the striking kick-flare dress in […]

Travel Essentials For a Fashionista

There are plenty of travel destinations suited to those who have an urge to indulge their passion for fashion. New York, Paris and Milan are among the best known but there are scores of others, too. Fun Travel Buddy Travelling with others can make a fashion-focussed expedition all the more enjoyable so book your flights to New York together with your friends to avail affordable but certainly exciting group packages. Likewise, if you choose to make a trip to Europe in search the latest runway trends and haute couture, then go along with someone else who has the same mindset. That way, you’ll have someone to bounce ideas off and to give you a really truthful perspective if you try something on. The first travel essential for any fashionista, therefore, has to be their travel buddy. Quality Luggage Another item that no self-respecting fashion-addicted traveller should leave home without is good quality luggage. Hard suitcases are ideal for the fashion conscious because they allow you to carry your clothes in a way that minimises creases and means they won’t get crushed in an aircraft hold. Remember to keep some spare capacity in your cases so that you have room to bring back a few items with you at the end of the trip. Travel iron The third item on the list is a travel iron. Most hotels will have an ironing service that you can use but a travel iron is helpful for last minute situations when you need to get dressed in a hurry and have some unsightly lines in your clothes to remove. Hair dryer Remember to take your hair dryer with you, too. Hair dryers will help you to keep you styled look on track and make sure that when you are dressed to impress that your […]

WATCH: The 86th Academy Awards (Oscars 2014): The best dressed!

The wait is finally over – the biggest red carpet day in Hollywood has officially arrived, and if you’ve been following us on Twitter, you’ll probably already know that we’ve been pretty excited about it! Popcorn, coffee, tablets (the technological kind), laptops and phones were on standby throughout the night to make sure we didn’t miss a single second of the 86th Academy Awards! We were waiting for 12 Years a Slave actress Lupita Nyong’o’s arrival with baited breath, and think she definitely saved the best dress for last. She stepped onto the red carpet in a custom-made Prada dress that came in a stunning duck egg blue colour, complete with the hottest accessory of the night: a sparkling head band! Cate Blanchett – another one of our red carpet faves – didn’t let us down with her sartorial choice either, looking sensational in a Giorgio Armani dress that she owned from the second she stepped out of her car. Charlize Theron wowed the crowd in a black Dior gown (it pains us to say it, but we think her Dior dress trumped Jennifer Lawrence’s one – we still love you though, J-Law!), as did Kate Hudson and Jessica Biel in their respective and sensational Atelier Versace and Chanel Couture dresses. And it goes without saying, but Angelina Jolie stole the show in her bedazzling Elie Saab Couture dress and more or less put everyone else in the shade when she and Brad Pitt arrived just in the nick of time. Once again, we think the stars outdid themselves on the red carpet this year, meaning we had a bit of a tough time narrowing down our ultimate favourites. Check out our highlights from the Oscars 2014 red carpet, and don’t forget to tell us who gets your best-dressed vote […]

Sibling rivalry: Which Kardashian deserves to land an American Vogue cover?

“To be in Vogue has to mean something,” stated Anna Wintour, and, well, she’s speaking the biblical truth. Campaigning for this prestigious right are two siblings from the world’s most talked about family/klan, depending on how you prefer to address them. Kim Kardashian – the queen of Céline separates and Tom Ford pieces so tight, they create curves ever she didn’t know existed– has kept the fashion set (and herself) guessing whether the coveted prize of cover girl shall be hers (let’s not forget, she’s already been L’uomo-d). From a lobbying partner, whom eventually got his beau to make an unforgettable entrance at the 2013 MET Gala – an event she had previously been banned from by Her Majesty Anna Wintour – to befriending Carine Roitfeld and scoring couture pieces (and front row seats) in Paris, earlier this year; Kim isn’t playing games, she’s ruddy serious. But then again, so is her twee-faced, doe-eyed, long-limbed sibling, Kendall Jenner. The upcoming model has been scoring some fashion hot seats of late. From a nipple-on-show performance at the Marc Jacobs autumn/winter 2014 show to walking for Giles in the Big Smoke, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with Anna Wintour at the Topshop Unique show and posing for a certified selfie with Delevingne and gang backstage; junior Jenner’s sure as hell making her mark in notable fashion circles.  And, all sans sexual controversies, slip-ups and stunts. So, who will be victorious in the race to win Wintour’s (steely) heart, and be the first to grace the glossy covers of the world’s most highly regarded fashion tome? Below, our strongest arguments for putting either sibling on the cover of American Vogue- or both, if Wintour’s feeling generous… Why Kim Kardashian? Luxury-appreciation factor: Kim sure knows the wow factor value of pairing the luxurious, most expensive of wardrobe pieces together […]

From London to Paris and Beyond: A Fashion Week Beauty Trend Report

It may be the dead of winter in most locations north of the Equator, but Fashion Week signals the beginning of spring for industry insiders and for fashion-savvy females everywhere. Held in New York City, Milan, London and Paris, Fashion Week provides top-level fashion houses and up-and-coming designers with the opportunity to show off their best efforts in anticipating the warmer temps to come. All across Europe as well as in the Big Apple, women eagerly mark Fashion Week on their calendars each year. Most of the looks on display on the runways during Fashion Week will never make it past couture shops catering to exclusive clienteles. Nonetheless, affordable interpretations of the most accessible pieces will make their way to certain online specialists that cater to women whose budgets may be limited but who nonetheless wish to maintain a sense of style. Some of the most anticipated trends for 2014 will be familiar to many; the classic look that never goes out of fashion is all the rage. Florals, of Course What is spring without flowers? An explosion of floral patterns will be everywhere, from flowing skirts to chic tops peeking out from beneath tailored blazers. Large, playful floral patterns will be found on dresses meant for garden parties and more casual occasions. More sedate florals will make their way to office-worthy separates. Even daytime weddings will be blessed with colorful blooms on bridesmaids’ dresses and sprinkled amongst frocks worn by guests. Solids that pick up one or more colors found among floral patterns are a cant-miss match for fashion-conscious but somewhat cautious women. Bolder females will mix and match florals and prints or florals and neutrals. To pull off this somewhat-daring look, at least one of the contrasting patterns should be somewhat more subdued to avoid overwhelming onlookers with […]

Spotlight On…..Yvel

WHO: They say there’s nothing like a labour of love, and that’s certainly something jewellery brand Yvel knows about. Crafters of ornate, luxury jewellery; the brand is the brainchild of design duo Orna and Isaac Levy, who also happen to be married. Starting out in 1986 as a high-end line of exquisite pearl jewels, with only $2,000 in investment, Yvel – which is a mirror image spelling of the creators’ surnames – has gone onto become an international company, with a design centre in Jerusalem now employing a 100+ strong team. Surrounded by the beauty and versatility of pearls from a young age, Orna, whose family has been involved in the pearl jewellery business for several generations, naturally gravitated towards creating her own jewellery line. Teaming up with husband Isaac to create exotic designs incorporating various precious stones led to the rapid expansion of the brand, which has secured Yvel notable industry awards, including seven ‘Best In Pearl Design’ awards; the esteemed Town & Country Couture Design Award from 2005-07 and the retailer-voted Centurion Best in Pearl Design Award from 2011-13. WHY: But, this luxury jewellery brand is not all about serving the wealthy and privileged. Yvel is also behind the Megemeria School of Jewellery and Art, an initiative set up in 2010 in the north of Israel that offers vital training and employment to Ethiopian immigrants. Handcrafted, gold-plated brass designs created by Megmeria graduates are also available to purchase on the site, providing a valuable platform for the designers to showcase their work. OUR FAVOURITE PIECE: With the Yvel collections spanning several styles and levels of craftsmanship, it’s difficult to choose a favourite. But, given we’re suckers for stunning accessories, we’re going to go with the breathtaking Avant Garde Baroque & Diamond gold necklace (pictured above) from the Designer’s Private […]

Kate Middleton’s Jenny Packham look at the National Portrait Gallery was an exellent reminder of how wow-worthy the designer’s pieces can be – a thought which was only reiterated when we saw the autumn/winter 2014 collection float down the runway. Although the collection was reportedly inspired by Bianca Jagger, there were sartorial influences dating as far back as the 1930s in the collection; the glittering gold dress was a particular favourite of ours, and one which we predict might appear on an awards season red carpet this year. Vera Wang, who has dressed a number of our fave A-listers including the most recent celeb bride Kaley Cuoco who went against the grain and opted for a pink wedding down, went for romance – but not as we know it. Dark romance was the theme for the designer’s autumn/winter 2014 collection, with lots of black and charcoal coloured pieces making their debut on the Big Apple catwalk. There was also an abundance of tartan – a definite AW14 trend we need to look out for over the next few weeks! Although Blake Lively and Freida Pinto were among the famous faces who sat on the front row wearing some very feminine and floral Michael Kors spring/summer 2014 pieces, the designer’s latest collection had a hint of androgyny about it. Rich, luxe fabrics were juxtaposed with casual cool tailoring, offering us a very covetable autumn/winter collection that we’ll […]

L’Wren Scott cancels London Fashion Week show!

Uh oh – according to reports that has surfaced this morning, it doesn’t look like L’Wren Scott will be showing at London Fashion Week this season. The designer was scheduled to showcase her autumn/winter 2014 collection this Sunday during London Fashion Week, but has been forced to cancel due to “production delays in key show and couture pieces.” L’Wren Scott fans will still be able to see the new collection, as the designer has pledged to unveil it on social media. Press, editors, retailers and special guests will also be able to sneak a peek with their own eyes at her Paris showroom in March, so it’s not all bad! Are you sad to see another designer absent from LFW this season? [WWD]

Harrods and British Airways team up for catwalk shows in the sky

Remember when Karl Lagerfeld transformed the Grand Palais into an Air Chanel plane for the much talked about spring/summer 2012 Haute Couture show? Well it looks like Kaiser Karl was once again ahead of the times, as catwalks shows in the sky are now actually going to be a thing! Harrods has teamed up with British Airways to make this happen, and will be using the A380 route from London to Johannesburg  for the very fashionable journey. “Harrods is delighted to have partnered with British Airways, bringing together two iconic British brands, to create a spectacular event,” said Michael Ward, a spokesperson for Harrods. “Celebrating the exceptional design of the A380, we were able to present the talent and creativity of our most respected British fashion designers, in a unique experience at 30,000ft.” That does sound terribly exciting – especially as the debut flight reportedly featured looks from Victoria Beckham to to Matthew Williamson to Stella McCartney, but don’t flock to your nearest travel agent to book your ticket just yet, as the flights are currently press-only. Still, this might be available to the public in the near future tool so cross your fingers and watch this space! [Vogue] [Image]

Why are Kim Kardashian and Kanye West moving their wedding forward?

Anyone keeping up with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding plans will know that the pair were going to have a July wedding… but that’s all changed! The wedding has reportedly been moved to May, a whole two months earlier than planned, so Kimye can begin the task of baby making even sooner. Although Kim originally wasn’t too fussed about walking down the aisle with a cute little baby bump, she apparently now wants to avoid it at all costs. Her change of heart might have something to do with the fact that her fashion designer fiancé Kanye has picked out not one but two couture wedding dresses for her to wear on their special day. Isn’t it unlucky fir the groom to see the bride’s wedding dress before the ceremony? Anyone want to start the “who will she wear” guessing game? We have money on at least one of the dresses being made by Riccardo Tisci… [US]

Anne Hathaway suits up in Viktor & Rolf

An Oscar-winning actress such as Anne Hathaway is used to diversity and versatility on screen, and it looks like she uses the aforementioned diversity and versatility on the red carpet, too. Sure Anne loves an elegant gown or an ultra-feminine dress, but she isn’t afraid to toughen up either (remember her blonde, punk inspired Valentino look at last year’s Met Gala?) or go for something on the more androgynous side. Although Anne is wearing a tailored Viktor and Rolf suit from the duo’s spring/simmer 2014 collection, there’s nothing manly about it; in fact she looks softs and feminine thanks to her pointy heel, subtle make-up and side swept hair. The detailing on the jacket helps girl-ify the outfit too, making this another red carpet style triumph! Miranda Priestly would be so proud!

Get Alexa Chung’s Carven/flats look

As we learnt last week while watching the latest Chanel Couture show, heels are pretty much a thing of the past as it’s all about flats, baby! Alexa Chung is one lady who didn’t need Karl Lagerfeld to convince her to step out in flats, as she’s been rocking the heel-less trend for years, which is probably why she does it so well. One of her latest looks is a perfect example of this, hence why we are more than happy to admit to stealing her style. It isn’t the cheapest of outfits this week, but both Carven dress and Charlotte Olympia flats can be classed as “investment pieces” that can be worn season after season. Winner! Broderie anglasie kiwi-print dress, £570, Carven available at Matches Kitty flat slippers, £458.53, Charlotte Olympia available at Far Fetch [Image]

First look: Riccardo Tisci for Nike

We told you that Riccardo Tisci would be collaborating with Nike on an exciting project a few weeks ago, and now the cat is officially out the bag. The Givenchy designer has teamed up with the sportswear brand on a four-piece collection of basketball trainers taking the shape of the classic Air Force 1, and we have the very first look in the picture above. And with Chanel making trainers the “it” shoe of the season thanks to its Couture show last week, they’ve never been so desirable… “The shoe is universal yet somehow very personal,” Riccardo Tisci explained. “I travel all over the world, and I see people wearing the Air Force 1, and they wear it in so many different ways. And so I was thinking, what is the essence of the Air Force 1? And how do I take that essence and make my own statement? “For me the Air Force 1 is not about gender, it’s not about a particular city, nor is it about a certain style. The community decides. It’s democratic. It’s love.” Do you think love is good word to describe the trainers? Do you like Riccardo Tisci’s designs? Let us know if you’ll be treating yourself (or someone you love) to a cheeky pair. [Telegraph]

The 56th Grammy Awards 2014: The best dressed!

We were quite happy to sacrifice another night’s beauty sleep for the 56th Grammy Awards which took place in Los Angeles yesterday, as the red carpet was as riveting as ever! We’re eternally grateful for the invention of satellite TV and live streams, otherwise we wouldn’t have got the full “chain mail” effect of Taylor Swift’s stunning Gucci Premiere dress which was the talk of the red carpet and MFL HQ this morning. Another lady who got us talking for all the right reasons was Katy Perry, who gets the award for “most apt dress” thanks to the Valentino Couture music note dress she stepped out in. She gets extra points for lifting a look off the Couture Fashion Week runway so soon after its catwalk debut! Rita Ora decided to go for a short, sweet and sexy look on this occasion, swapping her usual gowns for a dazzling, reflective Lanvin dress. Well, if you have a body like Rita’s you might as well make the most of it and show it off, are we right? Check out the full list of ladies who impressed us on the Grammys red carpet last night; who gets your best-dressed vote? Katy Perry in Valentino Couture Taylor Swift in Gucci Premiere  Rita Ora in Lanvin  Alicia Keys in Armani Prive  Iggy Azalea in Elie Saab  Zendaya Coleman in Emanuel Ungaro  Sarah Hyland in Emilio Pucci  Ciara in Emilio Pucci  Pink in Johanna Johnson Anna Kendrick in Azzaro  Madonna in Ralph Lauren Ariana Grande in Dolce and Gabbana Anna Faris in Fitriani

Due a wardrobe detox? So say the £400 worth of unworn clothes in your wardrobe

After witnessing the sporty spectacular that was the Chanel Couture show, you’re probably budgeting for your next haul of shimmering sneakers, right? Well, just hold fire! Because, according to a recent survey released by luxury resale clothing site Vestiaire Collective, the average British woman has over £1900 worth of clothes, handbags and accessories in her wardrobe. Doesn’t sound like much, does it? Read on. Commissioned by public opinion poll YouGov, the survey of 1000 women also revealed further, rather shocking statistics about our hoarding shopping habits. In 2013, British women left an average of £404 work of clothes unworn, while one in three women admit to forgetting what actually lurks in the depths of their wardrobes. A staggering 80% of women own fashion items they haven’t worn in the past year, while 26% of those surveyed revealed the reason for ditching certain items was because they were wrong size or fit. But, what does this scramble of statistics actually size up to? Is there any way to put our fashion waste into perspective? Assessing the numbers at hand, Vestiaire Collective estimates that this could mean a whopping £10.1 billion worth of fashion lying paid for but unworn in women’s wardrobes. Wake up call, much? Whether fast fashion (we’re looking at you, Zara), the ease of online shopping or increasingly unhealthier lifestyles are to blame for our addiction to impulse buying with regretful after-effects, we don’t know. But, maybe it’s time we took a lesson in recycling from the queen of repeat-outfits, Kate Middleton, and opted for a wardrobe detox, instead. We’re in, are you? [Image]

Lady Gaga rocks vintage Gianni Versace in Paris

Lady Gaga did a pretty good job of acting as a Donatella Versace doppelganger while attending the Atelier Versace Couture show in Paris a few days ago, but we don’t think anyone is going to confuse the two ladies after seeing her in this ensemble. Although Mother Monster is wearing an instantly recognisable vintage Gianni Versace ensemble in Paris, we think the Donatella caparisons will have come to a very dramatic halt thanks to the equally dramatic piece on Gaga’s head. Would anyone like to offer some explanations? Headpiece and sky-high platform boots aside, we think this is a very glamorous, sparkly and attention-grabbing (for all the right reasons) look; the statement red lip juxtaposed with the monochrome outfit is particularly stunning, and we can’t take our eyes off her! We give Lady Gaga an eight out of 10 for this look; how would you rate her?

The Screen Actors Guild Awards 2014: The best dressed!

The stars of Tinsel Town definitely went for glitz and glamour on the Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet in Los Angeles last night! All of our favourite actresses who have been dominating this year’s awards ceremonies so far turned up and pulled out all the stops with their red carpet attire, once again making any chance of selecting an all-round best-dressed a practically impossible task. Blue was a hot hue on the red carpet last night, as Amy Adams, Lupita Nyong’o, the Jennifers (that’s Lawrence and Garner!), Mindy Kaling and E! presenter Kelly Oscbourne all rocked up in varying shades of the colour. From bright to sparkly to bold to understated – it was all there! New Girl’s Hannah Simone looked like a modern day fairytale princess in her white floating Marchesa dress, while newly married Kaley Cuoco wore a gorgeous gown by Vera Wang, the designer also responsible for her pink wedding dress a few weeks ago!  Scroll down to see all the ladies who made it onto our best-dressed list; who gets your vote? Emma Watson vs. Amy Adams vs. Lupita Nyong’o…Who wore red best at the Golden Globes?

It may seem evident by now, but this week shall be spent basking in the glory of the Golden Globes’ red carpet style. Yes, we’ve waxed lyrical about our best dressed, but it only feels natural to carry on! Red was a prominent colour on the , ahem, red carpet at this year’s Golden Globes (was it a frock-off with a carpet, ladies?), and we couldn’t help pitching the leading ladies in red against one another. Partaking in this week’s dress-off is Emma Watson in Dior Couture, Amy Adams in Valentino Couture, and Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren. The trio of Hollywood darlings looked nothing short of breathtaking on the red carpet, and totally put across their individual styles in their choice of designer and dress, but there can only be one winner… Emma bent the rules, and we love her for it! Wearing trousers with her Dior Couture gown, the peep of blue, cross-strap pumps perfectly round off her look. Amy looked divine in a dreamy Valentino Couture gown, officially making us scream “hell yeah!” at the return of the halterneck, while Lupita – the name on everyone’s lips – stole the night in a cape-sleeved  Ralph Lauren gown. Could she be Superwoman in disguise? Judging by the recent buzz surrounding her, it wouldn’t surprise us if she was! Given all three ladies owned the red carpet with their respective looks, we haven’t quite been able to pick up our jaws from the ground after laying eyes on Lupita’s look. While she waits in line to find out about her potential Oscar-win next month, she’s already won in the style stakes. Whose look wins for you?

The Golden Globes 2014: The best dressed!

Golden Globes time! Yep, it was the 71st annual Golden Globe Award ceremony in Beverly Hills yesterday, and the red carpet was once again full of the biggest and best-dressed names in Hollywood. TV and films stars alike came together for one of the biggest nights on the awards season calendar, and to say they pulled out all the sartorial stops would be a bit of an understatement, as we don’t think our list of best-dressed celebs has ever been this big! Lupita Nyong’o definitely stole the show for us with her effortlessly elegant Ralph Lauren caped look (we got flashbacks to Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford cape dress at the Oscars a few years ago) while Olivia Wilde and Camila Alves also made our jaws drop with their glittering gowns courtesy of Gucci Première and Dolce and Gabbana respectively. Unsurprisingly, Sofia Vergara went for the wow factor in a large Zac Posen dress, while Jennifer Lawrence went for a Dior dress, as was expected. Take a look at the full list of our best-dressed ladies below and let us know who took your breath away! Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren Olivia Wilde in Gucci Première Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen Taylor Swift in Carolina Herrera Camila Alves in Dolce and Gabbana Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad Couture Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung Margot Robbie in Gucci Emma Watson in Dior Couture Mila Kunis in Gucci Première Amy Adams in Valentino Couture Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Uma Thurman in Atelier Versace Kerry Washington in Balenciaga Reese Witherspoon in Calvin Klein Emma Roberts in Lanvin Naomi Watts in Tom Ford Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta Allison Williams in Alexander McQueen

Kelly Rowland vs. Kate Bosworth…Who wore Balmain better?

Two ladies. One blingin’ dress. You know the drill. This week’s fash-off comes courtesy of leggy lovely, Kelly Rowland and Hollywood darling Kate Bosworth. Both ladies were spotted in the same Balmain Fall 2013 dress, albeit with very different style results. Although a top, thanks to the oversize fit, Kate was the first one to turn this embellished showstopper into a dress, at the 2013 Met Gala. Unlike the runway look, Kate went with bare legs, a gold belt to cinch the waist and simple black pumps. A small black clutch and strong eyeliner completed the look nicely. But catching up with Kate in the style stakes was X Factor judge Kelly Rowland, who styled the same dress differently for an appearance on season three of the American show, last year. Pairing the top-cum-dress with nothing other than white Tom Ford pumps and her voluminous locks, Kelly rocked a killer pose, as she posted the outfit on Instagram. But, seeing as it’s a fash-off, there can only be one winner, so we’re going to slip the first style crown of 2014 onto Kate’s head! There isn’t much that Kelly can’t 100 per cent rock, but we love Kate’s accessories, and feel the belt does wonders to frame her petite shape. Definitely a striking, and memorable look from 2013! Whose look wins for you? [Images: Kelly; Kate]

“Following a trend does feel quite oppressive” – Erdem Moralioglu

With Couture Fashion Week hitting Paris later this month, the autumn/winter 2014 collections making their runway debut next month and the current spring/summer 2014 a campaigns still doing the rounds, we will totally forgive you if you’re a bit overwhelmed with trends. But don’t worry too much, because Erdem Moralioglu doesn’t think they’re as important as they used to be! “It’s impossible to escape the idea that there are certain movements in a season – the same as there are with architecture and art – though I think the idea of simply following a trend does feel quite oppressive,” he said. “I’ve been obsessed with the way women looked since I was very young and was always either making dresses for my sister’s dolls or drawing them,” he continued. “I thought, ‘Can this obsession of mine become a job? Is it something you do?’ Eventually I discovered it was.” Erdem has dressed everyone from Alexa Chung to First Lady Michelle Obama, and certainly knows a thing or two about making women look and feel good, so we’re all too happy to listen to what he has to say. Not only is the proof in the aesthetic of his designs, but he also has a shiny Red Carpet accolade that he picked up at the 2013 British Fashion Awards at the end of last year. Do you agree with him re trends? It’ll certainly make updating our wardrobes easier and cheaper if we weren’t so influenced by the current trends, right? Let us know your thoughts! [Fashion Times]

Freida Pinto wows in half sari half dress by Anamika Khanna

Want to know how you can flash your midriff and ooze sex appeal in one of the classiest ways possible? Look at the picture of Freida Pinto above to see it done right. The gorgeous actress didn’t let us down when attended the ASMALLWORLD Gala (don’t worry our space bar didn’t break, that is genuinely what it’s called) at the Gstaad Palace Hotel in the Swiss Alps, wearing a stunning black and gold half sari half dress by Anamika Khanna couture for the occasion. The colours of the gown complemented her skin tone wonderfully, with her jet black hair and bold red lipstick really popping out. The waist belt was a perfect addition too as it didn’t distract from the intricacy of the outfit, especially the neck detailing which is our favourite part. The same goes for her expertly braided up-do too. There are no words to describe how in love we are with this look. [Image]

Valentino collaborates with Havaianas!

It’s practically the middle of December, and unless you’re one of the lucky ones living in Oz and basking in the Australian sunshine, we bet that flip flops are the last things on your minds. Or any type of open toed footwear, for that matter. But flip flops are firmly on our minds this cold December morning, as it’s just been announced that the one and only Valentino has added his chic and couture-like touch to a limited edition collection of Havaianas flip flops. The Brazilian brand has been going strong for 51 years, and has collaborated with the likes of Missoni, Matthew Williamson and Sass & Bide in the past, but it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down; especially now that Valentino Garavani is on board. The collection may not come as a complete shock to you eagle-eyed men’s fashion week viewers, as you may remember that Valentino’s models strutted down the spring/summer 2014 catwalk in some very cool pairs of Havaianas. Way to whet our appetites, team Valentino! The flip flops go on sale from January, with prices starting from £175 for women and £350 for men. [Telegraph]

Philip Treacy designs next year’s Brit Award!

It was just announced that Katy Perry is a confirmed performer at next year’s Brit Awards (for the first time ever!), but now we have another reason to get excited about one of the most important music events of the year. Philip Treacy,  milliner extraordinaire, is designing next year’s Brit Award, an honour which has also been given to the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Damien Hirst and Sir Peter Blake. “Music has always been my inspiration and I’m fortunate to have worked with some of the music industry’s greatest artists,” Philip Treacy said. “My inspiration for the trophy comes from a uniquely British genre of music, punk.” Punk, eh? Does anyone else think he was inspired by the punk theme at this year’s Met Gala? What do you think of the first look of the award, above? Can you imagine your favourite music star waving it around during their acceptance speech onn Wednesday February 19th? [Grazia]

Solange Knowles, we love your style!

It goes without saying that Beyonce’s little sis is one heck of a style maven. Trend setter, think-outside-the-sartorial-box(er) – whatever you want to call her, we are obsessed with her and her unrivalled sense of style. She is a designer’s dream, and here are a few reasons why: 1. We bet this is exactly how Diane Von Furstenberg imagined this jumpsuit being worn when she was designing it. We wouldn’t change a thing about this look – the prints and colours complement Solange perfectly. If we didn’t know any better we would say it was made just for her! 2. Colour but without overdoing it – that’s exactly what this Sportmax yellow dress was all about. The white shoes and sugary-pink lips added even more colour to the ensemble – a winner all round! 3. Solange Knowles and bright colours and bold patterns go hand in hand, but that doesn’t mean she can’t do understated too. This 3.1 Phillip Lim ensemble is Solange’s way of toning down, and we think she is perfection personified. We love the hair too! 4. Solange Knowles has a killer pair of legs, and she isn’t afraid to show them off! The Etro spring/summer 2014 blouse was the main attraction of this look, which Solange helped emphasise even more thanks to her matching bright lippie. The hair is divine, too! 5. Want to do sexy the quirky way? Look to Solange’s Grammy outfit for inspiration. The green Ralph & Russo Couture dress fit her like a glove (we adore the pink shoes she accessorised with too) and her ultra-voluminous “look at me” hair commanded the perfect amount of attention. Who else but Solange?

Karl Lagerfeld’s Coco Chanel film to coincide with Dallas show

It’s pretty safe to say that we’re going to love anything that Karl Lagerfeld directs, and we think his brand new short film about the one and only Coco Chanel is going to be right up there with our favourites. The latest short film, entitled The Return, was written and directed by Kaiser Karl, the release of which will coincide with the Paris-Dallas 14 Métiers d’Art show which will take place in the Lone Star State. The film will depict Coco Chanel re-opening her Couture space in 1954, receiving criticism from the French press, and eventually working with Neiman Marcus among other things. The coveted lead role of Coco Chanel has gone to Charlie Chaplin’s daughter Geraldine Chaplin – and we think the casting has been spot on! Some familiar Chanel faces such as Anna Mouglalis, Lady Amanda Harlech and Rupert Everett will also be making an appearance, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for them. Will we see his kitty cat Choupette make a cheeky little cameo? Only time will tell! The Return will debut in Dallas, Texas on December 10th at 6:30 pm local time; us non-Texans can watch it on chanel.com! [Refinery 29]

Jennifer Lawrence dares to bare (her back) in Dior for Hunger Games: Catching Fire London premiere

After looking at her stunning InStyle US December cover yesterday, we had high hopes for Jennifer Lawrence’s appearance at the Hunger Games: Catching Fire premiere in London’s Leicester Square last night. And we certainly weren’t disappointed with the Oscar-winning actress’s red carpet look. We expected J-Law to wear a Christian Dior creation (you might as well make the most of being the face of Miss Dior while you can!) and that’s exactly what she did, choosing a gorgeous dress from the autumn/winter 2013 Couture collection for her appearance. Hew newly acquired pixie cut was perfect for the nature of the dress, as it showed off the intricate backless detail in all its glory. She kept all accessories to a minimum, leaving the multi-coloured bottom half of the dress to do all the standing out. Kudos for opting to wear Kurt Geider “London” shoes too – what a nice touch!

The 2013 MTV EMAs: Red carpet highlights

The 2013 MTV EMAs took place at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam last night, and although the event itself was full of controversial performances, award wins and questionable outfit choices (and that was just from Miley Cyrus, alone!), it was the arrivals red carpet that got most of our attention. As always, we were presented with the good, the bad, and the downright ugly… take a look at all the looks that got us talking below, and work out whether it was for all the right – or all the wrong – reasons. Jessica Biel is darling in Dior for Guggenheim International Gala

As jealous as we may be that she’s married to Hollywood heartthrob Justin Timberlake and we’re not, there’s no denying that Jessica Biel is one seriously hot and stylish lady. Jessica Biel attended the Guggenheim International Gala at the Guggenheim Museum in New York last night, and opted to wear a gorgeous Christian Dior Couture spring/summer 2013 dress for the occasion. The stars have been wearing a lot of Dior these past few days – some slightly better than others – but we think Mrs Timberlake gets top marks for her seductively simple ensemble. As with all Jessica Biel red carpet looks though, it was all about the attention to detail; the Dior droplet earrings that complemented the colours in her dress were to die for, as was her perfect smoky eye make-up. Oh and did we mention that we have total hair envy, too?

Minka Kelly vs. Dita Von Teese…Who wore Carolina Herrera better?

A one-gown-two-girls situation has presented itself once again, so we couldn’t let the chance of a fash-off slip our hands! This week, Dita Von Teese and actress Minka Kelly have us in awe of their matching Caroline Herrera Fall 2013 red carpet gowns, and, boy did the ladies do well. First to slip into the gorgeous, deep purple floral lace gown was Minka, who took to the Met Gala red carpet back in May, looking every bit show-stopping. Channelling the Gala’s punk theme best she could, Minka opted for a braided updo, accented perfectly with a dark lip, and finished with a waist-cinching belt to match. But giving Minka a run for her style cred was Dita Von Teese, who appeared in the same gown at Wallis Annenberg Centre For The Performing Arts Inaugural Gala, last month. Styled with her signature Fifties pin-up hair and a deep red lip, Dita carried a matching clutch and added the waist-cinching belt to her look, too. So, both ladies carried off the same stunning gown with aplomb, but being a fash-off, there can only be one winner… After winning our hearts for the second time around – she made it into our Met Gala red carpet roundup – we’re crowning Minka Kelly this fash-off’s champ. Dita’s look is faultless, too, but the recognisable hair and make-up makes it feel a little ‘samey’. Agree with our style verdict? Whose look wins for you? [Images: Minka; Dita]

Inspirational vs. Inane: Is the lure of the luxury good worth dreaming about?

If recent research is anything to go by, then the luxury goods industry is booming. Booming beyond cultural and financial borders; letting the emerging economies ride the Prada-lined wave of upscale consumerism, and shaking up the belief that the recession has been a turn off for spend-aholics. From Chopard to Chanel Couture and Piaget to Burberry; luxury expenditure hasn’t slowed down, and we’ve got China to thank for that, amongst newer markets such as Malaysia and India. But does the hike in highly priced goods being snapped up justify the production of what we here at MFL HQ like to call The Super Shopper’s Set? Point in case: this week’s super-spend wish list add-ons: Ray Ban’s £2,893 Aviator sunglasses (below) and, wait for it, the £70,000 platinum stilettos by House of Borgezie (pictured above). Items many of us don’t flinch at the idea of dropping a hot £100+ bomb on, and ones that are often our most prized possessions. If you’re not already gawking at these price tags in utter disbelief, we’ll describe the items in a little more detail. Said sunnies aren’t your average hide behinds, but, in fact, rimmed with an £18ct yellow gold frame. Not only that, but, only 1,200 have been put into production, further upping the exclusivity factor. Heels are the holy grail of a woman’s daily get-up (don’t deny it, you loafer-shod liars), and justifying a Jimmy Choo splurge is, often, a necessity. But what if you suddenly wanted a shoedrobe to rival Tamara Ecclestone’s? You’d be spoilt for choice trotting around in the custom-made Cleopatra stilettos, which can be crafted in platinum or 18ct white or yellow gold. We wouldn’t really blame you if the price tag processing part of your brain, as well your overstretched, extremely worried bank account may need to […]
