8 Ways To Nail Eco-Friendly Travel

Whether backpacking across the planet or staying in the most luxurious five-star hotels, everyone has their preferred way to travel that aligns with their lifestyle. They relish the chance to get away from the humdrum nature of work, school, and responsibilities, and instead go on an adventure whenever the mood strikes them. But, just because you can go anywhere you want (at least, when the world is normal, anyway), doesn’t mean that you should. The irony of travelling is how many people claim to love the planet, but will use ecologically harmful means to travel. If travel is a passion, the idea of leaving it all behind is something you don’t want to think about. But no one is saying to abandon travel altogether. Instead, ask yourself if you can find a more sustainable way to see the world.  Stay Close  It shouldn’t be a surprise that the further you travel, the more damage you do to the environment. If you take a plane from London to Sihanoukville in Cambodia, your carbon footprint is 2.93 tonnes of CO2e. This is a lot, by the way, especially if you are only travelling for a few weeks to enjoy the beach.  Instead of going across the world, think about staying closer to home. The best UK beaches may not have the same exotic reputation as Southeast Asia or the South American coasts, but they can still give you the break you need. Over the past year, Staycations have become the only option to get away from home, and there’s more to see in your home country than you might expect.  Use Sustainable Vehicles  Most of the time, the only way to travel is via aeroplane, but if you have eco-friendly travel alternatives, then why not explore them? Very few people enjoy taking […]

How to Decorate a Bathroom From Start to Finish

The design and appearance of your bathroom can instantly set your mood – and make an impression with guests visiting your home for the first time. Accordingly, it’s one of the most difficult rooms of the house to design and decorate. Your choices will have a big impact, and you’ll have a lot of decisions to make along the way. So what’s the best way to decorate a bathroom? Choose a Theme or Overall Style Before you start looking at different materials or brainstorming about the pieces to include in the room, get yourself focused on an overall theme or style. For example, do you want your bathroom to be sleek, clean, and modern? Or are you interested in something a little quirkier and fun? Do you have any theme ideas in mind? For example, would you like your bathroom to remind you of the beach, or do you want to have plants and greenery in your surrounding? Select the Right Materials When people walk into your bathroom for the first time, they’re going to notice the fixtures in your surroundings. They’re going to look at the faucet, the countertops, the tub, and the toilet. For most of these features, you’ll have a wide range of options in terms of materials. For example, you might want something like cultured marble. Cultured marble is more durable than many of the options on the market, and it’s non-porous, so it’s easy to clean. It can also be customized into any shape and it offers a wide range of different textures and colors – so you can make it fit with almost any theme. But cultured marble is far from the only material worth considering. You might prefer wood for a classic look, or tile if you’re looking for something more conventional. You […]

How To Get The Best Travel Insurance

Whether you’re going away for business or pleasure, travel insurance is a must. No matter where your destination is, you’ll want to ensure that you have access to medical care if you need it. While no-one wants to think about falling ill or being injured, being prepared for every eventuality will give you peace of mind. It’s important to note that if you’ve been injured while traveling and having trouble with your insurance claim for your medication, it is best to contact a NJ personal injury lawyer to get legal advice and help you get the compensation you deserve.  However, finding the best insurance policy isn’t always easy. With so many different options, it can be hard to decide which one is right for you. To make things easier, take a look at these top tips for finding the best travel insurance now: 1. Start Dates Some insurance policies only cover the period that you’re away from home, whereas others start from the moment your application is approved. If something happens weeks before you’re due to depart and you’re forced to cancel your trip, for example, you could claim on your insurance, providing the policy covers this type of situation.  When you’re booking a trip well in advance, it can be useful to choose a policy that offers this extra coverage. You never know what the future might hold, so the additional cover could come in handy if anything unexpected happens before you’re due to go away.  2. Single vs. Multi-Trip Cover If you travel regularly, a yearly travel insurance policy could be the most cost-effective option for you. However, if you don’t travel frequently, single trip cover is likely to be the best option. Fortunately, both policies are relatively easy to find, although you will need to compare providers […]

We caught up with Joy to get her top tips on finding your personal style as well to find out how she’s had to adapt her business during the global pandemic. What’s a typical working day like for you now during lockdown?  A typical day at Potential U HQ varies, no two days are the same as it’s dependent on client requirements. It usually starts with me checking my emails. My clients are dotted all over the world in different time zones, so I typically receive emails in the early hours of the morning when I’m asleep. Then I check my diary for Online Styling bookings for that day, which can range from an Online Shopping session to a virtual Wardrobe styling session. I prepare my client files for the day, so I’m ready to meet my clients virtually. What inspired your decision to pursue a career in personal styling?  I believe my admiration of my mother’s elegant style as a child, birthed my passion for fashion. Before I started Potential U Style and Image consultancy, I worked in finance for 13 years before taking a leap of faith into fashion. When styling my PA’s, colleagues and friends, I found that styling not only created amazing results fashion wise, but it made them feel super confident in […]

How To Avoid Loneliness & Depression When Working From Home

Working from home can be a lonely experience at the best of times, let alone during this current climate. While previously we could’ve taken a stroll to our local coffee shop or arranged a couple of social events to curb that niggling feeling of isolation. Now, well let’s just say in a world where Covid-19 is dictating our every move, things are very different right? But, there are still things we can do to ward off feelings of loneliness and generally just get ourselves in the right frame of mind to tackle the day. Get dressed every morning It goes without saying that getting dressed each morning and even putting on a bit of makeup gives a much-needed confidence boost. Working in your PJ’s while in bed may sound great, but after a while, it does affect your productivity and even worse your mood. Implement a morning routine Whether this involves meditation or writing in a gratitude journal, do something in the morning that’ll calm your mind and spirit. For us, meditation followed by a healthy smoothie never fails to get us feeling energised. Keep your desk tidy Do away with clutter, and tidy up your desk before or after every workday. Disinfecting your keyboard and other surfaces is particularly important during these times. Educate yourself and expand your skills You don’t need to go to college anymore to get an education. There are literally thousands of providers online, offering everything from accelerated nursing programs to courses in cosmetology. Educating yourself helps you focus on something other than your work and also gets you thinking positively about the future again, even when things seem a little gloomy. Take mini-breaks Sitting in front of your laptop all day is definitely a no, no. It’s incredibly important that you take scheduled breaks […]

Top 5 Destinations That Should Be On A Vegan Foodie’s Bucket List

As a vegan foodie, you’ll no doubt know all the best local spots to get some cruelty-free grub. But what about tasting delicious vegan delicacies across the globe? Here, Robbie Fowle from travel money experts H&T, shares his top five destinations that should be on your bucket list. The popularity of veganism is rising rapidly, with an estimated 600,000 vegans in the UK (The Vegan Society) and a massive 75,300,000 following the lifestyle globally (Vegan Bits). Whether you’ve recently joined the movement, or you’ve been eating cruelty-free for many years, you’re no doubt always on the lookout for great vegan dishes to try. While you might already know all of the best places to go locally, or even nationally, there are so many countries that you might not have even considered.  Luckily, I’m here to give you a roundup of the best five destinations to go to for delicious vegan food.  Bali, Indonesia If the stunning scenery in Bali hasn’t been enough to convince you to visit already, the food certainly will.  Renowned for its delicious native tropical fruits, including mango, papaya, and pineapples, you won’t be short of refreshing snacks to tuck into whether you’re lounging on the beach, or going island hopping.  Given the amount of fresh food they grow in Bali, you can expect to find plenty of vegan eateries around the island.  Seminyak and Ubud are just two of the great islands that Indonesia has to offer. With açaí and smoothie bowls, as well as vegan pancakes, wraps and cakes being offered at almost all casual eateries, vegans won’t struggle to eat like kings and queens.  I would recommend trying Gado Gado if you get the chance. Heralded as the most popular vegan food on any of the islands, this fragrant Indonesian salad is topped […]

Tips on Planning the Perfect Winter Weekend Getaway with the Girls

Is there anything better than getting your girlfriends together for a weekend away? Whether you’re all about wine country, the lake house, or the woods, spending a few nights together away from the hustle and bustle of life can help bring you closer than ever. In the winter, the weekend getaway should be all about slowing down and warming up, especially if you live in a cooler climate or are heading somewhere snowy. Here are some of our fave tips for making your winter girls’ weekend a total dream come true! The Location: Winter Wonderland Your weekend getaway venue should tick a few important boxes: It needs to be pretty, relaxing, and photogenic enough to serve as the backdrop for all your perfect Insta posts. You’ll also have to think about some logistics, like the number of bedrooms and the location, to knock it out of the park.   Meet in the middle. Unfortunately, there’s a good chance all your besties are spread out geographically, but you can simplify the travel process by picking a place that’s somewhere equidistant between the two farthest-away friends. Let everyone take a vote. Woods? Wine country? The beach? Everyone has their own opinion on how to spend a weekend away, so make sure each person has a say. Try to be democratic and take a vote so all attendees feel represented. Set a budget. Part of making sure everyone is happy and included involves setting a budget (and sticking to it). Try your best to choose a place that doesn’t cost so much it leaves somebody out. Ask everyone to weigh in on a budget before you start looking for a place so you’re not tempted to go over. Use a service that lets you split the tab. Did you know that, back in 2017, […]

The Spring/Summer 2020 Fashion Trends We’ll Be Wearing

Yes, we’ve had an onslaught of storms. Yes, the rainfall seems like it’s never-ending. And yes, it’s bitterly cold…BUT, we’ve spied some daffodils starting to bloom. Which is one of the best telltale signs that spring is on its way. And while Fashion Week is in full swing and providing us with inspiration for autumn/winter 2020, naturally we’re still in the process of planning our wardrobes for spring.  So what can we expect for the new season ahead? Well, we have the usual floral prints to contend with. Obvious, but worth mentioning anyway. And thanks to designers including Balmain, Maison Margiela, and Dries Van Noten, polka dots are going to be everywhere, along with feminine tailoring, embroidery designs, exaggerated collars, bucket hats, and crochet to name a few.  Now, while there are some trends we’ll be steering clear of because let’s face it, we’re not supermodels and can’t pull off everything. Sigh. There are certain trends that we wouldn’t forgive ourselves for not trying. Ahead, we highlight the spring trends we’ll be wearing along with must-have pieces to complete the look.  WAISTCOATS  You’d be forgiven if every time you pictured a waistcoat you immediately thought of Kate Moss circa mid-2000s, in her famous signature shorts and knee-high boots. And while designers such as Anthony Vaccarello did send models down the catwalk in gorgeous tiny waistcoats, thankfully other versions of the waistcoat included a more grown-up, looser style as seen specifically at Armani and Hermes.  We11done wool-blend blazer available at Net-A-Porter  Double-breasted gilet available at Mango NEON 80’s trends always make a comeback every season in some shape or form. This spring/summer it’s back in full force in the way of fluorescent hues.  Vibrant, attention-grabbing, and fun, whether it’s a flirty lime green dress as seen at Valentino or head-to-toe electric […]

9 Things You Should Know Before Travelling to Europe

Europe is known for its beautiful architecture, high-end fashion and an array of delicious cuisines. While these all hold true, there are many aspects of European travel that are less talked-about – until now. So if you’re dreaming of a European getaway, be sure to take note of these 9 things before you book your flight ticket!  You are entitled to compensation if your flight is delayed. Nobody welcomes a flight delay, unless, that is, you’re entitled to compensation! Delayed flights to and from Europe fall under EU legislation that states affected passengers must be compensated up to €600 for qualifying delayed flights. That’s about $660!  Unfortunately, not all circumstances apply, and it often depends on whether your airline is European or not. So if you’re flying with an airline like United Airlines and want to claim your flight delay compensation, it’s best to use a company like AirHelp to find out if you’re eligible. You don’t need a visa – most of the time. Americans traveling to Europe don’t need a visa for stays under 90 days, which is plenty of time for a fabulous vacation. However, if you are planning a trip for longer than three months, you’ll need to get a visa. Not all countries use the euro. There are about 13 countries in the European region that don’t use the Euro including Norway, Switzerland, Croatia, Denmark, and most eastern European countries. When traveling to these countries, you’ll have to exchange your euros for the local currency. You have to pay to use public restrooms. Always keep a few euros with you while traveling! You’ll be expected to pay up to €2 to use public restrooms, although most toilets in restaurants and hotel lobbies are free to use – as long as you’re a paying customer! The […]

Whether you’ve been there right at the front row or watched from your sofa at home, the UK’s music festivals of today offer a very different experience to those held in the 1960s and 70s.  They can certainly set you back more financially, though that didn’t stop nearly 200,000 Glastonbury 2019 tickets selling out in half an hour — at over £250 each.  With transport, food, drink and camping equipment on top of the ticket price, going to a festival can be an expensive business. Looking past the pennies, how else have UK music festivals changed over time?  Capacity   Do you know the feeling of fighting to find your friends in a packed crowd? Increased popularity means an increased number of punters. Glastonbury first drew a crowd of 1,500 and now pulls in closer to 200,000. That’s not to say crowds are at their biggest, however. The Isle of Wight festival was banned in the 1970s after a particularly bumper year, while a mammoth wall was installed at the Glastonbury site in 2002 to keep ticketless chancers from joining the party. Line-ups While many of the UK’s festivals are best known for rock’n’roll, line-up posters from the past decade reflect shifts in musical tastes as more pop and hip-hop acts find their way to the stage. One noteworthy example is Reading and Leeds Festival. The joint-town weekender’s artist announcements have divided opinions in recent years, with some praising the festival for reflecting society’s diversity and others criticising the organisers from moving away from the music that made them.  Sustainability With travel to and from the festival, along with eating, drinking and camping for up to a week, music festivals are bound to have a significant environmental impact. In recent years, however, […]

5 Ways To Roll Back The Years On Your Face And Body

Generally, you’re as young as you feel. There’s no law in saying that you can’t be 65-years-old and still chasing drinks and dreams, while dancing under the stars all night. However, a study has shown that 41% of women wished they looked younger, over 60% use anti-ageing products, and 20% worry about their age every day. Of course, when you’re in your late teens and mid-to-late-twenties, being asked for ID is a minor inconvenience, but, from here on, it becomes something of a compliment. Looking younger can help you to feel younger, so if you’re looking to dig out your dancing shoes, take note of our five tips to roll back the years on both your face, and body. Wear sun protection Wearing sunscreen is pivotal when it comes to minimising wrinkles, plus, as well as its appearance, it will also be good for the health of your skin. You might be chasing a tan but many of the visible signs of ageing such as age spots and wrinkles, stem from the progressive effect of ultraviolet rays on the skin. Wearing sunscreen will help to minimise that effect. And this does not just apply to when you’re sun-worshipping at the beach – many people can sustain UV damage on their face simply from driving. Those traffic jams in your summer commutes to work really can wreck havoc in more ways than one. In addition to wearing sunscreen, you can incorporate organic and mineral make up brands that offer sun protection to your beauty routine. Ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, for example, have properties that help shield the skin from the sun’s damaging effects.    Focus on your diet You’ve probably seen enough fad diets to last you a lifetime; fat was the devil in the 1980s, and now […]

Get the best men’s wedding attire with these top tips

The task of selecting the ideal wedding outfit can understandably feel like an overwhelming one. After all, this will probably be the most photographed moment of your life, so you won’t want to be wincing in embarrassment in the years to come whenever the family album comes out. But there are also many potential pitfalls when it comes to choosing male wedding attire, whether you are the groom or a guest. So, here’s some advice to ensure you make the right decisions. Establish whether there’s a dress code If it is you who is to tie the knot, it’s helpful to announce this to your guests as soon as possible. You should specify not only the type of outfit that is expected – such as black-tie or semi-formal – but also the specific environment in which the wedding will take place. The latter does make a difference to both your own and your guests’ sartorial choices for the big day, given that the most suitable dress code for a beach wedding can vary greatly from the best choice for a French chateau property in manicured grounds, such as our own Château Bouffémont. Start as early as possible on the selection of your wedding clothes One of the most critical tips for any man to follow when getting ‘suited and booted’ for a wedding is beginning preparations at least 90 days prior to the special day. Planning early will almost certainly lessen the stress that you feel about this important and tricky aspect of the wedding, but it also helps you to save money. If you come into the custom tailor shop just a few weeks before the wedding, you could easily end up spending more than necessary, including to correct any mistakes made in a rush purchase.   If in […]

Turkey’s Aegean Coast: A Historical Hotspot

Aside from hosting some of Turkey’s most stunning beaches, party towns and picturesque villages, the Aegean Coast boast countless historical and archeological sites, some of which are UNESCO accredited and listed as some of Turkey’s top holiday destination spots. A 20th Century Battlefield: The Gallipoli Peninsula Situated between the Aegean Sea and the Dardanelle Strait, the rolling hills of the Gallipoli Peninsula are home to memorials of the soldiers who lost their lives in the disastrous battle for Gallipoli in the year of 1915. The ANZAC forces first arrived on April 25th, to a small bay now known as Anzac Cove. A sunken warship can still be found below the sea, while inland you can visit the original World War I trenches and early 20th century battlefields. A Gallipoli Tour will take you to the three most significant monuments: Chunuk Bair, dedicated to New Zealand’s fallen troops; Lone Pine, which stands proud upon a hill top, among the sea of commemorative plaques are over 500 graves to unidentified Australian fighters; and the resting place of the brave forces of the Turkish 57th Regiment, who occupied the most dangerous position on the peninsular. Home of Troy: Canakkale On the opposite bank of the Dardanelle Strait is the vibrant city of Canakkale, just a short ferry ride from the Gallipoli Peninsular and connected to Istanbul and Izmir by bus. The city is known for the buzzing student nightlife, fantastic naval and archaeological museums and the central clock tower. Why Cape Verde Should Be Your Next Holiday Destination

Lying in the Atlantic Ocean around two hours south of the Canary Islands, Cape Verde is a small group of islands that can just about still be classified as off-the-radar. But all that looks set to change as celebrities flock to the islands as their hangouts. Stats from The Global Travel Search Index have shown a 3000% increase in people searching on Google for holidays in Cape Verde since 2004. And in 2017 Cape Verde was the second most searched for place by Britons, only after Barcelona. So what is making people look up these islands, and why is 2018 a good time to go? Why is Cape Verde rising in popularity? Situated in line with Senegal’s capital, Dakar, Cape Verde has a warm, tropical climate that’s very similar to its more well-known neighbours, the Canary Islands. Temperatures hover around 25 degrees Celsius all year round, but there are no tropical downpours here. In fact, the islands receive virtually no rain for nine months of the year, and only minimal showers for the remaining three months between August and October. This winter getaway spot has been compared to the Caribbean but is much closer, with a six-hour flight time. However, one of the big appeals is that you can spend any time of the year here exploring its volcanic landscape, luxuriating on the sandy beaches or going turtle and whale spotting. Why take a 2018 holiday to Cape Verde? 2018 is very much the time to take a holiday in Cape Verde. The Cape Verde Government has approved a number of plush new hotels across the islands and is investing in infrastructure. If you go in 2018 you can stay in a number of freshly-built hotels. In Sal’s Ponta Sino area alone both the family-friendly Sunwing resort and adult-only Sunprime […]

Nothing beats lying by a pool or the beach, sipping cocktails, and enjoying some rest and relaxation. However, if you’re like a lot of women, you may feel worried about going shopping for a new swimsuit to take with you on trips. Unless you’re in tip-top shape and have been getting yourself bikini-ready for months, you may find that shopping for a bathing suit brings all of your body worries to the surface. This can make you want to hide rather than strut your stuff while you’re on holiday. To counteract this feeling, it is important to understand how to locate swimwear that will not only feel comfortable when you wear it, but that also compliments your body shape. Read on for some tips you can follow today to help you find just the right piece(s) to make your summer days blissful. Those with thicker straps and double-stitched bands, plus underwire and other structure tend to be ideal. It also helps to opt for a bathing suit that comes in specific cup sizes, rather than a more generic size S, M, […]

8 Styles You Can Create with Your Flat Irons

When flat irons first started gaining popularity, they were used to straighten hair. However, over the years, as the quality of flat irons has improved, their popularity has risen and pro flat iron sets have become more widely available. Now, flat irons are used to easily create a huge range of hairstyles, from boho and beachy to glamorous and sexy. Here’s a look at eight styles you can create with your flat irons. Super Sleek Obviously, the first style to mention is straight. When it comes to creating super straight hair, nothing does it better than your flat irons. Very long, super sleek hair is on trend this season and flat irons can help you to copy this catwalk look in minutes. You’ll need your irons very hot, so make sure you use a heat protection spray or serum to protect your hair first. Added Volume To add a little extra volume to your roots, whether you are going for a straight, wavy, or curly style, simply pull your hair up to the ceiling and go straight up. Then, throw your head forward to brush from the underneath and finish with some volumising spray or sea salt spray. Beachy Waves Beachy waves are always popular in the summer and couldn’t be easier to create. Simply separate your hair into large vertical sections and starting at the front, angle your flat irons so they point to the ceiling. Then, wrap the strands around them, twisting as you move down the length of your hair. Glam Curls Tighter glamourous curls used to be difficult to recreate without an expensive blow dry and salon treatment. Now, you can do it with your flat irons. Start at your roots and twist your hair upwards towards the ceiling in small sections. Pin each curled up […]
