Lunchtime buy: Surface to Air Kurtis leather shorts

Leather is still a big trend for spring 2010 but it can be a difficult look to embrace during the warmer months. Celine kept the hemlines short with leather mini skirts in camel and teal while Chloe went for classic black with a pair of bum-skimming leather hotpants – a style that we loved on the catwalk, especially when teamed with that oversized khaki jacket (pictured below). Anyone else thinking Kate Moss and Glasto..? We found this slightly less revealing pair of leather shorts from Surface to Air, which are pleated to give a more feminine, loose fit. We’re not entirely convinced we can quite pull them off but we’re definitely willing to give it a go! We’ll be teaming with a simple, fitted white t-shirt to draw attention to the statement shorts. £300 from Urban Outfitters.

Lunchtime buy: Siwy Camilla Loveless shorts

Comfortable and practical, denim shorts are a wardrobe staple come the summer and it looks like we’re set to see more of them this season. D&G and Ralph Lauren were among those flaunting short hemlines in light-wash denim on the spring 2010 catwalks, while Hermes went for a darker option, teaming with a cape jacket and strappy sandals. We love the look of this casual, distressed pair from New York label, Siwy. A brand with quite the celebrity following (including the likes of Ashley Tisdale, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Nicole Ritchie), Siwy offers a range of fashion-forward denim designs that focus on high-quality detail and fit. Perfect for that just-chucked-on look, these ‘Camilla Loveless’ shorts not only look the part but also aim to flatter the figure; the padded motifs featured on both back pockets are said to lift and shape your behind. Bonus! £150 from Harvey Nichols.

Celebrating McQueen

A dark cloud was cast over the fashion world last Thursday, when news was brought of British designer, Lee Alexander McQueen’s death. New York Fashion Week began with a sombre tone as news rapidly spread, regarding the demise of the prolific fashion designer whose lower-priced line , McQ , was scheduled to be presented that very afternoon. Instead, friends, family and fans paid tribute to one of the most influential fashion figures of recent years, looking back at the many highlights of his successful career. Crowds descended upon Alexander McQueen stores to pay their respects with flowers, notes and candles while the London store lowered its McQueen flag to fly at half mast above the window display, which now shows only black drapes. Aged just 40 at the time of his death, McQueen was seen as one of the most exciting designers in the business, constantly shocking and impressing onlookers at his conceptual shows, showcasing inspired designs, tailored to perfection. Perhaps more significant to current and future designers however, is the fact that the ‘enfant terrible’ of British fashion grew with the trends , and not merely in terms of fashion. McQueen’s last , and perhaps best , show, which displayed his spring 2010 collection, streamed live from Paris, enabling anyone with internet access to watch from the comfort of their own home. McQueen was perfectly in tune to the possibilities of fashion and constantly pushed boundaries, making his mark in fashion history whilst setting the benchmark for Fashion Weeks to come. The British Fashion Council are yet to decide how to mark McQueen’s passing but Lucy Yeomans, chairman of the BFC press committee told the Guardian: ‘it is only right that London Fashion Week marks his passing in some way, pointing out that it was important ‘to do something […]

Lancôme makeup party

Oh Lancôme, how we love thee , not only for your pretty pampering products, but for inviting us back to Paris for your very first makeup party. That’s right, beauty’s best luxury label, Lancôme, invited us to Paris last week for its first ever makeup party and to catch an exclusive sneak peek at its S/S10 offerings, Ô My Rose!. This is Aaron De Mey’s second season with Lancôme, and we’d like to say here and now that his arrival at the French beauty brand has shot the label right back into fashion’s forefront. It’s not that there was ever any doubt over what an incredible institution Lancôme is, but De Mey’s move as new creative director has brought a youthful, cool edge to the ever-classic tradition that grounds the brand. Aaron’s understanding and approach to makeup is simple, but the results are anything but , which leads us on to chat about the new collection (oh, the new collection!). Ô My Rose! is Lancôme’s spring offering for 2010, which takes inspiration from the free-spirited sixties’ attitude and icons, mixing child-like innocence with a deep rebellion. Based on what De Mey describes as a ‘French Kate Moss’ , someone with an imperfect beauty , Ô My Rose! delivers a surprising colour palette for S/S10, skipping sickly-sweet candy colours and predictable pinks and opting for old-world corals, pop petrols and earthy camouflage greens. Whether you’re after a soft, summer glow, classic sophistication, or an all-out rebellious edge, this collection holds the power to enhance your every desire. We realise that’s a strong statement, but this is an even stronger collection. Aaron’s vision extends itself past the products to the packaging, too, from Lichtenstein inspired perforated compacts to geometric pop art-esque lines across the blusher, proving his attention to detail and passion […]

Photographer Irving Penn dies

Legendary fashion photographer Irving Penn died yesterday at the age of 92. His brother, film director Arthur Penn, delivered the news that the master of fashion photography died in his New York apartment, although the cause of his death has not yet been revealed. Beginning his career in 1943 by contributing to Vogue magazine, Penn was one of the first photographers to bridge the gap between commercial and art photography with his less-is-more aesthetic. With a startling sensuality, Penn photographed some of the most famous faces of our time, from a young Marilyn Monroe to icons of today including Kate Moss and Gisele , the results of which have become icons in themselves. “His approach was never obvious, Phyllis Posnick, who collaborated with Penn at Vogue, told the LA Times. “He would make us go further and dig deeper and look beyond the the obvious solution to a photograph to find something that was unique. He had great wit and you see some of that in his pictures. We’re sad to report the loss of a legend, but we’ll continue to enjoy Penn’s presence through the iconic legacy he leaves behind.

Interview with Shoe Designer of the Year Rupert Sanderson

As a fellow blogger, we at MFL were delighted that ELLE’s Accessory Designer of the Year Rupert Sanderson took time out of his hectic schedule to talk to us (between designing shoes for Karl Lagerfeld and blogging for Vogue no less). The London-based shoe designer and chairperson of Fashion Fringe Shoes 2008 has been crazy about footwear since his early teens and after studying shoe design at the world-renowned Cordwainers College, honed his skills working with Sergio Rossi and Bruno Magli in Italy. Rupert has since taken his brand on a journey and en route has gathered a dedicated following, enlisting celebrity disciples such as Kate Moss, not to mention two stores in London and a portfolio of high profile stockists around the world. Every style savvy girl knows to head straight to Rupert Sanderson for gorgeous shoes that blend traditional Italian craftsmanship with cool, individual style. And a fact you may not have known: To compliment his obsessive passion with the Italian craft of shoe-making, every pair of Rupert Sanderson shoes is named after a Daffodil. How very British… Who is the Rupert Sanderson woman? Confident and clever, she is someone who has the confidence to shop outside the usual brand because in her daily life she makes decisions based on her own independence of mind. A woman of some substance who relishes the sex appeal of a great shoe.

Beth can change your life

Beth Ditto has designed some “life changing” leggings. The Gossip singer, who has collaborated with UK fashion chain Evans on a collection for plus-sized women, has always found it almost impossible to find leggings that fit due to her curvy figure, and so was determined to rectify the problem. She explained: “I’m so proud of these! These are going to be life-changing. See if you’re fat the waistband should come up here, all the way up to under your breasts, so you feel secure and you get a smooth line. Not necessarily held in, but like nothing’s going to be weirdly squeezed out.” The 28 year old American was reportedly suggested for the Evans design job by her close friend supermodel Kate Moss.

The Men of Glastonbury 2009

Since Kate Moss donned her little hot-pants outfit to the UK’s favourite music event – Glastonbury – a few years ago, festival goers have treated the occasion like a bizarre, mud-filled catwalk – parading their finest (and often loudest) wardrobes to the masses. The best (or maybe worst) thing about this? There are no rules. But let’s not limit this to the girls. And having said that, to the festival crowd themselves. Performers after all, are under the scrutiny of the fields of fashionistas, fans and cameras, and the men are no exception. Here’s a few that we’ve picked out: Pete Doherty – Dressed in his faithful trilby hat, Pete chose a military/old band style top in a black and gold jersey material for his performance on The Other Stage. Thumbs up to Pete for the casual take on this formal theme. Although we’re not so sure about the navy blue polo shirt underneath, luckily Pete can pull off just about anything without it looking out of the ordinary.

However, beware of wearing them with high heels – flat gladiator sandals look best – and always cover up your chest to avoid flashing too much skin. Shorts have always been seen as quite casual but teamed with a blazer or cardigan, they look smart and can even be worn to the office provided they are well tailored and not too short.

Justin Timberlake wants to take his clothing line global

The ‘Sexy Back’ singer – who launched his William Rast denim label in October 2006 – is so pleased with the success of his brand he wants to open stores in as many countries as possible. A source told America’s National Enquirer magazine: ‘It’s doing so well that he’s planning to open up boutiques around the world. It’s worth tens of millions of dollars. He could sell it and retire.’ The 28-year-old star recently topped GQ magazine’s list of the 10 Most Stylish Men in America for his impact on fashion and his ‘knack for targeting trends’. Justin topped the list because of his willingness to take style risks with his use of hats, three-piece suits, skinny ties and facial hair. Despite being voted the Most Stylish Man in America, Justin believes British supermodel Kate Moss is the ultimate fashion icon because she ‘could put a barrel on and it would be some sort of statement’.
