MTV Movie Awards 2014: The best dressed!

Music and movie stars alike gathered in the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles last night, ready to take in the 2014 MTV Movie Awards action! The red carpet was a real mixed bag in terms of choice of outfits, as it was filled with both fun and fashionable pieces making for real versatility. Rihanna went sexy in a white Ulyana Sergeenko Couture number with a dangerously thigh high split (and she wasn’t afraid to show the crowd, either!) as did Rita Ora, who went the other way and wore a black Barbara Casasola dress with a provocative, plunging front. Going cute but high fashion were Lupita Nyong’o and Victoria Justice, who looked gorgeous in their respective Chanel and Atelier Versace dresses, while Nicki Minaj kept things surprisingly minimal and effortless in a black Alexander McQueen dress. Here’s who made our best-dressed list – don’t forget to let us know who your favourite is in the comments below! Rihanna in Ulyana Sergeenko Couture Jessica Alba in Kenzo and Piece D’anarchive Iggy Azalea in John Galliano Lupita Nyong’o in Chanel Rita Ora in Barbara Casasola Victoria Justice in Atelier Versace Ellie Goulding in Giorgio Armani Nicki Minaj in Alexander McQueen Shailene Woodley in Balmain Holland Roden in Salvatore Ferragamo Zendaya Coleman In Emanuel Ungaro Bella Thorne in Versace Debby Ryan in Rachel Zoe

Paloma Faith signs to Next Model Management!

Watch out Cara Delevingne, Paloma Faith could very well be out for your job! Ok, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but Paloma Faith has just signed to Next Model Management, one of the biggest modelling agencies in the world, and we’re pretty excited about what projects are in the pipeline for the singer. “Paloma is a British fashionista with remarkable creative talent; we adore her musically and stylistically,” said Faith Kates, the founder and owner of Next Model Management. Paloma now joins the likes of singers Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey as well as hot models Suki Waterhouse and Arizona Muse, so it looks like she’s in excellent company. We can’t wait to see what her first modelling job is; having performed at the Burberry Prorsum autumn/winter 2014 show earlier this year, we’re crossing our fingers that the quintessential British brand just might have snapped her up for a future campaign. What say you? [WWD]

Miley Cyrus wears Marc Jacobs for Elle US May cover

Less than a year after her last cover (it was in June 2013, FYI) Miley Cyrus is back for Elle US, and is posing up a storm on the magazine’s May cover! Miley is wearing a stunning tunic and matching flared trouser combo from her good pal Marc Jacobs’ autumn/winter 2014 collection, and is looking more fresh-faced, conservative and youthful than we have seen in months. Could this new Miley be here to stay? We can’t be sure, but we can at least enjoy her new image in the Elle US May issue. Love her or hate her, there’s no denying that Miley has made quite an impact on the music industry in the past 12 months alone, so we’re not at all surprised to find her on the magazine’s music issue. We can’t wait to dive into the editorial and see her accompanying interview. Will the conservative pictures last in the rest of the editorial pictures? We guess we’ll just have to buy the mag to find out!

First look at Pharrell Williams’ Uniqlo collection

Another day, another triumph for fashion’s busiest musician. Pharrell Williams has teamed up with Uniqlo for a pretty cool collection under the name “i am OTHER” – and even Pharrell himself can’t believe how awesome the pieces are… “When I first tried some of the things we produced on, I couldn’t stop myself from showing it on,” he said. “ I was like, ‘Wow, this is going to be revolutionary.’ It’s so soft – gentle to the touch – and I just could not believe the price it’s going for.” The collection comprises of T-shirts for both men and women which come in a staggering 14 different colours and patterns, as well as seven baseball caps featuring slogans such as “Think Other” and “THE SAME IS LAME”. We think he’s done a pretty good job of modelling them, and we predict a lot of cool celebs will be spotted out and about in the pieces soon enough. The Pharrell Williams for Uniqlo collection is out on April 24th. [Vogue]

Gisele slips into her white bikini for new H&M ads, sings Blondie

Gorgeous Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen is back for H&M, showcasing her flawless and enviable bronzed body in some new-season pieces of swimwear. The new H&M ad campaigns were shot in Costa Rica (jealous,  much?) and have a serious nod to bohemian seventies glamour! As well as showing off her incredible body and H&M’s finest new pieces, Gisele also treats us to her very own rendition of Blondie’s Heart of Glass, produced by the very talented French music producer and DJ Bob Sinclar. “I never in a million years thought that I would record a song and to work with a producer like Bob,” Gisele said. We know that Gisele has a pretty sweet voice too, thanks to her rendition of the popular Kinks song All Day and All of the Night which she recorded last year. The song will be available to download from May, with all of the proceeds going to UNICEF to help vulnerable children. The print and outdoor campaign will also break in May; we can’t wait! [WWD]

Nicole Kidman is almost unrecognisable in new Jimmy Choo ads

Nicole Kidman, is that you? The leggy blonde actress looks almost unrecognisable in the brand new Jimmy Choo pre-fall 2014 ad campaign – if it wasn’t for her long stems we think we would have had some trouble identifying her! Nicole looks fresh-faced and somewhat dishevelled (a million miles away from the expertly put together actress we are used to seeing), not to mention about 20 years younger in the pic above. Still, the ad features Nicole and Jimmy Choos so we can’t help but love it. Maybe this was all part of photographer Willy Vanderperre’s vision… “I really enjoyed working with Willy, he gave me such great direction, it was like being on a film set,” Nicole said of the shoot. “It was fun to embrace a more rebellious spirit for Jimmy Choo; we listened to a lot of great rock music to get in the mood for the shoot.” And having seen the accompanying video below, we can’t help but agree with her.

Treat him to a denim jacket….

….here’s some handy advice before you make that purchase. As fashion items go, denim jackets have had something of an unfair representation, which has led to them being avoided by gents who are unsure of how to wear them. Lots of people are put off the idea of investing in a denim jacket by the notion that it’s a crime against fashion to sport double denim. And while that may be true to a certain extent, we feel that this alone shouldn’t stop anyone from sporting one! Of course, the most obvious way to avoid committing a fashion faux pas is to avoid double denim altogether. If your man is deathly afraid of experimenting with this look, advice him to stick to wearing chinos or cords when wearing a denim up top. Take a look at this handy video from MensFashionMagazine.co.uk, which gives some great inspiration as to what to wear with a denim jacket. However, wearing double denim isn’t necessarily a fashion no go; although there are certain rules that should be applied. 1. Sporting jeans and a jacket in the same tone of denim is best avoided. If you need a refresh on what this looks like, cast your mind back to the 2001 American Music Awards. Justin Timberlake may be something of a fashion icon these days, but we’ll never forget the night he stepped onto the red carpet in a double denim ensemble, complete with cowboy Stetson. Relive the horror and check it out at MTV.com. 2. Double denim looks fabulous when you employ contrasting tones. Dark denim works best on the upper body, so it’s always a good idea to favour this shade for the jacket. Take a look at this G-star jacket, part of the full range of denim jackets available online from Diffusion […]

5 of the biggest celebrity art collectors

When you’re rich (and famous) what better to invest your hard earned money in other than art? Yes buying art that we can only dream about is a luxury that comes with the celebrity lifestyle. And while the celeb industry boasts quite a number of art connoisseur’s we’ve managed to narrow down the list to our favourite five. JayZ: With a rumoured art collection worth $30m, JayZ’s love affair with the art world has been a long term one in which the rapper has firmly established himself as a major collector. His latest purchase? A $4.5m painting by one of his favourite artists – Basquiat. Steven Spielberg: As passionate about film making as he is about art, Spielberg credits the artist Norman Rockwell as a major influence in his work. Naturally he has a staggering collection of Rockwell pieces and along with fellow film maker and friend George Lucas, Spielberg exhibited his Rockwell collection at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie: While both Brad and Angelina are frequent visitors of art fairs, it’s said that Mr Pitt is more of the collector amongst the pair. Artist Neo Ranch as well as pieces from Bambi and Banksy can be found in this super couples collection. David Bowie: Fully immersed in the art world, Bowie attended art school and credits art as being a “stable nourishment” in his life. The rocker started collecting art from an early age and he runs his own online art gallery. Bowie’s collection consists of pieces from Tintoretto and Ruben, as well as contemporary artists such as Frank Auerbach and Graham Sutherland. Steve Martin: A self confessed lover of modern art, collecting art is Martin’s “biggest hobby“. In 2001 the comedian opened up his collection to the general public at the Bellagio Gallery […]

The Three D’s To That Perfect Bikini Body

If we’ve got our dates right, then we’ve all got about five months to get our bikini bodies whipped into shape. The weeks following the festive period are always a struggle, and it’s difficult to imagine ever feeling fabulous on the sandy beaches when you’re feeling frumpy and a bit a blue. That said, start to make some changes now and you’ll see a big difference when it’s time to don that bikini and strut your stuff in the sun. We’ve put together some simple tips, designed to help you achieve the body you want, without the danger of crash diets and exhausting exercise regimes. Take a look at our three D’s below; Diet We’re sure we’re not the only one who can admit that they’ve tried (and failed) their fair share of crazy fad diets. Cabbage soup, maple syrup – even baby food – we’ve tried them all! These sorts of eating plans might have fast results, but their ability to put your body into starvation mode means that when you start eating again, your body immediately stores it as fat, as it doesn’t know whether it’s going to be starved again. Take a look at this example from the Daily Mail, created by nutritionist Yinka Thomas, which claims to give you a perfect beach body in just three weeks. Starting your preparations early means that you can give yourself extra time to achieve the goals you want; instead of dramatically altering your diet (the surest way to fall of the bandwagon), why not use this as your inspiration for a new healthy eating regime? Detox When you hear the words ‘maple syrup’, don’t balk in fear that we’re suggesting you embark on the maple syrup diet! This might be a quick way to lose weight (it stands to […]

Panic over – Lily Allen has found her Chanel wedding dress!

Call off the search – Lily Allen’s wedding dress has been found! The blogosphere has been in a frenzy over the past 24 hours as it came to everyone’s attention that Lily Allen’s custom made Chanel Haute Couture wedding dress which she wore to her reception had gone missing. The singer admitted that it had disappeared in an interview with Miquita Oliver on 4Music’s Rock the Look after being asked what the most expensive item in her wardrobe was… “There’s two bits to that answer. One is that it’s not in my wardrobe, it’s gone missing,” Lily admitted.  “And two, it’s my Chanel Couture wedding dress that’s worth about £200,000. It’s gone. I don’t know where it is.” We broke out in a bit of a sweat when we heard that such a fine piece of Karl Lagerfeld craftsmanship was lost, but Lily took to Twitter last night to assure her fans and fashionistas alike that it had been found. “OK, EVERYONE RELAX, I FOUND IT !!!!!!!!! A couple of weeks ago now,” she tweeted. Phew! We can sleep easy! [Image]

Pharrell and Comme des Garcons are collaborating on a fragrance!

Pharrell Williams has made quite a name for himself in the fashion biz – these past few months in particular thanks to his penchant for larger than life headgear – so it comes as no surprise to learn that he is working on his very own perfume! The musician will be teaming up with Japanese label Comme des Garcons for a unisex fragrance entitled Girl, to coincide with the release of his new album of the same name. “This is the first time we have created a fragrance for a musician and I can think of no greater talent and no greater gentleman to have done this with,” said Adrian Joffe, CEO of Comme des Garcons Parfums. “Pharrell knew exactly what he wanted the perfume to smell like right from the beginning. “It has been an honour to work with such a creative artist with a great vision, which for Comme des Garcons is the most important thing.” The scent is slated for release in September this year, although no other details are currently known. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we have more info. Are you excited about this new collaboration?

First look at Nicole Scherzinger’s debut Missguided collection

We don’t think Nicole Scherzinger will be too disappointed with Cheryl Cole’s return to the X Factor, as she has plenty of other projects to keep her busy. As well as a hot new music career to think about, Scherzy has launched her debut collection with Missguided which we told you about a few months ago – and we have the first look at some of the pieces right here! “It’s inspired by the catwalk mixed with my personal style,” Nicole said. “I would describe it as clean, sexy, strong and graphic but also classy and feminine; it’s urban chic. “I love the dresses and the racer back tees, you can dress them up or down depending on the occasion. I am also a huge fan of the fishnet pieces, I designed them to look edgy but still be classy. It’s all what I wear myself, I love to funk it up but still keep it clean.” We think her description of the Missguided pieces are absolutely spot on; the 30-piece collection definitely comprises of fun pieces that are perfect for wearing for a night out on the town. Plus, Nicole does a fine job of modelling them! Can we all look as good as Nicole in the pieces? Gosh, we hope so! [Daily Mail]

Design matters!

Design is part of everyday life, whether it’s in household objects, apparel, public transport or communications. Fashion Clothing Design There is never any shortage of candidates to become fashion clothing designers. Some may have spent three or four years at art school learning a craft, while others move into the business as part of a career change from any number of professions, such as teaching, merchant banking or music. Irrespective of anyone’s path into fashion clothing design, ideas are nurtured by expertise and hard work. A designer must have lots of artistic talent but this has to be built upon. Designers must continuously expand their horizons, forge skills and experiment with new ideas. They must understand: • How to define a particular design concept first by sketching out an idea for a garment and developing it. • Learning how textiles are manufactured and how the finished fabrics work as loose pieces of cloth as well as the components of a garment. This enables a designer to select the best fabrics to suit new ideas. • Sewing and tailoring skills. The best way to develop these skills is to start on the bottom rung of a fashion house or a tailoring firm, or preferably both on different occasions, and learn to sew and cut in a systematic manner. • How to build a reputation. Designers without a rich patron can always start by making garments for friends and family and expand their clientele by word of mouth. Aircraft Design When pilots call an aircraft a ‘bus’, they are not really joking. Another way of describing an aircraft is to call it a dust cover. Aircraft are just structures that transport people, goods and weapons between two points. Aircraft design is essentially the design of that structure. Any structure intended to fly […]

Paris Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Gareth Pugh, H&M, Vionnet & more

Day 2 of Paris Fashion Week brought us some versatile sartorial new-season delights from some of the fashion big guns such as Gareth Pugh, H&M, Alexis Mabille, Vionnet and Dries van Noten, among others. GARETH PUGH AW14  We think Gareth Pugh gets the award for most talked-about and most theatrical show, as he sent some of his models down the runway with wind-up keys on their backs making them look like a cross between wall-clocks and wind-up dolls. If they weren’t walking around with heavy machinery on their backs, they had very tall – and probably very hard to maneuver in – hats on their heads. Although there were many distractions on the Gareth Pugh autumn/winter 2014 runway, we did manage to pay attention to the clothes too, and discovered that the collection went in yet another different direction to the one we saw last season; yet it was pretty similar in that signature Gareth Pugh only-something-Lady-Gaga-would-wear aesthetic. Reflective, shiny materials juxtaposed with an abundance of plastic and over-the-top fluffy fur, exaggerated silhouettes and so much more. H&M AW14  Paris Fashion Week isn’t just about the big designers, as H&M came out to play by presenting its autumn/winter 2014 collection to a star-studded front row (Miranda Kerr, – the new face of the brand –Jessica Alba and Beyonce’s little sis, Solange Knowles, were all in attendance) at the Grand Palais, otherwise known as the home of the highly anticipated Chanel shows. We saw one of the most wearable and covetable collections hit the runway, with everything from sparkly sequin sweater dresses to comfy cosy cashmere rollneck jumpers all making an appearance. The colour palette was bright and bold to make up for the extreme wintry pieces (the bright orange turtle neck jumper is an MFL fave!), and we predict everyone […]

Lily Allen bursts onto NME Awards red carpet in Roksanda Ilincic

What big award show is nicely nestled between the BRITs and the Oscars? Why, that would be the NME Awards which took place at the Brixton Academy in London last night. Lily Allen pretty much stole the show on the red carpet last night, opting to go bright and bold in a cute Roksanda Ilincic flare dress from the designer’s spring/summer 2014 collection. Lily has been on board the colour train recently, choosing an equally colourful ensemble for the BRITs, and we have to say that we are loving it. The white Christian Louboutin pumps, multicoloured nails and quirky up-do topped her look off perfectly. We’re kind of glad Lily Allen went back on her word to never return to the music industry… we wouldn’t have seen her rock this Roksanda Ilincic dress while accepting her Best Solo Artist award, otherwise. Welcome back, Lills!

Katy Perry’s jewellery collection with Claire’s!

Katy Perry may have been draped in hot-off-the-runway Julien Macdonald sequins for the Brits last week, but the girl does have an eye for a bargain too. Why else would she be teaming up with Claire’s to give her fans an affordable and accessible jewellery collection? “When we survey our girls around the world, she’s the superstar that resonates globally,” said Claire’s CEO Jim Fielding. “Katy is designing a line of jewellery and accessories that she wanted to make for her fans. The overlap between her fans and the Claire’s customer is a great overlap. “Katy is a very smart businesswoman and a great performer. She knows her brand very well. She has a definite aesthetic and point of view.” Katy has signed on with Claire’s for two years for the rather aptly named Katy Perry Prism collection, which will be designed and curated by the gorgeous singer herself. We can reportedly expect everything from seasonal pieces, items inspired by KP’s music – whatever that means – and even a few limited edition bits and bobs too. We have every faith that the collection will be a “roaring” success. Geddit? [Coco Perez]

The Brit Awards 2014: The best dressed!

Last night some of the biggest names in the music industry walked the red carpet at London’s O2 for the 2014 Brit Awards, looking absolutely head-turningly fabulous in the process. Beyonce didn’t actually walk the main red carpet, but she stole the show for us sartorially and vocally. As the surprise performer of the night, Bey wowed the crowd with her performance of XO, and also made jaws drop thanks to her shimmering, figure-hugging Vrettos Vrettakos gown. She looked like a modern day mermaid! Katy Perry proved that we don’t need to wait for the Oscars to see new-season sparkly dresses hit the red carpet, as she stepped out in a glittering Julien Macdonald dress hot off the autumn/winter 2014 catwalk while presenting an award on stage. Rita Ora added some much needed colour to the red carpet by way of an attention-grabbing yellow Prada dress – gorgeous doesn’t even cut it – and Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Iggy Azalea went bold and sexy in the classic wowsome colour, red! Take a look at our best-dressed below and let us know who gets your ultimate vote! Atlanta de Cadenet vs. Allison Williams…Who wore Valentino better?

Another week, another dress double-up. And don’t we just love to weigh in on a one dress, two girls kinda situation! This week, making us look twice (and hard) is DJ and model, Atlanta De Cadenet, and Girls star Allison Williams (yes, Marnie). Both ladies slipped into a stunning Valentino autumn/winter 2013 dress and, it’s safe to say, we were equally bowled over. Giving the thigh-grazing white number its first outing was Allison, who took to the red carpet at the 2013 MTV Music Awards looking resplendent. Pairing the embellished lace dress with simple black Louboutin pumps, enviable pins, strong eyes and a softly sweeping up-do, that beaming smile sealed the deal. But then, chasing Allison to the winning post was Atlanta de Cadenet, who sat pretty front row at the Valentino spring/summer 2014 show in Paris wearing the same dress. The super-hip daughter of Amanda de Cadenet gave us a punch of colour to go with the angelic white dress in the form of a crimson lip and killer red, strappy Valentino pumps. A glowing complexion, loosely tied back hair and box clutch completed the look. But, who wins in the style stakes this week? We’re going to ditch the prim and proper approach with a Valentino dress and go with Atlanta on this one. One thing a white dress desperately needs is a dash of eye-opening colour, and that Atlanta certainly did well. Although she looks great, Allison’s look just came off a little too vanilla for our liking. What are you thoughts? Whose look wins for you? [Images: Zimbio]

WATCH: London Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Burberry, David Koma, Michael van der Ham & more

No rest for the wicked – or stylish – Day 4 of London Fashion Week was just as jam-packed and exciting as ever; and we were there to take in all the action! Where else would we be on a day when Burberry, David Koma, Michael van der Ham, Tom Ford and Roksanda Ilincic are showcasing their autumn/winter 2014 collections, eh? Burberry AW14 One of the highlights of the day – and the five day event as a whole – was the Burberry Prorsum autumn/winter 2014 show. Luckily it was a dry affair (not that a little or a lot of rain would have stopped us) and the front row was as star-studded as ever. Bradley Cooper, Harry Styles, Sky Ferreira, Anna Wintour and more celebs graced the front row to view the collection first hand – and we think they would have been pretty chuffed with what they saw. If there was one thing we took away from the show, It was that we need to go scarf shopping asap. Scarves as you know them will no longer suffice, as it’s all about the oversized ones that can double up as a blanket. Or you could just buy a blanket with your initials on, as they too made it down the Burberry runway in the epic finale. Burberry definitely didn’t do things by halves in the music department either, as we were treated to a stellar performance by the one and only Paloma Faith. Pipe envy! Overall, Burberry presented a soft, casual, comfortable and warm collection which Christopher Bailey said was inspired by the Charleston Farmhouse in Sussex of the Bloomsbury Group. And if you head to the brand’s official website right now you can preorder the collection and ensure that you’re one of the first people to own […]

London Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Bora Aksu, Felder Felder, DAKS & more

New York Fashion Week got us officially geared up for the autumn/winter 2014 trends, so we weren’t going to let a little (ok a big, inconvenient and suede-shoe-destroying but we’re fine, we’re over it) thing like rain stop us from flocking to Somerset House along with the equally drenched fash-pack to see what the first day of London Fashion Week had to offer. Felder Felder, DAKS, Eudon Choi, Bora Aksu and J JS Lee all showcased their new season creations to the fashionable London crowds, and didn’t seem phased by the pressure to make sure their collections matched the standard of those in the Big Apple. Tommy Hilfiger inspired us to go on a snowy, winter hike, and Jackie Lee has inspired us to go camping thanks to the new autumn/winter 2014  pieces we saw early this morning. There was an abundance of houndstooth and check print that adorned the casual, cool, practical but on-trend pieces,  and the colour palette was kept understated. A far cry from her feminine, all-pink collection from last season, but isn’t versatility and the ability to create the shock factor what a good fashion designer is? We rest our case; well done J JS Lee! Eudon Choi got us all into the party spirit/gave us that Friday feeling thanks to the Rolling Stones soundtrack. Sex and drugs are optional, but rock and roll was essential! Legendary music choices aside, we saw lots of tartan on the catwalk (we told you, didn’t we?) although it came in a colder, bluer hue than the traditional red one we’re used to. The collection as a whole was a refined take on 60s fashion – and that’s something we got from the cigarette trousers, flared cuffs and print-tastic knitwear pieces as well as the aforementioned soundtrack. Oh, and you […]

5 fun things to do in London this Valentines Day

You thought Paris was the most romantic city in the world, but London isn’t too bad for the ole romance, either. Believe it or not, hustle and bustle, angry commuters and horrific weather aside, there are far worse places to be than our fine Capital on Friday February 14th, and to prove it to you we’ve come up with five fab ways to spend Valentine’s Day in the city. 1. Lady Mary and her Downton Abbey pals have made afternoon tea seem like a simply spiffing way to spend a day, so why should Valentine’s Day be any different? Afternoon tea at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower from 3pm to 6pm costs from just £40 – not that you can put a price on love, of course! 2. Strolling hand in hand at the London Tower Bridge Exhibition sounds like a great way to kick off Valentine’s Day, if you ask us. Entry is just £8 per adult, which is a pretty reasonable price to pay to enjoy stunning views of London from the high walkways. 3. You know your man is a keeper if he agrees to take you shopping at Westfield Stratford or Westfield White City. We know that men tend to get a little bored (and that’s putting it nicely) while accompanying you to the shops, bless them, so you have to give him brownie points for offering to take you. Extra points if he already bought you a gift and is offering to buy you whatever your heart desires as you peruse the shops, too. 4. Inject a little bit of culture into your day and relationship as a whole by visiting the Tate Modern. Enriching your minds and absorbing all that knowledge and culture is a great way to spend the day; oh and did we […]

First look at Zooey Deschanel’s Tommy Hilfiger collection

Earlier this week we brought you the very exciting news that New Girl actress and all-round cutie pie Zooey Deschanel would be teaming up with Tommy Hilfiger for an epic 16-piece dress collection… and now it’s time to treat you to the very first look of some of the key pieces in the gorgeous new range. And who better to model them than Zooey herself, eh? The dress collection is pretty much everything we expected it to be – and more – and everything we love about Tommy Hilfiger and Zooey Deschanel in an aesthetically pleasing package. Who knew they had so much in common? “Tommy and I share many of the same inspirations,” Zooey said. “Old-school music, classic films and old Hollywood icons – and his guidance during the design process helped to put a really unique twist on each piece.” Prices of the new collection range from $98 to $199, and it lands in stores and online on April 21st. Put it in the diary because we doubt the pieces will stick around for long! [Marie Claire]

Lily Allen talks feminism, motherhood and Beyonce in Elle UK March

Well it’s been a long time since we saw Lily Allen on a fashion mag cover, but we are welcoming her back to the glossies with open arms as she covers the Elle UK March issue. Lily was shot byDavid Vasiljevic and is modelling some seriously cool garbs from the likes of Miu Miu (which she is rocking like a pro on the front cover!), Michael van der Ham and Roland Mouret. Jealous, much? Looking pretty in the latest and trendiest clothes isn’t all she does though, as she talks to the mag about returning to the music industry, motherhood, feminism, and the pressures she thinks women face about the way they look and act… “Of course I’d rather look like Kate Moss than look like myself,” she confessed. “I wish I didn’t feel like that, and I think the reason we feel like that is because of the imagery we’re fed all the time. Women are still expected, in some weird way, to kind of… Sit there and look pretty. And not talk.” Hmm… do you agree with Lily? Or is it all a bit too deep this early on a Tuesday morning? You can read the rest of Lily’s musings – and see more beautiful pics – in the March issue of Elle UK which hits newsstands on January 30th.

The 56th Grammy Awards 2014: The best dressed!

We were quite happy to sacrifice another night’s beauty sleep for the 56th Grammy Awards which took place in Los Angeles yesterday, as the red carpet was as riveting as ever! We’re eternally grateful for the invention of satellite TV and live streams, otherwise we wouldn’t have got the full “chain mail” effect of Taylor Swift’s stunning Gucci Premiere dress which was the talk of the red carpet and MFL HQ this morning. Another lady who got us talking for all the right reasons was Katy Perry, who gets the award for “most apt dress” thanks to the Valentino Couture music note dress she stepped out in. She gets extra points for lifting a look off the Couture Fashion Week runway so soon after its catwalk debut! Rita Ora decided to go for a short, sweet and sexy look on this occasion, swapping her usual gowns for a dazzling, reflective Lanvin dress. Well, if you have a body like Rita’s you might as well make the most of it and show it off, are we right? Check out the full list of ladies who impressed us on the Grammys red carpet last night; who gets your best-dressed vote? Katy Perry in Valentino Couture Taylor Swift in Gucci Premiere  Rita Ora in Lanvin  Alicia Keys in Armani Prive  Iggy Azalea in Elie Saab  Zendaya Coleman in Emanuel Ungaro  Sarah Hyland in Emilio Pucci  Ciara in Emilio Pucci  Pink in Johanna Johnson Anna Kendrick in Azzaro  Madonna in Ralph Lauren Ariana Grande in Dolce and Gabbana Anna Faris in Fitriani

Vanessa Hudgens turns up the glam factor at Gimme Shelter premiere

Let’s end the working week on a style high, shall we? And we think you’ll agree that sartorial highs don’t get much grander than this look courtesy of Vanessa Hudgens. The stunning actress attended the New York premiere of her new film, Gimme Shelter, and absolutely owned the red carpet in a floor-sweeping black dress from the Monique Lhuillier spring/summer 2013 collection. We’d love to say that Vanessa has come a long way since her High School Musical days because we love a good style transformation story, but we think her red carpet style has always been on point. Vanessa kept all other accessories to a minimum, leaving the dress and her effortless beauty to do all the talking, and kept her hair in a loose, slightly disheveled side plait to add a tough of edginess to a high-glamour look. Rosario Dawson gets a mention too for looking very chic in her monochrome ensemble!

Beyonce releases sweatshirts with words from her new songs!

Do you like the two sweatshirts above? These aren’t just any ordinary one word slogan sweatshirts you see before you. They just to happen to be sweatshirts featuring four of the most popular (so popular they went viral!) words from Beyonce’s brand spanking new album that she had secretly been working on and surprised fans with last month. And as a result, we need them in our lives and wardrobes, pronto! “Flawless,” “watermelon,” “surfboard” and “breakfast” are all words that can be found on her new secret album, and all four can be found individually emblazoned on the sweatshirts. We think it’s a pretty cool idea that brings the fashion, music and social media worlds all together. The sweatshirts retail for $65 each (you can get them on Beyonce’s official e-store) which we don’t think is too steep a price to pay to pay homage to the one and only Queen Bea. They will also be excellent conversation starters amongst fellow Beyonce fans who will recognise them. Which one would you get? [Style Caster]

Are we overreacting to Mindy Kaling’s Elle US cover?

As the new crop of magazine cover stars emerge for February, controversy isn’t too far off. In the firing line this week for cropping the hell out of one of its February cover stars, Mindy Kaling, is ELLE US. The Mindy Project star features on one of the four special edition covers celebrating women in TV, alongside New Girls’ Zooey Deschanel, Alison Williams from Girls and Amy Poehler from Parks and Recreation – all of whom are fully featured on their respective covers. Being Kaling’s first major mag-fronting gig, critics were quick to slam the publication for typifying the requirements of an industry bound by a silent, immoral code of skinniness, colour, and a whole load of size zero. But, before jumping on the bandwagon to berate an otherwise respectable and widely read publication, we did a little digging to see where cover stars had been given the crop treatment – regardless of colour, size or celebrity status. And, the results were pretty surprising. Yes, ELLE US repeated the mistake with its October 2010 cover star, Gabourey Sidibe, whose skin was supposedly lightened, and image heavily cropped. And, not forgetting the magazine’s star Adele, who (partially) appeared on the May 2013 issue. But then again, ELLE UK also featured a cropped image of white, size zero, Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel on its December 2013 cover, quickly followed by a shoulders-up appearance from British model and actress, Suki Waterhouse for January 2014. Both ladies’ assets are in line with what the industry deems image perfect. Now, let’s turn to another glossy; Vogue. Although most editions of the magazine have courted controversy in the past, the cover star cuts are still interesting. Only Jennifer Lawrence’s face – the It girl of, basically, everything – graced the September 2013 issue Vogue US, whilst Beyoncé […]

Best celebrity guests on Sesame Street

As First Lady of the United States, it’s safe to say Michelle Obama has some impressive predecessors to live up to. From Dolly Madison to Eleanor Roosevelt and of course, Jackie Kennedy, there’s always pressure on the President’s wife to carve out her own niche in history. Michelle’s done a fantastic job so far of winning people over to causes close to her heart, including childhood obesity and military families – helped by her impeccable taste in smart ladies jackets and fitted dresses. However, all that pales in comparison to the shoes Mrs Obama has just stepped into – celebrity guest on Sesame Street. Blending pre-school entertainment with intelligent pop culture comedy for mums and dads, the series has been running for an amazing 44 years, in which time it has welcomed the great and good from all walks of life. Here are some previous stars who set the bar particularly high. Natalie Portman, 2003 Natalie Portman threw herself into this 2003 guest spot with adorable gusto, joining Elmo for a performance of the inexplicably bizarre ‘The Princess And The Elephant’. Initially typecast as ‘the Princess,’ she jumps into an elephant costume in what might be an attempt at steering little girls away from their pretty-in-pink Disney obsession, but could also just have been a chance to practise her trumpeting. Johnny Cash, 1973 If anyone was going to win over perennially anti-social bin-dweller Oscar the Grouch, it would be Arkansas’s professionally glum country music star Johnny Cash, singing the story of ‘Nasty Dan’. The ‘Man In Black’ notably wasn’t for his 1973 appearance on the show – although his famous stage attire was worn in honour of ‘the poor and beaten down/living in the hungry, hopeless side of town,’ poverty doesn’t exist in the Sesame Street utopia, so he went […]

Vanessa Hudgens goes for 40s style for her 25th birthday

While some former Disney stars like to prove that they’re all grown up by flashing the flesh (yes Miley Cyrus, we’re looking at you), others go in the totally opposite direction and embrace their maturity with style and class. A great example of one of those former Disney Channel stars is High School Musical’s leading lady Vanessa Hudgens. The actress – and MFL approved style maven – celebrated her 25th birthday by hosting a very glam party in Hollywood with her hunky boyfriend Austin Butler, and embraced her inner 40s screen siren with her outfit of choice. Vanessa wore a stunning Maria Lucia Hohan floor-length gown (with a plunging front for ultimate sex appeal), which she teamed with a fur stole, matching white gloves and gorgeous sparkly earrings. Side swept, vintage glamour curls and bold dark eye make-up completed her 40s inspired look. [Image]

Alexander Wang puts his minimal stamp on Dr Dre Beats headphones

Does Alexander Wang ever sleep? We are beginning to wonder whether the designer manages to catch any zees as he always seems to be on the go, juggling both his eponymous label as well as Balenciaga among a host of other projects. One thing is certain, this is not one of the typical budget wireless headphones. This belongs in MusicCritic‘s list of classy designer headphones.–. However, the designer has found some time in his busy schedule to collaborate with Dr Dre and create some limited edition headphones for the popular Dr Dre’s Beats line. What do you think of the design above? “For this collaboration with Beats by Dr. Dre it felt right and a natural choice for me to give the Beats Studio headphones, Beats Pill and Urbeats earbuds a clean, minimal look with a luxe sensibility.” Looks like the Alexander Wang signature stamp of minimalism and understated goodness has made its way onto yet another product. The collection features a pair of headphones which retail for £275, a speaker and a pair of earbuds; it launches on December 16th, so a perfect Christmas pressie for all the last-minute shoppers out there.  [Telegraph]

Who better to help us ease ourselves into the new year than the one and only Miss Cara Delevingne, who has scored her second British Vogue cover in just as many years. The 21-year-old model can be seen covering British Vogue’s January issue, and is rocking her signature edgy look thanks to some particularly stunning Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane  pieces. She may have missed out on the Model of the Year prize at the British Fashion Awards this year, but we think it’s safe to say that Cara (who walked away with the award back in 2012) hasn’t lost her pulling power. In fact, with her music and acting projects taking off, we think Cara Delevingne’s fame and influence might go stratospheric in the next 12 months. Watch this space! British Vogue’s January issue hits newsstands on Monday.

MFL Team’s Christmas Wishlist

Happy December, everyone! This is the busiest month of the year for Santa and his elves, so we’ve always been firm believers in making their lives easier by compiling a Christmas wishlist for them. There’s still time to make yours and mail it to the North Pole, so get scribbling, posting and heck eve emailing to ensure you get what you want this Christmas. (Only if you’ve been good, obviously!) So Santa, please see below for our Christmas wishlist pieces. We’ve been very good girls this year, promise. Mince pies, carrots and milk in the usual spot… Love Team MFL x Farhana: I can’t venture out without music, be it at the gym, or on one of my long weekly walks. So, a trusty (read: stylish) pair of headphones is an absolute must. I don’t particularly like in-ear headphones, so these Layla headphones by FRENDS are just perfect. I love the mix of white leather and gold metal detail, and at £130, they’re just about in my budget. Now, to drop some hints! FRENDS Layla headphones, £130 Michele: On the top of my wish list is this gorgeous bowling bag by Victoria Beckham. Victoria can do no wrong at the moment and considering that I can’t get this bag out of my head at the moment…I’m inclined to agree! Victoria Beckham seven python bowling bag exclusive to My Theresa, £2,250 Maria: It might not look like much, but this is the absolute dreamiest bag I think I’ve ever seen. I’ve been in the market for a big bag that I can tote with me on a day-to-day basis and just throw all of my belongs into for quite a while now, and this definitely fits the bill. The colour is a trans-seasonal dream; when it comes to investing in high-end […]

Philip Treacy designs next year’s Brit Award!

It was just announced that Katy Perry is a confirmed performer at next year’s Brit Awards (for the first time ever!), but now we have another reason to get excited about one of the most important music events of the year. Philip Treacy,  milliner extraordinaire, is designing next year’s Brit Award, an honour which has also been given to the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Damien Hirst and Sir Peter Blake. “Music has always been my inspiration and I’m fortunate to have worked with some of the music industry’s greatest artists,” Philip Treacy said. “My inspiration for the trophy comes from a uniquely British genre of music, punk.” Punk, eh? Does anyone else think he was inspired by the punk theme at this year’s Met Gala? What do you think of the first look of the award, above? Can you imagine your favourite music star waving it around during their acceptance speech onn Wednesday February 19th? [Grazia]

Charlotte Church sings in The Body Shop’s ‘Give Joy’ Christmas ad

Want another Christmas related video to distract you from your work this morning? Of course you do, so let’s get straight down to business. Charlotte Church has lent her heavenly and angelic voice to The Body Shop’s Christmas campaign, and can be heard singing her own beautiful version of Joy to the World in the ‘Give Joy’ video which you can see below. “It was really interesting from a creative perspective, to work toward someone else’s brief and it ended up being good fun taking a piece of music we all know so well apart and trying to make it into something new and enjoyable,” Charlotte said. “The Body Shop is a great ethical institution who make a real difference around the world, so it’s fantastic to be involved.” The best thing about The Body Shop this season is that it will be donating £200,000 from the sales of all gifts to help build five new schools with its Community Fair Trade partners in India, Nepal, Honduras and Ghana. So don’t feel guilty about splashing your cash in The Body Shop, as you’ll not only be buying a delicious smelling product, but you’ll also be helping to give education to children in communities around the world. Win, win!

Taylor Swift performing at Victoria’s Secret Show, One Direction not

Despite the rumours that were doing the rounds a while ago, the One Direction boys will not be serenading the Victoria’s Secret Angels as they strut their stuff down the catwalk for the annual Victoria’s Secret Show later this month. Sorry to disappoint you Harry Styles (and Harry Styles fans – i.e, everyone.) We think their absence might have something to do with who is actually performing… and that is the curly haired heartbreaker’s ex Miss Taylor Swift! Although the 23-year-old singer will be the main singing event, she will also be joined on the stage by Fall Out Boy, A Great Big World and Neon Jungle which is also pretty exciting! While we doubt she will be as scantily clad as Rihanna was when she performed last year, we have a feeling Taylor will be a good sport and get into the Victoria’s Secret spirit while singing her heart out. We can’t wait to see her and the rest of the guys perform! Do you like the musical talent VS chose this year? [E! Online]

Shirley Manson and B. Åkerlund for & Other Stories campaign

H&M likes to surprise us. We were pleasantly intrigued when the H&M Group launched & Other Stories, and now we’re equally as surprised to find out that the faces of the brand’s new campaign are none other than fiery redhead Garbage singer Shirley Manson and costume designer and stylist B. Åkerlund. We woud have never put those two together, but we’re so glad they are! “Designer clothing is amazing but not affordable for everyone, and what I’ve loved about & other stories from the start is that they’re a cool street brand allowing women to be fashionable without spending a lot of money,” Shirley explained about why she decided to get involved. “I worked at Miss Selfridge for five years before my music career took off and I’ve always had an appreciation for well executed high street fashion. Stories’ philosophy and the fact that I would be working with B, who I respect enormously, made it a no brainer.” Sounds good to us. B. Åkerlund has worked with everyone from Lady Gaga to Rihanna, so she definitely knows a thing or two about style, which is clearly evident in the ad campaign images. Plus we think she and Shirley make a perfect team! Watch the video below to see more of the pieces that will be making their way to stores from November 18th. Anything caught your eye? [Grazia]

Lady Gaga’s frightening YouTube Awards appearance

Halloween is well and truly over, but that didn’t stop Lady Gaga from scaring everyone with her appearance at the YouTube Music Awards on Sunday night. While her clothes and shoes were fairly normal for Lady Gaga (that just goes to show how desensitized we actually are!), it was her mouth which raised a lot of eyebrows and probably caused a few sleepless nights and nightmares for onlookers. We know what a grill is thanks to Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus bringing them back to our attention, but the piece in Mother Monster’s mouth was actually a bracelet. Made to look like teeth. And it was created by none other than New York jewellery designer Danielle Hills. “I love teeth. We depend on them so much, but we really don’t think about them very often,” the designer said about her dental cuff. “They’re such an incredible organic form. I started using them when I was doing my senior thesis. I was interested in the concept of character archetypes based on generalized human behaviours, and I came up with this character called ‘the surgeon,’ because I was fascinated with the idea of ripping things apart in order to make them heal. So a lot of my designs incorporated destruction and body parts, including teeth.” Interesting. And quite frightening at the same time. Click here to read what else the designer had to say about her work, including how she was first contacted by Lady Gaga’s people back in 2010. Would you wear any toothy accessories? Do you like the rest of Lady G’s look? Are you scared senseless?

Electronic Cigarette’s Final Hurdle: Becoming Fashionable

Many consumer products released onto the market over the years have inexplicably been deemed flops due to having never been considered fashionable. Although you might have heard about those digital portable vaporizers (Check this Facebook profile to learn more), which is becoming a trend now, as something that is fashionable and way cooler than other consumer products. The main problem facing electronic cigarettes when tackling this task is that they are products designed to replace arguably the most quintessentially ‘cool’ consumer item of all time: the cigarette. Cigarettes have long been used in advertising, television, film and music to denote laid-back, devil-may-care attitudes. Even though it is widely accepted that smoking cigarettes can lead to yellow teeth, reduced blood flow and cancer; young people are still taking up the habit every single day with one eye on impressing their peers. Generations grew up watching their on-screen heroes such as James Dean and Clint Eastwood talk through the butt of a lit cigarette and many have since linked smoking to their brand of effortless cool. Fortunately for electronic cigarette suppliers, high profile celebrities such as Simon Cowell and Leonardo DiCaprio (as reported by TECC) have starting using e cigs as they try to cut down on their tobacco use. Celebrity endorsement is being taken seriously by the electronic cigarette world which has recently employed Courtney Love, Jenny McCarthy and Stephen Dorff as high-profile spokespeople and ambassadors. The electronic cigarette industry is not as tightly regulated and restricted as their tobacco counterpart in most parts of the World, so can use these ambassadorial roles with greater efficacy. New York socialite Talia Eisenberg is well accustomed to running in celebrity circles and attending prestigious events; now she has started to play host in her home town of New York as she opens up her […]

“I’m confident in who I am” – Lady Gaga, Glamour US December

With the imminent release of her brand new album, ARTPOP, it was inevitable that Lady Gaga would be making a huge comeback and appearing all over our screens, radios and fashion glossies. So, it comes as no surprise to see her on the Glamour US December issue, sporting a very eighties style crimp do at the same time. We kind of like it – where do you guys stand? Lady G, or Mother Monster as she’s known, posed for Patrick Demarchelier in the Glamour Women of the Year 2013 issue, and also opened up to Andy Cohen about her perception of beauty… “If there was some sort of mathematical equation for beauty, I don’t know if I would be the algorithm,” she said. “I’ve always been OK with that. I’m not a supermodel. That’s not what I do. What I do is music. I want my fans to feel the way I do, to know what they have to offer is just as important, more important, than what’s happening on the outside. “I’m confident in who I am. I’ve come to a place in my life where I’ve accepted things that are me, as opposed to feeling pressure to explain myself to people around me. That’s just the way I’ve always tried to be. It didn’t change when I became a star.” Well said Mother Monster! Lady Gaga’s Glamour issue hits newsstands on November 5th so make sure you pick up a copy to read the rest of her interview and see more of her pictures.

Mariah Carey divides opinion on the BET Black Girls Rock stage

Mariah Carey’s pretty blessed in both vocal range and curve departments, and it looks like she has more self-confidence than most current musical artists put together; that’s why it doesn’t surprise us to see her wearing this very risqué Alexander McQueen ensemble on the BET Black Girls Rock stage at the weekend. She previously wore the dress on American Idol at the beginning of the year and got very positive feedback about it – we were just one of many gushing about it – so we totally get why she wanted to wear it again. This time around she decided to slice and dice it and wear a cropped top instead of the slightly more conservative top in a matching print. While she totally nailed it the first time around, we don’t think wearing an ill-fitting black cropped top was the right decision on this occasion. Regardless of the cropped top blunder though, she still looks gorgeous and her hair and make-up were flawless, as always. We wouldn’t expect anything less from the ultimate musical diva! Do you admire Mariah Carey’s sartorial decision or should she have covered up and gone with something else? Let us know your thoughts! [Image]
