3 Ways To Fast-Track Your Place Into The Fashion Industry

Sashay across the catwalks like a long-legged fashionista, put yourself above Cara Delevingne in the food chain, and wear sartorial styles from the best designers in the world – these are the dreams of the fashion wannabe, and they seem further away than the moon. Indeed, the fashion world looks like the preserve of the elites to many. Everyone’s more beautiful than Greta Garbo, and that unattainable beauty makes it seem like an unreal profession, something that only exists in the world of films, the internet and television. But there’s more than one way to break into the fancy world of fashion – all you need is a little bit of forward planning and a hefty dose of determination. To give you a helping hand, we’ve come up with some suggestions of our own. See how you can incorporate them into your career plan. Get learning Distance learning was once the equivalent of a sapling pushing against the strong winds of brick-and-mortar universities. It struggled to find its place for decades, and most people couldn’t get past the fact that it was all so finicky. That was until the internet came along. Now, distance learning is a versatile and efficient way to earn a degree-based qualification in your chosen field. That means you can study fashion wherever you have a laptop and an internet connection. You can fit in a module during a long train journey or in your lunch break. You could even pass that final test while travelling in a foreign land. Major qualifications are available from providers like Anglia Ruskin Distance Learning – we recommend you give them a look. Get experience Little beats work experience when it comes to learning the ropes of your industry – and the fashion industry is no different. Provided you’ve got […]

A Sneak Peek At Spring Wedding Fashion For 2018

New year is barely behind us, and according to the met office, winter might still have some surprises in store, but on the catwalks around the world, spring is most definitely in the air. Nothing says “spring” like a wedding, so whether you are planning on tying the knot in the coming year, or just like to keep your finger on the pulse of what’s hot and what’s not, this seems like an ideal moment to take a look as some spring wedding fashions for 2018. Black is the new white The biggest names showed their cards at what is possibly the most well-known bridal fashion event of them all at the Metropolitan in New York at the end of last year, and the overriding impression was that black is definitely the new white where brides are concerned. Not that gothic weddings will suddenly be in, but a number of the top designers showcased black accents to the traditional white dress, including sophisticated bows, black hems and even one black ostrich feather ball gown skirt. Make up For tips of wedding make up, it is one thing to take some cues from New York, but those in the know tend to look a little closer to home for expert guidance. Sarah Meredith has worked as a bridal hair and make up artist for more than ten years and knows how to blend the latest fashion with practicality that will last throughout the big day. She feels that the “less is more” approach will never go out of fashion, particularly for a spring wedding, when the theme is all about newness and freshness. The top designers seemed to agree for the most part, and the fresh face and natural, glowing complexion was very much in evidence in New York. Having said […]

Men’s Fall Fashion Trends

September is upon us and the temperature has dropped considerably, which officially means that autumn is here. With autumn comes an inevitable style transition and new trends to follow. We’ve teamed up with Trendhim to talk you through some key autumn trends and how you can incorporate them into your wardrobe. Orange Bright orange is the colour of the moment right now. Whether you choose to channel it through a double tracksuit and give a nod to the sportswear trend, or simply wear an orange beanie hat or scarf, this is one trend to not miss out on. Sportswear Sportswear is the trend that just won’t seem to die, and for good reason! Super comfortable and easy to style means that streetwear styles like luxe tracksuits and hoodies are still dominating men’s fashion, for inspiration look to Tommy Hilfiger and Supreme. Varsity styles are also coming back into style this season so head to your local vintage shop to get your hands on some college apparel t-shirts. Whilst we’re on the topic of vintage, 90’s sportswear like zip-up Adidas waterproofs are also great pieces to get your hands on.   Earth tones Looking back at the catwalks of London, New York, Paris and Milan from earlier this year, it was clear to see the dominance of earthly tones such as khaki, browns, camels and mustard yellows. Pantone, the authority in colour, also named their colour of the year as a shade named ‘Greenery’, showing just how popular and influential these colours have proved to be in 2017.   This is such an easy trend to follow as the colours are so easy to wear and versatile. Some great pieces to wear include camel and Burberry-esque trench coats, deep brown leather bracelets and hunter green sweatshirts. Military In a slight continuation […]

A Guide To Milan For Fashion Lovers

Milan is paradise for fashionistas. Chic and sophisticated, the city is home to luxury brands, high-end boutiques and glamorous festivals that will leave you in awe and delight. Trendsetters walk the streets; the window displays will take your breath away. With so many shops, events and experiences to choose from, we wouldn’t blame you for feeling a little overwhelmed. To help you decide where to go and what to do, here are some of Milan’s highlights for fashion lovers: Fashion Week Fashion Week, of course, is Milan’s landmark event and it takes place bi-annually to exhibit seasonal collections from premium designers. As one of the four fashion giants alongside Paris, London and New York, Milan Fashion Week is something you won’t want to miss if you’re a serious fashion enthusiast. Although many of the shows are exclusive, invite-only events, just being in Milan while they are happening is a unique experience. Fashion gurus flock to the city. With careful planning, you might even manage to meet your style idols. A number of outdoor events also take place in locations like the Piazza Duomo, and these are often open to the public. The 2016 spring/summer women’s show is set to take place between the 21st and 27th September. Visitors start planning their Fashion Week trips months in advance, so if you want to make it to Milan in September, you’d better start shopping for flight deals soon. Driven By Style: Why The New DS 3 Is The Perfect Car For Fashion Lovers

To celebrate the launch of the new DS 3, last weekend I took a trip to Westfield London to see the luxury “avant-garde” car in all it’s glory and participate in a fun style challenge. Before I get into the ins and outs of the challenge I have to start by saying that the event space looked amazing. DS Automobiles took over Westfield London’s central atrium with various versions of the DS 3 Hatchback, Cabrio and Performance, an eye-catching installation with lots of bold and bright shirts and a huge screen playing the ad campaign which features our favourite 94 year old style icon and DS 3 brand ambassador Iris Apfel. Visitors also had the opportunity to participate in the campaign and strike a pose (or two) in a cute photo-booth for a chance to win a number of prizes including a styling session, a £500 Westfield Gift Card and use of the DS 3 for a week. Now I absolutely love Iris (she’s an absolute legend) so while I most definitely was looking forward to the style challenge, I have to admit, I was intrigued to find out a bit more about the DS 3 which has over 3 million personalisation options.  And I’m pleased to say I wasn’t disappointed at all. I completely understand the alignment with Iris. Known for breaking every single rule in the fashion book and more importantly for ignoring society’s norms to create a life of her choosing, the unique and stylish DS 3 is not only perfect for city dwellers but also for those who aspire to live life to the beat of their own drum. And with that in mind, the challenge was on to create an outfit inspired both by Iris’s aesthetic and the Parisian car. Armed with a £100 Westfield gift voucher and over 350 stores to choose […]

Our absolute fave has got to be this beauty worn by the even more beautiful Daisy Ridley at the London premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens held in Leicester Square. The 23 year old who plays Rey in the movie wore a gorgeous cut out embellished evening gown by Roland Mouret that left us with serious dress envy. Where Do Fashion Wholesalers Get Their Inspiration From?

Fashion wholesalers must concentrate their attention on a range of different outlets in order to gain inspiration and to keep on top of the trends to give the customers what they want. Fashion is a very fast business and trends and styles can change rapidly, depending on both the seasons and customer demands. Fashion powerhouse Zara, for example, only produces half of its seasonal stock and leaves room to respond to the market. Not all trends will necessarily catch on in retail and wholesale industries and often the client will want more of something or less of something else. Other trends can be incredibly popular and stick around for more than one season. This is something that wholesale fashion suppliers must think about when getting ahead in the fashion industry. Fashion can be a tricky business and requires a strong attention to detail, especially when producing women’s wholesale fashion. There can be strong influences from a variety of different places that can inspire and push wholesalers in a certain direction, and here are just a few. Fashion Shows Possibly the most obvious point of call for anyone working in fashion when it comes to inspiration is the catwalk. Designers across the world showcase their designs and upcoming trends with hundreds of models in fashion shows from Paris to New York, for both summer and winter collections. This could be one of the biggest influences for fashion wholesalers and definitely worth taking note. Fashion Weeks occur in New York, London, Milan and Paris twice a year, showcasing Autumn/Winter trends and designs around February, and Spring/Summer around September ready for the seasons ahead. This would surely be the Mecca for fashion enthusiasts as high-end designers define the latest developments in fashion months before they are due to hit the shelves. On top […]

The Cape: Fashion’s symbol of female empowerment

There’s no denying that 2014 will be remembered as the year of “girl power”. Victoria Beckham was named Britain’s most successful entrepreneur, Beyonce’s been nominated for 5 Grammy’s and this year saw Malala Yousafzai become the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate. The Spice Girls must be proud! So what better trend to end the year with than the ultimate fashion symbol of female empowerment – the cape. Is it just us or do you immediately picture Superwoman when you see the cape too? The cape stole the show at Solange’s wedding, Angelina Jolie gave the fashion item her seal of approval in a Saint Laurent velvet cape last week and Kylie wore a casual cape by FAY while out and about in London over the weekend. There’s a ton of caped options available at the moment and we love this collarless cape blazer courtesy of Lavish Alice. Pair with matching trousers and killer heels for an alternative to the party dress. Lavish Alice Collarless Cape Blazer, £54 available at ASOS.

From Chanel to Dior – why Paris is still the heart of fashion

When you think of Paris, fashion is always the first word that pops into your head. The City of Culture is known throughout the world for its high number of artists and designer residents, from painters selling their work on the streets in Montmatre, to the designers working for the world’s most prestigious fashion houses. Paris’ vibrant creative scene is the reason so many tourists flock to the city every year, to live out their dreams of renting a little studio in the Latin quarter and spending their days walking along the Seine, or sitting outside coffee shops watching the world’s most stylish residents walk by, now being made available to tourists through Housetrip for short tourism trips. The city has been the centre of the fashion industry since the reign of Louis XIV. The King was very enthusiastic about fashion and encouraged everyone at Versailles to follow suite. He demanded certain types of dress for certain events and started the first Parisian guild of seamstresses, made up of women endorsed by his highness to make clothes. In modern times, famous Parisians like Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior revolutionised the fashion industries of their eras. Coco Chanel influenced the way women dressed all over the world with her effortless and elegant clothes in the early 1920s, while Christian Dior invented the New Look after the war. In the 1960s, Yves Saint Laurent modernised the stuffy world of couture with his daring Le Smoking tuxedos for women. It’s a testimony to all three designers that their names live on as three of the biggest fashion houses in production today. Not only are their labels still around, but they are as desirable as ever. The fashion world still takes its lead from Paris. London, Milan and New York might […]

Discover your favourite cities in Europe at the weekend

People often talk about the world becoming a smaller place. This is thanks mainly to the travel opportunities available today that would have been simply unthinkable only a couple of generations ago. The Internet has enabled, empowered and encouraged people to not only book flights and accommodation but also research places to visit and compare prices to ensure they get the best value for money and the most active itinerary. Likewise, increased competition and variety within industries such as airlines and hotels have brought holidays like this into the financial reach of a whole new range of people. Increasingly, busy professionals with a free weekend and a bit of spare cash are realizing that with a little forward planning they can enjoy a mini holiday and go back to work on Monday morning with a range of new experiences to share. Planning a European city break If you really want to make the most of a weekend away in a European city, it pays to do a bit of planning. Here are some things you should think about before heading off: Compare prices. It is remarkably easy today to get the best value for money, simply by comparing prices of flights on sites such as Flights.com, as well as hotels and every other aspect of your trip. Do your research. While it is tempting to jump at the cheapest option, this is inherently risky, and sometimes you get what you pay for. Fortunately, the Internet has numerous review websites on which you can access independent, impartial reviews from fellow travelers. This will provide you with insight, including photos, of what a place is really like. Make an itinerary. As we all know, a weekend can fly by, and this is especially true when you are on holiday. To really make […]

Elizabeth Olsen sparkles in Elie Saab Couture for Godzilla London premiere

It looks like Elizabeth Olsen can rock a number of different looks quite effortlessly – none more so than the elegant look! Elizabeth attended the Godzilla premiere at London’s Leicester Square at the weekend, and looked breath-taking in a floor-sweeping Elie Saab Couture dress from the autumn/winter 2013 collection. We commend her decision not to ruin the aesthetic of the dress by covering up with a big coat or jacket – there was a bit of a chill in the London air on Saturday night, but you wouldn’t know it judging by her smiles in this picture. She let the sparkles on the dress do all the talking (and sparkling!) by choosing not to wear any jewellery on her neck, and instead, opting for some bedazzling earrings and subtle silver rings on her fingers.

Candice Swanepoel likes to gain weight before the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

We’ve heard countless stories about how Adriana Lima and her Victoria’s Secret Angel pals stick to a strict liquid diet before the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, but South African beauty Candice Swanepoel isn’t one of them. The 25-year-old VS Angel, who got the honour of wearing the coveted Fantasy bra last year, apparently loads up on meat before the show so she can be bigger and feel more womanly… “Last year I had to take a week off, because I get really nervous and all the muscle that I’ve built up I lose it really quickly if I get stressed out,” she said. “So I took my trainer to Brazil where I can eat a lot of meat because I like to be a little bigger for the show, just to feel sexier and more womanly. “I have a furious metabolism, especially when I travel so much. I can’t really do too much cardio or that sort of thing.” Most women – us included – would kill for a metabolism like Candice’s. Not fair, is it? Don’t forget, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show is coming to London later this year, which means we can admire Candice’s beauty at a much closer distance! [Telegraph]

Catch up on Kate Middleton’s New Zealand weekend outfits…

We have a lot of weekend Kate Middleton outfits to catch up on, so let’s waste no time in admiring all of the Duchess of Cambridge’s sartorial choices from her New Zealand tour. Kate visited the Rainbow Place children’s hospice in Waikato, making it clear that green was the colour of the day by wearing a jade green Erdem coat which fell just above the knee, and teamed it with a feminine, green and white ‘Budding Heart Silk Tea Dress’ from British label Suzannah and an instantly recognisable black Mulberry Bayswater clutch. We can’t fault this outfit so let’s move on! We also found no flaws with Kate’s outfit when she was pictured arriving at Dunedin International Airport. She looked sublime in a turquoise ensemble, which came from New Zealand born London based designer Emilia Wickstead – another one of her favourites if the amount of times she has worn one of her creations is anything to go by. And finally, in possibly one of our favourite outfits of the tour so far, is this red beauty from, Luisa Spagnoli. We think we love this ensemble the most because Kate not only stood there looking the picture of perfection in it, but because she also decided to play a spot of cricket in it as well. We know that Kate likes to muck in when it comes so sporting events, so we commend her for being able to give cricket a jolly good go in a pair of heels. We’re a tad jealous (not to mention puzzled) about her hair maintaining its style and shine even during sporting activity. Keep the great looks coming, Kate!

This Jean Paul Gaultier and Jennifer Saunders video is the funniest thing you’ll watch all week!

We don’t think we’ve ever laughed this much at a fashion-related video since Lena Denham and Hamish Bowles “prepared” for her Vogue US cover shoot in their own unique and special way… Keen to show that he’s always up for a laugh and doesn’t take himself too seriously is Jean Paul Gaultier, who has teamed up with the undisputedly funny Jennifer Saunders to create a side-splitting video for i-D. Although the video is meant to promote the brand new Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier at the Barbican, – which it does a very good job of – we also reckon it promotes the excellent Jean and Jen partnership the pair have going on. If he ever wants a break from fashion, we think JPG would make a fine comedy actor or even stand-up comedian. With lines from Jennifer Saunders such as “you make a dress out of a crocodile, and I’m making a dress for a crocodile!” we can’t urge you enough to watch the video for yourselves. The perfect Friday morning treat. Caution: you may want to pre-emptively hold your sides!

L’Wren Scott: A real tribute to an original fashion legend

Gianni Versace. Alexander McQueen. Isabella Blow. The fashion world has, sadly, become accustomed to the tragic loss of some of its most celebrated figures, but every time such news breaks, so do the hearts of millions. The untimely death of ethereally beautiful model-turned-stylist-turned-designer, L’Wren Scott, sent shock waves through the industry. Police suspect Scott committed suicide by hanging herself – a supposed reaction to the severe financial difficulties her eponymous fashion label was facing – but it’s the distorted news angles and subsequent furore in the aftermath of her passing that has caused for much concern. From news headlines addressing Scott as simply ‘Mick Jagger’s girlfriend’ to focusing on her personal weaknesses and professional shortcomings, rather than the contribution she made to the world and industry she inhabited; it has almost diluted the gravity of the situation, diverting attention from the real problem Scott faced: depression – for which a great case was laid down in this Guardian article. Jagger, left equally baffled and bereft by the death of his long term lover, dedicated a heartfelt statement on his personal site, but it’s not this loved up, starry association we should be channelling all our energy into berating. No. Leave the man to peacefully mourn as we would anyone who’d lost someone so dear and, instead, let’s celebrate Scott’s independence; her ability to hold her own and steer a fashion empire; her passion to create scintillating fashion showpieces and her modelling heyday, when she was celebrated as the woman with the longest legs in Britain. If we remind ourselves of the real reasons the world envied someone who so tragically lost their life way, way before their time, it deems redundant the need to bring to the fore cruel speculations. Below, we leave you with the real reason Scott was […]

Indian Fashion Designers Introduce London Business School to Creativity

London Business School has employed the services of two highly acclaimed fashion designers to help students understand Indian fashion better. Students will be taught how to harness the Indian fashion industry that has long been something of a sleeping giant, but has made in-roads to becoming a global superpower. Narendra Kumar and Azeem Khan, will be helping London Business School understand the business side of the Indian fashion industry and help them anticipate how the market will continue to evolve. Second year students involved in a college trip to Mumbai met with the critically acclaimed designers, and Superna Motwane of Apricot Publications. The trip to the capital of Maharashtra is chance for the students to really get an understanding of the Indian business landscape and how enterprises and individuals are adapting to the changing landscapes. Narendra Kumar has been referred to as the King of Menswear by the Huffington Post. Kumar first came to the attention of the fashion world during the 2011 Lakme Fashion Week with his Autumn/Winter range. His use of lustrous sapphire, ruby and midnights blues gave his range instant personality and widespread appeal. Azeem Khan has however built up a reputation for more outlandish styles and a master of haute couture fashion. The three Indian ambassadors gave their predictions for the future of Indian fashion and upcoming trends. From the classic style of the Maharajas to the Bollywood look of today – the rich tapestry of Indian fashion and style is being explored in greater depth than ever. Fashions items such as Bandh Gala, Jubbas and Jodhpurs are gracing red carpets around the World more commonly than ever. Amelia Whitelaw, Director of Global Experiences, London Business School explained: “The Global Business Experience (GBE) offers an opportunity for second year MBA students to experience dynamism in the […]

Milan Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Moschino, Fendi, Prada & more

We have no idea why Milan Fashion Week isn’t as popular as New York, London or Paris, because the latest collections to debut on the Italian catwalks were out of this world. We don’t think Giorgio Armani is going to have too much of a tough time getting support for MFW if the latest shows from Moschino, Prada, Fendi and Just Cavalli were anything to go by. Jeremy Scott’s first collection for Moschino was always going to be an interesting one, and we definitely think he met expectations and pulled a stellar collection – and catwalk show – out the bag! Jeremy Scott showcased everything from a revamped McDonalds logo to everyone’s favourite little underwater creature, Spongebob Squarepants, to all-else in-between. Katy Perry and Rita Ora showed no signs of a hangover – despite partying until the wee hours of the morning after attending the Brits – as they were the modelling guests of honour on the Moschino autumn/winter 2014 catwalk. The ladies stole the show as they strutted down the catwalk to take their well-deserved seats in the front row to watch the rest of the new-season pieces make their debut. If they ever fancy a career change, we definitely think they have what it takes to make it big in the modelling world! If we could take only two things away from the Fendi autumn/winter 2014 show, it would be the Karl Lagerfeld doll/handbag which Cara Delevingne (who was walking exclusively for Fendi, may we add) carried down the catwalk, Georgia May Jagger’s outfit. We love GMJ at the best of times, but her appearance on the Fendi catwalk was above and beyond anything we could have ever expected. Kaiser Karl himself described the Fendi collection as brutal and poetic, and we definitely got that memo given all the […]

Milan Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, Versus Versace & more

Time to watch the unveiling of the autumn/winter 2014 trends from behind our computer screens, as London Fashion Week is well and truly over (sniff) and the fack pack has now flocked to Italy for Milan Fashion Week! Milan certainly doesn’t mess about, as it’s straight down to business on day 1 with collections from Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, Versus Versace and Fausto Puglisi. Gucci went in a little bit of a different direction this season, as Frida Giannini took inspiration from the boys – more specifically, the Gucci menswear collection – for the autumn/winter 2014 threads. She juxtaposed her most androgynous garments with the girliest of pieces for a versatile, retro collection.   Gone was the overt sexiness that we’ve come to know from the brand – especially if last season was anything to go by – and a softer, vintage collection was in its place. Soft pink oversized coats, geek chic glasses, slim fit trousers in a super-flattering silhouette, mod-inspired outerwear, the lot. Alberta Ferretti was influenced by nature for her latest collection, trees, leaves, and bird feathers all made an appearance on her new-season pieces.  It wasn’t all woodland inspired though, as typical Alberta embellishments, sequins and silhouettes were also present, making for another versatile and somewhat wholly wearable collection. Fausto Puglisi was clearly inspired by the Big Apple, as the Statue of Liberty made several appearances on t-shirts and jumpers alike. The designer presented a casual cool collection for the effortlessly chic and stylish Fausto Puglisi girl; fun, flirty, body confident girls with everything to live for! And then we had Donatella Versace’s efforts for the Versus Versace autumn/winter 2014 collection. Donatella’s influence was very much present in the entire collection, which you can see with the tight leather dress and leather biker jacket. Typical rock and roll […]

WATCH: LFW AW14 highlights from Temperley London, Mary Katrantzou & more

MARY KATRANTZOU AW14 COLLECTION She may have been dubbed the digital print queen by way of her hypnotising design USP of seasons past, but Mary Katrantzou took a refreshing detour this season. Dizzying print work was replaced by symbols that held a deeper meaning; school badges, medals, clock faces, a coat of arms all made an appearance, intricately embroidered onto fuzzy sweatshirts, patchworked onto maxi skirts and running down pleated gowns to resemble a holy vestment. Suits cut in jacquard are set to become the fashion set’s new favourites, and one in particular – a bird-print skirt suit with pleated gym-skirt – demanded attention. Delicate slips dresses with hook straps featured a metal mesh adorned with gold-tone hearts, squares and pearls, tricking onlookers into believing they were admiring an art installation. Well, we were certainly in awe. TEMPERLEY LONDON AW14 COLLECTION Temperley London may hail from the leafy enclaves of Somerset, but, designer Alice Temperley didn’t stick to the quiet side for autumn/winter ’14. Bringing her signature decorative style to the table, Byzantine architecture-inspired prints were splashed across unbuttoned coats, tightly belted at the waist. Pretty skirt suits were updated with a boxier silhouette, while stained glass-imitating laser prints prettily played out across red carpet worthy dresses. New for this season, however, was the concept of layering luxe evening looks: an oversize fur stole in a fluffy peach hue was breathtaking over a shawl and barely there gown; while neck scarves, outerwear and shawls daubed in striking floral prints were the accessory du jour to seek protection from the winter chill. Just perfect. RICHARD NICOLL AW14 COLLECTION As blue emerges to be the hue of the hour for next season, Richard Nicoll didn’t hold back in feeding our appetite for the coldest shade-gone-hot. School girl attire-gone-haute was the message here, […]

New York Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Jenny Packham, Vera Wang, Proenza Schouler & more

New York Fashion Week has well and truly got us geared up for London Fashion Week which kicks off tomorrow! The last of the shows – from Michael Kors to Oscar de la Renta to Jenny Packham, and more – certainly didn’t let us down, as we were met with everything from red carpet Oscar-worthy ensembles to essential winter cover-ups to all else in-between. Kate Middleton’s Jenny Packham look at the National Portrait Gallery was an exellent reminder of how wow-worthy the designer’s pieces can be – a thought which was only reiterated when we saw the autumn/winter 2014 collection float down the runway. Although the collection was reportedly inspired by Bianca Jagger, there were sartorial influences dating as far back as the 1930s in the collection; the glittering gold dress was a particular favourite of ours, and one which we predict might appear on an awards season red carpet this year. Vera Wang, who has dressed a number of our fave A-listers including the most recent celeb bride Kaley Cuoco who went against the grain and opted for a pink wedding down, went for romance – but not as we know it. Dark romance was the theme for the designer’s autumn/winter 2014 collection, with lots of black and charcoal coloured pieces making their debut on the Big Apple catwalk. There was also an abundance of tartan – a definite AW14 trend we need to look out for over the next few weeks! Although Blake Lively and Freida Pinto were among the famous faces who sat on the front row wearing some very feminine and floral Michael Kors spring/summer 2014 pieces, the designer’s latest collection had a hint of androgyny about it. Rich, luxe fabrics were juxtaposed with casual cool tailoring, offering us a very covetable autumn/winter collection that we’ll […]

Brush up on your French in time for Paris Fashion Week!

Ok, so fashion month is underway and the last stop is of course, our favourite city Paris! In a bid to be able to communicate better with our fellow French fashionista’s (without the aid of our translation dictionary) we decided to brush up on our French in time for the last week of fashion month with the aid of Rosetta Stone’s TOTALe course. At £20 per month or £240 up front, the course promises the ability to engage in conversations, share ideas, make new friends with your new found conversational skills and best of all the ability to negotiate complex situations…a skill definitely needed to handle the madness that is fashion week. So, naturally we jumped at the chance to give the TOTALe course a go…. The online subscription is available for a 6 or 12 month duration. Stages of learning start at Level 1 and the course is completed once you make it to Level 5 (if you’re a bit more advanced than us you can skip to the level best suited to you). Each level starts with a core lesson and continues with lessons that individually cover pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing. Reviews to check your progress are interspersed within the levels. The pronunciation lessons are priceless…voice recognition allows the system to pass or fail you if you’re pronunciation is incorrect which is great. There’s nothing worse than having a conversation with terrible pronunciation. Completion of each level unlocks a fun learning game that can be played solo or with fellow language learners online. The course also includes some great apps to help track progress and the chance to book four sessions a month with a native French-speaking tutor. Did the course deliver on its promise? Well, yes. It’s very easy to follow and the interactivity doesn’t […]

7 fab Fashion Month essentials!

For some people, February is all about Valentine’s Day, but for all the budding fashionistas in the world, the month of Feb is all about fashion. New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week – all four cities which have their own distinctive and irreplaceable style! So, dressing for Fashion Month – regardless of the city or how much show-watching you’ll actually be doing – has to be done right. You need to get the dressing for the chill and dressing stylishly balance just right. We think we’ve got it sorted with our seven suggestions below; what say you? 1. Ah the great Fashion Week footwear dilemma! Do you go for sky high heels to complement your cute dress and to be the same height as the rest of the ladies and models or do you go for comfort? Nine times out of 10 we would have gone for the former, but since flat shoes are loved by the likes of Alexa Chung and Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, we think we’re going to go for flats this season. Plus just think how warm these boots will be? 2. The bag is probably one of the most important accessories. If you’re a high fashion magazine editor, a celebrity or someone who won’t be working at Fashion Week, by all means go for an adorable little clutch bag that fits a mobile phone and extra lippie – especially if you’re being chauffeured around from show to show. But for the rest of us who have to slum it and walk to shows, a good sized bag to fit everything from iPads to chargers to make-up bags to an extra pair of flats to food (yes we all need to refuel between shows) is absolutely vital! 3. […]

British Fashion Council announces this season’s Fashion Forward winners

The British Fashion Council has just announced which three womenswear designers have been awarded the Fashion Forward prize for the autumn/winter 2014 season, and they are… drumroll please… J.JS Lee, Nasir Mazhar and Sophia Webster (pictured). Congrats to three very deserving recipients! “Jackie, Nasir and Sophia have come through the ranks and couldn’t be more deserving of this level of recognition,” says Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council. “Each of them has a very distinctive design aesthetic, their visions are very different from one another, however together they very much share the limelight that is shining on London right now.” The award is sponsored by the Mayor of London, and gives the winners financial support and business advice. The designers are in good company in receiving the prize, as previous winners have included David Koma, Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou, Meadham Kirchhoff, Jonathan Saunders and Peter Pilotto. All three designers will show their new collections during London Fashion Week next month – we look forward to seeing what they’ve cooked up! [Harper’s Bazaar]

Manolo Blahnik swaps London for New York

Looks like Manolo Blahnik’s time in London was short lived, as the designer is boarding a plane for the Big Apple next month. Despite showing on schedule for the first time at London Fashion Week in September, the designer will now be heading to New York Fashion Week to debut his new season collection. “Last season’s presentation in London was an experiment for us as we have never been on schedule before,” he said. “We had a very positive response, so this season we decided to give a chance to the New York audience to get an insight into how my imagination works. Next season we might take it to another city – who knows? I would like to directly communicate what I do and my inspirations to people in different cities. “I adore London, it’s my home,” he said. “I am not abandoning London and definitely will be back in the future.” We should hope so, too! Do we think he will head to Paris or Milan in September for the spring/summer 2015 season? Only time will tell! [Vogue]

Fearne Cotton casually colour coordinates in London

There’s nothing like a bit of casual style inspiration, especially as awards season is fast approaching and we’re going to be inundated with high glamour red carpet looks in the next couple of weeks. Fearne Cotton not only showed us how to do casual cool, but she also showed us how to do colour coordination to the max, as the yummy mummy stepped out in London in a cute and very cosy looking checked coat that matched her newly dyed pink hair perfectly. She rocked a fierce pair of leather trousers with some chunky heeled ankle boots, all of which were topped off very nicely with the ultimate celeb accessory: oversized sunnies. It doesn’t look like Fearne Cotton has let the brutal chill and strong winds of London get her down, and we’re putting that down to her bright and ultra-cute outfit. Pass the hair dye! [Image]

Christmas shopping in London? Treat yourself with a beauty treatment or two!

[noskim] Although Christmas Day is supposed to be a calming and relaxing experience spent with the family (unless you’ve been nominated as Christmas dinner chef, in which case that might not necessarily apply) but the lead-up to Christmas, especially two weeks before, can be pretty stressful. And we all know that stress can take its toll on our faces, bodies, and mind. Therefore, we think it’s absolutely essential to be a little bit selfish this Christmas and take some time and money out and treat yourself. If you’re planning on venturing into London to do some Christmas shopping why not take advantage of the great deals on beauty treatments available in the city. There are lots of treatments out there to make you look and feel fabulous this festive season, and we can’t recommend them enough; here are five to get you started, but feel free to treat yourself to even more if your heart desires. 1. Mani and pedi. Don’t waste your time and money buying all the mani and pedi essentials at your local drug store, and leave your hands in the hands of the professionals. Not only will you get a flawlessly applied shiny colour on your hands and feet, but you’ll also get a relaxing massage too. Definitely not something you can do yourself! Not the tricky part is deciding on the shade… 2. HD Eyebrows. This is an all-the-rage treatment for the celebs, so you know it’s got to be good if the A-listers swear by HD brows. Banish those tweezers and make your brows come to life. There are lots of places for HD brows in London and the surrounding areas, most of which have excellent reviews so you know you’ll be in safe hands. Cara Delevingne won’t have anything on you by the time […]

Who won what at the 2013 British Fashion Awards…

We’ve been talking about them for months, so we think you know by now that the British Fashion Awards took place in London last night. The most stylish and fashionable faces rocked up in their finest attire for the lavish ceremony, and they certainly didn’t disappoint as far as their red carpet attire was concerned. More red carpet style a little later on, but first of all let’s recap who won what… The most coveted award of the evening – British Womenswear Designer of the Year – which was last year won by Stella McCartney went to, drumroll please, Christopher Kane! 2013 is definitely his year, as he also walked away with the Scottish Designer of the Year prize a few months ago. Burberry also did very well last night, as it picked up the award for British Brand of the Year as well as Menswear Designer of the Year, while JW Anderson walked away with the New Establishment Designer award. Nicholas Kirkwood and Erdem won the respective Accessory Designer of the Year  and Red Carpet gongs. It wasn’t just about the designers though; Edie Campbell won Model of the Year, while Harry Styles was crowned British Style Award winner by the public. (Was he the one you voted for?) And of course, as we told you last week, Kate Moss picked up the Special Recognition Award  which was presented to her by her good friend Marc Jacobs. Phew – we think that’s everything. Come back later for a full roundup of the best red carpet style from last night’s event.

Kate Moss to get Special Recognition at British Fashion Awards

We think next week’s British Fashion Awards are going to be bigger and better than ever – especially for our home girl Kate Moss who will be receiving the Special Recognition Award to celebrate her 25-year career in the fashion industry. We couldn’t think of anyone more deserving! The supermodel has had more magazine covers than we have had hot dinners, and been the face of countless ad campaigns – as well as her own collections with Topshop and Carphone Warehouse – so to say she has been busy these past 25 years would be a bit of an understatement. Kate will collect the award on Monday December 2nd at the London Coliseum; journalist Suzy Menkes will also be receiving a Special Recognition prize, so Kate is in great company! Oh, and we know we told you a few weeks ago that David Walliams would be hosting the event, but he has been forced to pull out due to ill health, so Jack Whitehall is stepping in instead. He has some big shoes to fill but we are confident Jack will do us proud. And get well soon, David! [Image]

Giorgio Armani pledges to save Milan Fashion Week

Yesterday we told you that yet another brand was leaving Milan Fashion Week as we revealed that Miu Miu will now be showcasing its new-season collections in Paris… and Giorgio Armani isn’t too happy about it. The designer has now become a board member of the National Chamber of Italian Fashion which basically aims to spice up Milan Fashion Week. “While I still believe that all Italian brands should hold their fashion shows in Italy to give due prominence to our country, as an entrepreneur I understand that certain situations, created over the years, need time to be reorganized,” reads a statement from Armani. “It seems only right, and indeed necessary, for me to send a further strong signal of commitment and confidence aimed at boosting an upswing in the vitality of Italian fashion and, at the same time, to show a sign of support for the actions undertaken by the other brand members of the National Chamber of Italian Fashion. In recent years, Milan has struggled to compete with New York, London and Paris in terms of interest (even Anna Wintour wasn’t too fussed about MFW last season, remember?) but we hope that Mr Armani’s involvement will reinvigorate Milan Fashion Week and put it right up there with the rest of its fashionable counterparts. New Look compares stats from all four Fashion Month cities – which one came out on top?

Did you know that New York Fashion Week was the most talked about of all four cities on those good old social networking sites this September? Oh yes, and Victoria Beckham – along with Alexander Wang and DKNY – were the top designer Twitter trends. Does that surprise you? We can never have enough VB, but we thought that as it spanned the most days and boasted and some of the biggest fashion Houses from Dior to Chanel presenting their collections, Paris Fashion Week would have walked away with that title. What do you guys think? You can check out loads of fun facts and statistics about Fashion Month in the infographic compiled by New Look above, which also contains info about celebrity appearances in all four cities, how much visitors spent, and most importantly of all, what the themes and trend highlights were. Despite all the stats though, New Look’s favourite city is our wonderful capital – London – which is why we were quite biasedly more than happy to share this information with you. Do you agree with New Look – is London the most stylish of all four cities?

Anna Kendrick is Worst Dressed of the Week in Alberta Ferretti

You know that gutting feeling you get, when a show-stopping runway look just doesn’t translate so brilliantly in real life? Yeah, that. And, sadly, we’re suffering from a serious case of it this week. Disappointing us in a runway-to-real-life situation this week is Anna Kendrick, who took to the red carpet for the screening of Drinking Buddies during the 57th BFI London Film Festival, earlier this week, in a spring/summer 2014 Alberta Ferretti skirt and crop top ensemble. Although the floral wash has winter bloom appeal, the runway look was by far our favourite; a slice of midriff was on show, whilst ribbon-tie flats and drop earrings in vibrant orange sealed the sartorial deal. OK, we get it, we know. The model on the runway, what with her endless legs and Amazonian glow, was bound to look impeccable. But on Anna, the look just didn’t sit right. The full-bodied A-line skirt we love, but the crop top fell awkwardly on the waist band, concealing the waist-cinching effect of the skirt. The simple black pumps and matching clutch go well with the bold look, but we’re digging a little more midriff display! Top marks for hair and make-up, though. What do you think? Is our WDOTW a fair decision? [Image: Zimbio]

Roksanda Ilincic opens first London store!

Victoria Beckham’s London store isn’t the only one we have to look forward to next year, as it’s just been announced that Roksanda Ilincic will be coming to London! The designer will be opening her first ever store in London’s Mayfair – 9 Mount Street to be exact – at the beginning of next year, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome her (and her stunning designs) to our fine Capital. “Opening our first store is a huge milestone for me,” the designer said about the new chapter in her professional life. “It is crucial that it is here in London, and this incredible Mount Street site is the perfect location. “The store will be the home for the brand in more ways than one, and will be the ideal space for my vision for the label to be fully realised.” Roksanda is in good company too, as Mount Street is also home to the likes of Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin, Lanvin, Balenciaga and more. To gear us up for the launch of her new store, Roksanda has joined forces with Gary Card to create a three-week-long installation in the shop window that will feature eight of her iconic dresses. The dresses will be up for grabs exclusively at Net a Porter should you wish to purchase a little piece of history. We can’t wait for the shop to open- we’ll let you know the exact opening date as soon as soon as we find out! [Vogue]

How to plan a glamorous fashion party

You may have missed out on London, Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks this season, leaving you to pine for glitz, glamour and gorgeous make-up. Life just isn’t fair sometimes… If you’re in a fashion coma (dreaming of Dior and Christopher Kane) it’s time you did something about it. Not by registering for nest season’s shows but by living out your fashion fantasy for real. Host your own fabulous fashion party to rival the big four and put your most fashionable foot forward. Here we look at how to do it. Fabulous food and drink Wherever you decide to hold your party, it will benefit from some professional catering staff to hand out snacks and drinks throughout the evening. Champagne cocktails, smoked salmon canapés and miniature cupcakes will ooze style and make your guests feel A-List. Having all these staff around will leave you free to swan about as the Anna Wintour of the evening too; great for networking. Need catering staff? Try a professional agency who will match their staff to suit your event. Send out VIP passes Like all the biggest events, you’ll need to create a little hype around your fashion party. With your invitations, send out VIP passes to ‘(Insert your name here) Fashion Week’. The intrigue will be killing your guests: What does my VIP pass get me? What IS this new fashion event? What happens at a fashion party? Give a few clues, and of course, include the dress code! Get the décor right Leave no detail to chance and dress your room to match the occasion. Paris Fashion Week SS14 highlights from Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen & more

We don’t think anyone’s going to forget the penultimate and final days of Paris Fashion Week and Fashion Month any time soon. Yesterday saw the likes of Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Valentino present their respective spring/summer 2014 collections, while today the world proudly watched as Marc Jacobs debuted his final collection while at the Louis Vuitton helm. It’s been emotional! It was all very bright, fun, colourful and youthful on the Chanel catwalk, as the Grand Palais show space was cleverly made up like an art gallery. We always wonder what Karl Lagerfeld will think of to one-up himself every season, and we’re rarely disappointed with what he and the team have up their sleeves. There was a subtle nod to the 50s and 60s thanks to the prints, colours and boots, but there was also a modern twist on classic Chanel pieces too. A real mixed bag that had us foaming at the mouth from start to finish. Cara Delevingne’s multi-colour one-shouldered dress was definitely one of our highlights! Marc Jacobs was on the complete opposite end of the spectrum for his final Louis Vuitton collection. The classic Louis Vuitton graffiti print came out to play, as did grungier elements such as mesh, fishnets, and more black than you can shake a stick at. Marc Jacobs definitely ensured he went out with an almighty bang as both show and collection were breathtaking! Elsewhere in Paris, Sarah Burton went warrior and tribal for the Alexander McQueen SS14 collection – the models even came complete with their very own helmets – while the theme of the Valentino collection was somewhat regal and medieval. And that’s it, guys. Fashion Month is well and truly over for another season! What have been your highlights from the New York, London, Milan and Paris catwalks? Louis […]

Miley Cyrus is Worst Dressed of the Week

She may have graced the cover for the October issue of Harper’s Bazaar in a gorgeously understated Burberry Prorsum number, but that’s not getting Miley Cyrus off the hook as Worst Dressed of the Week! When she wasn’t looking all demure and crimson-lipped on a glossy cover, the twerking enthusiast was actually playing dress up as a fashion casualty! Miley recently took to the streets of London in a rather peculiar looking Jean Paul Gaultier hybrid trouser, which made for some interesting viewing. Part sheer legging, part wide leg trouser, she continued the horrifying all-black outfit party with a matching bra top (a regular occurrence in Miley’s uber-eccentric (read: barely visible) wardrobe), face-swallowing sunglasses and lashings of gold jewellery. Looking like the lovechild of a Goth and a gangster (no, really), Miley finished off her ‘special’ look with a rather ostentatious, dare we say it, Chanel handbag. Not one to take the subtle approach, the ultra-chunky gold medallion belt pretty much stretched our sartorial tolerance level to the limit! We’re all for Miley’s wacky wardrobe of late, but please quit the visual trickery and either don trousers OR leggings, not both. A pair of skinny black jeans or wide-leg black trousers could’ve turned this look around, with a slash of sexy midriff sans all that stomach-turning bling, to top it off nicely. Whaddaya say? Milan Fashion Week SS14 highlights from Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, DSquared2 and more

Two cities down, two more to go. We’ve waved goodbye to London Fashion Week (it was an emotional, action-packed, unforgettable five days!), so it’s now it’s time to focus our attention onto the catwalks and designers of Milan Fashion Week. And the collections showing on the first day of MFW included Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, DSquared2 and Luisa Beccaria. Alberta Ferretti took flower power to a whole new level, and went beyond her signature softness that we associate her collections with. Although there were minimal feminine pastels in floaty romantic pieces which opened the show, they were juxtaposed with vibrant, bold shades and patterns as the show went on, proving that she is stepping out of her comfort zone and branching into more vivid and adventurous territory. Blake Lively, the face of Gucci Premiere, was of course present on the front row for the fashion House’s spring/summer 2014 show, and we definitely think she eyed up a few potential red carpet outfits from the selection that came out on the runway. Or maybe even gym outfits, as the collection had a somewhat sporty aesthetic to it. Backless garments were once again very prominent on this catwalk (it was a recurring theme in New York and in London this season), as were loose-fitting dresses and seventies inspired silhouettes. Gucci DSquared2 Luisa Beccaria

5 Unspoken fashion week rules we’re breaking

Tomorrow marks the beginning of a 5-day celebration of fashion in the near future. Editors, bloggers, camera wielders and, sadly, some desperate-to-get-papped individuals dressed to kill (no, not literally) will descend on Somerset house and the surrounding locale for a working week (yes, weekends are working days in fashion) of next season galore. Whilst writhing with faux fur coat-induced heat rash in an overcrowded tent (sorry, we know its gross), we’ll be drooling over summer-appropriate wares in perky shades, and, possibly turning a certain shade of absinth at the perfect mid-riff/nipple/flash of bum cheek on show. But even though we’ve just waved off summer, and squeezed into jeans after weeks in skirts, we’re excited for what lies ahead. But with the flurry of fashion and bright lights during fashion week come a few rules. A few unspoken commandments the style set swear by, and, often don’t swerve from observing. But being the trailblazers of anarchy (we think) we are, we’re breaking away from the norm this season, and travelling to the dark side: the side where coffee swilling and heel-shod feet are banned and food is in abundance – but not of the microscopic, gone-before-you-see it, canapé variety! So, to celebrate the beginning of fashion week in the city that flies the flag for innovative design, regularly detours from the norm and champions the unexpected, here are the five fashion week rules NOT to observe this season: Endless coffee hits: On your fifth flat white? Befuddled from a black coffee OD? Stop. Right. Now! Too much caffeine will only turn you into a stressed mess (although a fabulously dressed one), so why not replace your hit with a freshly pressed juice? Flavoured water is winner, too, or just stick to gold ole’ H2O. After all, all that after-party alcohol needs […]

New York Fashion Week SS14 highlights from Tory Burch, Jenny Packham, J Crew & more

Another day of New York Fashion Week and another fine selection of spring/summer 2014 pieces making their way down the catwalks. If we were going to give a prize to most literal translation of spring/summer, it would definitely go to Tory Burch thanks to her latest collection which came complete with  cypress trees, sundresses and more flower designs than you can shake a stick at. Big hair, don’t care! The models’ hairstyles may have been large and in charge, but the attention was still commanded by Jenny Packham’s signature breathtakingly beautiful pieces. Jenny Packham did what Jenny Packham does best and showcased a stunning collection comprised of glamorous, effortless pieces that the models floated along the runway in. It was almost like they were walking on air! We hope Kate Middleton gets her hands into one of these pieces! It was a totally different story over at Marc by Marc Jacobs, as relaxed silhouettes dominated the catwalk. The designer’s trademark pyjama styles made an appearance, as did varsity jackets, cheerleading dresses and basketball uniforms. We were waiting with particularly baited breath for Sass & Bide, as the Australian designers were showing in the Big Apple for the first time after showing at London Fashion Week  for the last six years. Feminine silhouettes were juxtaposed withy slightly androgynous shapes, creating an all-together sharp and expertly tailored collection. Fashion Scout ‘Ones to Watch’ designers revealed

We officially have London Fashion Week fever as we come to the realization that we are in fact only a matter of weeks away from it. While we love seeing what fave designers Stella McCartney, Henry Holland, Matthew Williamson and the rest of the well-known gang are up to, London Fashion Week is also about discovering new and upcoming talent… and that’s exactly what the Ones To Watch showcase at the Freemason Hall is all about. And the lucky – and super-talented – designers to feature in this season’s showcase are: Hannah Williams, Helen Lawrence and Renli Su. “This season presents a diverse range of exciting new talent,” said Martyn Roberts, director of Fashion Scout. “Ones To Watch is renowned globally for showcasing a highly creative selection of new talents and forms a recognised launch pad for the next generation of designers.” Hannah Williams won the Graduate Fashion Week Innovation and Womenswear Awards, while Central Saint Martins graduate Helen Lawrence worked at Alexander McQueen and Mark Fast. Renli Su (whose design is pictured) studied at China Central Academy of Fine Arts and the London College of Fashion. We bet we’ll be hearing a lot more of these names in the near future so watch this space. [Vogue]
