Met Ball 2011: best dressed

We’ve just about recovered from the excitement of the Royal wedding with its vast array of stylish guests and, of course, Kate Middleton’s breathtakingly beautiful McQueen gown – but the weekend hit us with more star-studded events as the Met Costume Institute Gala landed in New York last night. The Met Ball brings the best of the fashion, film and music industry together for a night of fabulous fashion and exhibitions, and this year’s gala was hosted by none other than Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who honoured the late Alexander McQueen with an exhibition called Savage Beauty. Naturally, the prestigious event is harder to get into than Wonka’s chocolate factory, so we’ve cast our sartorial eye over the fashion elite who bagged a Golden Ticket and strutted their stylish stuff on the red carpet. Here’s our top 10 best dressed from last night’s Met Ball…   Ashley Green She may play a vampire in Twilight, but Ashley Green managed to look positively angelic in a custom Donna Karen strapless gown. The nude voluminous tulle was adorned with silver sequins that trailed into a wedding-like train. Teamed with a sleek up-do and touches of sparkle in her ears, clutch and cuff, she looked positively radiant. Jessica Alba Always one to look utterly fabulous on the red carpet, Jessica Alba didn’t disappoint at last night’s Met Ball dressed in a custom Ralph Lauren platinum strapless bustier gown covered in a sparkly crystal-encrusted overlay that highlighted her growing baby bump. Blake Lively Being the face of Chanel has been a dream come true for this Gossip Girl starlet, and last night she was joined by Mr Karl Lagerfield himself. Naturally, Blake opted for Chanel couture by means of a nude embellished dress covered by silver-lilac a chiffon sash to flaunt her fabulous figure too much. Beyoncé […]

London Fashion Week AW11: Unique

Who: Topshop Unique What: Dalmation spots, polka dots and a Thirties Cruella De Ville. Thoughts: It’s cool to be cruel – or Cruella, more specifically – according to Unique next season. With dalmation spots and dog barks, the British brand’s autumn/winter 2011 collection takes inspiration from 1930’s America, where elegance is exuberant, refined but ultra-modern, too. Surprisingly – and unlike previous seasons – its also incredibly wearable. Prints are big and bold – especially dog prints seen on clutches and clasps of belts or automobiles on shoes – and structure adds an architectural feel reminiscent of the Art Deco era, whether in stiff and twisted dresses, refined tailoring or sky-scraper prints on blouses. Fur forms a sumptuous strong point, seen on oversized monochrome coats, hems of dresses and oversized collars for De Ville-like depth and impact. Dresses for the most part fall mid-length and flowing – save for a structured sweetheart mini covered in jet black glitter – and trousers come loosely tailored or slouchy and pyjama-like. But among the decadence, Unique’s collection has room for softness too, with pretty-printed sheer chiffon blouses, crushed velvet, lurex and hints of tobacco. Elegant it is, but it’s also laced with fun – models’ hair is shaped into Minnie Mouse style ears and some wear black-tipped noses. Especially strong in a finale where all models storm the runway at once, Unique’s collection for autumn/winter 2011 is among our favourites to date from the label – ask Anna Wintour, sitting front row – helped by Katie Grand’s spot-on styling.

Editor’s diary: what I’m wearing day 3

Wow, what a busy few days it’s been. Apologies for the lack of sartorial snaps, day 2 was particularly busy with the likes of Georgia Hardinge, Jaeger, John Rocha and Bryce Aime to juggle in the rain, so no time to take a picture of what I was wearing unfortunately (a blush organza applique dress, cropped biker jacket and my Preen Edition trench, if you must know). But here’s what I wore yesterday (day three) before the Mulberry party – a silk rust shirt dress layered over a vintage denim shirt, Office cork heels and my new must-wear velvet fox mask, courtesy of Mulberry, naturally. Today I’m particularly casual – too many hours spent in 4-inch heels yesterday has caused quite the foot ache – but will update you on what I’m wearing tomorrow when I’m off to meet Anna Wintour for a press briefing on the Met’s upcoming McQueen exhibition. Yep, you read that right. I’ll be back to fill you in tomorrow. In the meantime, stay tuned for all the gossip from last night’s Mulberry party…

Blake Lively in Chanel

She’d been spotted several times last week at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, from having dinner with Karl Lagerfeld to sitting next to Vogue Editor Anna Wintour, but actress Blake Lively made her biggest impression when making her claim for the red carpet at the premier for her new film The Town at Saturday night’s Toronto International film festival. The 23-year-old Gossip Girl star was spotted painting the town red in a scarlet sequin Chanel couture dress, which clung to her in all the right places – and the roses attached to her lower hips gave her an even sexier hourglass figure. Flaunting her endless legs, Blake kept everything matching from the red courts to her lipstick to even the ring on her finger, but although she dazzled us with her sexy image we can’t help but think that maybe this matching look could of been broken up with a bit of black.

Fashion’s Night Out: Dolce & Gabbana and Naomi Campbell

These days it seems like most every model peaks at the age of 16, but then again, Naomi Campbell isn’t most models. The iconic super has been in the industry for a quarter century and shows no signs of slowing down – in fact Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour was just yesterday quoted in the New York Post as saying that she is “a joy to work with.” And when the 40-year-old stunner outshone Gisele, Karlie, Karolina and countless others closing the FNO show at Lincoln Center in an Oscar de la Renta gown on September 7th, she made it no secret that everywhere Naomi goes a large crowd follows. In light of the British model’s unparalleled career and timed to Fashion’s Night Out in New York, Dolce & Gabbana celebrated the 25th anniversary of Naomi Campbell’s reign in fashion with a 14-model fashion dance at their Madison Avenue boutique last week. It may have only lasted a few minutes, but Naomi and the 14 female models decked out in Dolce & Gabbana Naomi tees caused quite a commotion as they danced their way around the store and onto the street – famed choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson had arranged the moves and DJ Lindsey provided the beats to the lively affair (complete with an open champagne bar). To seal the memorable anniversary with something tangible, the shirts worn by the 14 models were sold for $200 a pop at the event, where Naomi stayed on in the boutique to sign them. Designed by Dolce & Gabbana the limited edition collector T-shirts come in 14 iterations, each with an iconic image of Naomi Campbell taken by some of the world’s most esteemed contemporary fashion photographers (Patrick Demarchelier, Steven Klein, Bruce Weber and Mario Testino, among others). We didn’t see all that many […]

Leighton Meester in Versus

It’s one of the most highly anticipated fashion events of the season, and Tuesday night at Fashion’s Night Out in New York it was Gossip Girl Leighton Meester who made quite the statement. The actress chose to go for the daring approach in a cutaway electric blue Versus corset dress (courtesy of Christopher Kane, no less), and pairing it with Christian Louboutin shoe-boots, Leighton’s look oozed cool attitude. But what with the creme de la creme attending the show at Fashion’s Night Out, including Vogue editrix Anna Wintour, we can’t help but feel that Leighton’s racy approach didn’t quite pay off next to the more elegant of outfits.

London Fashion Week SS10: Jaeger London

This show had a very starry front row. Not only was Peaches Geldof, Jade Parfitt, Erin O’Connor and Tamsin Egerton there but David Walliams also put in an appearance. However it wasn’t any of these who caused the catwalk to fall into mass excitement, but instead it was the presence of fashion royalty. Yes Anna Wintour was there looking as polished as ever. But back to the clothes. This was a very seventies inspired collection, and was both wearable and stylish. The colour scheme was fabulous, I adored the postbox red and the mushroom shades, it was a collection very much for the city slicker. There were some great pieces, the playsuits were real winners and the pleated chiffon trousers were stunning. The harems felt a little out of place, I feel that we’ve moved on from this trouser shape. There was a glammed up utility feel with sequins featuring heavily, alongside metallic fabrics and bold monochrome. Culotte style shorts were paired with billowing blouses, long line blazers added a new dimension to the wardrobe staple and the knitted body which shouldn’t work really did. Some great key pieces could be found here, and the pictures don’t really do the collection justice. For this collection is about quality both in terms of textures and fabrics. The handbags are sure to be gracing the arms of the A list. Jaeger London does do some beautiful pieces, and some are very stylish and at times quirky pieces. It’s one of those collections that there’s something for everyone. So next Spring Summer will you be skipping a seventies inspired step?

Yes, Shulman has spoken out against the ‘jutting bones and no breasts or hips look’ that designers have been increasingly pushing down the catwalks since the advent of the waif in the 90s. In a letter to a variety of fashion designers and houses – including Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Prada, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and Balenciaga – Shulman said that Vogue was being supplied with minuscule sample garments which forced them to hire tiny models which the magazine then had to airbrush to look larger and appeal to readers.

Azzedine Alaia speaks out

Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour and Linda Evangelista then didn’t turn up in protest. Alaia has been quite vocal about his anger. Curator of the exhibition Harold Koda has claimed that Alaia wasn’t informed or invited to the Ball. Koda explained to WWD that they pretty much wanted Alaia from the beginning. And that a mutual friend asked Alaia if he felt comfortable to see his work displayed. Alaia reportedly said he wasn’t and so they chose not to pursue the matter further. Koda further added: “We would have loved to have had his pieces in the show, but there was a lot of miscommunication, my understanding was that he didn’t want his work in the show, so I honored it.

But in a weird turn, in fact a diva moment, Alaia has chosen to blame Anna Wintour. He feels Anna Wintour has snubbed his work and this has influenced Koda’s decision: “She behaves like a dictator and everyone is terrified of her…but I’m not scared of her or anyone said Alaia. Honestly, they are one step away from name-calling….
